  • Pierce Brosnan on How Doctor Strange and a Fantastic Script Led Him to a Role in ‘Black Adam’

Pierce Brosnan on How Doctor Strange and a Fantastic Script Led Him to a Role in ‘Black Adam’

69-year-old Pierce Brosnan is already a legend. But as if having four Bond films under his belt, including 1995’s GoldenEye, and a memorable role in Mrs. Doubtfire and 94 episodes of Remington Steele weren’t enough to cement the Irish actor’s legacy, he can now check “superhero” off his list. Brosnan’s latest endeavor finds him starring alongside Dwayne Johnson and Aldis Hodge in DC’s Black Adam where he plays Kent Nelson, aka Doctor Fate. As Brosnan enters into his fifth decade as an actor, he remains busy despite having five children and three grandchildren. As it turns out, he might have his children to thank for his latest role.

In an interview at Black Adam’s World Premiere, Brosnan explained how his son’s fascination with another comic book doctor, Doctor Strange, among other things, inspired him to take on the role of Kent Nelson in Black Adam.

I loved Doctor Strange and my sons, who are comic book aficionados, would say, “Dad, Doctor Strange.” Well we all know who Doctor Strange his and he is epically brilliant. Benedict…But then you have the bookend to that and it’s Doctor Fate. And Doctor Fate is much-loved, one of the senior members of the sorcerer’s world. Jaume Collet-Serra is the director. Dwayne Johnson as Black Adam. The cast. The text. The script works on many different levels. I think it covers them in a very subtle way and sometimes on the nose culturally…politically…socially. And, more importantly, in a grandiose, epic, entertaining way.

DC comic fans will know that Nelson is just one of several characters to take on the mantle of Doctor Fate but is considered to be the most powerful to have ever donned the Helmet of Fate. While the character has previously appeared in DC-related media, it’s likely that Brosnan’s version will be the one that enters into the collective consciousness of pop culture. Whether or not that means he’ll return in the role again, or if another character from the comics assumes the mantle, remains to be seen. Either way, it’s another checkmark on the legendary Brosnan’s list of achievements.

‘Black Adam’ Scribe Teases Potential Future Spinoffs

After fifteen years of development, Dwayne Johnson’s superpowered passion project, Black Adam, is set to hit theaters. Set to introduce not only Johnson’s Teth-Adam but also four members of a modern-day incarnation of the Justice Society of America (Hawkman, Doctor Fate, Atom Smasher and Cyclone) and featuring the return of a couple of characters from previous DC projects, the film is laying the groundwork for a wide-range of opportunities to tell stories in the future. In an interview at the film’s premiere, writer Rory Haines was asked if fans should expect to see any additional projects spinning out of Black Adam.

Hopefully so. DJ’s been working on this for 10 years. Obviously it’s well know…he’s not just an actor, he’s a producer, he’s a visionary himself. He has a lot of vision for this and I think fans are going to really love where he wants to go.

Even though the film’s main plot seems set in the present, the very fact that the JSA shown in the film has a pair of legacy members opens up the potential for a JSA-centric project to be told in the past, present of future of the DC Universe. It’s also possible that solo projects for Hawkman or Doctor Fate could be on the horizon if the characters are well received. Of course, there’s great potential for a Black Adam sequel, perhaps featuring Superman or Shazam. Whatever the case, it remains clear that Johnson’s passion for the character, which was the driving force in seeing Black Adam made through all the changes over the years at WB, will shape what comes next for these characters.

  • New DCEU Promo Teaser Offers First Full Look at ‘Black Adam’s Justice Society of America

New DCEU Promo Teaser Offers First Full Look at ‘Black Adam’s Justice Society of America

It was during the first DC Fandome when Dwayne Johnson confirmed that his upcoming film, Black Adam, would feature the Justice Society of America. The team was one of the first superhero teams to come together in the golden age of comics. This film will finally be their big-screen debut after multiple TV appearances. The upcoming roster will consist of Hawkman, Doctor Fate, Atom Smasher, and Cyclone and a new promo gave us our first official look at their costumes.

The first reveal is of the film’s take on Hawkman, as he extends his wings to fully reveal his gold and maroon color scheme. The character is quite accurate to his comic counterpart with the winged helmet and all. Now we just need to see his iconic mace.

The next one is the team’s veteran member, Doctor Fate. He is the DCEU’s equivalent to the Sorcerer Supreme. Perhaps the most interesting detail of the suit is that the Helmet of Fate appears to not have any eye slits. Maybe they’ll work in some details during post-production, possibly having them glow yellow, but it’s a curious update on the design.

Atom Smasher is here barreling through the streets in his iconic comic-accurate look, featuring his blue and yellow color scheme with a bronze belt. The mask features white eyes, something we don’t tend to see too often in comic book adaptions, but it’ll surely please fans.

The final look is of Quintessa Swindels‘ Cyclone, the granddaughter of the first Red Tornado who possesses wind-like abilities. The character is sporting a green armored dress look, reminiscent of her comic counterparts.

The designs look great and we can’t wait to see them in action. In the teaser, it does seem like Doctor Fate is trying to convince Black Adam of joining their side and may have offered our first glimpse at the film’s direction. It is currently set to hit theaters on July 29th, 2022.

  • ‘Black Adam’ Merch Reveals new Justice Society Logo

‘Black Adam’ Merch Reveals new Justice Society Logo

Just recently at DC FanDome, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson debuted our very first look at his upcoming DCEU film, Black Adam, a film that The Rock insists will “Change the hierarchy of power within the DC Universe.” The film is set to introduce not just Black Adam, the fallen champion of the wizard Shazam, but the Justice Society of America. The roster for the team will feature fan favorites such as Hawkman and Doctor Fate, as well as lesser-known heroes like Atom Smasher and Cyclone. We only got a brief glimpse at the JSA at this year’s FanDome, but it seems some merchandise has given us a better glimpse at the team, and possibly its history.

The merch reveals a simple, with “Justice Society” logo along with the letters “JSA” right in the middle. The one notable difference, that many fans may notice, is the absence of the team’s golden eagle, seen in many and almost all iterations of the team’s logo.

Its interesting to see that the team has a logo, especially when you remember that this Justice Society is new. It is confirmed that Atom Smasher and Cyclone are the newest recruits for this new JSA. The existence of this logo could be yet another hint that this is not the first iteration of the Justice Society of America within the DCEU, and that this could be the return of a long-dormant superhero team within the DC Universe.

  • RUMOR: ‘Black Adam’ Will Feature the Original Atom

RUMOR: ‘Black Adam’ Will Feature the Original Atom

The Justice Society of America has always been a team that’s focused on the legacy of its heroes. Over time, the mantles would be passed down to new heroes such as family or even proteges. The team has seen many iterations since its inception all the way back in the 1940s. It wasn’t until we saw Geoff Johns run on the team that the team began to shift the members of its roster, adding legacy heroes like Cyclone, Starman, Stargirl, Jakeem Thunder, Wildcat, Hourman, and Albert Rothstein, the godson of the original Atom, Al Pratt.

With Black Adam set to introduce the Justice Society on the big screen, fans may take notice of its updated roster. The Direct is reporting that Golden Age Atom, Al Pratt, is set to make an appearance in the upcoming film in a limited role. The hero will serve as a sort of uncle figure to Albert in the film, with the new Atom Smasher donning his original costume when he eventually suits up with the JSA. No casting for Al Pratt has been revealed at this time.

A key detail here is Albert donning Al’s original suit, which would mean at one point Pratt did indeed operate as Atom. With Ma Hunkle and the original Red Tornado, another golden age JSA member reportedly in the film, it definitely feels like the seeds are being planted to feature the original JSA at some point in a prequel of sorts and potentially show us the golden age of heroes we theorized may have once operated in the DCEU.

  • ‘Black Adam’ May Tease the Lost Golden Age of Heroes

‘Black Adam’ May Tease the Lost Golden Age of Heroes

The Justice Society of America is known as one of the first superhero teams in comic history. They recently got brought back in DC’s Doomsday Clock event. At one point, Doctor Manhattan erased them from the timeline. Yeah, I am not sure why either. The team has become somewhat of a hot topic, showing up in the recent Death Metal storyline and taking centerstage in CW’s Stargirl. We also got the confirmation that the JSA will be making their way to the DCEU in the highly anticipated Black Adam film.

The roster will consist of Doctor Fate, Hawkman, Cyclone, and Atom Smasher. With this news, many may begin to wonder why the team roster seems so small. Also, why is it missing so many key members that made the golden age so special? So far, we can figure out from the news of the upcoming film and knowledge of past iterations of the team that this probably isn’t the first incarnation of the JSA within the DCEU.

The first piece of evidence stems from a line said by Wonder Woman in Zack Snyder’s Justice League. In a conversation with Bruce, Diana tells Bruce that “They said the age of heroes would never come again”. It could be possibly referring to the gods of Olympus, but I feel as though the line could mean a whole lot more. Wonder Woman has been part of the JSA on multiple occasions. She even leads the team in the upcoming animated feature Justice Society: World War II. In Wonder Woman 1984, Diana may have stayed out of the public eye, but she was still active in her efforts to help people.

In Adventure Comics #466, following the end of the war and a decline in supervillains, villain Per Degaton had taken full advantage of the Red Scare and coerced the US government into believing these masked heroes could serve as a threat to the country. Consequently, the government forced these heroes to reveal their identities if they wish to continue. The team concluded that to keep themselves and everyone they loved around them safe, the best course of action would be to retire and disband the Justice Society. This storyline could serve as a reason why Superman was one of the first heroes to pop up and why the US government had been so critical of Clark’s actions.

Another intriguing detail about the golden age team is the chosen roster for their upcoming appearance in Black Adam. It isn’t just the roster but also how they are going to get introduced in the film. These details come from casting info for a character known as Ma Hunkel, a member of the original JSA who will appear in the upcoming film. The breakdown states that Hunkel will be the caretaker in Hawkman’s museum. In Geoff John‘s run, she served a similar role. She was the caretaker of the JSA headquarters when they were brought back into the modern-day DC universe. Ma Hunkel’s inclusion isn’t the only brow raiser, as the roster itself includes characters known as Cyclone and Atom Smasher. They will be played by Quintessa Swindell and Noah Centineo respectively.

These iterations of the characters are early recruits like they were in John‘s team. The original lineup included iconic characters that have evolved and inspired new iterations, such as DC staples like Green Lantern and The Flash, two notable absences from this roster. These absences may serve to tell even more stories in the DCEU, such as period piece set during WW2 featuring iconic members such as Hourman, Dr. Midnite, Starman, Sandman, Johnny Thunder, Mr. Terrific, Wildcat, and more.
