  • A Major DC Studios’ Project Is Already Reportedly Facing Delays

A Major DC Studios’ Project Is Already Reportedly Facing Delays

Though the first project set in the all-new DCU does for several more months, there are plenty of good vibes about the shared universe being shepherded by DC Studios’ co-chairs James Gunn and Peter Safran. The animated series Creature Commandos will bat leadoff for the DCU with the studio’s biggest star, Superman, on deck for a 2025 release. Plenty of other projects have made news lately, including Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, which seemed to be coming together quickly. A new report indicates DC Studio has pumped the brakes a bit on the film.

According to insider Daniel RPK, once on track to start production later this year, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow now won’t begin principal photography until January 2025.

In our story, we have Superman who was sent to Earth and raised by incredibly loving parents. Kara was on Krypton. She was on a piece of Krypton that drifted away from the planet and she lived there for the first fourteen years of her life in a horrible situation where she watched everyone around her die. So, she’s a much harsher and more fucked up Supergirl than you’ve been used to thus far.

-James Gunn on Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow

Ana Nogueira‘s screenplay for Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow will be based on the 2021 comic book run of the same name which was written by Tom King. “Tom has been one of the architects of this entire situation,” said Gunn of King’s involvement in creating the foundation of the DCU. “He’s been one of the guys in the room with us, along with four or five other writers. I love his take on these characters. He just turns them slightly to be something very unique.“

Despite the slight delay in getting things up and running, there’s no indication that director Craig Gillespie‘s film won’t make its June 26, 2026 release date. It is expected that Kara Zor-El, played by Milly Alcock, will make her first DCU appearance in 2025’s Superman.

  • ‘The Marvels’ Presales Currently Behind ‘The Flash’ and ‘Black Adam’

‘The Marvels’ Presales Currently Behind ‘The Flash’ and ‘Black Adam’

At the current rate, The Marvels‘ may be facing the lowest opening since The Eternals,w which opened to $71.2M during the pandemic. Of course, it’s not definite but the presales are currently tracing behind Black Adam and The Flash according to a new piece by Deadline. It’s the first MCU film truly affected by the strike, as Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was still able to promote with its cast before SAG went on strike as well. There’s also the hot debate regarding Marvel and superhero fatigue with the latter showing its fangs with other releases like Blue Beetle, Shazam: Fury of Gods, and The Flash.

Marvel normally pulls in viewership and has strong openings with bigger drops going into its second weekend. So, it’s unclear if it’ll pick up the pace going into its final week, especially with hopes that the SAG strike is wrapped this weekend and the cast can start promoting the film. Whether that’ll make a major change is a different point of discussion and remains surprising that Marvel Studios has yet to postpone the release.

Some are pointing to the “homework” aspect which is a hot debate online. It’s hard to believe that those expectations are set by non-online viewers given that we’re introduced to a variety of characters in films for the first time and not everyone watches every single MCU project faithfully.

Of course, there’s also the potential that current film visits are closer to a “wait and see” approach rather than going all-in with presales. While Five Nights at Freddy’s managed to pull in strong numbers, they were above the initial expectations due to strong word-of-mouth. The same could also go for the MCU’s latest entry. So, all eyes are going to be on those reviews which are also only going to drop shortly before the release. For now, we can only wait until the film releases with the first Thursday preview numbers and its Friday box office hinting at where the film will end.

  • Set Photos Reveal First Look at WWE Star’s ‘Captain America 4’ Villain

Set Photos Reveal First Look at WWE Star’s ‘Captain America 4’ Villain

Production on Captain America: New World Order continues to move along despite the WGA strike having indefinitely postponed production on Blade and shut down Daredevil: Born Again and Wonder Man for short periods of time. Principal photography on the film kicked off in March and produced some interesting behind-the-scenes looks at Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson, Shira Haas‘ Sabra and others attending a funeral as well as first looks at Harrison Ford as President Thunderbolt Ross and the return of Tim Blake Nelson‘s Samuel Sterns. Now, a new look from the set of the film has revealed a pair of villains, one of whom is being played by WWE Superstar Seth Rollins.

Photographer Christopher Oquendo was able to capture Rollins along with an unidentified co-star as they prepared to shoot scenes with Mackie. It seems as though Rollins has joined the cast of the film as one of the members of the villainous Serpent Society. While it’s unclear which member of the group he’s playing, it appears as though the co-star sporting a similar costume is Diamondback, who has long been rumored to appear in the film.

In the comics, the members of the Serpent Society typically sport much more garish costumes than what Rollins and his unidentified co-star are wearing here and, would make them much easier to identify. However, it seems pretty likely that Rollins is playing Klaus Vorhees, aka Cobra, aka King Cobra, one of the many former leaders of the Serpents. What role they villains will have in an already busy film remains to be seen! Captain America: Probably No Longer Subtitled New World Order is tentatively slated to hit theaters May 3, 2024.

  • Leaked Set Photos of ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ Provide First Look at Lady Gaga’s Harley Quinn

Leaked Set Photos of ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ Provide First Look at Lady Gaga’s Harley Quinn

Joker: Folie à Deux, the sequel to 2019’s megahit, Joker, has been in production for some time and quite a few interesting photos and videos have leaked from the set. Lady Gaga, who joined the cast as Harleen Quinzel, has been captured on set a few times but not as her alter ego, Harley Quinn…until now.

A new batch of photos and a video show Lady Gaga in her full, spectacular Harley Quinn look accompanied by a whole bunch of Gotham’s finest.

A set video shows the character being escorted through a rowdy crowd, many of whom seem to be there rallying in support of the Joker.

Given that several of the members of the crowd are either in Joker masks or full Joker makeup, not to mention the sign someone made asking Joker to marry them, it would appear that Joaquin Phoenix‘s Arthur Fleck has become a cult hero in Gotham following the events of Joker. That film ended with Fleck in Arkham Asylum, where it’s expected he will meet Lady Gaga’s character. A recent video from the set of the film shows what is widely accepted as the asylum burning as the duo escapes.

Joker: Folie à Deux, which will be a musical in parts, will be released at part of the new DC Studio’s Elseworlds banner on October 4, 2024.

  • Ezra Miller’s ‘The Flash’ Shuffles Its Release Date Again

Ezra Miller’s ‘The Flash’ Shuffles Its Release Date Again

DC’s The Flash will now open one week earlier than previously expected, moving to June 16, 2023. The film, which was originally slated to hit theaters on March 23, 2018, is now on its seventh release date since being announced.

The film has been a considerable source of controversy as star Ezra Miller was at the center of a series of increasingly bizarre scenarios. Amid these scenarios, rumors have swirled about a potential recasting but at the same time, early screenings of the film have been generally positively received.

According to director Andy Muschetti, the film will be an adaptation of the iconic DC Comic story Flashpoint, though not a one-to-one page-to-screen translation. Principal photography for The Flash ran from April through October of 2021. The most recent move gives the DC film one more week to breathe ahead of the release of Indiana Jones and The Dial of Destiny, which is slated for a June 30th debut.

  • VFX Artist Speaks Out on the Troubles Working With Marvel Studios

VFX Artist Speaks Out on the Troubles Working With Marvel Studios

There have been quite a few statements in the past in regard to how VFX is handled throughout the industry. While a new piece by Vulture, an anonymous member of the VFX industry shares his experiences working on a Marvel project, and the deeply rooted challenges that come with it. It’s been known that they aren’t an easy client going by past statements, but it offers a bit more insight into what exactly the feeling is working for the media giant.

At the tail-end of the article, there’s a point made that this is “universal to every show and every project.” Marvel’s power is that they have a certain hold on the industry with many bidding to get their hands on the next major project. There are even tales of one VFX agency getting blacklisted due to not delivering on a suddenly new third act. One issue highlighted is that Marvel Studios’ directors aren’t well-versed in how to work with visual effects, which slams their departments.

They also are giving those very directors a lot more freedom, which needs up leading to various changes. Marvel simply has the power to demand it and VFX agencies are, at times, desperate enough to make promises that don’t benefit them directly. They highlight how sometimes they don’t have a director of photography involved during post-production, which leads to some last-minute changes; highlighting Black Panther‘s final act.

The demand to see final renders to support those novice directors, who mostly have indie backgrounds, also creates the issue of adding more work to the department. They also are “pixel-fucked” as they state due to nitpicking to ensure every last pixel is perfect, as they also try to change things up late throughout productions. Their demand of wanting changes throughout production, something expected due to their perchance of doing reshoots, is definitely adding to that issue. Something they highlight on how some people experience working on these projects.

I was working seven days a week, averaging 64 hours a week on a good week. Marvel genuinely works you really hard. I’ve had co-workers sit next to me, break down, and start crying. I’ve had people having anxiety attacks on the phone

The big issue lies that VFX houses aren’t unionized and many can demand these sorts of last-minute changes and high-level demands for an affordable price. This isn’t a VFX-specific issue as the entire ad industry is built around that exact same model only with less focus set on it; speaking of experience. An issue is also management trying to keep the client happy, making unrealistic promises that then add pressure to the staff that has to actually realize that very venture.

Marvel is a big brand with Disney backing them, these issues are then also raised due to middle and upper management expectations to appease whatever was set during a pitch process. We have heard many director’s praise the freedom they have working on these projects, and that creative freedom to change and adapt has its price.

One thing is for sure, the work being done is still at a high level; no matter what the internet tends to say. Under the conditions they are working on, the work should not be dragged down. As the article points out, it’s a universal issue and it definitely will not slow down until any further action is taken within the industry. Marvel is not just a big fish; they are the biggest fish at the moment. The best direction is for Marvel to give its creative teams more support in regards to VFX, tighten those productions up to allow fewer last-minute changes, and lastly, that the industry will be able to unionize.

  • ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Blows Past ‘The Avengers’ At the Box Office

‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Blows Past ‘The Avengers’ At the Box Office

One day after becoming the tenth highest-grossing film of all time, Top Gun: Maverick has officially surpassed The Avengers to move up the list. The Tom Cruise-led sequel is now the ninth highest-grossing film of all time. As of yesterday, the movie is currently at $623.8 million at the domestic box office. That’s enough to push it past The Avenger’s domestic haul of $623.3 million.

After two months in release, Top Gun: Maverick seems to show no signs of stopping. The film is still within the top five at the box office, and word of mouth seems to be keeping the film afloat despite the growing competition. It remains to be seen just how high Maverick can fly. The top six films of all time might be hard to beat – Avengers: Infinity War sits in sixth place with $678 million – but it does seem likely Maverick will overtake Titanic’s $659 million and Jurassic World’s $653 million. Should that happen, Maverick would go on to become the seventh highest-grossing film of all time.

Maverick is Cruise’s best-performing film at the box office and the actor is certainly being rewarded for its success. Per Variety, Cruise is looking to earn a minimum of $100 million from ticket sales, his salary and his cut from rentals and streaming revenue down the line.

Top Gun: Maverick was directed by Joseph Kosinski and follow’s Cruise’s Maverick as he returns to the prestigious aviation academy for a special assignment. The film is currently set to hit home video on August 23rd.

  • SDCC Reveals When We Can Expect Marvel Studios’ “Mega-Panel”

SDCC Reveals When We Can Expect Marvel Studios’ “Mega-Panel”

Just recently, it was revealed that Marvel Studios’ new animation division will get its very own panel at San Diego Comic-Con. While we only got teases of what’s to come, it was hinted at we’ll see a lot more from their animation projects. Now, it seems like more details have dropped for the Hall H panel for the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s future.

In a new report by Deadline, Kevin Feige‘s “mega-panel” has been confirmed for 5 PM on Saturday, July 23rd. So, we’ll definitely get quite the double whammy with the upcoming projects. It’s unsure just how much they’ll show considering D23 and Disney+ Day are also on the horizon, but it’ll be exciting nonetheless.

Marvel Studios’ usual tradition was always a showcase of their upcoming Phase or new entries to the MCU. Yet, they may have a stronger focus on Black Panther: Wakanda Forever given that the film is going to release in November and we still don’t have a trailer for it. They may be keeping the “big” announcements for the Disney-owned event later on.

No matter what, there’s something special about these events and they also tend to create some build-up that Phase 4 may have needed if it weren’t for COVID delaying a lot of the releases. So, we’ll see how they enter the event and what they might be bringing to the show for those that are attending, as well as what they’ll share with those at home.

  • Taika Waititi Would Only Add More Jokes to a ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ Director’s Cut

Taika Waititi Would Only Add More Jokes to a ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ Director’s Cut

There have been many times as of late where fans have wanted to see the director’s cut of a recently released film. It’s not always the case but with success stories like Zack Snyder’s Justice League, it became a bit of a habit. Yet, Thor: Love and Thunder director Taika Waititi doesn’t really share those thoughts and highlights the importance of studios and directors working together, as otherwise, he’d release a “four and a half hours long” movie.

I’ve been thinking about director’s cuts. I watch director’s cuts of a lot of other directors. They suck. Director’s cuts are not good. Directors need to be controlled sometimes, and if I was to say, ‘ah, you wanna watch my director’s cut? It’s four and a half hours long!’ It’s not good, at four and a half hours. There’s a lot of cup-of-tea breaks in there, you don’t even have to pause it.

    Taika Waititi

He also highlights that he’d mostly just add cuts scenes and add a few more jokes in the film, which many have critics have actually pointed out was an issue with the film’s overall tonee.

I’d say my cut would probably have a few more jokes in there. There might be a couple of deleted scenes, but as I always say, a scene is deleted because it’s not good enough to be in the film. I think the deleted scenes section on the DVD, not that they use them anymore, should just be a list of the scenes and no links so you can’t click on them!

    Taika Waititi

So, if you were hoping for some kind of director’s cut you’ll not get one. Yes, they have teased that quite a few sequences were cut from the film, but it does match Taika Waititi‘s directing style to throw everything he has against the wall to see what sticks. So, it does seem safe to say that his version would definitely include quite a few more jokes.
