Original ‘Power Rangers’ Cast Not Involved With Upcoming Netflix Reboot

We’ve heard very little about the upcoming Power Rangers series that is currently in development for Netflix. Jonathan Entwistle was hired to create not only a new film but also various TV series that would establish a Power Rangers Cinematic Universe for the streamer. We’ve heard very little about it since, or even any timings for when we can expect its release, but a recent tweet may have hinted that the new adaptation won’t include the original cast.

Amy Jo Johnson, who played the original Pink Ranger when Mighty Morphin Power Rangers was released in 1993, took to tWitter to complain that a new “Power Ranger universe” wasn’t including the original actors. In a way, it implies that none of the original actors from the series that started it all have been contacted to consult on the project.

It’s strange they wouldn’t consult them at all, especially Jason David Frank who has stuck with the franchise for quite some time now. Yet, there’s also the possibility they are trying to go in fresh as this might be a more adult take on what’s come before. It seemed like they may be adapting the Shattered Grid storyline, which re-popularized Power Rangers in the modern consciousness but that multiverse storyline would benefit from the original actors’ involvement.

Her tweeting it is certainly strange, and we’ll see if more comes out of this, but for now, we can only speculate. Amy Jo Johnson has been busy as of late, as she made a name for herself as a director, most notably directing an episode of Superman and Lois. So, it would be a shame if she didn’t get a chance to direct an episode of the new Power Rangers franchise and leave her stamp on the new generation.

  • Jensen Ackles Teases Development on a Secret DC Project

Jensen Ackles Teases Development on a Secret DC Project

Jensen Ackles is hot off the success of his long-running series Supernatural. He currently is set to appear in Amazon Prime’s critically acclaimed satire of the superhero genre, The Boys, where he’ll take a very likely antagonistic role. He’s been openly campaigning for a DC role in the past, such as his famous photoshoot as Jason Todd a.k.a. Red Hood. In an interview with Michael Rosenbaum in his Inside of You podcast series, he revealed that he may currently be working on tackling a DC role in the near future.

Well, there’s a DC property that I’m currently developing with Warner Bros. and some other good partners that I’ve got my fingers crossed for, but again I am not going to talk about it. You don’t want to jinx it.

    Jensen Ackles

As he doesn’t give away what exactly they may be adapting, it may be his dream project as the future Red Hood. The Flash is rumored to reimagine the DCEU and it would open up the possibility for Ackles to take on the role of his dreams. The way Rosenbaum asked him, he implied that it was about what role he’s always wanted to tackle and if this project becomes a reality – here’s hoping – he might finally manage to accomplish exactly that.

  • ‘Dune’ and ‘Halloween Kills’ Fend Off Newcomers at the Box Office

‘Dune’ and ‘Halloween Kills’ Fend Off Newcomers at the Box Office

There was little to no competition for Dune and Halloween Kills this weekend.

Denis Villeneueve’s Dune retained it’s top spot at the box office after pulling in another $15.5 million during the slow Halloween weekend – a 62% dip from last weekend. That is enough to bring the film’s domestic haul to $69.4 million after 10 days in release. The film also did well internationally, bringing in $21.4 million from 75 markets, including $33 from China. To date, Dune has earned $292.1 million at the worldwide box office.

Halloween Kills came in second, pulling in $8.5 million during its third outing. So far, the film has earned $85.6 million domestically. Coming in third place is the James Bond film, No Time to Die, which took in another $7.8 million. The latest James Bond film has now surpassed $600 million at the worldwide box office after opening to $28.2 million in China.

The biggest surprise of the weekend, however, didn’t come from one of the big titles. FUNimation’s My Hero Academia: World Heroes Mission surprised everyone with $6 million from just 1,600 locations. (By comparison, Halloween Kills was still playing in 3,616 locations this weekend.)

The biggest new release this week was Edgar Wright‘s The Last Night in Soho, which faltered at the box office with just  $4.2 million from 3,016 theaters. That is well below the $8 million box office experts estimated going into the weekend.

  • ‘SHANG-CHI’ Sets Meng’er Zhang on the Path to Stardom

‘SHANG-CHI’ Sets Meng’er Zhang on the Path to Stardom

As Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings opens across the globe this weekend, Marvel Studios’ fans are being introduced to an incredible roster of characters. Star Simu Liu brings charisma and a likability to a character neatly modernized for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While Awkwafina, who seems to be making an impression on every available medium, makes a splash and commands a return appearance as Shang’s BFF Katy. And Hong Kong legend Tony Leung, the film’s true protagonist, gives a rich and unforgettable performance. Standing out among them all, however, is newcomer Meng’er Zhang.

    WARNING: SPOILERS FOLLOW

From Tweets, Tricks And Superhero Poses: Shang-Chi Cast On How They Nabbed Their Marvel Roles | Geek Culture

Zhang plays Xialing, estranged sister and daughter to Shang-Chi and Wenwu, respectively, and a character every bit as formidable as her headlining brother despite her father’s efforts to relegate her to the background. Zhang’s performance as Xialing sets her on an ascending pathway that sort of resolves itself in the film’s post-credit stinger while also setting the stage for Zhang to reappear, potentially in the near future, as the lead in her own project.

And the best part about Zhang’s potential next appearance is that, despite her willingness to cooperate with her brother in the film’s final act, it will probably put her at odds with Shang-Chi. As the film concludes, Shang-Chi is under the impression that Xialing has set about the business of dismantling their late father’s thousand-year-old organization, the legendary Ten Rings; however, as the film’s stinger reveals, Xialing has gone her own way, reimagining the organization rather than destroying it.

Disney Plus has opened new storytelling avenues for Marvel Studios. WandaVisionThe Falcon and The Winter Soldier, and Loki have all proven to be successful efforts in continuing the stories of non-lead characters. In light of this, the next chapter in Xialing’s story feels like a perfect fit for Marvel Studios’ continued dive into the streaming world. A Xialing-centric series would be a perfect addition. It would offer an opportunity to establish not only Zhang’s breakout character’s place in the MCU, but also backfill the history of the organization she now finds herself heading up, all while advancing the story for her inevitable confrontation with her brother.

All of this, of course, thrusts newcomer Zhang into the spotlight. And for that, she seems especially prepared. Zhang has remained cool and unphased during her ascendancy to stardom, handling her interviews with equal parts rookie enthusiasm and veteran smoothness. As has often been the case for the studio over the years, Marvel Studios seems to have struck gold with the casting of Zhang, allowing it to move confidently towards the future of her character in an interconnected universe that can only be made stronger. Zhang has blazed a bright trail into the future both for herself and for Xialing, and audiences should rightfully be looking forward to what’s next.

Marvel Studios’ Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is in theaters now.
