  • James Gunn Adds Two Previous DC Projects to the New DCU Timeline, Confusing Dozens

James Gunn Adds Two Previous DC Projects to the New DCU Timeline, Confusing Dozens

Before it even begins, the new DCU is causing confusion among fans. Set to kick off on December 5th with the animated Max streaming series Creature Commandos, DC Studios’ new attempt to bring the characters and stories of DC Comics to life already has quite a few projects lined up for fans over the next few years. However, according to DC Studios’ co-chair James Gunn, a pair of projects that were relased prior to the creation of the studio should be considered canon, too…kind of…for the most part.

In an interview with IGN, Gunn muddied the timeline waters of the all-new DCU by explaining that the events of a pair of projects he created will be considered canon to the new connected universe.

Now in Creature Commandos, you’ll hear them talk about things that happened in [The] Suicide Squad or Peacemaker,” shared Gunn. “Well then, those things automatically become canon.”

Released in 2021, The Suicide Squad introduced John Cena‘s Peacemaker to fans as part of a second team of degenerates sent by Amanda Waller to Corto Maltese. The events of The Suicide Squad, including the death of Rick Flag at the hands of Peacemaker, serve as the set up for Season 1 of Peacemaker, an HBO streaming series that debuted in 2022 and saw Cena return as the offbeat character. With Amanda Waller, who was featured in both projects, and Rick Flag’s father both appearing in Creature Commandos, and again in Season 2 of Peacemaker, a clear line of continuity can be established from one project to the next. Until it can’t.

As it turns out, not ALL of the events of Season 1 of Peacemaker are to be considered canon to the new DCU, which hasn’t started yet but did start in 2021 with The Suicide Squad. “The truth is almost all of Peacemaker is canon with the exception of Justice League… which we will kind of deal with in the next season of Peacemaker,” said Gunn of the shadowy appearance of the Snyderverse’s team of heroes.

Given Gunn’s creativity and the time he’s had to solve the issue of decanonizing a scene he wrote, explaining away the Justice League shouldn’t be much of a problem…at least until it happens.

Creature Commandos kicks off the all-new DCU–or does it?–on December 5th while Season 2 of Peacemaker will begin streaming in August 2025.

  • James Gunn Updates DC Studios’ Slate, Reveals ‘Lanterns’ Release Window

James Gunn Updates DC Studios’ Slate, Reveals ‘Lanterns’ Release Window

Fans are about to get their first look at the all-new DCU when the seven-episode animated series Creature Commandos debuts on Max in December 5th. Written by DC Studios co-chair James Gunn, the series “tracks a secret team of incarcerated monsters recruited for missions deemed too dangerous for humans” and will introduce the world to a shared universe already populated with heroes and villains.

Announced by Gunn and co-chair Peter Safran as part of the initial DC Studios’ slate reveal in January 2023, Creature Commandos kept pace during production to meet its intended target date as the DCU’s first project. Superman, starring David Corenswet as the new Man of Steel, was always meant to follow Creature Commandos and is on track to do so. However, following that, the release order of the rest of the slate was always a bit murky, though it has started to take shape over the past several months.

As always, Gunn has been active in social media and shared updates on the work taking place behind the scenes to get the DCU up and running. As part of those updates, the co-chair revealed that some projects that were part of the original slate reveal are taking longer to develop while others that were not announced are moving ahead. Now, in an interview with IGN, Gunn laid out exactly what fans can expect over the next two years, including the first hint at when Lanterns will hit HBO.

It’s really Creature Commandos, Superman, Peacemaker, Lanterns, Supergirl,” said Gunn. “And then some things people don’t know,” he teased. Asked to clarify if Lanterns would stream ahead of the June 26, 2026 release of Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, Gunn replied “we’ll see when it comes out, but they’re around the same time.” Spring/Summer 2026 it is!

    • December 5, 2024-Creature Commandos (streaming on Max)
    • July 11, 2025-Superman (in theaters)
    • August 2025-Peacemaker, Season 2 (streaming on Max)
    • Spring/Summer 2026-Lanterns (streaming on Max)
    • June 26, 2026-Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow (in theaters)

With Gunn providing a glimpse of what to expect over the next two years, it may be a while before fans learn the identities of the unknown projects he teased. With no updates on announced projects such The Brave and The Bold, The Authority, Booster Gold and more, it’s clear that expectations should be for only a couple of DC Studios’ releases per year for the foreseeable future.

  • ‘Peacemaker’ Season 2 Sets Premiere Window

‘Peacemaker’ Season 2 Sets Premiere Window

The first season of Peacemaker certainly caught audiences off guard, becoming an instant hit with its irreverent comedy and offbeat sense of family. As James Gunn, who created the series, stepped into a new and larger role as the co-chair of DC Studios, a second season of the series was already well into development leaving fans wondering how, if at all, it could fit into the new continuity. While there’s still no answer to that question, we do at least know when the sophomore season of the hit HBO series will stream.

As part of a series of announcements made by HBO and Max Content CEO and Chairman Casey Bloys, it was revealed that Season 2 of Peacemaker will hit HBO in August 2025.

Gunn has made it clear that the new season of Peacemaker will be set in the new DCU and there’s been some rumors that there will be some crossover between the series and Gunn’s Superman, set to hit theaters in July 2025, with many wondering if Superman will indeed appear in the new season. Frank Grillo‘s Rick Flag Sr., who will first appear in the animated Creature Commandos, is set to appear in both Superman and Peacemaker Season 2, confirming an overlap in the continuity of the two projects. Now all that’s left is to see how they execute it on screen.

  • Frank Grillo Joins the Cast of DC Studios ‘Peacemaker’ Season 2

Frank Grillo Joins the Cast of DC Studios ‘Peacemaker’ Season 2

Having been cast as Rick Flag Sr. In the upcoming streaming series Creature Commandos, Frank Grillo is already a part of the all-new DCU. And as audiences wait for the animated Max series to debut, they can also look forward to Grillo’s first live-action appearance, too.

As revealed on Instagram by DC Studios’ co-chair James Gunn, Grillo has joined the cast of Peacemaker Season 2.

As is expected to be the case with the entire cast of voice actors on Creature Commandos, Grillo will portray the live-action iteration of Flag Sr. in the John Cena lead streaming series. Production on the second season of Peacemaker kicked off last month.

Gunn created the series and directed five of the first season’s eight episodes. While he will be unable to carry that load on Season 2 due to his commitment to Superman, Gunn will still direct some episodes. Though no release window has been set, Peacemaker Season 2 is expected to stream on Max in 2025.

  • James Gunn Confirms Production Has Begun on His Next DC Studios’ Project

James Gunn Confirms Production Has Begun on His Next DC Studios’ Project

Despite a dozen known projects being on it, DC Studios’ DCU slate is fairly undefined. Though Creature Commandos has been confirmed for a 2024 streaming debut, the only project with a known release date is Superman, which is currently in production ahead of its July 11, 2025 bow. It was originally believed that the streaming series Waller would hit Max in 2024; however, the 2023 WGA strike put a dent in those plans. With the scripts for Waller still being written by Jeremy Carver and Christal Henry, Season 2 of Peacemaker became next in line. Peacemaker star Jennifer Holland recently revealed cameras were set to roll on the John Cena-led series this summer but DC Studios co-chair James Gunn just surprised everyone with an update on the project.

Production Is Underway on Season 2 of Peacemaker

As is his way, Gunn–who confirmed he is directing some episodes of Peacemaker Season 2–took to social media to announce that production on the sophomore season of the streaming series had begun.

The announcement comes as a bit of a shock as principal photography on Superman is ongoing; however, there’s no arguing with the man with the plan.

Could Superman Appear in Peacemaker Season 2?

One interesting possibility that arises from Peacemaker and Superman filming in the same spot at the same time under the watchful eye of the man directing both and in charge of the shared universe is a potential crossover. At some point, Peacemaker’s presence in the new DCU will have to be explained since the events of Season 1 predate the existence of the all-new, all-different universe. Given Gunn is the boss, having all the principal actors available together provides the perfect opportunity for the director to cross major task off his to-do list.

  • DC Studios Shifts Its Streaming Slate

DC Studios Shifts Its Streaming Slate

Later this year, DC Studios will release the animated streaming series Creature Commandos, the first project of the all-new, all-different DCU. It’s been expected for some time that the next in-universe streamer would be Waller, which was originally on track to debut in 2024; however, according to an update from DC Studios co-chair James Gunn, that’s no longer the case.

Following an interview in which Peacemaker co-star Jennifer Holland revealed that casting on the second season of the Max streaming series was set to kick off this Summer, Gunn took to Threads to clarify how production on the series would fit into his busy schedule. As was the case with the first season of Peacemaker, Gunn wrote the scripts for the second season which he confirmed have been completed. And though he’ll still be working on finishing up Superman, Gunn will still direct some episodes of Peacemaker Season 2, though likely not as many as he did in the first season where he helmed 5 episodes. The bigger news, however, was that due to the 2023 strikes, Waller is still being written by Jeremy Carver and Christal Henry and will now be released–and be set–after Peacemaker Season 2.

Originally described as Peacemaker Season 1.5, Waller now finds itself in a new spot. With both Peacemaker Season 2 and Waller set within the same continuity as Creature Commandos and Superman, fans had been theorizing that Waller would serve to explain how characters such as John Cena‘s Peacemaker, John Economos and Waller herself made the jump into the new DCU. While it remains to be seen how that will be addressed if at all, it looks like that ball may now be in Peacemaker’s court.

  • ‘Mortal Kombat 1’ Leak Confirms Heroic and Bloody Additions

‘Mortal Kombat 1’ Leak Confirms Heroic and Bloody Additions

Mortal Kombat 1 dropped its first trailer in style with a lot of fanfare. It already has many wondering who else might join the roster of the September release, and it seems that Amazon Italy may have accidentally leaked who will be part of the first Kombat Pack. It seems that the recent rumors are true and we’re getting some bloody good heroic additions for this R-rated game that has seen horror icons and 90s stars.

According to Amazon Italy, Mortal Kombat 1’s Kombat Pack 1 (say that ten times) will include some familiar characters from the franchise’s past. The list includes Quan Chi, Ermac, and Kenshin’s son Takeda. While Takeda is a curious addition given the reboot technically would bring back Kenshin first rather than his son given the timeline, that isn’t the thing that likely had everyone’s eyes on it.

The game will continue the tradition of including third-party characters and it seems they are going in a heroic direction this time around. Given the rise in R-rated superhero offerings, it’s not a surprise but the additions are quite interesting. We have Invincible’s Omni Man, DC’s Peacemaker, and The Boys‘ Homelander included in the list.

Homelander was a fan-favorite addition given his unhinged behavior in the Amazon series. Ironically, the inclusion of Omni Man also adds fuel to the fire of finally getting to see these two Superman-inspired characters to prove which one is more powerful. Though, we don’t know which version of Homelander is going to be brought to the game, as they could either go with the comic design or Antony Starr’s version. They did bring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone to life in Mortal Kombat 11. So, anything is possible if they have the rights.

  • James Gunn Reveals When to Expect Season 2 of ‘Peacemaker’

James Gunn Reveals When to Expect Season 2 of ‘Peacemaker’

The HBO Max streaming series Peacemaker was one of the surprise hits of 2022. Spinning out of James Gunn‘s The Suicide Squad, the series followed John Cena‘s titular character as he once again teamed up with Amanda Waller and A.R.G.U.S. to stop Project Butterfly. Even as Gunn took a new role as the co-chair of DC Studios and looks to start with a clean slate, a second season of Peacemaker remained on the slate though how it will transition into the new DCU continuity remains to be seen.

Needless to say, Gunn is a very busy man these days. Not only is he helping Peter Safran to create and oversee the projects in Chapter 1 of the new DCU, titled Gods and Monsters but he’s also writing and directing Superman: Legacy, one of the most anticipated projects on the slate. With all that going on, fans have begun to question when Gunn will find time for the second season of Peacemaker. As is his way, Gunn took to Twitter to answer those questions.

While talking about the upcoming Gods and Monsters slate, Gunn indicated that Season 2 of Peacemaker won’t be released until after Superman: Legacy. Interestingly enough, production on the second season of the streaming series was reported to be planned to take place after Gunn wrapped his press responsibilities for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 which means it may sit in the can for quite some time before release.

  • James Gunn’s DC Projects and ‘The Batman’ Spinoff Still in Development

James Gunn’s DC Projects and ‘The Batman’ Spinoff Still in Development

There’s been a lot of discussions about what exactly the future has in store for Warner Bros. Discovery’s various DC Comics adaptations. The sudden cancelation of Batgirl raised the question of whether other projects might face a similar sudden cancelation. There’s still no word on what exactly the future looks like–besides a tease of a ten-year plan–but luckily it seems that some projects are definitely safe moving forward. James Gunn took to Twitter to confirm that Peacemaker‘s upcoming second season will be safe.

The director has also gone on record to confirm that his other secret projects are still in development at this point. While they haven’t been announced outside of one that’ll focus on Viola Davis‘ Amanda Waller, it’s good to know that Warner Bros. isn’t shooting everything to the curve at this point.

That is not all, as The Wrap‘s Brandon Katz has also taken to Twitter to hear that the upcoming The Batman spinoff series focused on Colin Farrell‘s Penguin is also safe. So, luckily those excited to further explore that new corner of the DC adaptation’s multiverse won’t have to worry much longer.

It’s definitely a relief that these projects are safe, especially with the potential surrounding them. Peacemaker was a sleeper hit for HBO Max and there’s quite a bit of excitement surrounding the other projects he’s working on. While he’s still busy on the third entry of the Guardians of the Galaxy, he’s got a slate of projects in some form of development over at Warner Bros. and DC. Plus, Matt Reeves is also spearheading his own mini-universe that might offer something very grounded in contrast. So, it seems they aren’t just throwing everything out just yet.

  • James Gunn Will Tackle ‘Peacemaker’ Season 2 After Wrapping Up ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’

James Gunn Will Tackle ‘Peacemaker’ Season 2 After Wrapping Up ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’

We’ve all wondered when James Gunn may tackle the next season of Peacemaker. The director has been quite busy not only working on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 but also has the Holiday Special heading to Disney+ on the horizon. He’s also been teasing quite a few other DC properties that he is currently developing. So, it’s no joke when one says that the director is quite busy.

In an interview with Deadline, the director not only teased the upcoming Disney+ special based around the Guardians of the Galaxy but also confirmed that once he’s wrapped up work on these projects, he’ll tackle the second season of Peacemaker. He doesn’t offer a specific timeframe but it does seem like he may tackle the project once he’s wrapped up most of the work on the franchise, which is eyeing a May release next year.

Yes, the Holiday Special is very light and bubbly and fun and just absolutely ridiculous, so I think that’s great. And then we’re going on to do Peacemaker Season 2.

    James Gunn

With a character like Peacemaker, Gunn has all the freedom he needs to create a story that can go in any direction. After saving the world, the former villain may be riding high and has no idea that a new assignment is just on the horizon. He’s haunted by the ghost of his past actions and who knows how that may play into his story moving forward. So, we’ll see what the future has in store for the character once cameras start rolling on the project.
