  • ‘Red Sonja’ Casts Veronica Ferres as Heroine’s Mother

‘Red Sonja’ Casts Veronica Ferres as Heroine’s Mother

It looks like Red Sonja has found its next major addition in the form of Veronica Ferres. The German star famous for Salt & Fire, Crisis, and more will take on the role of Red Sonja‘s mother and the Goddess of Ashera. The upcoming adaptation is closer inspired by Robert E. Howard‘s comics for Marvel rather than rebooting the original film starring Brigitte Nielsen and Arnold Schwarzenegger from the 80s.

The title role will be carried by Matilda Lutz, who is joined by Wallis Day, Michael Bispring, Robert Sheehan, Manal El-Feitury, Katrina Durden, Martyn Ford, and Eliza Matengu, who round out the cast. Silent Hill: Revelation director M.J. Bassett is taking on directing duties for the production and is replacing Joey Soloway, who is still attached as an executive producer. It’s been filming in Millenium’s Nu Boyana studio in Bulgaria which already teased us earlier last month with Lutz‘s design as the titular heroine.

Ferres is quite well-known in the German market for her work on TV series and movies but has also started expanding internationally throughout the last few years. She definitely makes for an interesting addition to the cast and it’ll be interesting to see just how big her role is, especially with the use of Goddess of Ashera in the story. While we still know very little about the story direction for the adaptation, it still looks quite promising.

Millenium Media’s ‘Red Sonja’ Finds its Leading Cast

Millenium Media is busy bringing Red Sonja to life with director M.J. Bassett. It seems that production has already started in Bulgaria and will even move on to Greece at a later point. To celebrate the production start, Deadline has unveiled that Revenge‘s Matilda Lutz, Sex/Life‘s Wallis Day, and The Umbrella Academy‘s Robert Sheehan have a role in the comic book adaptation.

Bassett had the following to say on the casting:

I’ve wanted to make a Red Sonja movie since I was a teenager – she has been a powerful presence for me and a character that I have always wanted to bring to the screen with my own voice and vision. When I met Matilda Lutz, I knew she had all the magic I was looking for and could see the complexity and depth she would bring to Sonja.

The character was originally created by Robert E. Howard and was adapted b Roy Thomas for Marvel comics. It’s unclear if the upcoming adaptation will follow the comic books or take more creative liberties with the adaptation. Originally, Hannah John Kamen was going to take on the leading role but had to pass it on due to scheduling conflicts. Lutz, as pointed out earlier, is now set as Red Sonja with Day joining as her half-sister Annisia. Sheehan will take on the role of Draygan. It’ll be interesting to see how they adapt this property and if this might be Millenium’s big step into the playing field

  • Jaimie Alexander Reveals Her Involvement With Millenium’s ‘RED SONJA‘

Jaimie Alexander Reveals Her Involvement With Millenium’s ‘RED SONJA‘

It would seem Marvel star Jaimie Alexander has landed a role in Millenium Films’ Red Sonja reboot. The actress revealed the news herself, posting an image of the movies’ script to her Instagram story with a caption that basically confirms her involvement with the project. While she didn’t say what role she’d assume for the picture, it’s likely her character is a supporting one.

The leading part of Red Sonja has already gone to fellow MCU alum Hannah John-Kamen. However, it’s worth noting Alexander is well-known for her warrior woman roles. On top of her leading role in NBC’s Blindspot, she famously portrayed Lady Sif in the first two Thor films, as well as the series Agents of SHIELD. She is set to reprise the role for Taika Waititi’s Thor: Love and Thunder. She shared the announcement in her Instagram Story, which has since gotten deleted but luckily Twitter user @CreamorScream got a screenshot of it:

Red Sonja is will serve as a reboot of the swords and sorcery franchise that began in 1985 with Brigitte Nelson in the title role. Though Nelson’s film was a critical flop, it became a cult hit, and a continuation of the series has been in the works for decades. The project’s time in development hell saw names like Robert Rodriguez, Amber Heard, and Rose McGowan attached in different capacities. Joey Soloway, the creator of Amazon’s award-winning series Transparent, is set to direct the film from a script by Tomb Raider writer Tasha Huo. She replaces disgraced filmmaker Bryan Singer, who was fired from the project following serious sexual assault allegations in 2019. Red Sonja currently has no release date.

  • RUMOR: Sacha Baron Cohen In Talks to Join ‘Red Sonja’ Reboot

RUMOR: Sacha Baron Cohen In Talks to Join ‘Red Sonja’ Reboot

Development on the upcoming Red Sonja reboot has been moving along quite steadily with the recent addition of Antman and The Wasp’s Hannah John-Kamen as the titular warrior, Red Sonja. Plot details for the project have remained under wraps. Gail Simone recently confirmed her involvement in the project, hinting that the film could be taking inspiration from one of her runs on the character. While we wait for more details on the project, new rumors surrounding casting for the upcoming film could hint at some connections that are sure to make Conan the Barbarian fans, and Marvel fans happy.

The Illuminerdi is reporting that Sacha Baron Cohen has been offered the co-lead role in the upcoming reboot as the evil sorcerer Kulan Goth. Long-time Marvel fans might recognize the character. Conan the Barbarian and its characters once called Marvel home before moving to other companies. Kulan Goth first appeared in Conan The Barbarian #14 and was a sorcerer during the Hyborian era. He married the witch Vammatar in hopes to obtain the powers of Shuma Gorath, a multiversal villain within the Marvel Universe. Kulan and Vammatar were eventually destroyed by the god-like entity while attempting to control him.

It’s interesting to see this character chosen as the main antagonist especially as he holds such strong ties to the Marvel universe. Goth has gone up against the Avengers and the X-Men in his Marvel comic run. The origins of the character may be rewritten and tie directly into Sonja’s, with him even possibly being responsible for her family’s death and the pillaging of her home. It’ll be interesting to see how they tackle this iconic character.

  • Hannah John-Kamen Will Become Millenium’s ‘Red Sonja’

Hannah John-Kamen Will Become Millenium’s ‘Red Sonja’

For a while now, Millenium Entertainment has been itching to get their Red Sonja reboot off the ground. They’ve faced multiple delays and issues with development since it was first announced. The film is finally beginning to find its footing with Joel Soloway set to direct the project, while also co-writing the script alongside Tasha Huo. The project has taken yet another leap forward as the project has found its leading lady. Ant-Man and The Wasp actress Hannah John-Kamen will lead the upcoming film as the titular hero, Red Sonja. Soloway gave the following statement:

Hannah is a very talented actress who we’ve been following for years and she IS Red Sonja, Her range, sensibilities, and strength are all qualities we have been looking for and we couldn’t be more excited to embark on this journey together.

For those unfamiliar with the character, she was created by Roy Thomas and Barry Windsor and first appeared in Marvel Comics’ Conan The Barbarian #23 back in 1973. Sonja lived with her family in the Western Hyrkanian Steppes, where a group of mercenaries would pillage and destroy Sonja’s homes. They’d end up killing her father, mother, and two brothers. In a final plea for help, the red goddess Scathach appeared, gifting her incredible abilities such as expert level swordsmanship and hand-to-hand combat. It’ll be interesting to see how they adapt the character into live-action, as she has already been brought to the silver screen back in 1985.
