Robert Eggers’ ‘Nosferatu’ Eyeing ‘Renfield’s Nicholas Hoult for Undisclosed Role

Nicholaus Hoult may have been getting addicted to vampire stories, as while he’s been busy working on the Dracula retelling Renfield, where he stars opposite Nicolas Cage. Now, he has seemingly joined the upcoming Nosferatu retelling by The Northman‘s Robert Eggers. From the sounds of it, he is still in negotiations for a role and would join the cast that currently consists of Bill Skarsgard and Lily-Rose Depp.

The story is teased as a “gothic tale of obsession” that takes place in 19th century Germany, as a Transylvanian vampire haunts a young woman. They tease that he brings “untold horror with him” which might hint at more than just the vampire being the main threat throughout. Skarsgard would take on the role of Nosferatu while Depp will take on the female lead. Hoult‘s character remains under wraps.

Eggers has long hoped to bring this project to life, as he originally was going to film it before he ended up with his Viking project, The Northman. Anya Taylor-Joy and Harry Styles were attached to the project when it was with Studio 8 but due to budget concerns, the project didn’t quite come together. He almost passed on the gothic tale but seemingly fell back in love with the

  • Robert Egger’s ‘Nosferatu’ Picks Up Steam as it Finds New Cast

Robert Egger’s ‘Nosferatu’ Picks Up Steam as it Finds New Cast

There were a lot of theories hitting the web when Robert EggersNorthman didn’t quite become the massive box office success that many expected it to be. It still went on to make its money back through its physical and digital releases, which also seemingly boosted the chances of the director to realize his passion project, a new take on the iconic 1922 film Nosferatu. Deadline has revealed that not only is it gaining momentum, it even found a brand new cast to take on the leading roles.

It seems that Bill Skarsgard and Lily-Rose Depp are now set to star in the film for Focus Features. They are replacing original stars Harry Styles and Anya Taylor-Joy when it was set to film in 2019 for Studio 8. The project was originally going to be tackled before he took his turn at telling a Viking-based story but due to budget calculations, it was put on hold. It seems he wasn’t always going to return to the project as he looked at others but still wanted to explore the gothic tale.

It seems that Focus joining was the reason he settled on bringing his passion project to life. It seems he started meeting with talent right after and Skarsgard would take on the role of the 19th-century monster even when his previous cast was already attached. It seems he swiftly ensured he’d get time to join the project but Taylor-Joy was too busy to find time in her schedule, which led to Depp getting the role.

  • Robert Eggers Teases His Next Film After ‘The Northman’

Robert Eggers Teases His Next Film After ‘The Northman’

Robert Eggers has made quite the splash in the industry with his work in his films The Witch and The Lighthouse. Now, he is also going to leave his imprint on Viking stories with The Northman, which sees Alexander Skarsgard in the role of Amleth on a path of vengeance. While he seems quite proud of his story, he still has openly talked about the hardships of not only working with a larger budget but also the stronger involvement of the studio. So, in an interview with CQ, he highlights that he’s moving his focus to a smaller production once again.

Right now, I definitely want to do something smaller, where it won’t be as painful, or I’ll have full control. There’s always give and take and studio notes. There always is. There was on The Witch. I didn’t have this much gray hair when we wrapped photography. It’s all from post-production.

If you’re wondering what he might be focusing on, he highlighted that he definitely has no interest in filming something in the modern age. A big part of what he enjoys is “doing all this historical research” to bring his films to life. So, he goes on to highlight that he has a disconnect on filming modern technology.

If I was making a contemporary film, what am I supposed to do with myself? Obsess over wallpaper swatches, until my eyes fall out? It’s just not interesting. For whatever reason, it just does not inspire me. And you can’t shoot something that doesn’t inspire you.

    Robert Eggers

He does hint that he’s been listening to “lots of lutes” as he is starting an Elizabethan phase. So, we might expect that era to become the main focus of his next story. So, we’ll see where his research leads him next, and taking a step back with his budget gives him a project that may lead to fewer grey hairs.
