‘Spawn’ Movie Lands ‘Joker,’ ‘Captain America 4’ Writers

For the past few days, Todd McFarlane has been teasing news regarding Spawn, and it looks like we finally know what it is. The Hollywood Reporter announced on Wednesday that Todd Silver, Malcolm Spellman and rising screenwriter Matthew Mixom have been brought on to pen a new script for the long-gestating Spawn reboot.

The Spawn movie has been in development at Blumhouse Productions since 2017. While it’s unclear if Jeremy Renner is still attached to star in the film, Jamie Foxx is confirmed to still star as the titular anti-hero in the reboot. Another major change to the production? McFarlane, the man behind Spawn, was originally considering directing the film. He has, however, stepped down after realizing he might now be the best man for the gig. “If we’ve got an A-list actor, A-list producers, A-list writers, then do you want to shoot for A-list directors, A-list cinematographers? The answer is, ‘of course.’ Let’s keep the momentum going.”

Silver is perhaps best known for helping write Joker, which earned Todd Phillips and Silver adapted screenplay Oscar nominations. Silver is said to have helped pen the sequel, Joker: Folie à Deux, which is set to star Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga. While Spellman, who created The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, is currently at work on the script for Captain America: New World Order. As for Mixom, he’s relatively new to Hollywood and got his start in 2017 with the music documentary Yesterday Was Everything.

In a statement to THR, Spellman explained that it’s an “honor” to get to write Spawn, noting how important the character is to him and how excited he is to make a different type of superhero film.

“I grew up in Berkeley, which is a comic book city. Todd McFarlane’s SPAWN character was always one of my favorites — a Black superhero that was no bullshit, he was cool and dealt with modern issues. Myself, Matt Mixon, and Scott Silver are pledged to honoring what Todd started and what SPAWN is at its core, delivering something that’s relevant and edgy and unlike any other superhero movie out there.”

As of right now, the Spawn reboot does not have a director attached and the team seems to be seeking a new studio partner. With a new writing team attached, perhaps we’ll finally see some movement on Spawn in the near future.

  • Todd McFarlane’s ‘SPAWN’ Film Adds ‘BROKEN CITY’s Writer Brian Tucker

Todd McFarlane’s ‘SPAWN’ Film Adds ‘BROKEN CITY’s Writer Brian Tucker

The long-rumored Spawn film finally seems to be moving forward. The Hollywood Reporter has unveiled that Todd McFarlane‘s passion project added Brian Tucker. He’s well-known for his work on the 2013 crime thriller Broken City, which starred Russell Crowe and Mark Wahlberg. The film will be produced by Blumhouse Productions with McFarlane set as the film’s director. He’ll also produce the film alongside Carla Hacken and Jason Blum.

The project has been talked about since 2017 with Jamie Foxx attached for some time. Even Jeremy Renner was involved as well, but it’s uncertain if they are still set to star. The Hollywood Reporter stated that once the script is written they’ll approach the actors again. The last update we got on the project was briefly during CCXP back in December of 2020. At the time, McFarlane teased multiple other big names involved with the project but there was no other announcement made.

It’s uncertain how long Tucker has already been involved with the project and if he is called in to rewrite a project. Still, it’s great to see that the project is moving forward and there’s still hope to see Spawn in all his glory on the silvers screen. We did get one adaptation featuring Michael Jai White in 1997, which was adapted as a horror-action film by New Line. The comic has been running since 1992 under the Image Comics banner and currently stands as the longest-running indie title. So, it’s time he gets his time to shine in cinemas once again.

CCXP: Todd McFarlane Offers Update on ‘SPAWN’ Film

AT THE OMELETE STAGE AT CCXP WORLDS.

During an interview in the Omelete Stage at CCXP Worlds, the creator of SpawnTodd McFarlane, interviewed with Affonso Solano to discuss his career as a writer, comic artist and what working on his iconic character has meant to him. During the interview, Todd was asked about the upcoming film adaption, which stars Jamie Foxx as the titular character alongside Jeremy Renner, who will be playing Detective Twitch Williams. He confirmed that the production had gotten a lot of work done during the quarantine period. Not just that, but he also teased that the film adaptation has a couple of “big names” attached, which are sure to capture the attention of fans and make people extremely happy. While the project has been in development for years, Jamie Foxx has maintained an interest in the project.

As of now, the Spawn film has been in development for years at Blumhouse for quite some time. It dates back to 2016 when Todd first teased the idea of a Spawn reboot. Even after all this time, we haven’t received any real insight into the film. We are still anxiously waiting for any details that may tease if we can expect another origin story, or we jump straight into the action. Here’s hoping they also give Michael Jai White a minor role as a tribute to his time as the iconic hellspawn in the cheesy 1997 adaptation. Not much has been known about the project’s plot, production schedule, or much of the casting since then, but it’s good to know that the project is still in the works.
