Development Has Been Halted on ‘Static Shock’ and ‘Supergirl’

Warner Bros. Discovery might be moving full-steam ahead with The Flash, however, a new report from The Hollywood Reporter suggests plenty of other DC projects have been shelved – at least temporarily.

In a new piece breaking down the status of projects in varying stages of development at Warner Bros. Discovery and DC, THR has suggested a slew of projects haven’t necessarily been canceled, but development has slowed. Per the outlet, Supergirl, Green Lantern Corps, Static Shock and a Superman film from writer Ta-Nehisi Coates have all seen their development come to a halt with no directors attached to any of the projects.

Reports that Supergirl hit a speed bump first surfaced last week, with Rolling Stone stating the Flash spinoff was no longer moving forward. This report from THR suggests the project isn’t necessarily canceled, but rather, not a priority at the moment. That could potentially change depending on how The Flash is received upon release next year. As for Static Shock and Coates’ Superman, this marks the first news regarding the projects since they were initially announced, so it’s not entirely surprising that development has stalled on both.

A Static Shock movie was first teased in August 2020 as part of DC’s FanDome event, with news coming a few months later that Michael B. Jordan would produce the project for Warner Bros. along with Reginald Hudlin on the film. The project looked to be gaining steam after hiring Randy McKinnon in March 2021 to pen the script. Unfortunately, that was the last bit of movement on the project since its initial announcement – the same goes for Coates’ Superman film with producer J.J. Abrams.

With Warner Bros. Discovery viewing Superman as a viable franchise for its DC brand, it remains to be seen whether or not the studio opts to bring back Henry Cavill or opt to introduce a brand-new Man of Steel. Either way, it seems likely Superman will fly again, it just remains to be seen which Superman it’ll be.

  • Michael B. Jordan’s ‘Static Shock’ Adds Writer Randy McKinnon

Michael B. Jordan’s ‘Static Shock’ Adds Writer Randy McKinnon

It has already been five months since it was revealed that Michael B. Jordan is developing a live-action adaptation of Static Shock. We got our first hint at its development during DC FanDome, but it wasn’t until a few months later that Jordan and Reginal Hudlin announced they were producing the film. The Milestone character will be produced by Outlier Society, which is one of Warner Bros.’s production companies. In a quick Heat Vision newsletter, The Hollywood Reporter revealed that the film has now added Randy McKinnon to write the script.

It is actually McKinnon‘s second time working with Hudlin, as they were both involved with the development of Disney+’s true-life drama Safety. Static Shock may also be the beginning of many stories centered on black superheroes, as Jordan did point out in the initial reveal that this is just the initial step to give voices to those that are unheard. It’s a great commitment and Static Shock is quite a popular character due to his 2000’s animated series. There is a good chance we’ll also see many other Milestone characters make their live-action debut in the future.

It’ll be interesting to see how they bring this character to life on the silver screen and what focus they will set. It seems likely that they might focus on the character balancing his private and superhero life, as he commonly is portrayed as a teenager. the character also made an appearance in Young Justice, where he became a member of the Outsiders. Whatever direction they decide to go, we can’t wait to see it once cinemas open again.

  • Michael B. Jordan to Produce Warner Bros. ‘Static Shock’

Michael B. Jordan to Produce Warner Bros. ‘Static Shock’

Back at DC FanDome it was slyly mentioned that a live-action Static Shock project was in development at WB. It was revealed during the announcement that Milestone comics would be returning with an all-new slate of titles to be released next year. Now it seems that the project has picked up steam and that they’ve already been assembling creatives to work on the project shifting it officially into active development.

Today it was announced that Black Panther star Michael B. Jordan will be joining Reginald Hudlin on the project as a producer. This will be done through his Warner brothers based production company, Outlier Society. We even got an official statement on the cooperation.

I’m proud to be a part of building a new universe centered around black superheroes; our community deserves that. Outlier Society is committed to bringing to life diverse comic book content across all platforms and we are excited to partner with Reggie and Warner Bros on this initial step.

Static Shock gained is popularity from the original early 2000’s animated series based on the character, and is set to return along with the other Milestone characters for new issues next year. It’s mentioned in the article that if the project is a hit, it could spawn a “multi-platform franchise” possibly opening the door for Outlier Society to develop more characters from Milestone and DC Comics.

FanDome: Static Shock Movie In Development

With many announcements and surprises flooding out of Fandome, many wondered what the planned secret DC Comics panel would focus on. It was revealed to be a relaunch of the Milestone comic brand. This comic line would focus once again on a roster of under-represented superheroes from the DC Universe. This is great after it had been dormant for more than two decades. In the panel, one fan asked the question if any of these characters would return to the silver screen.

In response to this question, it was revealed by Reginald Hudlin that there had been serious talks with Warner Brothers and Jim Lee. They wanted to get fan-favorite Static Shock a potential theatrical release. There are also talks with WB Animation to bring these iconic Milestone characters to life. Static Shock will also get a new comic line that starts in 2021 alongside the return of Milestone.

Fans are gonna have to wait a little bit longer for more information. It still seems to be in the early stages of discussions. They also seem to be considering bringing it bak as an animated feature, especially as the original Static Shock voice actor Phil LaMarr was part of the panel.
