After a successful fourth season on Netflix, it’s bizarre to think that work is only just really getting going on the final season of Stranger Things. Shortly after its release, the official writers’ account on Twitter revealed that they started work on the fifth and (sadly) final season of the Netflix cult hit.
Now, they have shared a new update as it seems like they are now grinding out the upcoming final season of Stranger Things. Of course, they aren’t teasing any plot lines or even characters but it definitely looks like they are only steps away from starting work on the episodes. What is surprising though is that this may have confirmed that the final season will consist of eight episodes.
Of course, things might change as they prepare the episodes and various plotlines but it does seem safe to say that eight episodes is what they are currently going for with the release. The series creators, the Duffer brothers, have hinted that they are avoiding another nine-episode season and trying to keep it smaller in the last season. While we’ll have to wait quite a bit until we get more details on what exactly the season has to offer, it looks like things are finally moving along for the final confrontation between Vecna and Eleven.
It looks like work on the final season of Stranger Things has finally begun. While it confirms that the wait for its release is going to be a long one, it’s great to know that we’re finally seeing some development on the project. The Russo Brothers have quite a few plans ahead of them with a spinoff and even a Harry Potter-style project heading out as a musical. Their Upside Down Studios will be busy but that doesn’t mean the focus won’t remain on their flagship franchise.
Netflix is definitely on board for the project, and luckily with this first image, we know that writing has started on the fifth and final season of Stranger Things. Sadly, they won’t give us a look at what they are writing down for the project but here’s hoping we get some ongoing updates that tease whatever the ending of the last episode gives us.
It’s a bit hard to make out who is part of the writing team but they are likely to have many from the previous one back in action. With the Upside Down finally unleashed into the real world, Vecna is ready to unleash his final plan and do whatever it is that an evil man does. The wait will be tough but at least it gives us time to listen to “Running Up That Hill” or “Masters of Puppets” on repeat for as long as possible until the next major 80s hit grabs our hearts.
It has been nearly a year since Squid Game first premiered on Netflix. Since then, the Korean drama has become Netflix’s most-watched show of all time with over 1.65 billion hours viewed within the first 28 days of release. And now, the drama is looking to make history with the Emmys, too.
Nominations for the 74th Emmy Awards were announced this morning and, unsurprisingly, Squid Game was nominated – as was leading man Lee Jung-jae. The series pulled in 14 nominations overall, including Outstanding Drama Series and Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series. More impressively, though, Squid Game has become the first non-English language drama to secure an Emmy nomination in the main drama category.
Elsewhere, another Netflix hit earned 13 nominations. Stranger Things was nominated for Outstanding Drama Series, Outstanding Production Design for a Narrative Period or Fantasy Program (One Hour or More), and Outstanding Casting for a Drama Series among others. Unfortunately, the show’s young cast looks to have been ignored in the acting categories, with many believing Sadie Sink’s work as Max was overlooked.
While the release date for Season 2 of Squid Game is still up in the air, the final season of Stranger Things is looking to enter production relatively soon. For now, fans can enjoy the first season of Squid Game on Netflix now, as well as the first four seasons of Stranger Things.
It’s almost a tradition at this point with Stranger Things that the Duffer Brothers make sure to introduce a loveable supporting character each season that the fandom becomes obsessed with, only to ultimately crush our hearts with their untimely death. It started back in Season 1 with Barb, who still has yet to get her justice, followed by Bob Newby, and then Alexei. So, the show has made sure that we should try our best to not get too attached to new characters even if we still repeat the same mistakes.
Season 4 introduced Eddie Munson, the metal head-loving dungeon master of the Hellfire Club. Like those who came before him, Eddie met his fate in the season 4 finale after being swarmed by Demobats while trying to buy more time for those who went after Vecna. While Eddie is seemingly dead, some evidence and dot-connecting could hint at resurrection for the character, with some help from the lore of Dungeons and Dragons, as well as one of Munson’s favorite metal bands.
Following the death of Eddie, Max seems to be up next on the chopping block, having just barely escaped Vecna’s grasp after Steve, Robin, and Nancy were able to take him down. Unfortunately, due to her wounds, Max does indeed die. At least, that is what we assumed until Eleven miraculously uses her abilities to bring Max back to life. If Eleven can do this, someone with the same powers would be able to do that as well. With Vecna surviving his encounter, he’d most likely be able to bring Munson back to life. However, after being mangled by Demobats, his body presumably being left in the Upside Down, he’s not likely to be the guy we came to love throughout Season 4.
This is where the Iron Maiden and Dungeons and Dragons inspirations come in. Hawkins’ resident metal head shares his namesake with an icon of the metal scene in the ’80s, the undead mascot of Iron Maiden. Of course, the only connection they share is the name and that he’s a fan, protecting their honor and declaring them as real music. Yet, there’s the potential that a resurrected Munson could sport a similar look to the band’s undead mascot, especially after what he went through.
This could lead to a storyline hinted at the beginning of the season, as their current campaign in Dungeons and Dragons always tends to hint at future storylines. At the Hellfire Club’s big session, the group is ambushed by Vecna within the game, and Mike, startled at the monster’s appearance, mentions that Vecna is dead. He was killed by Kas, the human vampire and trusted lieutenant to Vecna, who betrayed and killed the Arch-Lich within their stories’ canon.
In a way, Eddie would be quite the valuable asset in Vecna’s mission of revenge and furthering his invasion into the overworld. At first, he’s used as a ploy to mess with and break those who seek to oppose him. We’ve seen in Season 4 how Vecnas breaks his victim’s minds, and preys on their darkest memories, using them against them. Eddie would definitely be the perfect puppet for him to get into everyone’s head, especially Dustin’s.
The D&D character of Kas was dead. And after spending too much much time near the negative energy plane, he was transformed into a vampire. In Stranger Things, they could use the Upside Down as its equivalent, where Eddie died after fighting off a horde of Demobats. His weapons of choice are also clues. His weaponry is similar to the flaming sword and shield Kas uses, even if Eddie’s don’t ignite, the flaming sword can be seen in the Hellfire Club logo.
Some may also notice his Tattoos may hint at his return, with one being a demon puppeteered by a floating hand, possible as a reference to the hand that Kas cut off of Vecna and the control he would have over a risen Munson. Plus, it also matches the tease of him playing Metallica‘s Master of Puppets during the finale episode of Season 4. On top of all of this, he has a swarm of bats on his arm, foreshadowing his demise and possibly resurrection.
The fifth and final season of Stranger Things has even yet to be written and will most likely not release until sometime late in 2024. Still, in the meantime, we can all theorize just how our beloved metal head could return to Hawkins and further prove to be the hero he never thought he was. Getting one more chance to save his friends would seem like the perfect way to give him one last hurrah.
As Stranger Things 4 remains in the cultural zeitgeist for some more time past its recent release, news is beginning to circulate about new projects within the universe that will be in the works down the road. Firstly, The Duffer Brothers are officially launching Upside Down Pictures, a subsidiary production company under Netflix. The notable duo has hired experienced television executive Hilary Leavitt to run the organization. In a statement, The Duffer Brothers discussed their excitement for her to have an active role in their company.
It didn’t take long into our first meeting with Hilary, where we bonded over films like Jaws, Home Alone and Speed, to know we had found a kindred spirit. Hilary’s passion for storytelling is perhaps matched only by her passion for the storytellers themselves, for whom she is fiercely protective. No wonder so many writers and directors are drawn to working with her. She is a rare talent indeed, and we feel extremely grateful to have her at our side as we build Upside Down Pictures.
The Duffer Brothers
With the formation of this production company, news of the first batch of projects under their banner is being unveiled. Namely, a live-action Stranger Things spinoff series also created by The Duffer Brothers is in development. Not much is known about who and what will be covered in this new series. And with the large ensemble of characters still around, it’s hard to determine main contending options (assuming that the series will directly follow any of the current main cast of characters).
As well, Upside Down Pictures will follow the footsteps of the Harry Potter franchise, as a stage play set within the world, and the mythology of Stranger Things is currently in the works. Director Stephen Daldry of The Crown, Billy Elliot, and The Reader fame will be helming this project. It certainly will be fascinating to see if this universe and franchise can be successfully transposed into the stage medium. And overall, it will be a story worth following to see if these ancillary Stranger Things projects will have legs to stand on, especially when the series ultimately reaches its near conclusion.
With the recent release of the now complete fourth season of Stranger Things, questions are already being asked about the timeline for when fans can expect to watch the fifth and final season of the series. Unfortunately, fans will most likely have another relatively long wait to see how the hit Netflix series comes to an end. In an interview with Collider, series creators The Duffer Brothers provided a timeline for when the new season’s writing process would begin.
We’re going to take a little vacation in July. And then we’re going to come back. I know that the writer’s room is going to start in that first week of August.
The Duffer Brothers
Between August marking the beginning of the official writer’s room and the expansive production time that has now gone into Stranger Things, fans should temper their expectations on the show having its ultimate resolution in the near future. Though a potentially optimistic sign for the speed of this writing process is The Duffer Brothers also revealing that the overall planning for the final season is slightly ahead of schedule than if it was to be just written cold turkey beginning at the start of August.
We had all the scripts before we started shooting, so we could look at the whole thing as a whole. And we outlined all of five. So it really is four and five or like of a piece, and this was due to the six-month hiatus that we had due to the pandemic. So we don’t typically have as much time. It usually feels like the train is going down the tracks and Ross and I and our writers are just throwing down track as we’re going, once we’re halfway through the season. And for the first time ever, we were able to look at it globally, not just Season Four, but Season Five as well.
The Duffer Brothers
It certainly will be interesting to see how Stranger Things wraps up with the attention of the watching world around it. Essentially all that’s known at this point is that there will be some sort of time jump between the ending of the fourth season and the beginning of the fifth. This is very likely a wise decision with the young cast rapidly aging out of the high school-age characters they’re portraying, and will especially be the case with it still being a ways away from actually entering production.

Finally, after a prolonged wait, we got our hands on the final two episodes of Stranger Things‘ fourth season. After ending its first part on quite the high note, we’ve only had two more episodes left that would wrap up the storyline around the latest threat to Hawkins in the form of Vecna, or the originator of eleven’s powers as we’ve gone on to learn. Could the final episodes provide that send-off ahead of the final season that we’ve been waiting for?
As I pointed out in my review of the first part, there’s a lot the first part did right but it also suffered ab it from juggling way too many subplots throughout the season. It mostly was the result of scattering its cast across the United States and Russia, but it still offered some memorable set pieces and moments throughout; there’s a reason Running Up That Hill is back in the charts. The highs were definitely high but it still stumbled at times. In a way, the final two episodes continue that trend but pull it all together with a strong emotional finale.
Vecna once again proves why he is the threat that he is, as the team tries to put together a plan to take him down before he can enact his plan. There are times when we’re playing catch up with the big reveal of what he’s up to, everyone preparing for thSurprisingly,fore we head into the Upside Down. It’s surprising they didn’t set up the final episode as its second part as a movie finale, a lot is going on in its two-hour-plus run time. Still, there’s a lot going on with many of the subplots “kind” of coming together.
The time spent in Russia with Hopper, Joyce, and Murray still feels disconnected from the rest. Though it ends up with one of the most visually stunning moments in the finale as Hoppeets that moment. So, it definitely delivers in the ways that you want it to. Also, Hopper and Joyce getting the moment everyone has been waiting for was the tip of the iceberg to make you forget that it’s just very loosely connected to the overarching storyline. Who knows if it feeds into the finale more. But I also won’t complain about more Brett Gelman‘s Murray in the Netflix series.
Millie Bobbie Brown once again gives it her all as Eleven, as she not only has to find a way to help her friends but also faces the consciences of her own actions. The biggest selling point of this season was the connection between her past and the events that continue to unfold throughout Hawkins. Vecna has a personal grudge after the reveal we got last time, and she gets her moments to shine. I still think her character going back a few steps to move forward was a bit of a shame.
Also, it should be once again highlighted how Jamie Campbell Bower continues to be a great antagonist in the series. The reveal from the last “finale” was a powerful one but I do continue to feel that the character is still a bit too “human” to compete with some of the iconic monsters that we’ve seen throughout past seasons. There’s an additional reveal in these moments that could’ve easily been kept in the actual reveal of this season, but I hope it gets further explored due to the implications for the final season moving forward.
There are a lot of standouts in this season, but Joseph Quinn‘s Eddie Munson swiftly became a fan favorite for a reason this season. Probably the fastest turnover for a character in the show with a beautiful arc that came together nicely towards the end. His rock-out moment that was teased in trailers made for a memorable moment and wished there was more of it. The same goes for Eduardo Franco‘s Argyle who probably had some of the funniest moments throughout.
Though, the season continues to belong to Sadie Sink and Natalia Dyer‘s Nancy Wheeler, who continue to pull some powerful performances. The latter gets a truly badass time to shine while Sink‘s Max Mayfield offers that emotional gut punch we got from her earlier in the season. It’s hard not to talk about who gives some of the strongest performances throughout without giving anything away, but the final moments definitely hit the right notes.
Overall, the season has been strong but with some bumps along the way. In a way, the same is true for the final two episodes. Its emotional moments are the ones that truly hit strong and will play with your heart. Parts of it definitely bank on the Netflix show’s strengths and also let the series breathe where it needs to. We’re definitely entering the final part of this journey and if this season is anything to go by, we’ll likely be fighting back tears as the final moments wrap up over an upside-down Hawkins. I for one cannot wait to see how they wrap up this story.
It looks like we’re going to have another time skip going into the fifth and final season of the Duffer Brothers‘ iconic Stranger Things series. We’ve explored the 80s and all of its memorabilia but it looks like the cast’s continued aging has become a bit of an issue for the team to keep up and as a result, Ross Duffer confirmed that there will be another time skip going into the final season.

There were some moments where the age differences from the last season going into the current one stood out, and it seems the team is very aware of that fact. So, they will try to remedy it with another time skip. Surprisingly, they revealed that they are still actively working on Season 4, as two more episodes are set to release in July.
Believe it or not, we’re still working on Season 4. We’re trying to finish the final two episodes, they’re so massive.
Ross Duffer
So, they haven’t even started writing anything for the fifth season. Some time ago they did reveal that they already pitched their vision of the ending, and now it’s just about getting all the episodes together to bring that vision to life. All eyes are currently on the final episodes of Season 4 and it seems we won’t get an update on the final season for some time.

One week has officially passed since the release of Stranger Thing 4’s first volume of episodes, and fans across the world have been getting caught up with the latest installment of the franchise. With that, discussions have begun to circulate on what may transpire in the second volume releasing on July 1. One major topic has been the potential fates of the many characters as they traverse into the intense climaxes of the season. Stranger Things has especially been known to be a show with a low body count of main characters, with Billy Hargrove and Bob Newby essentially being the only two to have definitive deaths amongst the principal cast. However, this season’s ensemble has grown to such a large extent that one would have to think some have to die simply for the sake of being able to manage all the characters heading into the final season. In this article we will take a look into the likelihood of survival for all main characters currently in Stranger Things 4.
Characters with 0% Likelihood to Die: Joyce, Eleven, Dustin, Lucas, Robin, Erica
We will start by quickly going through all of the characters that, for all intents and purposes, will be penciled in to be part of Season 5 of Stranger Things. Joyce Byers still has a story to be told as she is the mother of both Will and Jonathan; there needs to be an explanation as to why she decided to essentially abandon them to rescue Hopper from Russia. It’s also fitting for the show’s original “main” lead character played by Winona Ryder to be part of the show’s endgame. As well, Millie Bobby Brown’s Eleven has become too much of a lynchpin for the show to be killed off before its end. As for Dustin and Lucas, the characters are fan favorites and have fertile story opportunities to have an untimely end in the immediate future. And the same can be said as Season 3 standouts Robin and Erica — the latter especially would be too traumatizing of a killing for a young middle-school girl.
Jim Hopper: Likelihood to be Killed – 10%
The individual character being covered will be David Harbour’s Jim Hopper, the former Hawkins Police Chief being held captive in Russia after being presumed dead. Him being the main fake-out death of Season 3 makes him a safe bet to outright survive past the remaining Season 4 episodes. As well, there still has to be the emotional reunion between him and his surrogate daughter, Eleven, at some point in the show’s duration. If he is killed in these last two episodes, it will make the entire C-plot of this season for relative naught.
Will Byers: Likelihood to be Killed – 20%
As the character who has been the core of the show in the first two seasons, Will Byers carries a large amount of internal trauma and grief. That is something that would indeed make him an ideal target for Vecna, and him lacking the requisite information to survive his wrath could make him a prime target. Though he is especially low in percentage as it would be in very poor taste to just instantly kill off a character who is very likely about to come out as gay at the end of the season.
Mike Wheeler: Likelihood to be Killed – 30%
After having been the pure protagonist of the first season, Mike Wheeler’s character has struggled to really find footing in the writing of the show since then. He has essentially become a caricature of a doofy 80s young teen that struggles to connect with his girlfriend and friends. In my opinion, Mike should be killed off this season as it would be the largest twist the show has seen by killing a true main protagonist. As well, his death would hold large ramifications to the relationships amongst the remainder of more interesting lead characters (no shade is intended towards Finn Wolfhard, who is indeed a really strong actor). However, that would probably be too much of a risk for this show to take.
Max Mayfield: Likelihood to be Killed – 30%
One may be curious as to why Max is not in the 0% group after the arc seen in the fourth episode of this season, aka the high-water mark of the show since the first season (and maybe the outright best episode in the entire Stranger Things series). However, the eulogizing letters Max wrote to all her friends remain a smoking gun that has yet to fully go off. The likelihood that she dies in Season 4 is pretty low and this could be the fate she unfortunately meets in the final season, but as long as those letters remain unread by the group, audiences should be on high death alert for young Max Mayfield.
Nancy Wheeler: Likelihood to be Killed – 40%
Following the completion of Stranger Thing 4’s first volume of episodes, my major takeaway is that one of the Nancy/Jonathan/Steve love-triangle has to die by the end of this season. A death would provide dramatic stakes to this dynamic, and could actually just outright end any romance subplot due to the trauma. I’d argue that Nancy is the least likely of this trio to die. Especially as she has become the key to understanding the history of Vecna, something that will be critical towards the end of this season and potentially for the show’s end times.
Eddie Munson: Likelihood to be Killed – 50%
Joseph Quinn’s Eddie Munson has become a massive standout as a new character this season. Very quickly, he has captured the hearts of audiences as the outsider is dealing with being the prime suspect in the string of murders happening across Hawkins. While one would think he’d need to survive to prove his innocence against Vecna, it would be much in line with how Stranger Things operates for the show to develop a popular new character and subsequently kill him off by season’s end. As well, I struggle to see the world where both of Dustin’s surrogate older brothers live to see the final season.
Vecna: Likelihood to be Killed – 50%
Stranger Things has finally found itself a central antagonist from the Upside Down that maintains captivating pathos and can stand on its own as a massive threat in the show. Though with the show seldom leaning towards overtly dark season endings, I’d argue there’s a 50/50 chance the story of Vecna is wrapped up in the next two episodes of the show. Then again, if I had my druthers about me, Vecna would come out relatively victorious this season and create an Empire Strikes Back type scenario for the protagonist ensemble heading into the true final act of the show.
Jonathan Byers: Likelihood to be Killed – 70%
Amongst the love triangle mentioned earlier in this article, I’m of the belief that Jonathan should be the character that dies. While being a compelling character within the first season of the show, there hasn’t been much for the character to do beyond being a romantic partner to Nancy. Separating him entirely from Hawkins has made this concept even more clear. His death would certainly be very emotional, but could also keep more characters around that the Duffer Brothers have active plans for. Also, I think there is a very compelling story with Joyce in having her deal with straying so far from being the over-protective mother in the first season and it now leading to the actual death of one of her sons.
Murray Bauman: Likelihood to be Killed – 80%
If Stranger Things wants to have the Russia plotline this season hold serious stakes beyond returning Hopper into the fold, killing off Murray Bauman would successfully do that. He is exactly the type of the character that this series is known to kill off as someone who has become a regular fixture, but still remains on the periphery of the main ensemble. His comedy style, while appealing to some, might have less of a place in the growing intensity of the Vecna plotline and where the show could in theory head towards in its final season. There is also in theory less trauma for general audiences in killing off the older characters of the show than the larger swath of young adult characters, making Murray’s demise that much more likely.
Brenner and Owens: Likelihood to be Killed – 90%
As we now reach towards the characters with high likelihoods to die, I’ve combined both Martin Brenner and Sam Owens into this one entry as I believe they will share the same fate. These characters have provided Eleven the ability to regain her powers and, in theory, become a more actualized version of herself, and I don’t think there is much more utility for them beyond that now. Especially with such a large cast, it would be reasonable to close off anyone who isn’t absolutely necessary for how the show ends. With the US government now closing in on their secret project and bunker, Matthew Modine and Paul Reiser’s characters will likely meet their untimely end and provide El some more trauma before her return to Hawkins.
Steve Harrington: Likelihood to be Killed – 90%
There is not a character more set up to meet their maker by the end of this season than Steve Harrington. While the hypothetical death of Max was built upon for the first four episodes of this season, Steve’s has been a long-build throughout. Steve’s entire arc this season has been highlighting to him (and the audience) how much he has become beloved by the group around him, serving as the quintessential friend and babysitter. With that in mind, killing him here would provide the most amount of heartbreak and dramatic tension for the season and would showcase that the show is getting serious as it enters its eleventh hour. Losing Joe Keery from the show would be an absolute shame, but it definitely seems most likely that this is the direction we are heading towards.
Come July 1 and the release of Stranger Things 4’s second volume on Netflix, we will find out where exactly the show is heading and the fates of all characters.

It certainly is one of Netflix’s strongest series and has been one of their most iconic since the introduction of the Netflix Marvel shows, as it came from that same era. Sadly, the show will be ending with its upcoming fifth season and it’ll be interesting to see if they’ll find an English show that can fill the void it’ll leave behind.
They have some high-quality productions on the horizon, such as a live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender and One Piece, which are big enough IPs to potentially take the top spot. So, we’ll see if they potentially will explore some spinoffs from Stranger Things as well once the main cast leaves the show behind to further venture into the Upside-Down.
