Taika Waititi Currently Not Involved With ‘Thor 5’

Taika Waititi offered his unique sense of humor to reinvent the character of Thor just as Chris Hemsworth hinted that perhaps he was slowly done with the character. Yet, there was some backlash with the release of Thor: Love and Thunder given that it fully embraced its Flash Gordon inspiration and offered a full-on comedy even for Marvel Studios’ usual comedic standards.

So, there’s been a big push for someone else to take over the franchise, as it’s also the only one from the original Phase 1 hero still going on with his own franchise. While we still don’t know if they are actively working on a sequel, it does seem like Taika Waititi isn’t likely to be part of if, as he reacts to rumors of a fifth entry.

I wouldn’t know if that’s accurate. I know that I won’t be involved…I’m going to concentrate on these other films that I’ve signed on for.

    Taika Waititi

He goes on to state that he’s already signed up for the next six or seven years, such as the Star Wars film he’s still busy working on that he states is “still marinating.” Yet, he also shares that he loved working with Marvel Studios and if he doesn’t return for Thor there might be another project for him.

So that’s six, seven years gone. I’d imagine another ‘Thor’ would be a lot sooner than that…But I love Marvel, I love working with them. I love Chris.

    Taika Waititi

It’ll be interesting to see what the future holds for Thor, as we don’t know when we might see him return or even what role he might have in the future of the franchise. As he’s become a father, he might be off somewhere in space trying to raise his daughter Love and won’t return until the right pieces fall into place.

  • SWCE: Lucasfilm CEO Offers Update on Rian Johnson and Taika Waititi’s ‘Star Wars’ Films

SWCE: Lucasfilm CEO Offers Update on Rian Johnson and Taika Waititi’s ‘Star Wars’ Films

Star Wars Celebration came with an announcement of an entire trilogy of new Star Wars films. Yet, it once again leaves us with quite a few questions surrounding the ones that have been announced. Recent reports hinted that quite a few planned films were scrapped and even the latest announced film just lost its writer. So, there’s a lack of hope that they’d truly move forward with their projects.

Luckily, Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy was able to offer some insight into where they stand with those films. It seems that the Rian Johnson trilogy that was announced a while back is pretty much on hold for eternity, as Johnson is busy with the Glass Onion sequel and seemingly has no interest to return anytime soon.

Rian and I talk all the time. He is unbelievably busy. So we’re not actively involved in anything at the moment because he’s doing another one of the ‘Glass Onion’ movies and then God knows what else. But he really wants to step back into the space. It’s a big commitment of time, so that’s really on him.

    Kathleen Kennedy

In regard to Taika Waititi’s mysterious film, she only stated that he is actively working don’t he’s script all on his own. After Thor: Love and Thunder’s reception, there might be some concern he might take the franchise into a goofier direction given his “very, very unique voice” but it seems they won’t be getting involved until he is ready to direct it.

Taika is still working away. He’s writing the script himself. He doesn’t really want to bring others into that process and I don’t blame him. He has a very, very unique voice. So we want to protect that and that’s what he’s doing. But we’re going to make that one day.

    Kathleen Kennedy

It’s definitely interesting to know that at least Waititi’s project is seemingly moving forward, but it is strange that they won’t just outright state that they have no more plans for Johnson’s trilogy. By the time they actually get films out, his project might even be superfluous given whatever his initial goals were with the project. Of course, perhaps them actually pushing out films might inspire him to once again give it his full attention. For now, we can only continue to wait and see if the franchise actually returns to theaters.

  • Taika Waititi Would Only Add More Jokes to a ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ Director’s Cut

Taika Waititi Would Only Add More Jokes to a ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ Director’s Cut

There have been many times as of late where fans have wanted to see the director’s cut of a recently released film. It’s not always the case but with success stories like Zack Snyder’s Justice League, it became a bit of a habit. Yet, Thor: Love and Thunder director Taika Waititi doesn’t really share those thoughts and highlights the importance of studios and directors working together, as otherwise, he’d release a “four and a half hours long” movie.

I’ve been thinking about director’s cuts. I watch director’s cuts of a lot of other directors. They suck. Director’s cuts are not good. Directors need to be controlled sometimes, and if I was to say, ‘ah, you wanna watch my director’s cut? It’s four and a half hours long!’ It’s not good, at four and a half hours. There’s a lot of cup-of-tea breaks in there, you don’t even have to pause it.

    Taika Waititi

He also highlights that he’d mostly just add cuts scenes and add a few more jokes in the film, which many have critics have actually pointed out was an issue with the film’s overall tonee.

I’d say my cut would probably have a few more jokes in there. There might be a couple of deleted scenes, but as I always say, a scene is deleted because it’s not good enough to be in the film. I think the deleted scenes section on the DVD, not that they use them anymore, should just be a list of the scenes and no links so you can’t click on them!

    Taika Waititi

So, if you were hoping for some kind of director’s cut you’ll not get one. Yes, they have teased that quite a few sequences were cut from the film, but it does match Taika Waititi‘s directing style to throw everything he has against the wall to see what sticks. So, it does seem safe to say that his version would definitely include quite a few more jokes.

  • Taika Waititi’s ‘Star Wars’ Film Reportedly Eyeing Early 2023 Production Start

Taika Waititi’s ‘Star Wars’ Film Reportedly Eyeing Early 2023 Production Start

There have been many theories on when we’d finally get a new Star Wars film. Lucasfilm has been solely focused on their Disney+ ventures with Andor on the horizon and the recent release of Obi-Wan Kenobi. Patty Jenkin‘s Rogue Squadron was originally going to start filming to release next year, but it looks like Taika Waititi‘s upcoming original film is the one that’ll start production sooner rather than later. In the latest Heat Vision entry for The Hollywood Reporter, they reveal that the film is eyeing a 2023 production start.

As the piece points out, Waititi has hinted that he’s not quite done with the story and that we may not see it anytime soon, but their sources are pointing out that they’re very likely to start next year. The only thing that could postpone it is Lucasfilm, which has become a bit infamous for how it tackles its film division and has become a reason for pushing out releases.

Waititi is jumping into his next project quite quickly, but there have been hints that he has another project on the horizon. So, he may once again be overscheduling himself, such as he revealed that he edited Thor: Love and Thunder while still wearing his costume from playing Blackbeard on Our Flag Means Death. So, we’ll see if there will be an official announcement in the near future.

  • Taika Waititi’s ‘Star Wars’ Film Gets Tentative Release Date

Taika Waititi’s ‘Star Wars’ Film Gets Tentative Release Date

As the Star Wars franchise has focused very heavily on the side of streaming with a slew of shows for Disney+, questions have been raised about what’s in store for future theatrical releases for the franchise. Some were under the impression that news about this would be revealed during the Star Wars Celebration panel, but the focus remained solely on upcoming shows. However, fans now have some indication for what Lucasfilm has planned for Star Wars films.

In an interview with Total Film, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy confirmed that the upcoming Taika Waititi-directed film is currently slated to be the next theatrical release for the Star Wars franchise. Lucasfilm is aiming to have the film released in late 2023, but Kennedy made note that nothing was officially locked in during the interview. This marks a change in plans for the Star Wars film slate as the Patty Jenkins-directed Rogue Squadron film was originally slated to release for December 22, 2023. However, the film has been moved to the back burner for some time as the script continues to be written. With all this in mind, fans should still bookmark that date as the potential release for the Waititi film as it moves up the release order slate.

Taika Waititi currently has Thor: Love and Thunder with Marvel Studios slated to release on July 8, 2023. Beyond that, the popular director should have ample time in 2022 to focus on a potential production for this developing film. There will be many exciting questions to be answered about the nature of this film that will hopefully be revealed in the coming months as we move towards a return of Star Wars to the big screen.

  • Taika Waititi To Direct Jodorowsky’s Graphic Novel ‘THE INCAL’

Taika Waititi To Direct Jodorowsky’s Graphic Novel ‘THE INCAL’

Taika Waititi makes his move from one famous comic to another, with The Incal, a graphic novel by legendary director Alejandro Jodorowsky and artist Moebius. The Thor: Love and Thunder director is attached to adapt and direct The Incal, with help from regular collaborator Jermaine Clement. The announcement video can be seen below:

Jodorowsky had nothing but nice words to say about Waititi:

When Humanoids’ CEO Fabrice Giger introduced me to Taika Waititi’s work, it became obvious to me that he was the one. I fully trust Taika’s creativity to give THE INCAL a stunning take, intimate and at the same time of cosmic proportions.

For the uninitiated, The Incal is a cosmic pic about a detective who stumbles upon the titular relic, known to bestow immense power, which other evil space factions are after. The saga chronicles the detective’s journey throughout the vast galaxy as he meets all sorts of quirky characters.

Jodorowsy’s vision, to say the least, is pretty damn trippy. Partnered with Moebius’ impressionistic visuals, the world that they put together for The Incal is nothing short of awe-inspiring. It’ll be interesting to see how Taika manages to wrangle all the crazy ideas and visuals together.
