  • ‘Tron: Ares’ Cast Continues to Grow With Jodie Turner-Smith and Greta Lee

‘Tron: Ares’ Cast Continues to Grow With Jodie Turner-Smith and Greta Lee

Disney is finally returning to the iconic Tron franchise once again. It’s been quite some time since Tron Legacy was released in theaters, but the latest entry decides to move into a whole new direction that’ll likely only loosely connects to how the Grid was brought into existence.

So far, we only knew that Jared Leto was going to star in the film, who shortly after even “accidentally” leaked the title of the film that will be known as Tron Ares. Now, they are seemingly gearing up for production with quite a few different casting additions that are quite promising for the latest entry.

Now, they have also added Past Lives breakout Greta Lee and Queen & Slim’s Jodie Turner-Smith to the cast, who is also going to join another Disney property in the Star Wars Disney+ series The Acolyte. We’ll see if some more casting announcements are heading our way in the coming weeks.

Leto is set to play Ares the program that ends up becoming sentient and ends up in the human world. Lee will take on the role of a video game programmer and tech CEO, who wants to change the world. As one knows about technology, it definitely looks like a cautionary tale is going to explore the effects of programs entering the human world. Even if it makes you wonder if director Joachim Rønning will bring back the visual style we saw in Legacy.

  • It’s Tronnin’ Time! Jared Leto’s ‘Tron’ Film is a Go

It’s Tronnin’ Time! Jared Leto’s ‘Tron’ Film is a Go

A third film in the Tron franchise, Tron: Ares, has finally been given a green light at Disney. Jared Leto, who has attempted to get the project up and running for the past six years, will star in the film which will be a direct sequel to 2010’s Tron: Legacy. Joachim Rønning (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil) has entered into talks to direct the film which will work from a script by Jesse Wigutow.

A third Tron installment has been in the works in one way or another since before the release of Legacy, which featured a cameo by Cillian Murphy as Edward Dillinger Jr., who looked set to be the villain of what was then planned to be an ongoing franchise. Legacy director Joseph Kosinski was expected to return for the third film and in 2015 there was word that a start of production on Tron 3 was right around the corner before Disney pulled the plug on the return to The Grid. Leto picked up the torch to get a third film made in 2017 and now his efforts seem to have come to fruition.

No release date was given in THR’s report, though rumors of a 2025 release have swirled online for some time. No story details have been provided at the moment nor is the identity of Leto’s character known nor if any of the stars from either of the original films will return.

  • REPORT: First Look at ‘Tron 3’s New Flynn’s Arcade Hints at an Early 2022 Production Start

REPORT: First Look at ‘Tron 3’s New Flynn’s Arcade Hints at an Early 2022 Production Start

It looks like our friends over at DisInsider may have gotten their hands on something quite interesting. Last year, it seemed like Disney was moving forward with a third entry in the cult classic Tron series, which will receive the sub-title, Ares. Jared Leto is attached with Garth Davis set to direct the project. Sadly, news died down considerably since and we haven’t really gotten any new details since. Luckily, it seems that DisInsider’s John Bishop was able to get his hands on some set photos featuring an updated look for the iconic Flynn’s Arcade.

If sets are already being built and prepared, it’s a good sign that production may start in early 2022. Of course, this isn’t enough to really hammer down a specific start date, but it’s enough to at least get a feeling that things are finally moving forward. It’s uncertain if they’ll dive into the classic designs provided by the original Tron from 1982, or continue the neon look from Tron: Legacy.

The return of Flynn’s Arcade does confirm that it’ll continue the building blocks set by the previous, as this is the location where Sam would get transported into the digitized world of The Grid. It might also be where the next storyline starts off, as the next person gets sucked into this new world.
