  • ‘The Boys’ Will Crossover With ‘Varsity’ Spinoff Series

‘The Boys’ Will Crossover With ‘Varsity’ Spinoff Series

The Boys’ third season may have come to a close, but the series’ universe is just getting started. Amazon Prime is currently gearing up for the release of the franchise’s first live-action spin-off, The Boys Presents: Varsity, which is set to debut on the streaming service before the main show gets a chance to return. Set parallel to the events of The Boys Season 3, Varsity will examine the world of Supes from the perspective of young characters attending the Vought-run Godolkin University School of Crimefighting. Described as “part college show, part Hunger Games—with all the heart, satire, and raunch of The Boys”, the series will shine a light on the next generation of “superheroes”, with a focus on the X-Men parody team – the G-Men.

Varsity will be helmed by Agent Carter’s Michele Fazekas and Tara Butters, but it’s an interview with The Boys’ showrunner Eric Kripke that’s dropped an interesting new tidbit about the project. The creative spoke with Deadline about the future of the growing franchise and revealed that the new series will feature crossovers with his own. He explained that major moments from the latest batch of The Boys episodes will have a direct impact on Varsity, with the latter show doing the same to its flagship heading into Season 4:

There’s definitely crossover, and we’re doing our best to design a universe that sees some of the issues and storylines in Season 3 hand off to the first season in Varsity. Like there’s a presidential campaign happening in the background of that season, and there’s certain things that are happening at that school that are both in reaction to Season 3 of The Boys. There’s Soldier Boy, etcetera, but also some new storylines that are happening in that season of the spinoff that we have to pick up and take into Season 4 of the show.

    Eric Kripke

There is not currently a release date set for Varsity, but with filming underway, it’s likely it will arrive on Amazon sometime in 2023. Patrick Schwarzenegger, Sean Patrick Thomas, Jaz Sinclair, Marco Pigossi, Chance Perdomo, and Shelley Conn are set to star, among others.

  • REPORT: Composer Natalie Holt to Return for ‘Loki’ Season 2

REPORT: Composer Natalie Holt to Return for ‘Loki’ Season 2

Loki’s the first second season for any Marvel Studios-produced Disney+ series yet unlike other shows that try to keep a consistent team throughout, a completely new team is taking over. Kate Herron, the director who initially pitched the show, has left with Moon Knight directing duo Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead taking over. Even head writer Michael Waldron has passed the torch to Eric Martin. Luckily, one member remains according to a new report.

According to Inverse, it looks like composer Natalie Holt is set to return in the second season to bring back the iconic soundtrack that defined the series. She’s been quite busy with work on Obi-Wan Kenobi and going on to tackle Batgirl next, but it’s great to know she’ll also be back for Loki after giving it its distinctive sound. So, we might expect the same direction of the soundtrack for the series as we had in the past.

We still know very little about the direction of this series, but the base concept is probably one of the few that could potentially keep going no matter where the MCU continues to evolve. With the multiverse unleashed after the actions of Sylvie in the first season, who knows what trouble the TVA and a once again stranded Loki might have to face.

With a new team at the helm, it does seem like we’ll get some twists and new additions for this season to make it stand out from the previous one. Whatever direction they take, we can’t wait to see how it might tie into the overarching tease of Kang the Conqueror’s arrival implies.

  • SDCC Reveals When We Can Expect Marvel Studios’ “Mega-Panel”

SDCC Reveals When We Can Expect Marvel Studios’ “Mega-Panel”

Just recently, it was revealed that Marvel Studios’ new animation division will get its very own panel at San Diego Comic-Con. While we only got teases of what’s to come, it was hinted at we’ll see a lot more from their animation projects. Now, it seems like more details have dropped for the Hall H panel for the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s future.

In a new report by Deadline, Kevin Feige‘s “mega-panel” has been confirmed for 5 PM on Saturday, July 23rd. So, we’ll definitely get quite the double whammy with the upcoming projects. It’s unsure just how much they’ll show considering D23 and Disney+ Day are also on the horizon, but it’ll be exciting nonetheless.

Marvel Studios’ usual tradition was always a showcase of their upcoming Phase or new entries to the MCU. Yet, they may have a stronger focus on Black Panther: Wakanda Forever given that the film is going to release in November and we still don’t have a trailer for it. They may be keeping the “big” announcements for the Disney-owned event later on.

No matter what, there’s something special about these events and they also tend to create some build-up that Phase 4 may have needed if it weren’t for COVID delaying a lot of the releases. So, we’ll see how they enter the event and what they might be bringing to the show for those that are attending, as well as what they’ll share with those at home.

  • Netflix Adds Fan-Favorite ‘Spectacular Spider-Man’ Animated series

Netflix Adds Fan-Favorite ‘Spectacular Spider-Man’ Animated series

We’ve been enjoying a splurge of great Spider-Man films with No Way Home breaking records even during the pandemic. Yet, many also fondly remember some of his greatest hits like the animated series like The Spectacular Spider-Man, which sadly ended a little too early due to the rights issues between Sony and Marvel. Now, the fan-favorite series created by Greg Weisman (Gargoyles) and Victor Cook (Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated) may find a second life as it’s been added to Netflix.

Luckily, they’ve added both seasons for those hoping to give it another shot. It should be noted that the project is likely part of Sony’s long-term deal with Netflix which they’ll add to their library. We’ve recently seen some of the classic Spider-Man films join Disney+, which were on the Netflix streamer for quite some time. So, we might have to wait a few years and it could also find its way to a Disney-owned streamer.

One of the things that made Spectacular Spider-Man so special was how it balanced the more personal life of Peter Parker with his time as a hero. It also was a series that didn’t shy away from Peter’s darker side and let him face the consequences of his own actions in a story that continued to evolve over time. Some people are hoping that its addition to Netflix may spark interest in reviving the project similar to how others were given a second life through their popularity on streaming services. So, we’ll see if there’s a future for this project to return after all.

  • Major ‘The Boys’ Actor Will Play New Character in Season 4

Major ‘The Boys’ Actor Will Play New Character in Season 4

The latest season finale for The Boys was all sorts of messed up, but there was one moment in particular that likely shocked viewers more than others. After spending the majority of Season 3 in hiding from Jensen Ackles’ Soldier Boy, fan favorite baddie Black Noir finally worked up the courage to confront his demons and return to Vought Tower. Unfortunately, his reunion with Toni Starr’s Homelander didn’t go exactly as planned, and the silent menace instead found himself violently gutted on the tower floor. Black Noir’s sudden death was as surprising as it was gruesome, with the move coming as soon as the show had finally begun to reveal the character’s tragic backstory. The decision to kill Noir off also deprived fans of their chance to see him face off against his former Payback captain in an epic final showdown.

Luckily for Nate Mitchell, the stunt man who spent three seasons behind the mask, Noir’s death will apparently not be the end of his time on the show. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, showrunner Eric Kripke revealed that Mitchell would return as an entirely new version of Black Noir for The Boys’ upcoming fourth batch of episodes. After teasing playfully that a character who “is completely silent and in a black mask can be recast”, the former Supernatural creative explained that Season 4 will feature a brand new character donning the infamous all-black ensemble:

It’s definitely not the last we’ve seen of Black Noir as a hero. It’s just that the guy who was inside [the Noir suit] in season 3, he’s gone. But we have Nathan playing a really interesting and hilarious character who wears the suit next season. We’ll explore it as the season goes on, but Nathan plays a whole new character.

    Eric Kripke

Kripke says he broke the news to Mitchell before filming on Season 3 began, hoping it would ease his pain of losing the original Noir interpretation. This decision was also why a different actor, Fritzy-Klevans Destine, was brought in for flashback scenes involving a speaking, maskless Noir. This way, things will be less confusing when Mitchell’s face is shown as someone else in Season 4.

The entirety of The Boys is now streaming on Amazon Prime.

  • Newly Leaked ‘She-Hulk’ Promo Offers First Full Look at Comic-Inspired Outfit

Newly Leaked ‘She-Hulk’ Promo Offers First Full Look at Comic-Inspired Outfit

We’ve gotten quite a few looks at the upcoming series She-hulk, which will see Tatiana Maslany take on the role of Bruce Banner’s cousin, Jennifer Walters. While we already had a trailer, Marvel and Disney have been quite coy about showing the full design for the character’s comic-inspired design. We did get a glimpse through some promo art, but a new set as shared by @MCU_Facility may have given us our best look yet at what her full design will look like.

It’ll be interesting to see what the design looks like in live-action but there’s an interesting design concept going on here. The visuals are much more flashy and might be used to highlight her home to also add some color instead of just going with a simple lawyer concept. The last version of the logo seemingly jumped into that direction before they shifted gears once again.

With some time before the series releases and we’re anxiously awaiting a second trailer that shows how far the CG has gone since the first reveal. Corridor Digital has recently highlighted the quality of the work done on the character, especially in contrast to how the internet has reacted. So, we’ll see how much legwork the second trailer is going to have to make up for.

  • First Look at ‘X-Men ’97’, ‘Marvel Zombies’ and ‘What If…?’ Season 2 Confirmed for SDCC

First Look at ‘X-Men ’97’, ‘Marvel Zombies’ and ‘What If…?’ Season 2 Confirmed for SDCC

We were all quite surprised when Marvel Studios announced its return to San Diego Comic-Con this year. Not only were D23 and Disney+ Day on the horizon, but the last time they visited the event is when they showcased their Phase 4 plans. Now, it seems that they won’t just have their iconic Hall H showcase, but also confirmed that there will be an additional showcase for their future animation projects.

On the official SDCC website, the schedule has arrived for Friday, July 22nd. From 11.45 to 1.15 PM, they will seemingly have a panel hosted by Brad Winderbaum, Marvel Studios Head of Streaming, Television, and Animation alongside Visual Development Head Ryan Meinerding. They also tease that there will be special guests. Yet, the big thing is the confirmed exclusive first looks at What If…? Season 2, X-Men ’97, and Marvel Zombies. They also tease that more is coming as well.

It’s surprising they aren’t highlighting the only other confirmed MCU tie-in show, Spider-Man: Freshman Year. They’ve been working on it for quite a bit but it seems like the series might not release for some time. Of course, they might be keeping that project close to their chest as it’ll act as a prequel to Tom Holland#s run as the character, but it’s uncertain if he’ll return to voice himself given he’s technically signed under Sony and not Marvel Studios. With special guests teased, it would be quite a great surprise if they managed to make it work.

  • First Set Photos Seemingly Surface for Apple TV+’s ‘Godzilla’ Spinoff Series

First Set Photos Seemingly Surface for Apple TV+’s ‘Godzilla’ Spinoff Series

Here’s a surprise, as while we know that WandaVision‘s Matt Shakman has joined the production team to direct the untitled Godzilla spinoff series for Apple TV+, we know very little about the rest. Only recently did we get the actual casting announcements for five additions while rumors are still circling the web on father-son duo Kurt and Wyatt Russell joining the production. Now, it seems that they are already setting up camp (literally) in Vancouver to film the Monsterverse entry.

Twitter user @JaniceRafael has shared that a production company EP Hydronaut Canada is building what seems like a refuge camp. The site Vancouver is Awesome highlights it is part of the Godzilla series and will feature 180 background actors, teasing the scale of the production.

We don’t see a lot but it does give us a window into the production timing. It might be safe to say that they’ll start working on the Apple TV+ series rather soon if they are already preparing sets. The series announcement came after the success of Godzilla vs. Kong, which in some ways kicked off the current revival of the theatrical box office. With a sequel also already confirmed for 2024, it doesn’t look like the Monsterverse is slowing down anytime soon.

We still don’t know who will be the focus of the next film given how the previous one ended, but it does seem like the Toho monster is going to leave his presence known in the TV series while rumors are pointing to a Song of Kong-inspired sequel heading to theaters. Perhaps we’ll find out more as the series gets an official title.

  • ‘Highfire’ Series Moving From Amazon to Paramount

‘Highfire’ Series Moving From Amazon to Paramount

Nicolas Cage‘s oddity renaissance will continue on Paramount+. Highfire, a new series based on Eoin Colfer‘s novel of the same name, has officially moved from it’s originally announced home on Amazon Prime. The live-action adaptation is being described as “True Detective-meets-Pete’s Dragon“, and is set to star Cage as Lord Highfire, a once-mighty dragon who now lives in a shack in the swamps of Louisiana. Going by “Vern”, the beast spends it’s days as an alcohlic, drinking massive amounts of vodka and watching Flashdance on cable television. It’s not until Highfire meets Squib, a human teenager smuggling booze for the local mob, that he’s forced into another life-altering adventure.

Highfire, a “gritty crime drama with doses of magical realism“, is only the latest in a recent string of high concept projects from Cage. The actor, whose image has become synonymous with over-the-top performances, has spent the past few years pumping out well-received indie flicks like Pig and The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent. Next on his list are Renfield, in which he will appear as Count Dracula, and two separate Westerns, Butcher’s Crossing and The Old Way. The upcoming job with Paramount+ will be his first leading television role, after a previous attempt at bringing Joe Exotic to life at Amazon failed to materialize. Highfire will be adapted by Davey Holmes, the creator of Get Shorty on Epix, and will be produced by MGM. The project has been in development since 2020, when it was initially revealed by Deadline.

  • ‘She-Hulk: Attorney at Law’ To Have Amie Doherty as Composer

‘She-Hulk: Attorney at Law’ To Have Amie Doherty as Composer

She-Hulk: Attorney at Law has found its composer.

Amie Doherty will be the composer for the upcoming Marvel Studios series on Disney+, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. Some of Doherty’s work includes Spirit Untamed, Undone, Happiest Season, The High Note, Battle at Big Rock, and Here and Now.

The series will be the studios’ first foray into legal dramas and features Tatiana Maslany as Jennifer Walters, the cousin of Bruce Banner, as she traverses through her life as a single attorney in her 30s — all while she deals with being a green six-foot-seven-inch superpowered being. Mark Ruffalo will guest star as Smart Hulk. Tim Roth also makes his return as the Abomination after a brief appearance in Shang-Chi.

Jameela Jamil, Josh Segarra, Ginger Gonzaga, Jon Bass and Renée Elise Goldsberry also star in the nine-episode series.

Jessica Gao served as the head writer on the show. She is also listed as an executive producer on the project alongside Marvel Studios titans Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, and Brad Winderbaum. Also earning an executive producer credit is Kat Coiro who directed episodes of the series along with Anu Valia.

Additionally, Doherty will be a participant in the film/TV composer panel Musical Anatomy of a Superhero at San Diego Comic-Con later this month. One can hope that she will briefly discuss her role on the series there.

She-Hulk: Attorney at Law premieres on August 17.
