  • Star Wars: The Evolution of the ’Obi-Wan’ Project

Star Wars: The Evolution of the ’Obi-Wan’ Project

When Disney acquired Lucasfilm in Oct. 2012 for $4 billion, it was clear the Mouse House had the intent to revamp the franchise. What no one could imagine at the time was how expansive the Star Wars universe would become… on the small screen.

With The Force Awakens, Lucasfilm looked to kickstart a new story within the beloved franchise by bringing back some of the core cast members of the original trilogy. While the latest trilogy hasn’t necessarily been the rest-received, Lucasfilm has had better luck on the small screen thanks to The Mandalorian. Now, the studio is looking to explore characters we’ve come to know before whether it be through the films or animated series. One of those projects is the long-rumored Obi-Wan, which brings back both Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensenfrom the prequel films. As exciting as their returns to the franchise might be, the stars haven’t always had the best reaction to being a part of the Star Wars universe – and rightfully so.

In a new interview with Vanity Fair, McGregor explains how the poor reception to 1999’s The Phantom Menace affected the cast and crew knowing there were still two more installments ahead. “It was hard because it was such a huge decision to do them, such a big event. It was quite difficult for all of us to deal with that, also knowing you’ve got a couple more to do.”

For the actor, getting to put Star Wars behind him was exactly what he needed. Then in 2017, he was invited to introduce a film as part of a marathon of every Star Wars film. It was this that essentially reignited his love of the character, so when he was later asked if he would ever return to the role, McGregor’s answer was much different than before. The actor was willing to return, but it wasn’t until Kathleen Kennedy approached him to be sure he truly meant yes that things began to fall into place.

At the time, the plan was to make Obi-Wan Kenobi a feature film which would’ve been directed by Stephen Daldry(Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close). McGregor was on board to not only star in and produce the project, but after the project morphed into a television series for Disney+, Daldry exited the project which then brought Deborah Chow on board. It was important that the series considered whether or not it wanted to bring back characters from the prequels, which eventually resulted in Chow sitting down with Christensen about reprising his role as Anakin Skywalker. Much like McGregor, Christensen hadn’t had the best experience with the prequels, but Chow assured the actor that the series would “would add a new dimension that could ultimately reframe the way fans look at their classic duel in the original movie.”

For Christensen, part of the appeal was getting to explore a new layer to his character. “I was originally hired to play a very specific portion of this person’s life. Most of my work was with Anakin. And now I get to come back and explore the character of Darth Vader.”

Fans will get to see the two characters battle it out once again when Obi-Wan premieres later this month on Disney+.

  • ‘Ahsoka’ Confirmed for 2023 Release

    ‘Ahsoka’ Confirmed for 2023 Release

Production on the Star Wars streaming series Ahsoka has only been underway for a short while and in a very uncharacteristic move by Lucasfilm, we already have confirmation of when we can expect to see it.

In a comprehensive look at Lucasfilm’s Star Wars slate, Vanity Fair revealed that the live-action series, which is being developed by Ahsoka creator Dave Filoni, will stream in 2023. Filoni worked with Jon Favreau to find a way to fit Ahsoka into The Mandalorian in hopes of allowing the character’s amazing arc to continue in her own live-action series. And, according to Filoni, fans who are looking to see the character’s solo series follow up on Ahsoka’s appearances in Season 2 of The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett, which hinted at her continuing her journey from her appearances in the animated series and search for Thrawn, probably won’t be disappointed.

Ahsoka is a continuous story. It is definitely driving toward a goal, in my mind, as opposed to being little singular adventures. That’s what I want the character to be doing, and I think that’s what fans want now. They have such a relationship with her. I’ve only recently started to understand that all those kids that watched Clone Wars are now a lot older—they’re very excited about all the things they grew up with, as they should be.

Unfortunately, with Star Wars’ recent recommitment to secrecy, that’s probably about as much as fans will learn about the plot of the series from any official channels. Despite star Rosario Dawson teasing online that Hayden Christensen would be part of the project’s cast, a move that would pair the wayward Jedi with her master-turned-Sith, Lucasfilm is staying mum on the possibility. The article does, however, confirm that Mary Elizabeth Winstead, who was reportedly added to the cast in January of 2022, will star in Ahsoka alongside Dawson, albeit in an unspecified role.

Despite the intense secrecy surrounding the project, it seems fans of the character have much to look forward to, especially with Filoni continuing on as caretaker of the character.

  • ‘The Mandalorian’ Season 3 May Not Release Until 2023

‘The Mandalorian’ Season 3 May Not Release Until 2023

There’s been a lot of discussion on when we can expect the next season of The Mandalorian. Even its spinoff series stayed true to the December release date, which had many guesses that Season 3 wouldn’t be much different. Yet, it seems that the exact release window isn’t specified as of now and we may not get the series until early 2023. According to Vanity Fair’s new June issue, we got an insight into what the future holds for the Star Wars projects.

The Pedro Pascal-led series that kicked off the TV renaissance for Star Wars is currently uncertain to release either by the end of 2022, but could also potentially find its way to Disney+ early 2023. Given some reported delays during production, it may be the reason for it to potentially get pushed back. The same article also confirms that Ahsoka will follow next year, which is the second The Mandalorian spinoff series currently in development.

No reason was given, but we’re also still waiting for some kind of update on Star Wars: The Bad Batch whose second season was also rumored to premiere this year. So, it may be that they are currently keeping it open depending on how far along some projects are and when is the best time to release them. For now, it’s good we got a least a glimpse and if it does release 2022, it seems very likely to stick to the December release window at this rate.

  • ‘Rogue One’ Prequel ‘Andor’ Confirmed for a Late Summer Release on Disney+

‘Rogue One’ Prequel ‘Andor’ Confirmed for a Late Summer Release on Disney+

The new Vanity Fair piece has been a treasure trove of information on what the future has in store for the Star Wars franchise. Alongside an update on the various films in development for the franchise, which has all seemingly been continued to get pushed back even if Lucasfilm CEO Kathleen Kennedy confirms they have a road map in place. Now, we also got a clear confirmation that the Rogue One prequel series starring Diego Luna, Andor, will arrive later this summer.

The series is described as a “spy saga” and no clear release date is given, but if it is going for a late summer release we might get a hint during Star Wars Celebration later this month. There have been rumors it might release in August, which would fit a late summer release date. though, there has also been the revealed that She-Hulk would find its way to Disney+ on August 17th.

Still, as we’re seeing shorter release windows between projects like Obi-Wan Kenobi and Ms. Marvel, it would seem like they could release it by the end of August. So, it’s great to get a clear indicator for when we can expect the project potentially be released even if the strategy by Lucasfilm and Disney+ has seemingly left much hanging with when their various projects would finally find their way to the service. Still, it looks like this is going to be quite the summer for Star Wars and Marvel fans.

  • ‘The Acolyte’ Takes Place Long Before the Prequel Trilogy

‘The Acolyte’ Takes Place Long Before the Prequel Trilogy

With the Star Wars Celebration on the horizon, a new piece by Vanity Fair has given us a plethora of information on what the future has in store for Star Wars fans, most notably updates on the mysterious The Acolyte Disney+ series. Showrunner Leslye Headland offered a tease of what and when the series will take place.

In the Vanity Fair interview, she reveals that The Acolyte takes place around 100 years before the events of The Phantom Menace. So, it looks like we’re about to enter a new era that hasn’t been explored yet in a live-action adaptation so far.

A lot of those characters haven’t even been born yet. We’re taking a look at the political and personal and spiritual things that came up in a time period that we don’t know much about. My question when watching The Phantom Menace was always like, ‘Well, how did things get to this point?’ How did we get to a point where a Sith lord can infiltrate the Senate and none of the Jedi pick up on it? Like, what went wrong? What are the scenarios that led us to this moment?”

    Leslye Headland

She goes on to highlight the series as a mystery thriller during what seems like a “peaceful era,” which she coins as the “Age of Enlightenment.”

We actually use the term the Renaissance, or the Age of Enlightenment. The Jedi uniforms are gold and white, and it’s almost like they would never get dirty. They would never be out and about. “The idea is that they could have these types of uniforms because that’s how little they’re getting into skirmishes.

    Leslye Headland

It definitely sounds like we’re going to explore an era similar to the High Republic but one that is in the middle of shifting into a new era that has a dark foreboding future for the Jedi.

  • RUMOR: Live-Action ‘Captain Carter’ Project in Development

RUMOR: Live-Action ‘Captain Carter’ Project in Development

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness has given us a plethora of cameos that gave us a window into a different reality where the Avengers never formed but rather the Illuminati. Amongst its members were some heavy hitters from Marvel comics history, such as Black Bolt, Charles Xavier, and Mr. Fantastic. Yet, we also got the return of Captain Carter, a Variant we were first introduced to in What If…? with Haley Atwell returning to the role. While she pretty much headlined the first animated Marvel Studios animated series, it seems she might get a series or film of her own.

As shared in The DisInsider Show‘s Rumor of the Week segment, Derek Cornell has unveiled some details regarding a potential Captain Carter series or film. While they seem to believe heavily in the former, they don’t rule out that a film could also result from her appearance in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Hot off of Doctor Strange 2 and What If…?, we are hearing not for sure if it’s a series, but we’re hearing a Captain Carter live-action series. Series or movie, but something is in the works, live-action will be coming.

    Derek Cornell

If you’re wondering how she would return given she’s only half the woman she was before, it’s very likely they’d revisit the concept in another part of the multiverse. The animated version isn’t the same one we saw in Multiverse of Madness. As such, there are a lot of opportunities to revisit these characters in different versions across the multiverse, even if it might become quite confusing for viewers.

  • Jon Watts Confirmed to be Co-Creating and Directing Post-ROTJ Star Wars Series

Jon Watts Confirmed to be Co-Creating and Directing Post-ROTJ Star Wars Series

This past winter, rumors began to swirl that Jon Watts, who recently served as the director for the MCU-set Spider-Man trilogy, was being lined up to direct a developing Star Wars streaming series. Recently, the pieces started to fall in place when Watts and Marvel Studios parted ways on the Fantastic Four project that Watts had been set to helm. Now, Vanity Fair has revealed that Watts has indeed been brought on board for the Star Wars project, but in a much bigger role than originally expected.

Watts has reunited with Chris Ford, the writer of Spider-Man: Homecoming, to create an original Star Wars streaming series for Disney Plus. The project, code named “Grammar Rodeo”, will be set in The New Republic era, which means it’ll be taking place around the same time as Lucasfilm’s biggest streaming success to date, The Mandalorian. Earlier rumors suggested it might be set during a much earlier time known as The High Repbulic.

The series will reportedly revolve around a very young main cast, with Lucasfilm casting several teen and pre-teen actors. According to Vanity Fair, the series will be a “galactic version of classic Amblin coming-of age-adventure films of the ’80s”, meaning such films as E.T., The Goonies and perhaps even Back to the Future could serve as inspiration for the project. Watts has a great track record working with young actors, so he seems a perfect fit for Lucasfilm’s plans.

Production on the series is rumored to kick off next month, so it’s likely we’ll learn much more about the project soon, perhaps even at Star Wars Celebration, which runs from May 26th-29th.

  • Iman Vellani on How ‘Ms. Marvel’ is a “More Lighthearted” Marvel Studios Series

Iman Vellani on How ‘Ms. Marvel’ is a “More Lighthearted” Marvel Studios Series

When we got the first trailer for Ms. Marvel, it looked like the series was fully embracing its high school aesthetic. Teenagers facing their usual challenges but with the added bonus of Iman Vellani‘s Kamala Khan becoming a superhero and being a Pakistani-American. In a new interview with Zavvi, the young actress highlights their approach and teases a “more lighthearted” Marvel Studios series.

It is John Hughes-esque mixed with Lady Bird and Scott Pilgrim. It’s a lot more lighthearted than the other shows. We showcase that being a teenager is awkward, corny, and weird.

    Iman Vellani

She goes on to highlight that the series is going to be quite self-aware of the fact that it explores the challenges of “growing up” and when the smallest issues feel like the world is falling apart around you.

We are self-aware of how cheesy the show gets sometimes, but when you are growing up everything is so heightened – your emotions, crushes, friendships – it all feels so new. Minor inconveniences also feel like the end of the world.

    Iman Vellani

The Ms. Marvel creative team also wanted to ensure that they are as authentic as possible. To accomplish that very task, they’ve enlisted the help of the cast who are fresh out of high school to bring in their lived experiences of what it’s like being a modern teenager.

The creators and directors have done a great job in working with the cast, asking us to share our experiences and bring ourselves to the characters. It was very collaborative. We are pretty young and just come out of high school, so that made the show as authentic as possible.

    Iman Vellani

It definitely sounds like we’ll fully embrace the high school storytelling in this series, something we’ve gotten a glimpse of in Spider-Man: Homecoming as well. It’ll be interesting to see the difference between these projects as they showcase the different lived experiences of teenagers.

  • Yasmin Finney Joins ‘Doctor Who’ Series 14 as Rose

Yasmin Finney Joins ‘Doctor Who’ Series 14 as Rose

There’s a new Rose aboard the Tardis.

Heartstoppers breakout, Yasmin Finney, is set to play Rose in Series 14 of Doctor Who. She joins the new Doctor, who will be played by Sex Education star Ncuti Gatwa. Also joining the duo are former series stars David Tennant and Catherine Tate. Finney will be one of the first transgender actors to appear in Doctor Who.

If anyone would have told eight-year-old Yasmin that one day she’d be part of this iconic show, I would have never in a million years believed them,” Finney said in a statement to the press.“This show has a place in so many people’s hearts, so to be seen as a trans actress by the legend himself Russell, has not only made my year, it’s made my life.

    Yasmin Finney

Series 14 of Doctor Who will see Russell T. Davies take over as showrunner. Davies, of course, helped to bring the show to modern times when he rebooted the beloved series in 2005 with the episode titled “Rose.” Davies exited the series in 2010 following “The End of Time: Part Two,” which is when Steven Moffat took over. Davies will now take over for Chris Chibnall, who helped bring the world the first female Doctor with Jodie Whittaker.

While it is unknown whether Finney’s character will be a new Rose, or will be a new iteration of the character first portrayed by Billie Piper, Davies doesn’t seem too keen to answer just yet. The showrunner merely teased, “How can there be another Rose?”
