  • Warner Bros. & Sony’s “Only in Theaters” Strategy Facing a Digital Revolution

Warner Bros. & Sony’s “Only in Theaters” Strategy Facing a Digital Revolution

2020 hasn’t been kind to anyone. COVID has made the life of many difficult and halted many prominent industries. The film industry has certainly been hit hard. Not only have all their productions been halted, but they also can’t air any of their finished films. Most tentpole productions have budgets that go beyond the $200 million mark. Every release past March was postponed either until the fourth quarter or even for a full year into 2021. September was the month that everything should change. Cinemas were slowly opening again. Tenet was promised to reignite the Box Office again.

Sadly, it brought in just $20 million and is barely scraping by in the States. We’ve already seen the results of this underperformance. Now, Warner Bros. has postponed Wonder Woman 1984 to December. This is just a week after Dune premieres which would cannibalize their own production. Sony is deciding to wait for COVID to be a thing of the past, which is still unknown. On the other hand, Disney is testing the waters with a brand new Premium Access option on its streaming service. Universal was the one that kickstarted a digital revolution by releasing films on video-on-demand.

    Delaying the Inevitable

It’s more than just a question of time at this point. Even as cinemas open, people will be a bit cautious about returning to a cramped dark space. Even countries that reopened cinemas are now changing direction. Here in Austria, you have to wear a mask as of next month while watching a film. This state-mandated rule will just encourage people to stay home and not take the risk. There is the discussion point at what point can one even consider it to be “safe” to return to cinemas. Sony’s strategy could drag out well into 2021. This could go as far as delay the third Spider-Man‘s December release. Warner Bros. might also go mad by constantly delaying their productions without an end in sight.

Production budgets are borrowed money. The longer they drag out the releases, the more expensive it might become. Most 2020 productions will have to take some loss into account. We won’t be seeing any record-breaking releases anytime soon. In the end, Universal and Disney might be on track for the best strategy right now. Smaller production companies also combined physical and digital releases at this point so they don’t have to market each delay. Marketing budgets would continue to grow as they’d have to rework every trailer. At this point, it is all about cost minimization. Even if 2021 opens up the floodgates, it will be so packed with new productions they will cannibalize each other. There is a good chance, film productions won’t recover until 2022.

    Facing a Digital Future

AMC already had issues with Universal’s strategy by banning them temporarily from cinemas. People criticized Disney+’s pricing for Mulan which was around $30. If you compare it to the $20 rental fee for Bill & Ted Face the Music, it’s surprisingly reasonable. Plus, Disney+ focuses its marketing towards families, so a four-headed family gets off pretty cheap than paying upwards of $40 for tickets. Plus, they can save money by avoiding the concession prices. For some, the price isn’t that bad. Disney might not just be able to cover costs but even turn in a profit. It not only boosts their subscription numbers but also makes up for the Box Office loss it would’ve faced otherwise. We can expect films like Black Widow to be added to Disney+. Warner Bros. and Sony are simply postponing the inevitable. When we were discussing the implications of the WW84 delay, Charles made the good point that Disney might be able to dominate the market. They would be the only company to make their tentpole releases available to everyone without any competition. As such, they don’t have to worry about cannibalization. Even as AMC tries to lawyer up against these strategies, it’s the only option to keep the industry alive. If production companies can’t cover their costs, there won’t be any films to show in empty theatres. Believe me, I would want nothing more than to return to a cinema again but it’s still a massive risk. Right now, Disney and Universal have a better strategy and it wouldn’t be surprising for the others to follow suit. From this perspective, Sony and Warner Bros. are going to face a very rough 2021.

  • ‘WONDER WOMAN 1984’ To Be Delayed Yet Again

‘WONDER WOMAN 1984’ To Be Delayed Yet Again

Warner Bros. is reportedly delaying the much anticipated Wonder Woman sequel one more time. Originally set to hit theaters December 13, 2019, the film will is now being rescheduled for the fifth time. Christopher Nolan’s Tenet served as the studios canary in the coal mine for theatrical releases and while they haven’t publicly expressed disappointment, tentatively moving Wonder Woman 1984 to December 25, 2020 certainly gives us all the insight we need.

The film debuted a well-received new trailer at DC’ FanDome event and has consistently been among movie goers most highly anticipated releases for 2020. Warner Bros. remains intent on giving films like Wonder Woman 1984 and Dune big, theatrical releases rather than distributing them via PVOD, but with the COVID pandemic still very much in play, there’s no telling when we might see these films.

  • Warner Bros. CEO Committed to a Theatrical Release of ‘WONDER WOMAN 1984’

Warner Bros. CEO Committed to a Theatrical Release of ‘WONDER WOMAN 1984’

As studio productions restart and movie theaters start to open around in the world, the chaos of COVID-19 pandemic refuses to yield to the order trying to be reestablished. Today’s news that Robert Pattinson, the star of WB’s The Batman, tested positive just days after production got up and running again served as a stark reminder that while we’re all ready for the virus to go away, it’s not ready to relinquish its hold just yet. WB’s Tenet debuted in theaters last weekend and now, in the first intra-COVID box office battle, Disney’s Mulan will pilot a new strategy of opening in theaters where they’re open and on Disney Plus where they are not. While these two films go to bat, Wonder Woman 1984 is on deck after having shuffled its release date several times. While fans have wondered if the ongoing pandemic would push the sequel into homes given the relatively low number of open theaters. According to WarnerMedia Studios CEO Ann Sarnoff, that’s not going to be the case.

In an interview with THR, Sarnoff indicated that the studio currently has no plans to release the Gal Gadot sequel on PVOD if theaters aren’t widely open ahead of its current October release date. When asked if the film might move to the December slot currently held by Dune if the status quo doesn’t change, Sarnoff had this to say:

We are still figuring out the strategy for all of our movies. We have quite a lot done. Obviously, Wonder Woman 1984 is up next. For now, it is where it is. Like I said earlier, certain movies deserve to be on the big screen. My belief is Wonder Woman is one of those.

And so the studio remains committed to making sure the film, which recently debuted a new trailer at FanDome, gets a wide theatrical release, allowing fans to revel in the full glory of the Patty Jenkins helmed film. • New ‘Wonder Woman 1984’ Poster Teases Trailer at DC FanDome

New ‘Wonder Woman 1984’ Poster Teases Trailer at DC FanDome

We all were wondering how big DC FanDome was going to be that we underestimated how much they’d do to promote it. Rocksteady promoted their upcoming Suicide Squad game. Matt Reeves released the logo for The Batman alongside some key art. WB Games Montreal has been teasing their upcoming game with cryptic tweets. It has been an insane week and DC FanDome is already tomorrow. Now, Warner Bros. has also released a brand new poster for Wonder Woman 1984.

Now that is what I call a beautiful poster. Wonder Woman has really embraced the 80s aesthetic. They also are highlighting that amazing new costume for Wonder Woman that makes me think of Saint Seiya every time I see it. It is also exciting to think we will get a new trailer as well. We still do not know when the film will release with all the delays but WB seems to be sticking to their guns with the “only in Cinemas” tagline. They might be trying to gain some points while Disney is exploring VOD options with Mulan.

Hopefully, the upcoming trailer will give us our first good look at Cheetah. We did get some teases of Kristen Wiig’s Barbara Minerva in the last trailer. Sadly, we are still waiting to see a fully transformed Cheetah in action. It will be interesting to see how her character plays into the story. I’ll be honest, if the trailer is anything to go by I am just really excited to hear the soundtrack they have planned for this film. Cannot wait to explore the DCEU’s 80s in WW84.

  • ‘WONDER WOMAN 1984’ Released Pushed To October

‘WONDER WOMAN 1984’ Released Pushed To October

Warner Bros. sequel to 2017’s successful Wonder Woman has been given another new release date. Due to the uncertainty of fans returning to theaters with the coronavirus pandemic still growing, the film has been pushed back 2 months for an October 2, 2020 debut.

Originally scheduled to be in theaters for December 13, 2019, it was originally moved up 6 weeks to November 1, 2019. Had the shuffling stopped there, fans of comic book films would have had one last hurrah before COVID-19 closed theaters and rearranged film slates; however, Warner Bros., in an effort to open the film as a traditional post-Memorial Day tentpole, moved it to June 5, 2020. With theaters being shut down at that time, WB bumped it to August 14, 2020, hoping that the COVID-19 pandemic would quickly resolve itself. This latest shift (which may not be the final adjustment since a now deleted tweet initially indicated that the film would be in theaters for Thanksgiving) seems to indicate that the studio is growing increasingly concerned about audiences being ready to head to theaters this summer.

The move came in a flurry of activity by the studio as it moved or removed several films on its current slate. Tenet, Witches, Tom & Jerry, Godzilla vs Kong and The Matrix 4 were all a part of the game of musical chairs that seems to have become a Friday night staple during the pandemic. As it stands now, the studio is re-releasing Christopher Nolan’s Inception on July 17th, Tenet’s original date, with an attached preview reel of their upcoming slate. That preview reel could well feature first looks at The Batman or Suicide Squad in addition to any of the films mentioned above.
