Adam Driver Rumored to Have Been Cast as Iconic Marvel Villain in ‘X-Men’ Reboot

The first casting domino of n Marvel Studios X-Men reboot may have fallen.

According to social media’s busiest bee, My Time to Shine Hello, Star Wars franchise star Adam Driver has been cast as Magneto.

In casting a live-action Master of Magnetism for the third time, the studio had its work cut out. Not only is Magneto one of the most complex and sympathetic villains in the House of Ideas vast stable of characters, but the actor would follow in the footsteps of Sir Ian McKellen and Michael Fassbender, both of whom were roundly praised for their performances. If the rumor, which was backed up by Apocalyptic Horseman, is accurate, the studio will have found someone likely to be entirely unphased and capable of putting his own stamp on the character in Driver.

Driver was rumored to be the studio’s top target to play Reed Richards in The Fantastic Four before negotiations ultimately shifted tracks.

In Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Driver’s portrayal of Kylo Ren wasn’t celebrated for its raw physical power, but rather for its deep, volatile sense of abandonment, ideological extremism, and intense psychological conflict. Magneto requires an actor who can balance high-concept supervillainy with the deeply human, tragic trauma of a man who has witnessed the absolute worst atrocities of humanity.

At 42 years old, Driver hits the perfect, long-term age demographic to anchor the reboot’s timeline. It allows Marvel to bypass the chronological headache of explaining how a 90-year-old Holocaust survivor is still physically fighting.
