‘WandaVision’: How Matt Shakman Handled that Big Bohner Twist

WandaVision masterfully played with audiences’ preconceived notions and expectations specifically around the notion of character teases and reveals. Fans were waiting for Blue Marvel, Talos’ daughter, Reed Richards and Mephisto to show up but nothing messed with fans more than Evan Peters. Brought in as a “recast” Pietro, who Agatha called “Fietro”, fans fought tooth and nail over whether or not Peters was Fox’s Quicksilver brought to the MCU through multiversal hijinx or just another stiff from Westview. That was all settled in the finale as Pietro was exposed as Ralph Bohner, a Westview resident who had been powered up by Agatha as a way to take advantage of Wanda’s grief over the loss of her twin.

The Bohner reveal has left some fans feeling pretty raw and has really continued to stick out among the popular topics of conversation even a few days after the show streamed. In an interview with Kevin Smith, WandaVision director Matt Shakman talked about his inspiration for the reveal and how “playing with expectations” is always enjoyable. Shakman mentions how he was inspired to use Bohner by another MCU twist that wasn’t necessarily met with wide-ranging applause: Iron Man 3′s Trevor Slattery/Mandarin twist.

Whether you love him or hate him, you can’t argue that Peter’s Bohner subverted expectations and did so cleverly within the studio’s genre-specific “rules.” Peters “Fietro” got to explore all the “uncle” sitcom tropes and even the character’s name is yet another sitcom reference, this time a nod to a character from the late-80’s/early-90’s sitcom Growing Pains. At the end of the day, he was never going to be more than a side character brought in to drive the story in one very particular direction.

Even though Peters’ appearance in WandaVision was discovered, the studio still handled the Bohner twist delicately, making sure that the surprise wasn’t blown prematurely. It’s understandable that a lot of fans feel like they’ve been jerked around and are still waiting for the other shoe to drop and for Peters to somehow be revealed as Quicksilver; however, it’s pretty clear that this was the reaction that Shakman and the studio were hoping for and they absolutely nailed it. Kevin Feige has often talked about how even though the MCU is based on comics, he doesn’t want to do direct adaptations because fans would know exactly what to expect. As we enter Phase 4, it looks like The-One-Above-All’s philosophy has grown into something bigger and is going to keep us all on our toes moving forward.

New ‘THE FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER’ Character Posters Show Off The Series Big Guns

With Marvel Studios first Disney Plus streaming series, WandaVision, now in the rearview mirror, the studio has turned its attention to promoting its next big event: The Falcon and The Winter Soldier. Set to debut March 19th, the series will explore the legacy of Captain America in a post-Blip world. Marvel has kicked off what we can expect to be a busy couple of weeks of promo and press by releasing new character posters for the series leads.

These characters also happen to be the same ones each getting an episode of Marvel Studios recap series, Legends. While the marketing for the series has understandably revolved around the title characters, we still know little about what exactly Zemo is up to here and even less yet about Sharon Carter’s role. Interesting is the absence of two other characters who will play a major role in the series: John Walker and Karli Morgenthau, aka Flag-Smasher. Perhaps we’ll see more of them over the next couple of weeks leading up to the debut.

The Falcon and The Winter Soldier debuts on Disney Plus on March 19th!

  • Jane Foster Returns in New ‘THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER’ Set Photos

Jane Foster Returns in New ‘THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER’ Set Photos

We’ll all be very sad when filming at Thor’s Little Bay set wraps up but for the time being, we can all continue to enjoy the bounty of set photos from the location. This morning, we have our first look at Natalie Portman’s return to the MCU as Jane Foster!

While most of the photos are pretty non-descript, one seems to indicate we’ll see Jane go airborne in her visit to what we assume to be New Asgard. We know that Jane is set to become the Mighty Thor during the course of the film but we don’t have any details about whether or not Marvel Studios is directly adapting her story arc from the Jason Aaron run or tweaking it to fit the MCU. With that in mind, there are a lot of options as to what could be happening here. Prior set photos seem to indicate, by the presence of his goats, that Thor is in New Asgard around this time, so this could be part of their reunion, perhaps part of some sort of vision she has while in New Asgard or pretty much anything else. We’ll keep an eye out for more set photos over the next few days in hopes of catching a first look at Jane as the Mighty Thor.

Thor: Love and Thunder hits theaters May 6, 2022.

  • REPORT: ‘CAPTAIN MARVEL 2’ Casting Hints at Blue Marvel’s MCU Debut

REPORT: ‘CAPTAIN MARVEL 2’ Casting Hints at Blue Marvel’s MCU Debut

Casting is underway for Captain Marvel 2 and the description of a supporting role in the film may hint towards Dr. Adam Brashear, aka the Blue Marvel, joining the MCU. According to GWW, Marvel Studios is seeking a Black male, 20-30, described as a Michael B. Jordan or John Boyega type, for an unnamed role in the film.

A 'Blue Marvel' Film Could Be The MCU's Platform for High-Concept Sci-Fi - MCUExchange

Blue Marvel was first introduced in a 2008 limited series titled Adam: Legend of the Blue Marvel and though he has been used sparingly over the last decade or so, he did feature prominently in Al Ewing’s Ultimates where he entered into a relationship with Monica Rambeau. While Brashear’s backstory might have to be changed to fit into the current flow of the MCU, his incredible origins and high concept sci-fi stories would be right at home. Time will tell if this is Brashear or not, but fans of his (like me) are keeping our fingers crossed that we’ll get a chance to see him brought to life in the MCU!

Sam Neill Returns as “Odin” in More ‘THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER’ Set Photos

Over the past day, we’ve seen the cast of Asgaridan thespians from Thor: Ragnarok return to the set of Thor: Love and Thunder. Matt Damon and Luke Hemsworth were spotted yesterday reprising their roles as “Loki” and “Thor” in what looks like it will be a recap of the main events of Ragnarok, including the death of Odin. Later, a new round of photos captured Melissa McCarthy on set as “Hela” and now, as expected, Sam Neill has showed up on set as “Odin.”

Damon, Hemsworth and Neill’s “Tragedy of Loki of Asgard” was one of Thor: Ragnarok‘s funniest moments and from the set pics we’ve seen we know that Thor: Love and Thunder is going to give us not only Thor and Loki’s time with Odin before his death but also the final battle of Asgard. We’ll see what director Taika Waititi comes up with this time to help audiences recap the events of Ragnarok.

  • ‘THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER’ Set Photos Reveal the Plot of Film’s Asgardian Play

‘THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER’ Set Photos Reveal the Plot of Film’s Asgardian Play

When it was revealed that Matt Damon was was in Australia as part of the cast of Thor: Love and Thunder, fans were split on whether he would return in his role as an accomplished Asgardian actor portraying Loki or if he might be tackling a meatier role such as Balder the Brave. New set photos today from The Daily Mail have put and end to that speculation.

Previous set photos from Little Bay, Sydney showed the construction what we now know to be an elaborate stage where Damon and Luke Hemsworth will reprise their Thor: Ragnarok roles as Asgardian actors, this time apparently to tell the story of the death of Odin. Given the fact that Sam played “fake Odin” in Ragnarok, it’s possible the actor might also sneak on set to play the Allfather once again.

Thor: Love and Thunder is now in production in Australia and set to hit theaters on May 6, 2022.

  • ‘BLADE’ Set for Late 2021 Start of Production

‘BLADE’ Set for Late 2021 Start of Production

Marvel Studios Mahershala Ali-led Blade reboot is set to begin production later this year. Brandon Davis revealed the news, which I can confirm is accurate, on this weekend’s Phase Zero podcast. With Spider-Man: No Way Home, Ms. Marvel and Hawkeye all wrapping up over the next couple of months and She-Hulk and Black Panther II up next in Atlanta, Blade would have to be a Fall shoot should it film there. And with Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania, Captain Marvel 2 and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 all set for the UK shoots this year, it would seem more likely to be a stateside project than not, though there’s been no official word from the studio.

After a 2020 in which everything on the slate took a hit, it looks like Marvel Studios is making the most of 2021 in anticipation of a HUGE 2022. Blade appeared chronologically slated between July 2022’s Black Panther II and November 2022’s Captain Marvel 2 on Disney’s official Investor Day Fact Sheet back in December. Moving into production later this year indicates not only that Blade is much further along than many fans think but also that it could indeed be ready for theaters for Fall of 2022, perhaps even the October 7, 2022 date that Marvel Studios has yet to abandon despite reshuffling their release slate several times.  Less than a month ago we got the news that Stacy Osei-Kuffour would pen the script for the film so the next logical steps are the announcement of a director and casting for the film’s additional leads and supporting characters ahead of the late-2021 start of production.
