‘WandaVision’, ‘Squid Game’, ‘Cobra Kai’ Nominated For Producers Guild Awards

The nerds continue to rule the Earth, with a litany of their favorite shows gaining more and more awards recognition. A full list of nominees has been released for the upcoming Producers Guild Awards, which are set to be held on March. The list includes multiple fan-favorite projects from the last year, particularly within the realm of episodic television.

For starters, Marvel Studios’ flagship Disney+ series WandaVision received a nomination in the ‘Limited and Anthology’ category, alongside critically acclaimed shows like Dopesick, The Underground Railroad, and The White Lotus.

Surprise worldwide phenomenon Squid Game was nominated for the Danny Thomas Award for Outstanding Producer of Episodic Television, as was fellow underdog Netflix sensation Cobra Kai. They join the likes of HBO’s Succession, AppleTV+’s Ted Lasso, and Paramount’s Yellowstone in contention for the honor. On the film side of things, Denis Villenueve‘s Dune managed to snag a nomination for the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures.

Noticeably missing from the list of nominees is Marvel and Sony’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, which is currently tearing through the box office at record speeds. The film has been campaigning for major recognition during the awards season, and it remains to be seen if it will get any when the Oscars finally come around. Until then, fans of high sci-fi and comic book adaptations can breathe easy knowing Hollywood may finally be giving them the nods they’ve always deserved.

  • Ron Perlman Still Wants ‘Hellboy 3’ To Happen

Ron Perlman Still Wants ‘Hellboy 3’ To Happen

It has been nearly fourteen years since the release of Guillermo del Toro‘s last Hellboy movie, The Golden Army. In that time, several attempts have been made to continue the franchise with a third installment, but nothing has ever panned out. The series was eventually rebooted in 2019 with Neil Marshall‘s Hellboy, which was far less well-received and seemingly brought the idea of more live-action films to a sudden halt. Despite all of this, and maybe against his own better judgement, del Toro’s former leading man Ron Perlman is remaining all-in on the idea of a Hellboy 3.

In a recent interview with Variety, the Sons of Anarchy star spoke about the potential of returning for another Hellboy project. While he admits he may have aged out of the role, he still thinks a third del Toro film is possible, and he very much still wants it to happen.

Am I eager to do Hellboy 3? No, I’m 71 f—g years old. [But] we owe this to the fans, and we should give it to them because it would be an epic conclusion. So Guillermo, if you’re reading, I’m not done pounding you to get this f—g thing done.

    Ron Perlman

If Lionsgate were to bite, it wouldn’t be the first time a franchise returned to it’s original creatives after a failed reboot attempt. Ghostbusters recently tried the same maneuver, with mixed results. However, an “Old Man Hellboy” story may have a better shot at success. David Harbour, who took over the title role from Perlman, has publicly stated his belief that the remake was received poorly because it could never live up to del Toro’s version of the character in audiences’ minds. While the acclaimed director may not be able to make a new Hellboy anytime soon, perhaps the pure fan loyalty will someday help a new project get off the ground.

  • New ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ Concept Art Features the Return of Mysterio

New ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ Concept Art Features the Return of Mysterio

Despite a global pandemic that has prevented many films from finding financial footing, Spider-Man: No Way Home is still going strong in movie theaters across the nation. Much of this success is due to the excitement of moviegoers over the comeback of multiple characters fans thought to be long dead or past the point of return. While a fair share of SpiderMan characters returned, one of the few past Spider-Man villains who wasn’t included in this roster was Jake Gyllenhaal‘s Mysterio, a master illusionist and the main antagonist of 2019’s Spider-Man: Far From Home. It would now appear, however, that the rogue wasn’t always going to be excluded from the latest smash-hit superhero film.

A brand new piece of concept art has been making the rounds on social media, depicting the supposedly deceased villain doing battle with Benedict Cumberbatch‘s Doctor Strange above the Statue of Liberty.

    https://twitter.com/GeekVibesNews/status/1486045873612247055?s=20

This is, of course, where the climactic final battle of the film took place. This would insinuate that there was at one point an idea to bring Mysterio back alongside the other bad guys to cause his specific brand of trouble. It’s likely this was a very early thought, and abandoned long ago. Still, it’s interesting to think what might have come of his return. One would think Strange would immediately wipe the floor with someone who isn’t capable of actual magic, but it’s possible this version of Mysterio could have been from one of the many open alternate universes featured in the movie. Perhaps this Quentin Beck was able to cast real spells of his own. Unfortunately, it’s more than likely fans will never know for sure.

  • Sam Raimi Reveals Status of ‘Doctor Strange’s Production and What It’s Like to Work With Marvel Studios

Sam Raimi Reveals Status of ‘Doctor Strange’s Production and What It’s Like to Work With Marvel Studios

The man who helped begin the superhero movie craze is back, and he’s ready to talk about working with the machine keeping his trend alive. In a recent interview with Variety, acclaimed director Sam Raimi discussed the current status of the latest Marvel project and what it was like to develop a film alongside Kevin Feige and the folks at Marvel Studios. The filmmaker has been hard at work on the highly-anticipated sequel Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness for a long time now, and had this to say when asked if filming was yet to be completed:

I wish I knew the answer to that question. I think we’re done, but we just cut everything. We’re just starting to test the picture and we’ll find out if there’s anything that’s got to be picked up. If something’s unclear or another improvement I can make in this short amount of time left, I’ll do it. One thing I know about the Marvel team is they won’t stop. They’ll keep pushing it until it’s as close to being great as it could be.

    Sam Raimi

He continued to put an emphasis on just how great his experience with the cultural juggernaut has been:

Marvel’s been a great team to work with. I think that was a not-surprising surprise. I’ve been super-supported by the whole Marvel operations, starting at the top with Kevin Feige, and working all the way down to the crews that they work with. [They’re] super professional and have supported me every step of the way.

    Sam Raimi

These comments should be thrilling for fans who were afraid Raimi, noted for his signature style, would be creatively stifled by Marvel. His last outing with a comic book hero, 2007’s Spider-Man 3, was famously affected by studio mandates and interference. Here’s hoping the future is brighter for the fan-favorite maestro.

  • All-New ‘Daredevil #1’ Coming From Chip Zdarsky and Marco Checchetto

All-New ‘Daredevil #1’ Coming From Chip Zdarsky and Marco Checchetto

The Man Without Fear will return for another groundbreaking first issue this summer, and his future is set to be mapped out by a few familiar faces. Chip Zdarsky, a popular writer, and Marco Checchetto, a talented artist, are back as the creative forces behind everyone’s favorite blind vigilante. The duo previously launched an acclaimed run on the character in 2019, which recently concluded with the shocking events of the Devil’s Reign story arc. Over the course of their last outing, Zdarsky and Checchetto introduced readers to the idea of iconic femme fatale Elektra Natchios taking over the mantle of Daredevil from Matt Murdock. It looks as though their new series will give the horned mask back to Murdock, but the pair promise it will also treat readers to the next chapter in Elektra’s story while ushering in the darkest era of Hell’s Kitchen yet.

Zdarsky and Checchetto both released statements regarding the news, highlighting just how excited the team is to get back to work on a new Daredevil #1. The writer exclaimed:

Getting to write Daredevil and work with Marco is a career highlight. I’m just genuinely excited that we get to continue our epic story with this new issue one! Matt and Elektra have confronted their past mistakes with DEVIL’S REIGN and WOMAN WITHOUT FEAR, but can they atone for them together? This is the start of our fourth year on the title! And the plan for it is about as big a swing as we could possibly take. I’m super excited for readers to see where we’re taking our Daredevils!

    Chip Zdarsky

Checchetto added a little self-awareness to the moment, commenting on the irregularity of the same team working on a second first issue and their aim towards continued darkness:

It’s the first time that I’ve to draw the first issue of the same series twice. I could tell you it’s an issue like everyone else, now, but it’s not. Each time I’ve to draw a new script of Daredevil it’s a new experience. Chip keeps throwing at me new challenges and I’m not the type of artist to refuse them. How much more can we mess up with Matt Murdock’s life? Let’s see with this new DAREDEVIL #1.

  • Disney Lost ‘Children of Blood and Bone’ Due to Creative Differences With Author

Disney Lost ‘Children of Blood and Bone’ Due to Creative Differences With Author

Not long ago, it was announced that the hit young adult novel series Children of Blood and Bone would receive the movie treatment from Paramount Pictures. The news was wildly exciting for fans of the books, written by author Tomi Adeyemi. Yet, it was also a little confusing for anyone who remembered the 2020 Disney Investors Day panel that announced Lucasfilm would be adapting the franchise as their first non-Star Wars project in years. Luckily for the flabbergasted majority, an exclusive report from Borys Kit at The Hollywood Reporter is finally shedding some light on the matter.

There was a point in time when Kathleen Kennedy and the folks as Lucasfilm were keen to adapt Blood and Bone with Rick Famuyiwa attached to direct. However, this was before the wild success of the company’s Star Wars-based projects on Disney+. According to THR, the studio’s focus on shows like The Mandalorian forced Blood and Bone to the back burner, and series creator Adeyemi took issue with the slow pace of the project’s development. The writer also wanted more creative control, pushing to write the film’s script herself, and Lucasfilm was unwilling to comply.

As a result of the conflict, Lucasfilm decided to let its ownership of the story’s film rights run out and part ways with Adeyemi. Paramount won the rights after a long bidding war, and Lucasfilm has now committed to focusing on films and shows that relate to its established IP as opposed to developing new concepts. Time will tell how this move plays out for both parties, but it seems to be working out in their favor at the moment. Also, fans now have one less mystery to solve on their own.

  • REVIEW: ‘The Legend of Vox Machina’ Is Raunchy, Violent, Fantasy Fun

REVIEW: ‘The Legend of Vox Machina’ Is Raunchy, Violent, Fantasy Fun

The world of animation is home to a rather wide variety of genres, and most of them are designed to cater to a very specific audience. Those with a flair for the theatrical tend to love an action-packed anime, filled with an ample amount of drama and enough fast-paced violence to make a vampire blush. Escapists will frequently stray towards fantasy epics, which transport them away from the realities of life and towards a more magical land of adventure. Late-night crowds love adult comedies, which typically go to great lengths to make their raunchiest jokes an auditory and visual experience. Pleasing an audience is no easy task, so it’s impressive when a show can hit the mark on any one of these concepts. It’s even more impressive when it succeeds in hitting on all three.

The Legend of Vox Machina is Amazon Prime’s latest animated offering, based on a long-running Dungeons & Dragons campaign played by some of the industry’s most talented vocal performers. The group, who initially presented their journey in the form of a web series called Critical Role, all return to voice their respective characters in a new adaptation that entertainingly balances the earnestness of good storytelling with the jolly aura of nerds just messing around. Though the humor may sometimes be a bit on the nose, its honest bluntness makes it hard not to laugh. For example, when one of our protagonists is confronted by a monstrous demon beast, he appropriately exclaims something along the lines of ‘What in the actual [insert expletive] is that!?’ This, being probably exactly what the viewer was also thinking, makes for a good reminder that the majority of the show’s jokes stem from someone sitting at a table and reacting to plot twists with as much humanity as any viewer.

As hinted above, however, it’s not just the R-rated comedic material that makes Vox Machina so charming to watch. Jokes hit harder when an audience is engrossed in the plot, and more so when the characters involved are actually made to be interesting. Throughout the series’ first six episodes, those ready to observe will be introduced to a seemingly expansive world of magic and monsters (or rather, dungeons and dragons). None of the concepts presented are especially new or groundbreaking, but a handful of genuinely fun-to-watch sequences and the sporadically very cool character design will surely be quick to convince viewers of their right to exist. The exaggerated nature of animation, paired with the occasionally brutal nature of fantasy, serves to make the action scenes sometimes shockingly violent. It’s most definitely not a show for children, and some moments may even be too grotesque for grown adults, but fans of a satisfyingly choreographed fatality should be pleased by what the series has to offer.

The likability of the story’s titular band of misfits also helps to keep a potential fandom wanting more, whether it be to see further evidence of the easy chemistry between actors or simply because they’ll want to know what happens to their sort-of-heroes next. By the tradition of role-playing games, all protagonists are a bit of a stereotype. Yet, the dualistic authenticity with which each is portrayed in Vox Machina helps to inject a certain amount of lifeblood into the plot. Travis Willingham‘s Grog Strongjaw is your typical meathead barbarian, but the actor delves into the role with enough heart to make him one of the team’s softest members. Laura Bailey‘s half-elf ranger Vex Vessar is as independent as they come, and Sam Reigel‘s Scanlan Shorthalt is a musical gnome with a penchant for sex and self-obsession, yet somehow both keep finding themselves in danger for someone they care about. Some of the more prominent character developments can’t be discussed without giving away some really intriguing spoilers, but suffice to say the rest of the cast has a lot of fun as well. Especially when the story deviates from the expected.

Ironically, a final bright spot worth mentioning is just how gleefully dark the series can get. With old-fashioned villains who are bad for the sake of being bad and cherish the idea of causing others pain, it sometimes feels like nothing is off the table. Despite a generally jovial tone, any show with evil books, giant wolves, and mustache-twirling bad guys is sure to make it to some scary places. What’s surprising is just how willing Vox Machina is to embrace the chaos.

While every minute spent watching The Legend of Vox Machina was thoroughly enjoyable, it does seem like the series is meant to flourish with a very specific niche. Those who love the original web series will flock to this new take, and they’ll more than likely fall for it quicker than most. However, anyone unfamiliar with the source material should prepare themselves for a ride that pulls out quite a few stops. If you’re expecting a straightforward show that commits to any one style, you might want to look elsewhere. If you’re willing to let yourself be open to anything, then you just might find yourself a new favorite adventure on Amazon Prime.

  • Marvel Comics Reveals New Comics For Steve Rogers and Sam Wilson

Marvel Comics Reveals New Comics For Steve Rogers and Sam Wilson

Marvel Comics has a long history of mantles and legacy characters. In 2014, former Falcon Sam Wilson joined this tradition after taking up the title of Captain America for a then-decommissioned Steve Rogers. The move was a big deal for fans and creators alike, but as is often the case with comics, it wasn’t permanent. Steve Rogers eventually returned to his iconic role, and Sam Wilson’s future was left in a state of limbo. Now, however, Marvel has announced that it will allow both character to maintain the identity moving forward.

Two new comics, Captain America: Symbol of Truth and Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty, will follow the adventures of both men as they navigate what it means to be a hero in modern times. Symbol of Truth will arrive first, in May, and will be written by Tochi Onyebuchi with art from R.B. Silva. The series is set to center around Wilson as the “public-facing” Captain America, or “the one people think of as holding that title.” The story will see the air-born Cap trying to untangle America’s messy, and sometimes shady, foreign policy.

Onyebuchi confirmed the plot is based heavily on action thrillers, with Sam finding himself in the middle of a government conspiracy. Highlighting the “truth” aspect of the title, he continues:

We’ve seen Sam Wilson deal with the legacy of Captain America and race in very inward terms with regards to America: What does it mean for America to accept a Black Captain America? One of the things I’m teasing in my book is, what does it mean for the rest of the world to accept a Black Captain America? That’s another part of the equation. If Captain America is in many ways a mimesis of America, with all the good and bad pathologies, what does that mean for the way in which America interacts with the rest of the world?

    Tochi Onyebuchi

Meanwhile, Sentinel of Liberty hits shelves in June. That comic, written by Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing with art by Carmen Carnero, will focus on Rogers and his quest to figure out who he really is. While Sam acts as the main event, Steve will take time to determine how he fits into the world and the impact of his legacy. Lanzing explains:

In our book, he is going to be really looking at what it means to be Steve Rogers. We’ll see what it means when he finds a threat that truly needs his version of Captain America, and what he has to step up to become that. What does Captain America mean to Steve beyond being the leader of the Avengers and answering to the government? Since he feels he’s handed that off. So what is Steve building? What is he organizing? What do his friends need from him specifically? What does Bucky need from him?

    Jackson Lanzing

The new books will be preceded by Captain America #0, co-written by Kelly, Lanzing, and Onyebuchi with art from Mattia De Lulis.

Netflix Developing New Animated Comedy ‘Bad Crimes’, Nicole Byer and Lauren Lapkus to Star

Netflix is bringing in some powerhouse talent for its latest foray into animated comedy. The popular streaming service has ordered a new series titled Bad Crimes from television veterans Greg Daniels, Mike Judge, and Nicole Silverberg. The show, which will star Netflix mainstays Nicole Byer and Lauren Lapkus in the lead roles, will center around the misadventures of two FBI agents who travel across the country to solve grisly murders while juggling their friendship, career ambitions, and a host of romantic suitors.

Bad Crimes will serve as the latest in a long line of successful collaborations from Daniels and Judge, who previously co-created the hit comedy King of the Hill for Fox. This is also not the first time Byer and Lapkus have worked side-by-side, as the pair currently host a podcast together called Newcomers. Every name involved with this project comes backed by an impressive resume.

Aside from the previously mentioned King of the Hill, Daniels is known for developing cultural phenomena on NBC with The Office and Parks & Recreation. Judge is a legend in his own right, having created both Beavis and Butt-Head for MTV and Silicon Valley for HBO and directing the cult favorite comedy film Office Space in 1999. Silverberg is a promising new writer on the scene, fresh off her work on TBS’ Full Frontal with Samantha Bee. As for the voice acting talent, Byer is perhaps most well-known for her hosting gig on Netflix’s Nailed It! while Lapkus gained notoriety for her long-running role on the service’s hit series Orange is the New Black.
