‘Nobody’ Producer Confirms Sequel, Bob Odenkirk Set to Return

Films based on assassins are all the rage these days, with then success of John Wick spawning many more copycats. One in particular hit theaters last year, starring Saul Goodman himself, Bob Odenkirk, who played a retired intelligence agency hitman who’d been brought back into action after a home invasion; sounds a bit familiar. The film was quite the hit, garnering positive critical reaction and grossing over $50 million at the worldwide box office on a shoestring $16M budget. It seems to have been enough to warrant a sequel as the film’s producers confirmed a sequel is in development.

David Leitch recently sat down with Collider while promoting his upcoming action film Bullet Train, where he confirmed that a Nobody sequel is in the writing stages and they’ll be working on the project as fast as they can. Leitch went into detail about just how much people loved working on the first one, and that it meant a lot to everyone involved.

Oh, I think everyone’s really excited about it, Everyone involved is like, ‘Full steam ahead.’ We are in the script process, and I think we had so much fun making that. Kelly and I had a blast, the actors had a blast, the studio loved the results, and it’s happening. I mean, I think it’s happening as fast as we can make it happen.

    David Leitch

Leitch went spoke more on the sequel to cast aside doubts that the project wouldn’t happen, explaining that they’re excited to get working on it with Odenkirk.

Yes, I do. I do, because there are these certain journeys that you go on, and they’re just undeniable experiences for the people involved. And that was one of them. And I think all of us want to go back and play in that universe, and we want to see Bob bring that character to life again.

    David Leitch

With Better Call Saul set to wrap up its sixth season in the next few weeks, Odenkirk is going to have a whole lot more time on his hand to explore new projects, with one of those hopefully being the Nobody sequel.

REPORT: Fox Contracts Delaying the X-Men’s MCU Introduction

In 2019, Disney officially completed its acquisition and merger with 20th Century Fox, one of the biggest such mergers in entertainment history. What many fans focused on, however, was the idea that Marvel Studios gained the live-action rights to many beloved characters from the Marvel universe, such as the X-Men and The Fantastic Four. Three years removed from the excitement, we’ve yet to really see much happen aside from X-Men ’97 being made, Deadpool 3 being green lit and Kamala Khan retconned as the MCU’s first mutant and it seems there may be a reason behind that.

In a recent podcast at his Patreon, CInema Sangha, journalist Devin Faraci shared some information about the situation behind the scenes with the delayed introduction of the mutants in the MCU.

Despite the introduction of mutants at the end of Ms. Marvel, there’s no mutants in Phase 5. I know why. I know why there’s no mutants. I know why this is going to take a while. There might be individual mutants, there might be other characters that show a certain interest. The reason why is the contractual situation with the original Fox stuff is going to be in effect until 2025. So, if they don’t want to use those actors, then they have to wait until that contract all expires.

    Devin Faraci

It seems like fans are gonna have to wait a while to see quite a few of the big names that they’re looking forward to seeing pop up in the MCU. The problem seems to be that some of the talent brought on by Fox have contracts that are still in effect and carried over following the acquisition of 20th Century. These actors cannot be recast until the contract concludes in 2025. This will most likely result in an X-Men likely not coming till 2026 once Phase 7 begins.

If they’re going to have stuff hitting in 2025 at the end of the contract, then they’ll announce it. But I think they actually can’t go into production until the contract’s up. So it’s not even a release – it’s the same thing with Superman. So they’re going to be Phase 7. So you’re not going to see mutants until Phase 7. There are going to be mutants that will show up after the Multiverse Saga is over.

    Devin Faraci

The Illuminerdi was able to back up this claim, saying that their own sources reported that Marvel Studios is holding off on the X-Men due to talent and producers still being contractually attached to anything regarding that group of characters. Feige and company obviously would like to move in a different direction with these characters following the films produced by Fox, and would like a fresh slate to revamp many that may have been mischaracterized and underutilized in the Fox era.

For now, fans will just have to wait for X-Men ’97 to hit Disney+ next year to get their mutant fill.

  • SDCC: Chris Pratt on Star Lord and Gamora in ‘Guardians of The Galaxy Vol. 3’

SDCC: Chris Pratt on Star Lord and Gamora in ‘Guardians of The Galaxy Vol. 3’

One of the biggest mysteries revolving around Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was the status of Gamora, who’d been missing since Avengers: Endgame. Of course, we know what happened to our Gamora in Avengers: Infinity War but the past version that remained in the present day has just vanished into thin air.

The trailer shown to those in Hall H during the Marvel Studios panel revealed that Gamora is alive and well, only she’s working with the Ravagers now. Not just that, she’s even leading them. Variety was able to catch up with Chris Pratt who talked about Star-Lord and Gamora’s now complicated relationship and how Quill is dealing with the love of his life no longer feeling the same towards him.

Well Quill is obviously devastated, the love of his life, Gamora, does not know who he is, its just shes a different person then he came to know and love and hes reeling about that, he just dealing with the emotion of that and in denial and kinda not really capable of functioning well and thats what, thats where we find him and hes coping with that through the course of this film and leaves the guardians vulnerable and he spends the rest, you know, most of the movie trying to make up for his lack of presence and good frame of mind because of the emotional sort of state hes in.

  • Kathryn Newton on Where We Find Cassie Lang in ‘Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania’

Kathryn Newton on Where We Find Cassie Lang in ‘Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania’

Of the many Marvel Studios projects presented during Saturday’s Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic-Con, Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania was one to make quite the impression, giving those in attendance their first look at Jonathon Majors as Kang the Conqueror. Alongside Kang, however, was the first look at Kathryn Newton as Cassie Lang, making her Marvel Cinematic Universe debut.

The first footage shown to attendees in Hall H revealed that Newton’s Cassie Lang isn’t in the Quantum Realm. She’s actually in Jail. Of course, not much context was given as the film isn’t out until next year. But Newton did comment on the scene when Variety caught up with her after the panel.

She was in jail, I can’t believe that they showed that. I love that that was the intro to Cassie, first of all, that experience was so fun for me. I couldn’t even see anybody but I could feel everybody there, I could feel you all out there and I hoped you liked Cassie Lang a little bit, the little bit that you saw. Yeah, she’s in jail, she’s not up to no good, she’s up to good, okay.

    Kathryn Newton

Ahead of the Marvel Studios Hall H presentation, we got our first look at Cassie Lang suited up alongside her father and Hope Van Dyne, all sporting new outfits in what looked to be a Quantum Realm-esque background with our first look at Jonathan Majors as Kang the Conqueror looming over.

  • SDCC: Tenoch Huerta on Wearing Namor’s Iconic Speedo

SDCC: Tenoch Huerta on Wearing Namor’s Iconic Speedo

For a while now we’ve known that Tenoch Huerta would be joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and while it was never official, we knew he’d be playing the Atlantean king, Namor the Submariner. Given that the character has always been on the goofier side, sporting a strong widow’s peak, a green speedo, and ankle wings, many had wondered just how it would translate into live action.

It’s safe to say, however, that the costume department on the Black Panther sequel knocked it out of the park bringing the submariner to life, and even Huerta himself shared his excitement about being able to wear the iconic but modernized look.

“It’s amazing. You know, everybody pretends to be a superhero or to be part of these movies or whatever, and then you are a part of it, and then you are the superhero, and then you are wearing the costume, and it’s your skin, your voice your talent, your story. It’s overwhelming.”

    Tenoch Huerta

Fans can catch glimpses of Namor in the trailer for the film, sporting a few different looks. Of course, his most prevalent one is the green Speedo look, but for the film, Namor has been given an upgrade and can be seen sporting golden bands with Mayan designs and jade jewelry with all this color and the characters design just has so much more life to it, they took a rather simple look and gave him an actual identity and elevated it to a whole new level.

SDCC: James Gunn on Saying Goodbye to ‘Guardians of The Galaxy’

Those in attendance at Hall H were treated to quite the surprise when James Gunn popped up with the cast of Guardians of The Galaxy Vol. 3, where they debuted the first footage of the upcoming film. Reactions to said footage were reportedly quite emotional, as the footage included a young Rocket Raccoon, the return of Gamora, and the reveal of the High Evolutionary.

We’ve known for quite some time that Gunn would be wrapping up this iteration of the Guardians of The Galaxy, a team he brought into the spotlight back in 2014, and following the panel, he briefly discussed what it was like saying to conclude their story. Variety caught up with Gunn following Marvel Studios’ big Hall H panel and talked about how hard it was to say goodbye to something he’d been a part of for so long.

“I really like sorta blocked myself off to it till the last day and Chris Pratt gave a very emotional speech and I got teary-eyed, he had prepared it, it was really funny. He was reading off all of the people, he went back, and he looked at all the people that said the first movie was gonna be a huge bomb, and all the people that said a bunch of negative stuff about how bad the movie was fail and read all the stuff and went into a bunch of stuff about how much we all love each other.”

    James Gunn

Gunn continued on to talk about another speech given by a veteran Guardians of The Galaxy cast member, Zoe Saldana.

“Zoe Saldana gave a speech that just crushed me and like I just lost it, like I really cried, you know? And I’m a big tear guy, not a cry guy, a tear guy. You know, I get the little tears, I’m sitting with my fiance and we’re watching some movie and I get teary-eyed, all the time, real easy with the tears, not easy with the cry, and I cried, it was really beautiful.”

  • SDCC: ‘Blade’ Officially Starting Production in October

SDCC: ‘Blade’ Officially Starting Production in October

We got shockingly little information on Blade at Marvel Studios’ presentation in Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con. We saw it listed on the Phase 5 slate, where it was officially given a November 3rd, 2023 release date, but any sort of casting announcement was absent from the presentation. The bright side is that we have a confirmed start window for production on the film thanks to a press release from Disney following the panel.

Disney has confirmed that Blade will indeed begin shooting this fall, officially starting production in October of this year. The film was originally believed to begin filming sometime this summer, but seems to have hit some sort of delay resulting in a fall start date now.

“BLADE,” which begins shooting this October and opens in theaters Nov. 3, 2023.”

    Disney

We can definitely assume that Marvel Studios will feature the film much more come September when the D23 convention rolls around and we have a whole bunch of new announcements from the house of mouse. While little remains known about the film, the cast has begun to grow quite a bit in the past few months, as Marvel Studios prepares to bring the Daywalker into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The cast for Blade includes Academy Award winning actor Mahershala Ali, Delroy Lindo, and Aaron Pierre, with Milan Ray also reportedly joining the cast. Plot details for the film are still currently under wraps along with the roles for Lindo, Pierre, and Ray who have yet to be officially announced by Marvel Studios.

SDCC: Jonathan Majors on Seeing His Kang Performance in ‘Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania’

At the tail end of Loki, the curtain was thrown back and audiences were introduced to He Who Remains. Played by Jonathan Majors, he’s a variant of the threat that has yet to come, Kang the Conquerer. The character is set to make his Marvel Cinematic debut in the upcoming sequel to Ant-Man and The Wasp as the main threat, and will seemingly return in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars, but lets not get ahead of ourselves there.

Those lucky enough to be in attendance at Marvel Studios Hall H panel were able to catch a first look at Majors in action and Variety was able to chat with the actor and ask him how he felt to be playing the next big bad in the MCU.

It was surreal, it was so surreal actually that as we were, as I was backstage watching the clip, I was listening to the voice and the words and I went “I know that, but where is that coming” and then I went “Oh thats him! thats him, thats Kang” you know thats how surreal its been, and then I was just over there when my friend and publicist showed me the Kang Dynasty beat and that was wild, so im still, I apologize because im just so afloaty.”

    Jonathan Majors

Just before the panel we were given an early look at Kang via artwork by Andy Park with the first poster for Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania showing us Scott, Hope, and Cassie in a quantum realm-esque habitat with the conquerer himself looming over the trio.

  • SDCC: Danai Gurira on Making ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ Without Chadwick Boseman

SDCC: Danai Gurira on Making ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ Without Chadwick Boseman

The world was dealt a terrible loss when news broke that Chadwick Boseman had passed away, just when his career had really begun to take off and he’d become this inspiration to so many people around the world. Boseman reached new heights with the role of T’Challa, a character who’d become incredibly important to a whole lot of people in a very short amount of time, as one of the first Black characters to get their own solo film within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Developing the sequel was always going to be difficult for everyone involved, especially those who’d worked closest to him like actress Danai Gurira, who plays Okoye in the MCU. Variety caught up with Gurira after the Marvel Studios Hall H panel and asked her about her experience making the film.

I mean it was very, it was everything really, we didn’t know when and how it was gonna hit us, it hit us various ways and various moments, sometimes just walking onto the stage and hearing Ryan [Coogler] talk before that, we were getting hit, watching it, there are various moments where your just being hit by that and I think it was beautifully said by Dominique [Thorne] and by Micaela [Coel] that they really were support for us, there was a very hard day I had on set and she [Dominique] was there for me and you know you just never knew when it was just gonna be a really hard day and so they were really amazing, our new family, they understood they were in a place where grief was happening and they really really, they held us up.

  • SDCC: Viola Davis Returning as Amanda Waller For ‘Black Adam’

SDCC: Viola Davis Returning as Amanda Waller For ‘Black Adam’

Black Adam made a thunderous appearance in Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con with Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson and the rest of the cast coming along to tease the man in black’s big debut later this year. To end the panel, the cast shared a brief new look at the film, with the footage revealing a familiar face to DC fans.

San Diego Comic Con footage for Black Adam confirmed the return of Viola Davis as Amanda Waller. It is currently unknown how big her role is within the film, but we do know that she will indeed be returning. It was previously reported the Jennifer Holland would also be returning in the film as Emilia Harcourt. That, of course, remains to be seen.

This just begs the question as to when Black Adam is set within the DC Extended Universe timeline as the end of Peacemaker would make for an odd situation in the film between Harcourt and Waller.

For now, fans can enjoy the new trailer for Black Adam and check it out when it hits theaters this October.
