    SLAMDANCE REVIEW: ‘Just Right’

Making a film isn’t an easy task. Trying to fit a tightly wound story within a limited timeframe is difficult even when the project is two hours long. But making a short film that tells a complete story? Well, that’s even more difficult. Just Right manages to successfully tell a story about visible and non-visible disabilities within its fifteen-minute timeframe.

Camille Wormser, who wrote and directed Just Right, stars as a woman named Mel who suffers from severe obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). She’s grown accustomed to spending her life at home, unwilling to travel outside the safety of her front door. However, one morning, she decides she wants to do something different and seeks to join her friends as they go out for the day to a friend gathering that involves indoor skiing. At first, Mel seems disinterested, but she soon decides to give it a go.

After going through her daily routines, including trying out each seat in the living room, Mel sets out on her own in search of a latte. She ends up at a place called Cookie Good, where it’s evident she’s uncomfortable and eager to disappear behind others. When another customer comes in, she tries to have them go first, but they insist she proceed, which leads to a difficult conversation between Mel and the person at the counter. It soon becomes clear that Mel is uncomfortable making eye contact with new people and that she’s not good with ordering things on her own. It’s a very, very well-done scene that depicts some of the invisible handicaps people live with on a daily basis and the negative way the public tends to react to people that are “different.”

Upon receiving her drink, Mel sets out to meet up with her friends, Kyle (Jake Dvorsky) and Rene (Adam Turney), but soon realizes she’s running behind. Growing frantic, Mel ends up stopping to perform some of her daily rituals before sprinting off in search of her friends again. When she finally catches up to them, her entire demeanor changes. You can see the anxiety and uncertainty wash away as she becomes more comfortable within their presence. While some audience members might grow frustrated by the ending – or lack thereof – the way Wormser chooses to end the film is, well, Just Right.

We get to see Mel go through the ringer. From her excitement to her panic, to her calming sense of achievement. It’s a rollercoaster ride, one that can be uncomfortable and hard to watch, but is so important to see displayed on screen because of its accuracy.

  • Stephen King Adaptation ‘The Boogeyman’ Getting Theatrical Release

Stephen King Adaptation ‘The Boogeyman’ Getting Theatrical Release

In a surprising move, The Boogeyman is now moving from streaming to theaters. The news was announced by The Hollywood Reporter on Friday. Per the outlet, The Boogeyman, which is an adaptation of a short story by Stephen King, will no longer debut exclusively on Hulu. Instead, it will go directly to theaters on June 3rd.

The decision comes after the film, which was directed by Rob Savage, had a strong test screening in December. Executives and producers seemed excited by the response and quickly decided to re-evaluate their plans for the project. They also got approval from King after showing the film to him. The movie was reportedly made for just $17 million and executives are hopeful that the film will perform like other low-budget horror titles, namely Smile, which was also originally set to be a streaming exclusive for Paramount+ before moving to theaters. That film went on to make $216 million at the worldwide box office.

The Boogeyman is based on a story that was included in King’s 1978 horror anthology, Night Shift. Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, who penned A Quiet Place, wrote the screenplay for Savage. The film stars Chris Messina, Sophie Thatcher, Vivien Lyra Blair, David Dastmalchian, Marin Ireland, and Madison Hu.

Comic book writers Matt Fraction and Kelly Sue DeConnick have signed a new overall deal with Amazon’s Prime Video. The news comes courtesy of Above the Line, with the outlet revealing that, as part of the deal, both Sex Criminals and Bitch Planet are being developed for television.

Sex Criminals, which is written by Fraction with artwork by Chip Zdarsky, was first published in September 2013. The series, which centers on Suzie and Jon, two characters who have the ability to stop time when they orgasm. After realizing that they both share the same ability, the two go on to use it to their advantage by robbing banks. The fan-favorite series concluded its run in October 2020.

Bitch Planet, which hails from DeConnick and artist Valentine De Landro, began its run in December 2014. The series is set in a dystopian future where non-compliant women are sent to an off-planet prison.

Both Sex Criminals and Bitch Planet are published by Image Comics.

With the deal said to still be ongoing, it’s likely it’ll be a bit before we hear any official news regarding either series. However, it’s safe to say the signing of both Fraction and DeConnick is a huge get for Prime Video which has found major success with The Boys and Invincible, two adult-centric comic book properties.

  • Netflix Has Renewed ‘Wednesday’ for Season 2

Netflix Has Renewed ‘Wednesday’ for Season 2

While rumors suggested Wednesday was heading to Prime Video for a second season, it was announced on Friday that Netflix has renewed the series for Season 2. The news was unveiled in a special renewal announcement video from Netflix.

The video, which can be seen below, recaps the events of the first season. It opens to the gates of Nevermore Academy and follows Wednesday in a car as she recounts being hunted, haunted, and mimicked on the internet – with a clip showcasing the now iconic dance from Season 1. It moves to Jenna Ortega‘s Wednesday with a grin and a voiceover saying, “It’s been pure torture. Thank you.” There’s a promise of more misery being on the way followed by clips from Season 1.

Wednesday, which hit Netflix in November, quickly went on to become one of the streamer’s biggest titles and a global phenomenon. Not only did it ignite a dance craze on the internet, but the series also ranks at No. 2 on the most popular (English) TV list with 1.237 billion hours viewed within its first 28 days. More impressively, Wednesday is now only the third series on Netflix to ever cross 1 billion hours viewed, following Dahmer and Stranger Things.

Season 1 of the hit series is now streaming. A release date for Season 2 has not yet been revealed.
