Jack Kesy to Star in ‘Hellboy: The Crooked Man’

Jack Kesy is set to star in the latest Hellboy reboot for Millennium Media. The news was announced on Thursday, with Deadline confirming that the actor will play the titular role with production set to begin in a few months. As of now, Kesy is the only actor attached to the project, but additional casting is currently underway.

Regarding the casting of Kesy, Millennium Media co-president Jonathan Yunger expressed his excitement over seeing the actor introduce a younger take on the comics character. “Jack Kesy is a dynamic actor who has the ability to morph into his roles. His talent and stature are perfect for this younger Hellboy. I was very impressed with him while working together on The Outpost.”

Kesy is perhaps best known for his roles in movies such as Deadpool 2, Death Wish, and Blood Brother. On the television side, he has appeared in shows like Claws and The Alienist. He can currently be seen in Lionsgate’s Dark Web: Cicadia 3301.

News of the Hellboy reboot first surfaced in February when Millennium Media announced the project in Berlin. Crank director Brian Taylor is helming the project from a screenplay penned by Hellboy comic book creator Mike Mignola and Chris Golden. The Crooked Man will serve as the first film in Millennium’s slate with Telepool. As of now, there is no release date set for the project.

  • REVIEW: ‘Daisy Jones & the Six’

REVIEW: ‘Daisy Jones & the Six’

Daisy Jones & the Six quickly took over the book charts when it was published in 2019. The story of a fictional rock & roll band and their ultimate demise is a fascinating concept and author Taylor Jenkins Reid managed to successfully hook readers with their story. Translating that story to another medium, such as television, was never going to be easy… but the Prime Video television adaptation is damn near perfect thanks in part to a stellar cast and stellar songs.

Riley Keough stars as the titular Daisy Jones, a woman coming of age and trying to make her way in the music world. She works as a waitress and in her free time pens songs that she hopes to one day record. After having one of her songs stolen by a boyfriend, Daisy seeks to carve her own way out in the music world – not realizing just how quickly things will change, for better and worse. Starring alongside Keough’s Daisy is Billy Dunne, played by the always great Sam Claflin. He has Billy’s arrogance down to a tee; he’s stubborn, driven and easily gets wrapped up in the music. Like Daisy, Billy is driven to be bigger, to be more and live out his dreams of making music for a living. Something he eventually does with The Six. However, it isn’t until Daisy and Billy cross paths that their dreams truly take off and their worlds are changed forever.

Taking place in the 70s, Daisy Jones and the Six showcases multiple viewpoints of characters trying to break into the music scene. There’s Daisy, who starts off as a singer-songwriter too afraid to put herself out there, and Simone, a woman with a voice who finds herself too scared to speak up for herself. Finally, there are The Dunne Brothers led by Billy. They start off playing in their garage before seeking to play local gigs where they eventually run into another band that’ll put The Dunne Brothers on the course for world domination… as The Six. Getting to watch as these three acts set out to follow their dreams, each taking a different path than the other, it’s hard not to get caught up in the story of Daisy Jones and the Six.

One of the most fascinating things about Daisy Jones and the Six is that the series doesn’t try to make its characters likable. Daisy and Billy are both selfish assholes, and the series does not shy away from this; we see them as they battle addiction and as they struggle to work together. Even Simone, who is one of the strongest characters in the series, is allowed to make some mistakes along the way to her musical journey. None of the characters are perfect – in fact, the entirety of the Six is a pretty big mess – but that’s what helps to make the story so worth the ride it’ll bring audiences on. This is the type of the series that shouldn’t be binged. It’s full of heartache, anger, love and pain — which might sound bad — but in due time, we get to see these characters get to a healthier place… and the journey there is worth the time.

Keough and Claflin are electric on screen. Their story, in particular, is frustrating, anger-inducing, and yet, one of the most compelling stories the series has to offer. Keough delivers a career best performance as Daisy, and Claflin gets to show off his chops as Billy. The often-overlooked Suki Waterhouse is great as Karen, and Nabiyah Be is captivating every moment she is on screen as Simone. While there might be some departures from the book, Daisy Jones and the Six successfully captures the heart of the novel and delivers a heck of a powerful story perfectly captured for the small screen.

  • ‘Dead Boy Detectives’ Moving from HBO Max to Netflix

‘Dead Boy Detectives’ Moving from HBO Max to Netflix

The Dead Boy Detectives are gaining new life. The Hollywood Reporter announced on Friday that the series based on the DC characters of the same name is moving to Netflix from HBO Max. The decision to move the show comes as those in charge did not feel it fit in with what DC Studios executives, James Gunn and Peter Safran, have in mind for the studio’s first chapter.

It’s also said that another factor in the decision to move the series was that HBO Max reportedly wouldn’t have been able to market the series until next year. With that in mind, executives allowed the producers to take the project elsewhere, eventually finding a home with Netflix.

Dead Boy Detectives, which was officially ordered to series in April 2022, is based on DC Comics characters created by Neil Gaiman and Matt Wagner. The Dead Boy Detectives, Edwin Payne and Charles Rowland, first made their live-action debut in the critically acclaimed Doom Patrol series. The roles were later recast for Dead Boy Detectives. In this series, George Rexstrew will play Edwin Payne, and Jayden Revri will play Charles Rowland. Other members of the cast include Kassius Nelson as Crystal Palace, Briana Cuoco as Jenny the Butcher, Ruth Connell as the Night Nurse, Yuyu Kitamura as Niko and Jenn Lyon as Esther.

The series is produced by Greg Berlanti via his Berlanti Productions banner. Also serving as producers on the project are Doom Patrol’s Jeremy Carver, Steve Yockey (The Flight Attendant), and Beth Schwartz (Arrow). Both Yockey and Schwartz serve as showrunners on the project. Lee Toland Krieger, who has directed episodes of Riverdale and The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, directed the pilot for Dead Boy Detectives.

  • ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’ Opens to Franchise Best

‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’ Opens to Franchise Best

Marvel Studios’ Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania has topped the box office. The Ant-Man threequel managed to take in an impressive $120 million over Presidents Day weekend, beating out expectations. Perhaps more impressively, though, the film’s opening makes for the biggest opening for the Ant-Man films to date. The film’s opening is also the third-best opening for February and Presidents Day weekend, behind Black Panther’s $242.1 million opening and Deadpool’s $152.1 million opening.

Rich Gelfond, the CEO of IMAX, noted that $24 million of the film’s box office came from the premium format screens, calling it the first blockbuster of the year. “’AntMan’ is the first new Hollywood blockbuster out of the gate in 2023.”

Quantumania makes for the first $100 million domestic debut so far this year. Overall, the film took in $225 million at the worldwide box office, having earned $121 million internationally. While the movie didn’t quite take off in China as Marvel might’ve hoped, earning just $19.2 million, the film seems to be doing quite well despite its low rating among critics. Quantumania is currently sitting at 47% on Rotten Tomatoes following 308 reviews, but audiences don’t appear to feel the same way as critics – the audience score is currently at a solid 84% following 5k verified ratings.

For comparison’s sake, 2015’s Ant-Man opened to $57 million, while 2018’s Ant-Man and the Wasp opened to $76 million. While those films ended their runs with $519 million and $622 million, Quantumania is expected to end its run ahead of both titles.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is now playing in theaters.

    ‘The Penguin’ Adds ‘Runaways’ Alum

HBO Max’s The Penguin series has added a Marvel alum. Variety revealed on Monday that Rhenzy Feliz has joined the cast. Feliz, who previously headlined Marvel Television’s Runaways for Hulu, will join the previously announced Cristin Milioti who will star as Colin Farrell. They’ll both star alongside Colin Farrell who is reprising his role as the titular character following The Batman. Details regarding Feliz’s character are currently unknown.

Feliz starred as Alex Wilder on Hulu’s Runaways which ran for three seasons on the streaming service. Since then, he has appeared in American Horror Stories, The Tender Bar and The Same Storm. • Kevin Feige Confirms ‘Blade’ Begins Production Soon

Kevin Feige Confirms ‘Blade’ Begins Production Soon

After multiple delays, it looks like Marvel Studios is finally ready to move ahead with Blade. In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly to promote Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige teased what’s yet to come in the Marvel Cinematic universe.

In November, it was revealed that Yann Demange had signed on to direct Blade following Bassam Tariq‘s exit. Since Demange’s hiring, very little has surfaced about the Mahershala Ali-led film outside of countless rumors as to when production would start. Thankfully, Feige has officially commented on the film’s production date, telling EW that Demange is in Atlanta now and that filming will begin in “the next 10 weeks or so.”

You’ve also got the Blade movie with Mahershala Ali for next year. How’s that going?

It’s going well. Our director Yann [Demange] is down in Atlanta right now. Cameras roll in, like, the next 10 weeks or so.

Feige’s comments come after reports suggested the movie will begin production in May 2023. As we near closer to the start of production, it’s likely we’ll begin to hear more news on the project, especially if rumors are to be believed that Milan Ray is no longer involved in the project due to scheduling conflicts.

Blade is currently set to hit theaters on Sept. 6th, 2024.

  • Runtime Revealed for ‘John Wick: Chapter 4’

Runtime Revealed for ‘John Wick: Chapter 4’

Following the Superbowl television spot for John Wick: Chapter 4, which was meant to kick off Wick Week, the fourth film’s runtime has finally been unveiled. Per Collider, Chapter 4 reportedly clocks in at 2 hours and 49 minutes. That would make it the longest film in the franchise to date. This, of course, shouldn’t be shocking as director Chad Stahelski promised the newest installment would be the longest one yet.

We wrote a longer movie. We wrote a bigger movie. We wrote a longer script. We wrote at least a third more scenes than the last one. We expect it to be more. We’ve always expected it to be more. And I think the test, or at least what we’re judging ourselves by, is that worth it with how we executed what we want it to be more or not? And I think the answer’s yes.

    Stahelski to Collider

For comparisons sake, the first John Wick movie clocked in at 101 minutes. While its sequel, John Wick: Chapter 2, clocked in at 122 minutes, and John Wick: Chapter 3Parabellum ran 131 minutes. With a reported run time of 169 minutes, Chapter 4 continues the franchise’s trend of bigger sequels.

You can check the new poster for Chapter 4 below. And be sure to follow along on Twitter as Wick Week continues tomorrow.

  • Elizabeth Banks Wanted to Direct ‘Thor: Ragnarok’

Elizabeth Banks Wanted to Direct ‘Thor: Ragnarok’

Elizabeth Banks, who is currently promoting her newest film Cocaine Bear, recently revealed she tried to direct a Marvel Studios film in the past. In an interview with Variety, Banks admitted she had reached out to Marvel Studios to direct Thor: Ragnarok. The actress-turned-director said she decided to put herself out there for the job because it was an opportunity most women directors don’t get.

“I definitely wanted to make something muscular and masculine. I wanted to break down some of the mythology around what kinds of movies women are interested in making,” she explained. “For some bizarre reason, there are still executives in Hollywood who are like, ‘I don’t know if women can do technical stuff.’ There are literally people who are like, ‘Women don’t like math.’ It just persists.”

Unfortunately for Banks, Marvel Studios never called her back and the gig ultimately went to Taika Waititi, who would also go on to helm the fourth Thor installment. As it stands, Banks harbors no ill will toward Waititi, as she feels the right person landed the gig. “No one called me. Taika Waititi got the job. Rightfully so.”

Next up for Banks is Cocaine Bear, which she directed and calls a “ginormous risk.” That film will hit theaters on Feb. 24th.

  • ‘Zootopia,’ ‘Toy Story,’ ‘Frozen’ Sequels Ordered by Disney

‘Zootopia,’ ‘Toy Story,’ ‘Frozen’ Sequels Ordered by Disney

On Wednesday, Disney held its first quarter earnings call. While most of the news centered on Bob Iger‘s plans for Disney, both regarding staff cuts and its streaming goals for Disney+, Iger also teased some big films for the studio. During the call, Iger announced that Disney will be revising some of its biggest animated titles, including Toy Story.

“Today I’m so pleased to announce that we have sequels in the works from our animation studios to some of our most popular franchises: Toy Story, Frozen and Zootopia,” he said during the call. “We’ll have more to share about these productions soon, but this is a great example of how we’re leaning into our unrivaled brands and franchises.”

Disney’s decision to revisit these properties shouldn’t be all that surprising. Together, all four Toy Story films have earned over $2 billion at the worldwide box office. The franchise has even spawned multiple animated shorts including Toy Story Toons: Hawaiian Vacation and Toy Story Toons: Partysaurus Rex, as well as two television shorts Toy Story of Terror and Toy Story That Time Forgot.

Reports of a third Frozen film have been circulating for some time now, however, this marks the first time Disney has confirmed it is in the works. The move comes after Disney launched Olaf’s Presents on Disney+ last year. To date, both Frozen films have amassed over $2 billion at the box office. The most surprising film noted here is Zootopia, a project that was said to be getting a sequel a while ago after earning $1.023 billion at the worldwide box office. That film, like the others, also spawned a Disney+ series with Zootopia+, which expanded upon scenes from the film.

As of now, none of the projects have release dates.
