  • ‘Superman:’ Henry Cavill Likely Out as the Man of Steel

‘Superman:’ Henry Cavill Likely Out as the Man of Steel

DC Studios is looking to revamp the DC universe. Following the news that Wonder Woman 3 is not moving forward, it was revealed that Henry Cavill‘s return as Superman is already over. After making a cameo in Black Adam, the actor took to social media to proudly announce his return to DC as the Man of Steel. According to The Hollywood Reporter, however, that no longer appears to be the case.

New DC Studios heads James Gunn and Peter Safran are said to be in the final stages of drafting the future of DC Studios, and Cavill’s Superman doesn’t appear to be a part of those plans. Plans for a sequel to Man of Steel 2 are reportedly shut down, as is the return of Cavill as Superman. It’s said that the move comes as the new heads seek to close the curtain of the Snyderverse, including saying goodbye to the heroes previously cast by Zack Snyder — Cavill being one of them.

If that proves to be the case, it’s likely Jason Momoa will be out as Aquaman, too, although rumors suggest Momoa might have a different future at DC. Gunn and Safran are expected to make a presentation to Warner Bros. Discovery CEO, David Zaslav, which should help to make the plans for DC and DC Studios a bit clearer in the coming months.

  • CONFIRMED: Michael Gandolfini Boards ‘Daredevil: Born Again’

CONFIRMED: Michael Gandolfini Boards ‘Daredevil: Born Again’

A day after rumors circulated that Michael Gandolfini had joined the cast of Daredevil: Born Again, the news has been confirmed by Deadline. At the time of the rumor, we speculated that the actor could potentially be playing an up-and-coming mafioso, as his character was described as “an ambitious and earnest risk-taker with a very Staten Island-esque persona.” Unfortunately, Deadline was unable to reveal much else regarding his role, although they did suggest his character’s name might be Liam.

Gandolfini, of course, is perhaps best known for being the son of the late James Gandolfini. The young actor portrayed the younger version of his father’s most iconic character, Tony Soprano, in The Many Saints of Newark. He has since appeared in the Paramount+ limited series The Offer, the feature film Cherry and is next set to appear in Apple TV+’s Extrapolations.

Gandolfini is the first new cast member to be announced for the series. Casting is said to be underway, with the show reportedly looking to cast an actress for the role of White Tiger. Rumors have suggested Jenna Ortega has landed the role, although that has yet to be confirmed.

Daredevil: Born Again will star Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock/Daredevil and Vincent D’Onofrio as Wilson Fisk. The series, which will consist of 18 episodes, is set to begin production in New York next year for a 2024 release.

‘The Midnight Club’ Has Been Canceled at Netflix

Following the news that Mike Flanagan and Trevor Macy were leaving Netflix for Amazon, it was announced that The Midnight Club has officially been canceled at Netflix. The series, which was an adaptation of Christopher Pike‘s book of the same name, focused on a group of teenagers living at a hospice facility who formed the Midnight Club to share spooky stories with one another.

The show, which debuted in October, was heavily promoted by Netflix, and even had a massive panel at New York Comic Con, where Netflix shared the first episode with audience members ahead of its release. Flanagan went on record to say that the show had been developed as a multi-season series, noting that there was still plenty left to use from Pike’s books. He also revealed that, should the series be canceled, he would share the plans for the show’s future on Twitter.

The Midnight Club starred Iman Benson, Igby Rigney, Ruth Codd, Annarah Cymone, Sauriyan Sapkota, Adia, Aya Furukawa and William Chris Sumpter. All 10 episodes are now streaming on Netflix.

Gurinder Chadha to Direct & Produce Indian Princess Movie for Disney

Disney has brought on Bend it Like Beckham director Gurinder Chadha and screenwriter Paul Mayeda Berges to craft a new original musical feature that will be inspired by a dynamic princess from Indian history. Both Chadha and Berges will pen the screenplay for the film, while Chadha will direct the feature. Further details about the project are being kept under wraps.

Along with her work on Bend it Like Beckham, Chadha has directed titles like What’s Cooking?, Bride & Prejudice and Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging. Throughout her career, Chadha has been nominated twice for a BAFTA, once for Bend It Like Beckham and once for her feature film debut, Bhaji on the Beach. Bend it Like Beckham was a surprise box office hit, earning an impressive $76.5 million at the worldwide box office on a reported $5.6 million production budget.

The untitled project will be developed for Walt Disney Studios Motion Picture Production. Lindy Goldstein (The Nutcracker and the Four Realms) will produce the movie along with Chadha. As of now, the film doesn’t have a release date and no cast has been announced.

  • Mena Massoud Offers an Update on ‘Aladdin 2’

Mena Massoud Offers an Update on ‘Aladdin 2’

After the live-action take on Aladdin proved to be yet another success for Disney, a sequel was officially announced as being in development back in February 2020. Unfortunately, since then, things have been relatively quiet regarding Aladdin 2. While promoting his latest project, Amazon Freevee’s Hotel for the Holidays, Mena Massoud, who plays Aladdin, was asked to provide an update on the project, and it seems as though the sequel has stalled out a bit.

“I don’t know that there is movement. There was a change with the writers, and they are working on a brand new draft. That’s all I know. If ‘Aladdin 2’ happens, that’s fantastic. I think it should happen,” he said. “Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich of Rideback Productions, who do the “Lego” movies and “Aladdin,” want to make sure they get this right. So if we do see “Aladdin 2,” it’s not going to be based off the animated version at all. This is going to be a brand new original story.”

The Aladdin sequel doesn’t appear to be the only project undergoing changes. Billy Magnussen revealed back in May that the Disney+ spinoff centered around his character, Prince Anders, was still in development but undergoing rewrites. “It’s in development. We are in the stages of rewrites right now, and it’s still moving forward,” the actor revealed at the time.

Aladdin, which was a misfire among critics, was a box office success for Disney having earned $1.05 billion at the worldwide box office. The film, directed by Guy Ritchie, starred Massoud, Naomi Scott and Will Smith.

  • REVIEW: Guillermo del Toro and Mark Gustafson’s ‘Pinocchio’

REVIEW: Guillermo del Toro and Mark Gustafson’s ‘Pinocchio’

Pinocchio, once a beloved animated classic from Disney, was given new life this year thanks to a hybrid live-action film from Disney and director Robert Zemeckis and a stop-motion take from Guillermo del Toro and Mark Gustafson. Disney’s take, which starred Tom Hanks as Geppetto, was considered a misfire by both audiences and critics alike. While featuring an all-star cast, the movie itself often felt wooden. There was no charm to it, no spark, so it’s not entirely surprising then that many have been curious about Del Toro’s take on the legendary tale, especially given he has called the fable one close to his heart. While it’s often uneven, Del Toro and Gustafson have crafted a visually stunning adaptation that is incredibly emotional and worthy of a watch.

When it comes to the tale of Pinocchio, the story basics of the story are well-known. A boy puppet eager to become a real boy, and who must prove himself worthy of doing so. That story is still at the center of this take, but Del Toro and Gustafson manage to craft an even more compelling tale around it. While the Disney remake suggested Geppetto had a son, we never really learned much about him or what happened to him. In this version of Pinocchio, though, we get to see Geppetto and his son, Carlo, and their relationship before a tragedy cuts their time together short. It’s an incredibly heartbreaking moment that is handled with such care. It’s this particular scene that separates this version of Pinocchio from those before it – this isn’t a sugar-coated child’s tale. The emotion radiates off the screen thanks to the beautifully done stop-motion and the agony in the voice work.

That isn’t to say this adaptation of Pinocchio is without its flaws. This stop-motion take often feels like it drags, while somehow also managing to jump all over the place. It can be incredibly off-putting, but those able to make it beyond those moments will find that the uneven journey results in a beautifully told story. In a letter to the press, Del Toro explained that when crafting this take on Pinocchio, he wanted to showcase just how “brief and significant we are in our time with each other.” And although the film sometimes stumbles over its handling of death, it ultimately does highlight the heartbreaking reality of life and death.

I longed to do a film full of light, that would explain how brief and significant we are in our time with each other – and I wanted to do it with heartbreaking beauty and rendered by the most human craftsmanship. So, I chose one of the most delicate, artisanal forms of our art form – stop motion animation – and pushed it as much as possible.

    Del Toro

The classic Disney songs will, obviously, not be present in this take. And that does, unfortunately, hurt the movie as the songs introduced in their place are forgettable and don’t really add much to the film overall. In fact, most of them go on far longer than necessary. Much like the film itself. While a visual feast packed with an emotional story, the movie’s nearly two-hour runtime is definitely felt by the end.

All in all: Pinocchio is a heartfelt movie that welcomes its viewers to reconsider what we leave in our wake upon death. It’s a heartbreaking tale meant to remind us to live.

‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Flying Back into Theaters

Paramount is bringing Top Gun: Maverick back to theaters for a limited time. On Tuesday, the studio announced that Maverick will be flying back into theaters, including select premium large formats and IMAX, beginning December 2nd through December 15th.

It remains the highest-grossing movie of the year by a landslide and is one of only two films to cross $1 billion at the box office this year, with Jurassic World Dominion ($1.001 billion) being the second.
