‘The Boys’ Showrunner on That Marvelous Cameo

The Boys Season 3 premiere features plenty of noteworthy moments. And while there’s a particular moment that is keeping many talking, there’s also a pretty impressive cameo by a Marvel-ous actor.

In a new interview with Variety, The Boys showrunner Eric Kripke explained how Charlize Theron became involved with the project. According to Kripke, Theron was approached about The Boys by producer Seth Rogen, who she had just worked with on The Long Shot. Despite the cameo being small, the scene still required Theron to come in for a costume fitting.

“I actually feel kind of bad about it, because I’m sure he positioned it like, ‘Hey, do us a favor, pop on camera and it’s a cameo.’ Then the next call is our costume designer, ‘OK, you need to come in and we need to design this super suit.’ She shows up on a whole big day of shooting with several camera crews and everything. But she was such an immensely great sport and is so funny. I mean, obviously she’s in comedies, but watching her work up close and in person, the level with which she commits to the most ridiculous dialogue that anyone has ever said, it’s absurd. The heart and soul with which she delivers it is so funny and stunning. We were really lucky to have her.”

    Eric Kripke

Interestingly enough, Kripke wasn’t aware of her appearance as Clea in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. While he believes the show approached the actress first regarding the cameo, Kripke was thrilled to see Theron pop up while watching Multiverse of Madness. “I was in the theater watching ‘Doctor Strange’ with my kids and then that cameo came up and I was like, ‘Yes!’ Anything we can do to draw a line between us and Marvel is a good day.”

While her role in The Boys was a minor one, Theron looks to have an exciting future within the Marvel Cinematic Universe following Multiverse of Madness. For now, fans can watch Theron’s cameo as Stormfront in The Boys on Prime Video, with Multiverse of Madness set to hit Disney+ later this month.

  • ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Tops Box Office for Second Weekend

‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Tops Box Office for Second Weekend

Top Gun: Maverick continues to soar at the box office.

The Tom Cruise-led movie is on track to pull in $84.5 million in its second outing. That comes after an impressive $25 million Friday. Even more impressive, however, is that the film only saw a projected 33% drop from its opening weekend. With the movie performing so well, Top Gun: Maverick added an additional 19 cinemas in North America for its second weekend, which is notable as the film already earned the widest domestic opening last weekend with 4,732 North American cinemas.

Maverick‘s 33% decline is a stunning achievement, it also makes for the smallest drop in domestic box office history for a film that opened above $100 million. It is almost unheard of for films to see such a small drop. In fact, Cruise’s s last blockbuster, 2018’s Mission: Impossible – Fallout, saw a 42.5% drop in its second outing.

Paramount is expecting Maverick to expand its domestic haul to $290 million by Sunday. It is already Cruise’s biggest film ever at the domestic box office, pulling ahead of 2005’s War of the Worlds. That film pulled in $243.3 million throughout its time in theaters. Maverick should continue to preform well at the box office until Jurassic World: Dominion debuts next weekend.

As for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, as Cruise’s Maverick continues to dominate at the box office, the Marvel Studios sequel looks to expand its domestic gross to $388.6 million through Sunday. That will make it Disney’s ninth highest grossing Marvel Studios production, pulling ahead of 2017’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

  • Colton Haynes Reveals Why He Left ‘Arrow’ Ahead of Season 8

Colton Haynes Reveals Why He Left ‘Arrow’ Ahead of Season 8

With the release of his new memoir, Colton Haynes is finally opening up as to what led him to exit Arrow ahead of Season 8.

His memoir, Miss Memory Lane, was released on May 31st. The 256-page book from Atria Books takes fans down memory lane as Haynes recalls his struggles with addiction, abuse, and his time on Teen Wolf and the CW’s Arrow. The actor, who is set to appear in the Paramount+ Teen Wolf revival movie, left MTV’s Teen Wolf series in 2012 after appearing for two seasons. The decision to leave was financially-based as the network refused to pay the actor what his fellow stars were being paid. Ironically enough, this is an issue Arden Cho experienced too when she received a lowball offer to return for the Paramount+ Teen Wolf movie.

Unfortunately, Haynes had an even more frustrating experience when he was a part of the cast of the CW’s Arrow. The actor starred in the series for seven seasons before transitioning to a recurring role ahead of Season 8. For Haynes, the decision to exit Arrow after Season 7 was due to personal reasons. He wasn’t in the best state mentally, nor did he have a great relationship with his co-stars, or at least one in particular.

In his memoir he writes, “I had walked away from my full-time job on Arrow at the beginning of the year, supposedly because my contract had ended, but it was really because I was too depressed and I couldn’t stand working with one of my cast mates.”

Arrow ended after Season 8 and since then, Haynes hasn’t really appeared in much outside of an episode of Hulu’s Dollface, as well as a music video for Lil Nas X. He can next be seen in Teen Wolf: The Movie, where he’ll reprise his role as Jackson Whittemore. Production recently wrapped and the movie is set to debut sometime this year.

  • REVIEW: Season 3 of ‘The Boys’ is a Chaotic Ride Worth the Trip

REVIEW: Season 3 of ‘The Boys’ is a Chaotic Ride Worth the Trip

Over the course of two seasons, Prime Video’s The Boys has quickly become one of the best superhero series on the small screen. It achieved this not only due to its stellar cast, which is led by Karl Urban‘s Butcher, but also the willingness to play into campiness and gore. So, it’s not entirely surprising that Season 3 of The Boys decided to push the limits even more. Perhaps there are no moments nearly as memorable as a self-pleasuring Homelander as seen at the end of Season 2, but the series manages to successfully make use of its eight episodes in ways most shows could only hope to do.

Following the events of Season 2, The Boys kicks off its third season still dealing with the aftershock of Stormfront. Naturally, her true nature has divided fans of the Seven – those that agree with her, aka Nazis, are upset over what happened to her. While others are glad to see her go. The person struggling the most, however, isn’t Stormfront. It is evident he loved her, but as this is Homelander, there’s also a sense of arrogance as he struggles to deal with his feelings. He’s very much still the unpredictable man-child we’ve seen before, and it seems Stormfront’s predicament has only made him worse. He’s more volatile than usual, and is no longer keen to be the poster boy of Vought.

As entertaining as his shenanigans can be, they do quickly become tiresome, though. Thankfully, the creatives seemed to understand it was time to introduce a new character to focus on because as great as it is to see the boys eager to takedown Homelander, the story can become stale at times: Enter Jensen Ackles‘ Soldier Boy. Perhaps the most developed character in the series, Soldier Boy brings with him a much-needed energy boost to the latest season.

His story is set up perfectly to weave a new and exciting tale that ultimately ties together with the Boys and their original mission with ease. More importantly, though, Ackles‘ Soldier Boy plays off of Urban‘s Butcher perfectly. When the two are together on screen, it’s hard to look away, which is saying something given Urban‘s onscreen chemistry with his team members. These two are dynamite.

Those that are eager to see the series move away from trying to takedown Vought should be excited to know that The Boys Season 3 finally gives its secondary characters time to shine. This isn’t just a story about Butcher and his journey of revenge anymore. It’s not all about Robin and Becca. And while Ryan is an essential character this season, this isn’t a story that’s centered around him either. The overall theme seems to be that of family and self-discovery, and it’s the best dang decision the writers made this go-round. Heroes that viewers might’ve hated before? They’re given the chance to flourish. While others that the audience might’ve liked before? Well, there’s a good chance viewers will be rethinking their favorites by season’s end.

One of the most exciting parts of The Boys has always been its willingness to poke fun at other comic book properties. Yes, there are moments of predictability, but Season 3 has largely moved away from those moments. It’s chaotic in the best type of ways and is a hell of a ride that’ll leave viewers smiling by the season’s end. As for what lies in store for Season 4, it’s clear the writers still have plenty of stories left to explore, and it seems likely the crazy train is a ways off from stopping.

Overall: The Boys Season 3 is a bumpy ride full of chaotic twists and turns and a hell of a performance by series newbie Jensen Ackles.

  • ‘Twisted Metal’ Adds Will Arnett as the Voice of Sweet Tooth

‘Twisted Metal’ Adds Will Arnett as the Voice of Sweet Tooth

Arnett, who serves as an executive producer on the series, has long been rumored to be a part of it for some time. It wasn’t until today, however, that the actor was announced to be voicing none other than the burly Sweet Tooth. The chaos-loving character is known for his iconic ever-smiling clown mask and doomsday ice cream truck that he drives around Lost Vegas.

The actor joins a cast that includes the likes of Anthony Mackie, Stephanie Beatriz, Thomas Haden Church, and Neve Campbell. Mackie is set to star as John Doe, while Beatriz plays the character of Quiet. Church will play Agent Stone and Campbell, who is recurring in the series, will play Raven.

Twisted Metal hails from Cobra Kai writer Michael Jonathan Smith and is based on the classic video game franchise of the same name. It has been developed as a half-hour, high-octane action-comedy series that is based on an original take from Deadpool writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. The series will focus on a motor-mouthed outsider, Mackie’s Doe, who is offered a chance at a better life with a bit of a caveat – he’ll need to deliver a mysterious package across a post-apocalyptic wasteland and survive.

Twisted Metal will stream exclusively on Peacock upon its release.

Paramount+’s ‘Fatal Attraction’ Series Adds Amanda Peet

  • ‘Letterkenny’ and ‘Shoresy’ are Proof Jared Keeso is a Huge Talent on the Small Screen

‘Letterkenny’ and ‘Shoresy’ are Proof Jared Keeso is a Huge Talent on the Small Screen

When it comes to the small screen, it is very hard to stand out. This is partly because there’s so much to watch on television thanks to primetime channels as well as the streaming channels that continue to try to build their own lineup of originals. Due to an overwhelming amount of shows, it isn’t entirely surprising that some shows struggle to gain the viewership necessary to keep them on air. They seem to die off just as quickly as they appear. This, however, was not the case with Letterkenny.

A series that, honestly, could have easily got lost in the mix somehow struck gold and became a huge hit – so much so that Hulu picked up the streaming rights to it in 2019. Since then, the series has continually seen its popularity grow, quickly becoming one of Hulu’s most popular titles. Which is why it isn’t entirely surprising that both Crave TV and Hulu moved ahead with the spinoff series, Shoresy.

The success of Letterkenny – which has 10 seasons available for your enjoyment – almost felt like an overnight success, even though it wasn’t. It’s rare for a series to take off like Letterkenny did, and it is something most shows would kill for in this day and age. So, what exactly makes Letterkenny – and Shoresy – so great? There’s one man who deserves a hell of a lot of the credit and that’s leading man Jared Keeso.

In 2013, Keeso did a YouTube short with his friend Nathan Dales, aka Daryl, and K. Trevor Wilson, aka Squirrely Dan. The short was titled Letterkenny Problems and was co-written by Keeso and Jordan Beirnes. It wasn’t until 2015 that Letterkenny Problems would become a television series, though, with a name change after Crave commissioned the series. After it debuted in 2016, the series quickly became a hit and cemented its place as one of the internet’s favorite shows.

Prior to Letterkenny and Shoresy, Keeso mainly made his career as a background actor with small roles in shows like Supernatural, Smallville, and Caprica. On the film side, he’d had small roles in films such as I Love You, Beth Cooper and Elysium. Letterkenny, though, proved that Keeso is capable of being a leading man. More importantly, though, it showed off more than his acting capabilities – it proved he was able to write well-crafted stories. This is something that is even more notable with Shoresy. Keeso wonderfully crafts a spinoff series that somehow feels unique and original, despite having originated from another show.

While Littlekenny was a bit of a misfire, both Letterkenny and Shoresy prove that Keeso is able to deliver entertaining content that captivates audiences. The comedy aspects are great, but it’s more than that; under all of the humor, both Letterkenny and Shoresy also do a great job at character development — something we perhaps best see with the Skids and the hockey players. If Keeso can successfully deliver stories about these characters, it’s hard not to think about what other types of stories he’d be able to successfully tell if given the chance.

At a time when television seems to have too much to offer, with very little of it being of merit, it’s important to note shows and creators that are providing quality content. Keeso is not just a leading man, but also a quality writer who has successfully launched two well-received series. “Pitter patter, let’s get at ‘er.”
