  • 2023 Slate

In late October 2021 Sony slated two new, untitled Marvel films, for 2023. There are several possibilities for the projects eyeing these specific release dates. From projects already known to be in active development and with talent attached (Spider-Woman), sequels to already established IPs banking in on previous box office success (Venom 3) or even something from the list of other Spidey-related Marvel projects Sony has been trying to get off the ground.

  • ‘Morbius’

    ‘Morbius’

    Premiere: April 1, 2022

After Venom‘s success, Sony increased its efforts to develop its own shared universe, populated by Spider-Man characters whose rights were in their possession. Development began on a Morbius feature and in June 2018 Jared Leto was brought on board as the titular character. Early 2019 marked the beginning of principal photography as production wrapped up later that year, around June.

The first trailer was released in January 2020, as the studio eyed a July release date. Due to the COVI-19 pandemic, this was later changed to March 19, 2021. With the pandemic still far from being under control, and with cinemas still closed in most countries, the release date was once again shifted, this time to October 8, 2021, then to January 21, 2022, before settling on January 28.

In yet another pandemic-related delay, mostly due to the worldwide dissemination of the COVID-19 Omicron strain, Morbius‘ premiere was moved to April 1, a full 21 months after its original release date.

  • ‘Kraven, The Hunter’

    ‘Kraven, The Hunter’

    Premiere: October 6, 2023

After being in development for years, Sony moved forward with Kraven the Hunter in August of 2020 when director J.C. Chandor came on to the project with Richard Wenk writing.

In what was seen as an unexpected move, Aaron Taylor-Johnson was cast as Sergei Kravinoff / Kraven himself in late May 2021. This will mark Taylor-Johnson‘s return to comic book adaptations after a short stint as Quicksilver in Avengers: Age of Ultron and as Dave Lizewski in the Kick-Ass duology.

Early 2022 saw a couple of names being added to the cast, with Russell Crowe being the clear stand-out. The Academy Award winner will play an, as of yet, undisclosed role. A few weeks afterward it was Ariana DeBose who joined the project as voodoo priestess Calypso, alongside Alessandro Nivola who will play the movie’s main villain. This character’s name hasn’t been announced at this point.

Four months ahead of its January 2023 release date Sony decided to push the project back a further ten months, with the premiere now set for October of the same year.

    DC MULTIVERSE PROJECTS IN DEVELOPMENT

DC has an incredible number of projects at various stages of development. Some of these are destined for HBO Max and others for theaters. Here’s what we know…

    ZATANNA

Zatanna Zatara follows in the footsteps of her father, the all-powerful magician Giovanni Zatara. Zatanna has learned from the best and is able to cast any spell by simply speaking backward.

    STATIC SHOCK

The film will follow young metahuman Virgil Hawkins who is capable of electromagnetic
    control and generation.

    HOURMAN

The original Hourman, Rex Tyler, was a veteran member of the Justice Society of America and creator of the Miraclo synthesis, a substance that would give Tyler super strength and endurance for one a day. Tyler’s son, Rick, would go on to pick up the mantle of his father and use miraclo to fight alongside the JSA.

    PLASTIC WOMAN

The Film will follow a gender-bent version of the popular comic book character known as Plastic Man.

    BLACKHAWK

During WW2, The Blackhawks were a group of ace pilots lead by a man only known as
Blackhawk, operating out of Blackhawk Island, facing off against the Axis powers during the war while aiding the allies.

    STRANGE ADVENTURES

Announced in late October of 2019 as a series being developed for HBO Max, Greg Berlanti’s Strange Adventures is shaping up as a Twilight Zone-esque anthology that serves as “cautionary tales set in a world where superpowers exist.” These “morality tales” will involve characters from all over the DC Universe, though it’s probably not coincidental that Eisner Award-winning writer Tom King is rolling out a 12-issue Adam Strange comic beginning in the Spring of 2020, bringing the once popular and pulpy character back into the spotlight.

    AMAZONS OF THEMYSCIRA

Announced in December of 2019, the spin-off is being developed by Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins.

    GREEN LANTERN CORPS

Geoff Johns was expected to deliver a script for the film sometime before the end of 2019.

    GREEN LANTERN

Touted as DC’s biggest television series ever made, the Greg Berlanti Green Lantern series will debut on HBO Max at a yet to be determined time.

    SUPERMAN

There is no script or director currently attached to any Man of Steel-related projects making it unlikely we’ll see the Big Blue Boy Scout in a solo film any time soon. However, it was revealed in June of 2020 that the studio had approached Henry Cavill about reprising the role in other DC films.

    JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK

Different from the long gestating film project, this project is being developed for HBO Max by JJ Abrams as part of his deal with WarnerMedia. At this point, it sounds like we may also see Zatana and Constantine projects rolled out as foundations to this project!

    AQUAMAN: KING OF ATLANTIS

An animated series by James Wan, this HBO Max show will take a look at the early years of Arthur as he tries to prove himself to his people.

    DC SUPERHERO HIGH

Elizabeth Banks is developing this half-hour comedy series for HBO Max that promises to follow a group of gifted students who aren’t aware of the destinies that await them.

Picking up after the first film, Joker 2 would see the return of Joaquin Phoenix as the clown prince of crime, following a riot that shook Gotham and its wealthy citizens to its core. The last we saw Arthur Fleck, he found himself locked within Arkham, with quite the extended stay. In June of 2022, the sequel’s title was revealed to be Joker: Folie à Deux.

In August 2022 it was reported that the movie, which is being described as a musical, would be eying an October 2024 release. It was also confirmed that Lady Gaga was cast alongside Phoenix in the upcoming sequel, following rumors that she could be playing Harley Quinn. Those rumors were later confirmed and photos from the set revealed the actress sporting the character’s iconic look.

    ‘The Flash’

    Premiere: June 23, 2023

After changing creative teams several times, The Flash finally seems to have settled on a direction and is headed to theaters in what should be a great 2022 for Warner Media’s DC characters. Ezra Miller is expected to return for the film and both Michael Keaton and Ben Affleck are set to return as their respective Batmen, meaning we’ll see some multiversal high jinks ensue when this one hits theaters!

On October 5, 2020, Warner Bros. announced yet another reshuffling of their upcoming DC release schedule due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. This meant that The Flash is now set for release in the United States on November 4, 2022.

Sasha Calle was officially confirmed as Kara Zor-El / Supergirl in February 2021 by director Andy Muschietti himself. The following month it was announced that Billy Crudup, due to scheduling conflicts, would be exiting the movie just as Maribel Verdú was joining the cast as Barry’s mother, Nora Allen. After Crudup’s exit, it didn’t take long to cast a replacement with Ron Livingston (Office Space) stepping in as Barry’s father. On the same day, Saoirse-Monica JacksonRudy Mancuso and Ian Loh were also confirmed to have joined the cast.

The movie’s release suffer a rather big delay when in March 2022 Warner Bros, decided to move its premiere from November 2022 to June 2023.
