  • Mena Massoud Confirms He Initially Auditioned for ‘Ahsoka’s Ezra

Mena Massoud Confirms He Initially Auditioned for ‘Ahsoka’s Ezra

It feels like yesterday when rumors flooded the internet that Aladdin‘s Mena Massoud would be playing Ezra Bridger in Star Wars‘ upcoming Ahsoka series. Many were quite hyped about the actor getting the role but it wasn’t until earlier today that it was confirmed that actor Eman Esfandi has gotten the role for Ezra. Of course, it left the door open to how the rumors started in regards to Massoud.

As it turns out, the actor took to Twitter to share his relief that the rumors were finally losing steam. Still, he did highlight that he actually auditioned for the role with a self-tape months ago and simply didn’t get further along in the casting process.

It’s a shame he didn’t get the role but the actor shared that he’s excited to see what Esfandi can bring to the role. Plus, he also highlighted how similar he looks to the Star Wars Rebels character. Given his performance in Aladdin, it’s a shame he hasn’t found a new role in the Disney playhouse again but perhaps there’s another one just on the horizon waiting for him.

D23: New Artwork Spotted for Pixar’s ‘Elemental’

Pixar is going to take the stage later today during the D23 Expo and it seems they have already prepared some new key art for their next cinematic entry, Elemental. The exploration of two types of elements that normally wouldn’t get along sounds just about right for Pixar’s usual yet unusual storytelling ideas and here’s hoping we get a trailer later today. For now, it seems we have a great visual teasing the world that we’ll be introduced to in Elemental, as shared by @DiscussingFilm.

  • Disney+’s ‘National Treasure’ Star on Stepping in Nicolas Cage’s Shadow

Disney+’s ‘National Treasure’ Star on Stepping in Nicolas Cage’s Shadow

National Treasure is making a big comeback on Disney+ but with a few new faces. Nicolas Cage won’t return as Ben Gates but it opens up the possibility for a new generation to carry on his character’s mission. As it turned out, Lisette Olivera was the one to nab the lead role for the spin-off series titled Edge of History. While the franchise wasn’t the biggest box office draw, it still made enough to get a sequel and gain cult status. So, it wasn’t easy for the actress to step in those shoes.

After my casting announcement had been made and the whole world knew it was me that was gonna be at the forefront of the franchise, there were some people that were disappointed, but there were a lot of people that were very supportive

    Lisette Olivera

Still, the series is set to carry on the legacy that the original established, especially with the original writers of the films, Marianne Wibberly and Cormac Wibberley, once again returning for the new production. She got the chance to highlight elements they couldn’t in the films due to the limited runtime.

The story of telling the history of America is so interesting because it depends on the point of view. We haven’t really covered that in any of the movies.

    Marianne Wibberley

It definitely sounds like they are embracing aspects of the original while adding a new spin. Plus, if the show draws an audience and gets additional seasons there’s always another chance for Nicolas Cage to return and maybe take the new explorer under his wing in an unlikely pairing.

D23: ‘Willow’ Concept Art and Costumes Offer New Glimpse at Upcoming Series

D23 is going to be a busy weekend for everyone in the entertainment business, as there’ll be quite a lot to write about. With a lot of focus on what Marvel may have to offer, there are a lot of Disney+ originals heading our way that’ll offer some distraction from the usual MCU fanfare. While we not only got a first look at Indiana Jones 5 through concept art and costumes from the sequel, it seems the same treatment was given to the upcoming Disney+ continuation of Willow, as shared by Andrew Rainer on Twitter.

  • D23: ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ Almost Featured Groot on Fire

D23: ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ Almost Featured Groot on Fire

No, you read that correctly but a new piece of Thor: Love and Thunder concept art reveals that at some point in development, Groot may have been in flames. As shared by our own Charles Murphy attending the event, it seems like they were showcasing some artwork from the Thor sequel during his time with the Guardians. It features the Asgardian with his beard and likely took place earlier in the flashback of his time with the Guardians but it’s certainly something seeing Groot in flames like that.

It’s always fun to get a look behind the scenes at what may have been, especially in a film that was as unhinged as Love and Thunder. In many ways, they definitely could’ve gone in any direction with the iconic Guardians of the Galaxy. Of course, having one of its most popular members just catch fire and not give it more focus might’ve been a waste especially with Groot being made of wood, Rocket wouldn’t just stand by as his son burns to a crisp.

  • Zach Gilford Boards ‘Criminal Minds’ Revival

Zach Gilford Boards ‘Criminal Minds’ Revival

The Paramount+ revival of Criminal Minds has a new name and a new actor. The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Zach Gilford has joined the series in a key recurring role. He’ll play Elias Voit, an analyst for a cyber-security firm who has a dark side and an obsession with death. More interestingly, though, the series has received a new name. The revival is now titled Criminal Minds: Evolution.

The actor is set to join the previously confirmed returning cast of Joe Mantegna, Kirsten Vangsness, Adam Rodriguez, A.J. Cook, Aisha Tyler and Paget Brewster. Not returning for the revival are Matthew Gray Gubler and Daniel Henney, with the latter currently starring on Prime Video’s adaptation of The Wheel of Time.

While the revival is bringing back much of its core cast, the series is making one major change. In the past, Criminal Minds saw the team solve the case usually by the episode’s end. In the revival, though, the series will take a more serialized approach. Per the logline, Evolution will see the team “come up against their greatest threat yet, an UnSub who has used the pandemic to build a network of other serial killers. As the world opens back up and the network goes operational, the team must hunt them down, one murder at a time.”

Gilford is perhaps best known for his work on shows such as Friday Night Lights, Good Girls and Midnight Mass. The actor has also appeared in films like The Purge: Anarchy and Devil’s Due. Next up for Gilford are the Netflix series The Midnight Club and Mike Flanagan‘s The Fall of the House of Usher.

Criminal Minds: Evolution hails from showrunner Erica Messer, who worked on the original hit series. Production on the revival is currently underway.
