While Marvel Animation continues to treat classic comic book composition as gospel, the live-action studio pipeline is about to deliver its perhaps most high-octane ensemble collision yet. Global press conference details for Spider-Man: Brand New Day provided an explosive breakdown of the impending theatrical face-off, with Tom Holland and director Destin Daniel Cretton revealing that pitting Spider-Man against the Hulk results in a surprisingly intimate, wonderful, and brutal conflict.
The pairing is an iconic match from the original comics finally realized on the big screen, made possible here by Mark Ruffalo returning to provide the physical motion-capture, voice, and emotional intelligence required to bring the giant, green powerhouse to life.
Directing Two Top-Tier Actors
For Cretton, directing the sequences was exceptionally straightforward. “I mean, you put Tom Holland and Mark together in a scene and it’s you know, it’s explosive, it’s wonderful, it gets surprisingly intimate,” Cretton stated. “They’re two top-tier actors… and it was very easy for me to direct. They were able to improvise, they were able to bring life into every moment that they were in together.”
The creative synergy was only occasionally broken by the reality of shooting the VFX sequences: ” full commitment… I remember me standing on an apple box and Mark would be holding this gigantic Hulk hand and I’m pretending that it’s choking me and then he’s doing the voice… and there were real moments where I was like, I just have to trust the process,” Holland revealed.
For Kevin Feige, witnessing Spidey and Hulk together on location in New York was a massive geek moment that he admitted he didn’t dare dream would be possible, promising action that matches and surpasses what fans have previously seen in the high-level video game adaptations.
