The long-standing operational standard of absolute secrecy inside Marvel Studios has found its new live-action champion: Sadie Sink. During the global press conference for Spider-Man: Brand New Day in New York City, the producers behind the franchise finally broke their silence on her highly anticipated arrival in the shared universe, hailing the Stranger Things breakout star as an unsung hero of the massive theatrical sequel.
While the identity of Sink’s character name was notably omitted from the official press notes—and the actress herself remained tight-lipped regarding any generalized details about the character—Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal did provide definitive hints about the narrative weight she is carrying.
Alienated and Magnificently Cast
Pascal revealed that Sink’s magnificent performance was made easier because her character is navigating the exact same internal, emotional, and social dilemmas as everyone else in the film, including Frank Castle and MJ. Sink’s role is grappling with profound isolation and alienation—and is seemingly in total denial about the life they are truly living.
Pascal explained, “The thing that is true for her character and every other character in the movie is that they’re all going through the same thing. They’re all going through the sense of isolation and feeling different and feeling alienated and feeling in denial about the lives that they’re living“.
Feige further unmasked the seamless nature of her casting, confirming that there was no audition process required. Sink was aggressively pursued specifically because co-producer Emily Fong suggested her for the specific storyline the writers had already drafted. Feige recalled, “The reason it’s the character that people will see very, very soon is because of Sadie, is because our co-producer Emily Fong said, ‘Well, Sadie Sink could play this character.’ And Destin had worked with her. And within that moment, we went, oh, yes. It should be her, and it should be this character“.
While Sink is widely believed to be playing the MCU’s Jean Grey, nobody at Marvel is willing to give away the surprise which means you’ll have to wait until Spider-Man: Brand New Day hits theaters on July 31 to find out who she’s playing.
