As Marvel Studios has once again postponed Black Widow‘s release, it gives us some time to brush up on our comic history. The film will focus on Natasha Romanoff’s history with the Red Room. It is a top-secret Soviet institute that turned young women into elite assassins. Of course, Natasha was once a member before joining S.H.I.E.L.D. at an unknown point. The upcoming film will dive deep into the various characters from her past who all may have deep ties with the secret organization. So, let’s use this opportunity to dive deep into the various characters in 400 words or less.
Yelena is the youngest addition to the comics. She appeared in 1999’s Inhumans Vol. 2 #5. You read that right, she made her debut while Earth and Attilan were at war with each other. She also trained in the Red Room Academy, where she even believes she surpassed Natasha Romanoff. When we first meet her, she is sent to deliver a device that could help Attilan win the invasion. She ended up failing her mission against her bittered rival but learned a valuable lesson. At one point, she was captured by S.H.I.E.L.D. and swapped faces with Nathasha’s. Of course, she was not too happy with this and left the spy life behind her. She made a career as a lingerie model before being dragged back into her old life when she gets wrapped up in the export of stolen medical supplies. She would turn back to her original life which would lead to many confrontations with the Avengers. She would later take on the Black Widow mantle and temporarily join the Thunderbolts.
Marvel Studios managed to get Florence Pugh in the role of Yelena for Black Widow. There were teases that Natasha would potentially pass on the mantle to her before facing her fate in Avengers: Endgame. In the family dynamic teased through the trailers, she is the younger sister. She is very independent and quite confident in her ability. Of course, she was also trained in the Red Room and seems to know quite a bit about Taskmaster. We also get glimpses of her going through a procedure that could pull her towards the evil side. Pugh is a fantastic addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, who hopefully will be around for more future projects.

Melina Vostokoff is more famous as the assassin Iron Maiden. She made her initial appearance in Marvel Fanfare #11 in 1983. Her name is due to her flexible metal costume that covers her entire body. She was a Russian agent who lived in the shadow of Black Widow during her time working for the government. At one point, she broke off from Russia to work as a freelancer. In one mission, she had the chance to assassinate her once hated rival. She worked alongside others but was the only one able to keep with Natasha only to get interrupted by a S.H.I.E.L.D. team. She would often return to take on the Avengers multiple times. At one point, she joined the female super-criminal army Femizons. Melina also was captured by Thunderbolt’s Joystick during the Superhuman Registration Act.
Rachel Weisz will portray the character in the upcoming Black Widow film. This version of the character will have close ties to the Red Room. She acts as a mother-figure to Natasha alongside David Harbour‘s Alexei Shostakov. It is unsure what her role in the story would be. The character’s villainous nature could point to her betraying the family at some point in the story. It sadly would be a rather dramatic turn given how much Natasha seems to be focusing on reuniting them. There could also be ties to Taskmaster, who currently has taken over control of the Red Room. Sadly, we won’t see her iconic Iron Maid outfit, but maybe they’ll add a tribute to her comic design.
Falcon and the Winter Soldier is still filming in Prague, and we’ve been anxiously waiting for some kind of sign of life from the project. It is crazy to think it originally was going to air back in August. Now, they are still trying to wrap up the shots that were missing since the Disney+ series was halted earlier in the year. We still know very little about the team behind the productions or any details on where this series will take us. The first teaser trailer did tease a global adventure. Luckily, a local site was nice enough to share some pictures from the set that confirm a part of the story will take place in Latvia. They also confirm that they are reusing locations from before the quarantine, so this might be trying to finish the sequence that got interrupted.
The Instagram video also comes with a comment that confirms Anthony Mackie is present during filming.
They do confirm that Prague will be used as a stand-in for two locations, the previously-mentioned Latvia and an unknown Middle Eastern location. The site brings up that Matthew J. Lloyd is acting as a cinematographer, but GWW once revealed P.J. Dillon in that role. Right now, we can’t confirm if this may end up being true. Lloyd has a history with Marvel Studios, as he worked on Spider-Man: Far From Home. It is briefly mentioned in the comments of one Instagram picture but nothing is confirmed. So, our main focus will remain on the set pictures. As I live in Europe, I am glad to see our architecture and cities represented in these projects. It is an interesting choice to use Prague as a stand-in for a Middle Eastern country, but the first image above may be the one they are referencing. Falcon and the Winter Soldier has no release date as of now, so hopefully, we get a trailer in the coming months teasing this globetrotting adventure.
HBO Max’s Green Lantern was announced back in 2019 during the streaming service’s reveal event. We had little information at the time besides Greg Berlanti‘s involvement. He is certainly no stranger to DC, as he pioneered the current DC TV line-up. He is well-known behind the shows The Flash, Arrow, Supergirl, Titans, and Doom Patrol. Ever since we have not received any updates on the status of the show. Finally, Deadline announced that the show would be written by Arrowverse alum Marc Guggenheim and writer Seth Grahame-Smith, who is known for The Lego Batman Movieand the It films. With the announcement of the writers, we got also got the confirmation that the show was ordered for ten hour-long episodes. It will feature the likes of many fan-favorite lanterns such as Alan Scott, Jessica Cruz, Simon Baz, Guy Gardner, Sinestro, and Kilowog. They also teased new additions to the ranks of the Green Lantern Corps. Story details are still being kept under wraps so it will be interesting how they balance the different eras.
Alan Scott is the sole lantern of the Justice Society of America and is still confirmed as Earth’s first Green Lantern. It is uncertain if we even see Sinestro from the Yellow Lantern Corps at one point in the series. This show has the chance to introduce some really unique dynamics and relationships with its large cast. Simon Baz and Jessica Cruz, two recent additions, have shown the difficulties of fighting their inner demons. Especially Jessica’s anxiety could be an important aspect of the story. The powered rings are heavily tied to the characters’ emotions. So, they can use this chance to highlight the struggles we face in our own lives.
This is the most info we’ve gotten on the Green Lantern series in some time. Geoff Johns’ MadGhost Productions has also added the upcoming live-action series, so they will most likely be involved alongside Berlanti Productions. It’s currently unclear if fan-favorite characters such as Kyle Rayner, Jon Stewart, and Hal Jordan will make an appearance. It does seem likely they could be saved for a film project, or are introduced in a future season.

It is easy to call Red Guardian a carbon copy of Captain America. It ironically is also the point of his character. The character first appeared in The Avengers #43. Roy Thomas and John Buscema created him as the Soviet’s answer to the iconic American hero. Alexi Alanovich Shostakov was a successful pilot that was presented as a hero by Soviet media. He ended up marrying the famous ballerina, Natasha Romanova. They both started working for the KGB as a result of his acclaims. He was enrolled in a secret mission that was kept top-secret. They told Natasha he had perished in an experimental rocket testing, which would be her inspiration to become the spy we all know and love. Alexi, however, was a changed man after his training. The now much crueler and ruthless person. In a conflict with the Red Chinese, the Russians used the opportunity to test out if their copy could keep up with the original. Many others would take on the mantle. In total, seven people held the Red Guardian title.
Stranger Things‘ David Harbour will portray Alexei Shostakov’s version of the iconic hero. They have changed the roles this time around, as Alexei will act as a father figure rather than her former husband. By the time Natasha returns to Russia, he seems to have been trapped in a Gulag for some time. He also is highlighted as a flawed individual that is trying to get his makeshift family back together. We also get a look at him potentially having some abilities, so he might have the same serum that was used on Winter Soldier. It will be interesting if we explore his history to showcase the parallels between him and Steve Rogers.
M.O.D.O.K. will be gracing Hulu next year with a unique comedy. It will focus on the titular character as he tries to balance his family life as his work at A.I.M. is crumbling. It is a very unique take on the iconic Marvel villain that is sure to offer something new to the superhero genre. Just recently, it was revealed that the series will actually be created through stop-motion by Stoopid Buddy. They are most known for their work on Robot Chicken, so it was uncertain if they would stick to the animation style they are famous for.
Well, Entertainment Weekly revealed the first look at the designs and they look amazing. The human characters do show some of Robot Chicken‘s go-to animation style but the titular character really stands out. The details on M.O.D.O.K.’s design is great with darker outlines highlighting his facial structure. We also get a good look at his family, which will be the main focus of the story.
EW also got the chance to interview co-creator Jason Blum, who highlighted their main inspirations that are pretty apparent when looking at the images.
We’ll see the big battles and the big fights, it’s a huge sci-fi Marvel Universe show, but we thought it would be really funny to see [M.O.D.O.K.] dealing with water cooler gossip at A.I.M. shot in this very handheld style and make it feel like you’re working at AIM alongside him and the same with the family, too. It’s kind of a little inspired by things like Modern Family and The Office where it just makes you feel like you’re part of the group in the show.
They also reveal his main adversary as Austin Van Der Sleet, who is the blond character teased in the second image. M.O.D.O.K. has experience taking on superheroes but faces his biggest enemy, corporate America. A.I.M. is almost bankrupt, so a Google-inspired company named GRUML is trying to acquire their company. At first, it seems like an opportunity for him to focus on his favorite past-times but he also has to attend board meetings and human resources. It’s a clever twist on what one would expect from a show featuring a mental organism designed only for killing. The images are very promising and hopefully may confirm a trailer in the near future.
All things considered, Marvel TV lasting this long is pretty impressive. In their decade-long stint, the division has produced a slew of content, that ranged from spy shows like Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Agent Carter, a surrealist fever dream like Legion, and gritty crime dramas like Daredevil and Jessica Jones. With a wide spectrum of subject matter, one can also expect a wide spectrum of results. Some of these shows ended up being duds while some became critical darlings. But when all was said and done, Marvel TV, for the most part, had something special going on for them.
Sometime last year, it was announced that Disney was dissolving the Marvel Television division as we knew it in favor of producing and streamlining new serialized content under the division’s more successful cousin, Marvel Studios aka the group that makes the movies. This sudden end for the was nothing short of bittersweet as there were a few projects still in development. This year saw the end of the series that started it all, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., with its seventh season and will also mark the final goodbye of Marvel Television with Helstrom, a show based on one of Marvel Comics’ premiere horror characters.
Alas, Marvel TV’s swansong is sadly, a dud, not a complete one but its flaws are more evident than its strengths.
There are great horror properties that aren’t necessarily scary but are well-written just as there are really scary ones that are contrived and awfully written. Helstrom falls in the middle of that category. It’s neither scary nor well-written. It’s a show that brands itself as a horror outing, showcasing possessions, exorcisms, and demons in its marketing material but in actuality, Helstrom itself seems scared of its own supernatural trappings as it refrains from actually giving us the scares. The trailer makes it out to be this action-packed screamfest but those moments are actually few and far in between. In an era where horror is having a resurgence on TV (Netflix’s Haunting of Hill House and Hulu’s new show Monsterland actually give some nice scares), it’s disheartening to see this show miss that mark when the comic and world it’s based is chock full of neat stuff.

I’m a firm believer that comic books can be reinterpreted for the better in their live-action depictions just so as long as it retains the spirit of the source material and in all fairness, Helstrom stays somewhat faithful to the beats of the character’s origins. However, it’s missing one key component of the comic. In the comics, Hellstrom stories were always fun romps against the supernatural. Yes, they dabble into some dark occult stuff but it never loses its flair for making things exciting. The show is far removed from that. Its tone is dreary and takes its own world way too seriously. Visually, it’s lifeless as its colors are muted all throughout. Most importantly, the show is devoid of any excitement and fun.
The problem is that Helstrom doesn’t really get to be what it needs to be and it might be because of Marvel TV itself. Anytime a comic they’re adapting has some semblance of the supernatural and unearthly, it gets diluted to gritty realism. The first season of Iron Fist and the Defenders suffered greatly from the company’s inability to give these elements so intrinsic to the source material any justice and Helstrom suffers as well. Their depictions of the supernatural feel cheap and lackluster. A supposedly scary entity gets undercut by poor design choices. The titular character Daimon Helstrom is such a bombastic character in the comics with all kinds of powers but in the show, it gets relegated to him slightly manipulating fire. I can’t imagine what that Ghost Rider show would’ve looked like if they went through with it.

Just like the Netflix shows, there’s also a good amount of wheel-spinning in this show. I don’t know what it is with Marvel TV shows in general but somehow, they’ve proven time and time again their inability to tell well-paced stories. For example, early in the season, the Helstroms come up with a plan to chase down a possessed man carrying an ancient evil relic. It’s when the show finally kicks in; where the urgency of the matter is of the utmost priority. But what happens in the actual episode? The Helstroms get bottled in a room the entire time, rendering the momentum of the subplot inert. Even more baffling is the next episode when they talk about the chase happening off-screen instead of actually showing it.
And there’s a lot of telling and not showing in Helstrom. In the comics, Daimon Hellstrom’s father is a demon and is a huge part of that entire world. Likewise in the show, they make it seem like the dad is a huge deal. They talk about him a lot, allude to the horrible stuff he’s done, set him up as this major force in the plot but it ends up being weightless for the entire half of the season because we don’t get to see what he’s capable of doing. By the end of my viewing, I was surprised at how little had progressed with the plot and how few the payoffs were in a span of several hours.
Thematically, the show has some interesting stuff to say. Just like Daredevil before it, the show tackles themes of abuse, family, religion, and faith. The Helstrom family is a really screwed up one and the show does a neat job of having the three family members deal with trauma and abuse distinctly from one another. In addition to those themes, Helstrom brings up some interesting questions about morality and necessary evils, in ways that the other Marvel TV shows haven’t explored much. The show features The Blood, a clandestine organization that puts possessed people in comas as a way to end the futile cycle of exorcisms which I thought was a nice layer of depth.
Elizabeth Marvel (Victoria Helstrom) Credit: Katie Yu/Hulu
For whatever reason, the Marvel brand has been mostly wiped clean from the show that even the iconic page flip intro is nowhere to be found which made fans question just how invested the company is in this show. So it is a bit ironic that the number one saving grace on the show is the star that happens to have Marvel as her last name, Elizabeth Marvel. Anytime Elizabeth Marvel shows up on the screen, the show gets exponentially better. Marvel brings so much weight and darkness to the character of Victoria Helstrom, a woman perpetually at war with literal demons in her head. Marvel straddles the line between sinister and tender so brilliantly; when she’s possessed, it’s genuinely unsettling; when you see her be a mom to Ana and Daimon, it’s heartwarming.
The rest of the ensemble does a bang-up job keeping an otherwise bland show watchable. Tom Austen brings a nice delicate swagger to the titular role of Daimon Helstrom though I wish the writers gave this version of the character some of the idiosyncrasies and quirks of Hellstrom in the comics just so Austen has more to do. He clearly has the chops to give a more intense and pronounced performance but the writing, unfortunately, doesn’t give room for it. Sydney Lemmon plays a fantastic foil to Austen as Daimon’s sister, Ana. Between the two siblings, Ana has the more interesting character arc and Lemmon’s icy yet tortured performance helps elevate it. Robert Wisdom, who I absolutely adored in The Wire, is Caretaker, who in the comics is like the Nick Fury of this supernatural pocket of the Marvel Universe. Wisdom plays the character with a gravitas and dignity that commands every scene he’s in.
Even with a talented ensemble cast, Helstrom is bogged down by the same things that plagued several of their shows. It’s a mishmash of neat ideas here and there but ultimately doesn’t come together in a compelling way. It isn’t outright bad like Inhumans nor is it must-watch television like Daredevil. You won’t be missing out on much if you skip this one.
So, the wait for any content has been truly harsh. I am enjoying the game quite a bit but have been taken more frequent breaks. I even broke down the reasoning and importance of this with these types of games in a journal entry you can check out by clicking here. We were anxiously waiting for an update this week but didn’t even get our weekly War Table blog entry. It is understandable that many are frustrated with the lack of content that was promised post-launch. Thankfully, Kotaku got an official statement by Crystal Dynamics studio head Scot Amos. It’s a refreshing article to read. Instead of just posting it directly, I would like to tackle some aspects that stand out. Let’s start off with the promise of brand new mission types and the first Raid event.
As such, we have a number of new content pieces coming in the weeks ahead including: a totally new War Zone mission type called Tachyon Rifts, a new Outpost that’s a jumping off point for new story missions in the future, and AIM’s Cloning Lab, which requires a coordinated high-level group of four players to beat with new top-end loot rewards for finishing it. And in each of these updates we do tuning and bug fixing to enhance the overall experience.
The AIM Cloning Lab, or Secret Lab, has been teased since before the launch. They have postponed its launch most likely to focus on fixing the matchmaking issues that plague the PC port. Forbes’ Paul Tassi shared an interesting article on the topic with the active low-numbers on Steam not helping the matter. I do believe once they start offering a consistent flow of content players will gradually return. They just sadly dragged it out for too long. The Tachyon Rifts do sound like a promising addition with a story building towards the larger content drop with the first character additions.
In addition, we’ve announced two new Heroes coming in the near future: Kate Bishop in Operation: Taking AIM, and after that the double-feature Operation starring Clint Barton… this is the “two Hawkeyes” we mentioned in the last War Table. These new Operations pick up right from where the main Reassemble campaign ended in the core game and will propel the overall world story forward with new mysteries and villains, as well as new multi-player content.
They are teasing some interesting additions plus new villains. Right now, the selection is rather scarce with two Warbots, Abomination and Taskmaster. This gets pretty redundant after a few weeks, as the core gameplay of these fights doesn’t really change much – only the environment does. They do add that more content will be added throughout the next few months, so hopefully, next week’s blog will offer more details. We’ve been waiting for a roadmap that was promised since the last War Table video, so they promise a bigger update next week
Our biggest issue sadly has been the decrease in communication. At first, they were actively sharing information and pointing aspects out but that seems to have calmed down quite a bit in recent weeks. It looks like they may have been strategizing something, as they promise new community communication initiatives moving forward.
We’ll have more information and details about the very near content drops in a blog scheduled for next week and we have new community communication initiatives coming soon to even more directly share fun and useful information with you.
So, this is something I think many of us were hoping to hear. It could mean that Crystal Dynamics is trying to find better ways to communicate with its audience. I will say though it is odd that they didn’t share this on Twitter or in their Discord. It seems like a PR move, which is great to see. They are trying to get general info out there about them working hard on the game. Something, we haven’t really seen from others. Of course, they did miss out on using this chance to share it with their community directly which is a missed opportunity. Still, this is a big step forward for Crystal Dynamics and Marvel’s Avengers. They even acknowledge that they are losing their player base. No matter where one stands, this is a big step. I believe that if they keep their word and release the info on upcoming updates next week, we could see an upswing. The important thing is, they can’t drag this out forever and need to start pumping out consistent updates to keep players. Still, I always like to be positive and I cannot wait to share whatever info we get next week with you!
Today, The Walt Disney Company has officially announced that the upcoming Disney/Pixar animated film; Soul, will be premiering exclusively on Disney+ this Christmas Day. The film will be released theatrically wherever Disney+ is coming soon or not available by Christmas Day.
“Soul” introduces Joe Gardner (voice of Jamie Foxx) – a middle-school band teacher who gets the chance of a lifetime to play at the best jazz club in town. But one small misstep takes him from the streets of New York City to The Great Before – a fantastical place where new souls get their personalities, quirks and interests before they go to Earth. Determined to return to his life, Joe teams up with a precocious soul, 22 (voice of Tina Fey), who has never understood the appeal of the human experience. As Joe desperately tries to show 22 what’s great about living, he may just discover the answers to some of life’s most important questions.
Amazon Prime has had a fantastic year with its superhero content. The Boys had a very successful second season and is already entering production for its third. Now, they are adding a brand new superhero-based series in the form of Invincible. The series is currently eyeing a 2021 release with no official release date named. It is based on Robert Kirkman‘s comic of the same name, which concluded in February 2018. After a long wait, we finally got our hands on the first trailer, which teases the father-son dynamic between Mark Grayson and his father.
We also got our first series synopsis, which teases the dark history of Omni-Man and what will be at the center of this story:
Invincible is an adult animated superhero show that revolves around 17-year-old Mark Grayson (Steven Yeun), who’s just like every other guy his age — except that his father is the most powerful superhero on the planet, Omni-Man (J.K. Simmons). But as Mark develops powers of his own, he discovers that his father’s legacy may not be as heroic as it seems.
This series has quite the amazing cast lined-up. In addition to the our father-son duo, it also includes Sandra Oh, Seth Rogen, Zazie Beetz, Mark Hamill, Walton Goggins, Chris Diamantopoulos, Jason Mantzoukas and many more. The series is being produced by Skybound with Kirkman, Simon Racioppa, David Alpert, and Catherine Winder acting as executive producers. Amazon Prime is also the perfect place for a superhero show trying to tap into darker themes. It can build on the success of The Boys and fill the void left while everyone waits for the third season. Invincible is a promising addition to their streaming library and can offer another refreshing story at a world filled with superheroes.
