  • Zazie Beetz Plays Coy on Possible ‘Deadpool 3’ Return

Zazie Beetz Plays Coy on Possible ‘Deadpool 3’ Return

Zazie Beetz left her mark on the Marvel franchise when she appeared in Deadpool 2. The Atlanta actress portrayed Domino, a mutant mercenary and longtime comic book affiliate of Wade Wilson, in the well-received sequel project. She was introduced to the franchise alongside Josh Brolin‘s Cable, and before the merger of 20th Century Fox and Disney, many fans expected Beetz to reprise her role in the trilogy’s third installment. Now, with Deadpool 3 being part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, pretty much everything aside from Ryan Reynolds‘ involvement is up in the air.

Speaking with Variety at the premiere of her new film Bullet Train, Beetz was asked to comment on her potential future as Domino in Deadpool 3. Of course, the actress couldn’t really confirm anything, but her response felt far from an actual denial:

It’s unknown how much of the Deadpool series’ storyline will carry over into the MCU, especially considering the concept of mutants is only just being realized in the franchise timeline. Luckily, Deadpool 3 could possibly fall within the ongoing “Multiverse Saga”, which would leave several doors open for performers like Beetz and Reynolds to enter the MCU from another dimension. After all, Domino does operate using the power to manipulate luck, so it’s entirely plausible that she has a hand in landing herself and the Merc with a Mouth in the multiverse’s most popular timeline.

Deadpool 3 will be directed by Shawn Levy, from a script by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, and currently has no release date.

  • ‘Deadpool 2’ Director Explains Why He Didn’t Return for the MCU Sequel

‘Deadpool 2’ Director Explains Why He Didn’t Return for the MCU Sequel

David Leitch has made a name for himself in Hollywood. The former stunt man-turned-director is gearing up for his latest action film, Bullet Train, to hit theaters this weekend, and spoke to Uproxx about the many projects that have brought him to where he is today. After co-directing the first John Wick with Chad Stahelski, Leitch carved his own path and made more action hits with films like Atomic Blonde and the Fast & Furious spin-off Hobbs & Shaw. Perhaps his most popular work, however, is 2018’s sequel Deadpool 2, which he boarded after the first film’s maestro, Tim Miller, departed over creative differences.

Curiously, Leitch has never returned to a franchise after working on it once. This could change in the future, but for now, the director explained to Uproxx that it’s almost entirely circumstantial:

It’s probably more of what I’m doing and some circumstance. I love all of those worlds, and they’re all precious to me. Starting with John Wick. Chad has taken over that franchise and executed it beautifully. And Deadpool is amazing. And Atomic Blonde, I would love to go back. When I look back, I would love to go back to those worlds, but I think the way it’s worked out for me, or fate has brought me to this place, is that I get new opportunities and they’re really awesome, interesting, as well. Now moving on and doing The Fall Guy with Gosling, we’re prepping right now.

    David Leitch

When asked if his upcoming production of The Fall Guy played a role in his not coming back for Marvel Studios’ upcoming Deadpool 3, Leitch made it clear this was not the case. In fact, the creative revealed he had actually spoken to Marvel about another Deadpool adventure, but simply couldn’t find the right window to make it happen between the studio and himself:

No. Look, we had conversations about Deadpool 3, but I just was … I had things in the pipeline, too. And it was never, “Hey, do you want to do it or not want to do it?” or whatever. I think it was more we knew our dance cards were kind of full on both sides. And we have a window. And Marvel has calendars.

    David Leitch

Deadpool 3 will be helmed instead by Ryan Reynolds‘ frequent collaborative partner Shawn Levy. There is not currently a release date, but fans can check out Leitch‘s Brad Pitt-starring Bullet Train on August 5th.

  • Tenoch Huerta Teases Namor Has “Deep Admiration” For Chadwick Boseman’s T’Challa

Tenoch Huerta Teases Namor Has “Deep Admiration” For Chadwick Boseman’s T’Challa

Tenoch Huerta is about to have his moment. The actor is set to debut as Namor the Sub-Mariner in this year’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, a role that will likely propel him into mainstream fame, but Huerta‘s mind is still focused on those who came before him. In an interview with Black Girl Nerds, the former Narcos: Mexico star explained that both himself and his character have a deep admiration for the late Chadwick Boseman‘s King T’Challa:

Well, my character, and personally, it is fun, because my character has a deep admiration for Black Panther… T’Challa… But, me as an actor and as a simple human being, what Chadwick means: so powerful, so deep, it’s extraordinary. And it’s… Yeah, it’s a big inspiration.

    Tenoch Huerta

Boseman passed away after a courageous battle with cancer in 2020, leaving a big hole to fill in Wakanda Forever. Namor, ruler of a fictional undersea nation, will help fill the void, but as Huerta states beautifully, nobody will ever truly replace Boseman‘s impact on the franchise or the world at large:

So, in different levels, in the fiction and the real life, [to] be part of this and feel his presence… through the legacy, through the people who [were] involved in this project is fantastic. As I mentioned a moment before, it’s like his shadow is in the wall. So you line the shadow, and then you put a lot of colors, and music, and love, and you are part of that because it’s your colors as well. You know, your culture, your music is there, and it’s beautiful [to] be part of that, you know what I mean?

    Tenoch Huerta

It seems Huerta enjoyed his time working on the film, and his comments continue to solidify the idea that the Black Panther sequel will still very much involve Boseman‘s influence. In the comics, Namor and T’Challa have a longstanding relationship that’s been both friendly and volatile at different points in time. This dynamic will unfortunately not be realized on the big screen, but the door is wide open for whoever ends up donning the Black Panther mantle to craft a new form of rivalry with the Sub-Mariner.

  • HBO Max Removes 6 Original Warner Bros. Films

HBO Max Removes 6 Original Warner Bros. Films

It would appear Warner Bros. Discovery is not done cutting movies yet. Variety is reporting that the company has been quietly removing content from its popular streaming service HBO Max, including at least six films that had been released on the platform as exclusive “HBO Max Originals”.

The culled projects consist of Moonshot, a sci-fi rom-com starring Lana Condor and Cole Sprouse that dropped only a few months ago; Superintelligence, a dystopian rom-com from Melissa McCarthy and husband Ben Falcone; An American Pickle, a Seth Rogan comedy that stars the actor in a duel-role; The Witches, a 2020 remake of the Roald Dahl classic, directed by Robert Zemeckis with an all-star cast of Anne Hathaway, Octavia Spencer, Stanley Tucci, and Chris Rock; Locked Down, a Doug Liman heist film with Chiwetel Ejiofor and Hathaway; and finally, Charm City Kings, a drama from Angel Manuel Soto.

The removals appear to have been made in an effort to cut costs, and were first discovered by users of Reddit after Warner Bros.’ controversial cancellations of Batgirl and Scoob!: Holiday Haunt on Tuesday. Also noted, the reboot of cult classic comedy House Party, which was set to be produced by LeBron James and Maverick Carter‘s SpringHill, has been scrubbed from HBO Max’s release calendar. It was previously expected to drop on July 28th. As mentioned by Variety, it’s not an unusual practice for streaming services to take films on and off of their catalog.

However, it is strange that the company would remove films produced specifically for distribution on HBO Max, including Moonshot, which has only been out in the wild for about three months, and that the changes would be made without any sort of announcement. It remains to be seen if these now-unwatchable projects ever see the light of day again.

  • REVIEW: ‘Prey’ is Beautiful, Brutal, and Stunningly Good

REVIEW: ‘Prey’ is Beautiful, Brutal, and Stunningly Good

It’s been said that, after killing their prey, a hunter should use every part of the body. The meat is obviously for feasting, the hide can be used for clothing or shelter, and the bones can be fashioned into weapons and tools. A life is taken, but it’s done so with reasonable intent. It’s an elegant trade-off for a harsh reality, that sometimes something must die for something else to live. The thing is, Prey is not a movie about hunters. It’s about Predators, and they only kill for a single goal – the spine and the skull attached to it. They want a trophy to bring back to their tribe, so that everyone may know they’re the apex in the wild. It’s this dichotomy between those who hunt with honor and those who hunt for honor that makes Prey such a force to be reckoned with. And the really, really cool death scenes don’t hurt either.

To be clear, Prey is the latest entry in the decades-old Predator franchise. Yet, somehow, it feels like something entirely brand new. A prequel set in 1719, away from the complicated timeline muddled by 2018’s The Predator, director Dan Trachtenberg has crafted an incredibly fresh take on a series that was beginning to come off as a bit stale. The recipe for success starts with the title, which is indicative of the way Trachtenberg and writer Patrick Aison flip the story’s usual structure on its head. In Prey, a young Comanche woman defies the gender norms of the Great Plains, and embarks on the hunt of a lifetime to prove she’s the best warrior her people have to offer. Although, contrary to what many may have assumed, Prey does not refer to Amber Midthunder‘s assertive lead. Every installment in the franchise thus far has utilized the Predator as its title character, and this project is no exception.

Fans have seen variations on this concept before, with the final human survivor turning the tables and facing the Predator head-on, but it’s never been executed quite like this. Naru, the protagonist, is the focus from the very start, with the film only picking up on the Predator’s activities to confirm it’s still somewhere on the prowl. In fact, at almost no point in the film is the Predator ever actually hunting Naru. She is on her own journey, running parallel to the beast’s increasingly destructive murder spree, hell-bent on emerging from their inevitable clash the victor. Much like the Predator itself, Naru knows the only way to prove herself is to return home with a trophy unlike anything her people have seen. She craves defeating the apex so she can become the apex. Prey introduces audiences to a different kind of predator, and in the process, dares to ask where man falls on the Venn diagram between glory and integrity. This is a violent, engaging coming-of-age tale that just so happens to feature an iconic extraterrestrial killing machine as its main foil.

Fear not, however, as the Predator itself is still given plenty of time to leave its mark. Trachtenberg manages to design some of the best kills the franchise has ever produced. There were multiple sequences that should probably elicit a discussion as to whether or not New Line Cinema could still let the filmmaker take over their Mortal Kombat fold. It feels almost grotesque to say that the violence in Prey is borderline beautiful, especially in light of recent world events, but it absolutely is. Actually, it’s worth stating that the entire project is a spectacle, shot to perfection by cinematographer Jeff Cutter. It’s a shame this film won’t be released in theaters because so much of it is exactly the kind of experience everyone hopes to have at the movies.

Propped against the breathtaking backdrop of the vast American wilderness, Prey might also use its setting better than any Predator film before it. The movie expertly uses a variety of natural predators, the kind often found in stories of the frontier, as a means of building tension throughout its first two acts. With tricky camera angles and creative framing, viewers can never be certain exactly what it is they’re watching creep through the trees, and it almost always leads to a satisfying payoff when whatever is lurking finally emerges to attempt a fatal strike. This also goes for the time period itself, which offers all sorts of adversity for Naru, in the form of both people and culture, as she fights her way towards dominance. It makes the deaths, and the survivals, seem far more rewarding. Arnold Schwarzenegger may have taken down a Predator, but he never had to worry about much else while doing it.

It’s difficult to put into words the energy this movie brings with it, but the most accurate sentiment may be this – it absolutely rips. The Urban Dictionary exemplifies this phrasing as, “when a dog runs laps around the yard, typically at full speed, and it’s highly entertaining to watch.” Watching Prey is like watching a dog run laps at full speed, only the dog is an alien killer and the laps are swift, brutal, stunning kills. The only way it could possibly be better were if it had a well-constructed, thematic story to go with it. Luckily, it does. Every Predator film has promised to be what this one actually delivers, which is why Prey is probably the best of the bunch, a must-watch for anyone who loves movies.

  • Netflix Has Canceled ‘First Kill’ After One Season

Netflix Has Canceled ‘First Kill’ After One Season

Fans have been anxiously awaiting a renewal decision regarding First Kill. Unfortunately, though, for fans of the young adult vampire drama, the series is not coming back for a second season. The news was revealed by Deadline late on Tuesday evening, although a reason for the cancellation was not revealed.

First Kill was based on a short story by bestselling author Victoria “V. E.” Schwab and was often compared to Buffy the Vampire Slayer upon its launch because of its concept. The series, however, had a bit of a twist as this time around the series put LGBTQ+ characters front and center. Felicia D. Henderson, who worked on shows like Fringe and The Punisher, wrote for the series and served as the showrunner, also executive produced the series alongside Schwab. Actress Emma Roberts also served as a producer on the series.

The series focused on a teenage vampire named Juliette Fairmont, played by Sarah Catherine Hook, and a new girl in town named Calliope, played by Imani Lewis. Much like with Buffy, the series focused on a forbidden love story between Juliette and Calliope, who just so happened to be a hunter. The show follows them as their forbidden love also forces them to address their first kills and the consequences that come with it all.

News of the show’s cancellation is surprising in that it has proven to generate plenty of buzz on social media. Fans have been campaigning for the show’s renewal on Twitter for weeks now, responding to random tweets on Netflix’s account calling for First Kill to come back. With Season 1 ending on a massive cliffhanger, it’s doubtful fans will ever get a satisfying conclusion to the series on the small screen.

The entire first – and only – season of First Kill is now streaming on Netflix.

  • ‘Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order’ Star Plays Coy on Potential Live-Action Appearance

‘Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order’ Star Plays Coy on Potential Live-Action Appearance

If there ever was a rumor that followed almost every Star Wars Disney+ project it was that Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order‘s Cal Kestis would make his live-action appearance at one point. Obi-Wan Kenobi was the latest project where the rumors seemed to have heavily tried to make the case that Cameron Monaghan would make Kestis’ live-action debut in some project in the near future. Luckily, Screen Rant got a chance to sit down with the actor where he potentially teased that something is brewing.

In the interview, he doesn’t say that he’s attached to any project but that there’s definitely an interest. With Jedi Survivor on the horizon, a direct sequel to the iconic game by Respawn Studios, it does seem like a potential appearance is something that was discussed, especially with how Monaghan plays coy on “that’s about all I can say” on any future appearances.

Well, of course there’s interest. That’s about all I can say.”

    Cameron Monaghan

A live-action appearance of Cal Kestis would be quite interesting, especially if they plan to make it part of the canon of the games. It might be a little tough to play around with where he fits into the Star Wars timeline with the sequel not acknowledging the events that unfolded. Andor is on the horizon and we could see him in the back as it takes place before A New Hope, but it would potentially just add more questions than answers that the appearance could otherwise provide. With no clear plans, we can only theorize for now.

  • John Boyega Denies Any Marvel Rumors, No Interested in Joining the Franchise Currently

John Boyega Denies Any Marvel Rumors, No Interested in Joining the Franchise Currently

At this point, it’s hard to deny that almost any big-name actor has had at least one or two rumors hinting at them joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe. If they may be real or not, it’s one of the most prolific franchises in the industry, and its continued rise even as it’s facing a sophomore slump in Phase 4 should not be downplayed. Among the many rumored is John Boyega, who has now openly denied any rumors surrounding him having been secretly cast in a role.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, he reveals that he’s had enough of big-budget projects after his work on the Sequel trilogy of Star Wars, and is focusing on more “nuanced” projects. He also makes a good point on the weight of joining any project comes in the shadow of Iron Man which became a big part linking the projects for years.

That’s not in the vision for me now. I want to do nuanced things. I want to donate my services to original indie films that come with new, fresh ideas, because I know it’s real hard to top Iron Man in that universe.

    John Boyega

There will always be rumors and likely some not believing Boyega‘s own statements in regards to his approach to future projects Still, it seems that the actor wants to return to his roots and has gone through enough with the weight that Star Wars already put on his shoulders; especially the fan reactions. It’ll be exciting to see what his next project will turn out to be.

  • ‘Scoob!’ Christmas Special Secretly Scrapped Alongside ‘Batgirl’ to Cut Costs

‘Scoob!’ Christmas Special Secretly Scrapped Alongside ‘Batgirl’ to Cut Costs

The rather shocking news dropped recently that Batgirl was shelved. While reasonings were uncertain, a new report by The Hollywood Reporter hints that the reasoning is part of the new Warner Bros. Discovery CEO, David Zaslav, and his strategy on cost-cutting measures. He wants to focus more on creating theatrical films rather than streaming but it seems that it’s coming at a rather heavy toll.

Not only did they scrap the $90M budgeted and finished Batgirl, but they also decided to shelve their animation project, Scoob! Holiday Haunt. The animated holiday special was already in some form of production and seemingly had invested $40M. Supposedly, the reasoning is due to their strategy of avoiding big-budget projects for HBO Max and focusing on a theatrical release.

What doesn’t make sense is the concept of filming an entire project only to scrap it. It also raises questions if other productions that are already in some form of development could be on the chopping block next. The idea to never bank on $130M worth of productions and not even just using a minimal marketing strategy to wrap up productions at a decent cost efficiency to draw out any benefit is quite surprising.

Zaslav never was going to be the one to save the production company, and its uncertainty if the recent announcement of adding Alan Horn, former Disney creative officer, will make any changes if they are swiftly taking down projects. Our best case scenario would be if they pivot their productions and create a stronger focus, but it could also potentially go down a much darker route with uncertainty hanging over future productions.

  • ‘Stranger Things’ Writing Team Share BTS Image as Work Starts on the Final Season

‘Stranger Things’ Writing Team Share BTS Image as Work Starts on the Final Season

It looks like work on the final season of Stranger Things has finally begun. While it confirms that the wait for its release is going to be a long one, it’s great to know that we’re finally seeing some development on the project. The Russo Brothers have quite a few plans ahead of them with a spinoff and even a Harry Potter-style project heading out as a musical. Their Upside Down Studios will be busy but that doesn’t mean the focus won’t remain on their flagship franchise.

Netflix is definitely on board for the project, and luckily with this first image, we know that writing has started on the fifth and final season of Stranger Things. Sadly, they won’t give us a look at what they are writing down for the project but here’s hoping we get some ongoing updates that tease whatever the ending of the last episode gives us.

It’s a bit hard to make out who is part of the writing team but they are likely to have many from the previous one back in action. With the Upside Down finally unleashed into the real world, Vecna is ready to unleash his final plan and do whatever it is that an evil man does. The wait will be tough but at least it gives us time to listen to “Running Up That Hill” or “Masters of Puppets” on repeat for as long as possible until the next major 80s hit grabs our hearts.
