  • ‘The Umbrella Academy’ Wasted The Sparrows

‘The Umbrella Academy’ Wasted The Sparrows

When the second season of The Umbrella Academy came to a close, fans were left on the edge of their seats as they’d believe the Hargeeves siblings had escaped the apocalypse that had brought them into the 1960s. Upon their return to what they thought to be their childhood home, the Hargeeves siblings were met with confusion. After all, their father Reginald Hargeeves, whose death brought the family back together in Season 1, was now alive and well. As it turned out, though, this Reginald was not their father. The place they’d thought to be their home was actually none other than the Sparrow Academy. The end of the season gave fans a glimpse at the Ben of their timeline, as well as silhouettes of the Sparrows.

With the tease of the Sparrows, fans were thrilled at what Season 3 might have in store. After all, it was a brand new mystery featuring a new set of mysteriously powered children born on Oct. 1st, 1989. As the Sparrows are the children that Reginald was unable to get in the original timeline, Season 3 seemed full of promise and quickly proved it would be unable to handle this new ground of characters as evident by Marcus being wiped from existence by episode’s end,

The show begins quickly doing away with many of the Sparrows as quick as they can, spacing it out so that it does not seem like they really want them gone. Marcus was the one member that actually showed some development as he was willing to work with the Umbrellas to try and fix what was going on, but the show didn’t seem to have someone else taking up precious screen time from any of the Umbrellas. Sure, his powers weren’t all that interesting, as he had similar abilities to Luther, minus the gorilla DNA that malformed Luther’s body.

Perhaps the biggest issue with many of the characters is how one-note most of them feel. In fact, many of them don’t get much development besides Ben and Sloane, with Ben constantly bumping back and forth like the writers weren’t fully committed to what they wanted to do with this new version of a previously beloved character. Alphonso , Fei, and Jayme are kind of just there to serve as the muscle and never really expanding behind that. We even see that, at one point, Alphonso is not as deformed as he once was, but the show does little to elaborate on that. This is in no way on the actors and actresses, as they all look great and do the best that they can with what they’ve been given.

Christopher was probably the biggest misfire of the season. Of course, he is a living flesh cube, but no one ever cares to ask why and the show doesn’t care to make any explanations. In some ways, it works, as none of them really give it a second thought after all the crazy shit they’ve all seen the past few days. That doesn’t excuse that he is solely used as a plot device here and there in the season.

Now of course, it is The Umbrella Academy and not The Sparrow Academy, so naturally, the focus would still remain on the main characters. However, it felt like such a major cop out with the Sparrows. The characters were hyped, and we were led to believe they’d be the main antagonists of the next season. Instead, they decided to completely pivot from what could’ve been a unique entry in the series with yet another apocalypse to try and fix.

  • Netflix Adds Fan-Favorite ‘Spectacular Spider-Man’ Animated series

Netflix Adds Fan-Favorite ‘Spectacular Spider-Man’ Animated series

We’ve been enjoying a splurge of great Spider-Man films with No Way Home breaking records even during the pandemic. Yet, many also fondly remember some of his greatest hits like the animated series like The Spectacular Spider-Man, which sadly ended a little too early due to the rights issues between Sony and Marvel. Now, the fan-favorite series created by Greg Weisman (Gargoyles) and Victor Cook (Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated) may find a second life as it’s been added to Netflix.

Luckily, they’ve added both seasons for those hoping to give it another shot. It should be noted that the project is likely part of Sony’s long-term deal with Netflix which they’ll add to their library. We’ve recently seen some of the classic Spider-Man films join Disney+, which were on the Netflix streamer for quite some time. So, we might have to wait a few years and it could also find its way to a Disney-owned streamer.

One of the things that made Spectacular Spider-Man so special was how it balanced the more personal life of Peter Parker with his time as a hero. It also was a series that didn’t shy away from Peter’s darker side and let him face the consequences of his own actions in a story that continued to evolve over time. Some people are hoping that its addition to Netflix may spark interest in reviving the project similar to how others were given a second life through their popularity on streaming services. So, we’ll see if there’s a future for this project to return after all.

  • ‘Blue Beetle’ Set Photos Offer First Look at Kord Industries

‘Blue Beetle’ Set Photos Offer First Look at Kord Industries

Blue Beetle has been busy filming for some time, as we got our first look at how they’ll adapt his iconic design in live-action some time ago. Things have calmed down since the project but it looks like a new group of set photos shared by Twitter user @DcversoMidias have offered a new look at what’s to come in the film. While it’s not a new look at our heroic Blue Beetle, it is our first look at Kord Industries. Not only do we get a first look at the company’s logo but also what seems to be a station built by or for the company.

That is not all, as it seems that Kord Industries is not just all about clean energy development but also offers a hotel of some kind. An additional billboard includes the names of famous DC cities, Central City, Gotham, Metropolis, and more

It’ll be interesting to see how Kord Industries will connect to the overarching storyline, especially as we don’t know if the former Blue Beetle will also have a role in the film. There was once a rumor making the rounds on Jason Sudeikis playing the character, which ended up getting quickly denied. So, we’ll see what the project has in store for us once we see more from the set or even the first trailer drop at some point in the future.

  • Major ‘The Boys’ Actor Will Play New Character in Season 4

Major ‘The Boys’ Actor Will Play New Character in Season 4

The latest season finale for The Boys was all sorts of messed up, but there was one moment in particular that likely shocked viewers more than others. After spending the majority of Season 3 in hiding from Jensen Ackles’ Soldier Boy, fan favorite baddie Black Noir finally worked up the courage to confront his demons and return to Vought Tower. Unfortunately, his reunion with Toni Starr’s Homelander didn’t go exactly as planned, and the silent menace instead found himself violently gutted on the tower floor. Black Noir’s sudden death was as surprising as it was gruesome, with the move coming as soon as the show had finally begun to reveal the character’s tragic backstory. The decision to kill Noir off also deprived fans of their chance to see him face off against his former Payback captain in an epic final showdown.

Luckily for Nate Mitchell, the stunt man who spent three seasons behind the mask, Noir’s death will apparently not be the end of his time on the show. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, showrunner Eric Kripke revealed that Mitchell would return as an entirely new version of Black Noir for The Boys’ upcoming fourth batch of episodes. After teasing playfully that a character who “is completely silent and in a black mask can be recast”, the former Supernatural creative explained that Season 4 will feature a brand new character donning the infamous all-black ensemble:

It’s definitely not the last we’ve seen of Black Noir as a hero. It’s just that the guy who was inside [the Noir suit] in season 3, he’s gone. But we have Nathan playing a really interesting and hilarious character who wears the suit next season. We’ll explore it as the season goes on, but Nathan plays a whole new character.

    Eric Kripke

Kripke says he broke the news to Mitchell before filming on Season 3 began, hoping it would ease his pain of losing the original Noir interpretation. This decision was also why a different actor, Fritzy-Klevans Destine, was brought in for flashback scenes involving a speaking, maskless Noir. This way, things will be less confusing when Mitchell’s face is shown as someone else in Season 4.

The entirety of The Boys is now streaming on Amazon Prime.

  • Newly Leaked ‘She-Hulk’ Promo Offers First Full Look at Comic-Inspired Outfit

Newly Leaked ‘She-Hulk’ Promo Offers First Full Look at Comic-Inspired Outfit

We’ve gotten quite a few looks at the upcoming series She-hulk, which will see Tatiana Maslany take on the role of Bruce Banner’s cousin, Jennifer Walters. While we already had a trailer, Marvel and Disney have been quite coy about showing the full design for the character’s comic-inspired design. We did get a glimpse through some promo art, but a new set as shared by @MCU_Facility may have given us our best look yet at what her full design will look like.

It’ll be interesting to see what the design looks like in live-action but there’s an interesting design concept going on here. The visuals are much more flashy and might be used to highlight her home to also add some color instead of just going with a simple lawyer concept. The last version of the logo seemingly jumped into that direction before they shifted gears once again.

With some time before the series releases and we’re anxiously awaiting a second trailer that shows how far the CG has gone since the first reveal. Corridor Digital has recently highlighted the quality of the work done on the character, especially in contrast to how the internet has reacted. So, we’ll see how much legwork the second trailer is going to have to make up for.

  • ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ Nabs B+ CinemaScore, Same as ‘Doctor Strange 2’

‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ Nabs B+ CinemaScore, Same as ‘Doctor Strange 2’

The CinemaScore has finally arrived, which mostly reflects how the general audience feels about a film’s release. Unlike normal ratings, the films are mostly skewed heavily with A being the general goal for any release. Marvel Studios famously stuck around to this area as a “crowd-pleasing” offering but that has changed with Phase 4. Some of their releases have landed the B rating, most notably Eternals being the first to do so. Thor in 2011 also received a B+ rating. Now, Thor: Love and Thunder has also joined the B+ club.

CinemaScore has just released the fact that the general audience has given Thor: Love and Thunder a B+ grade. Now, the internet is already in a panic about this being the sign that Marvel Studios has lost its grace with the general audience, but there’s a lot more at play with this rating. Yes, it is normally a higher rating, anything with a C+, such as Morbius, is a sign that the film may not leg out

Yet, considering that the film currently holds an 84% like ratio from Google Users, stands at 7.1 on IMDb, and even has an 83% Audience Score on RottenTomatoes, you start to see the bigger picture. The only indication this value has is a hint at the legs a film will have at the box office, and if Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is anything to go by, a B+ won’t stop it too much. Yes, it won’t have the same momentum that could push it past its initial release but we may see a harsh drop in the second weekend.

Also, most indie releases end up in this ranking, which generally is a sign of how audiences consume media. If it is mindless fun, they’ll tend to give it a higher ranking and Marvel Studios still has an A ranking for films like Shang-Chi, Black Widow, and especially Spider-Man: No Way Home. Plus, the lowest ranking films also include strong horror and gore elements, such as Doctor Strange with Love and Thunder also includes some “bloody-esque” kills plus LGTB representation that is more dominant than a blink-and-you-miss-it kiss like in Lightyear. And if we want Marvel Studios to experiment (as has been proclaimed by many over the years), they will face a slight disconnect with general audiences at times.

  • ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’: Post-Credits Scenes Explained

‘Thor: Love and Thunder’: Post-Credits Scenes Explained

Marvel Studios has returned with another movie, which means another round of exciting post-credits scenes that fans can theorize on for years to come. Thor: Love and Thunder, like many of the Marvel Cinematic Universe films before it, features two extra tags at the end of it’s runtime. The first of these teases continues the tradition of introducing surprising new characters after the credits roll, while the second brings back a familiar face to put a nice little bow on the fourth Thor story. As always, there’s quite a bit to break down, so sit back and relax your brain while we do the work and explain what exactly is going on in those signature Marvel stingers.

    Enter: Hercules

Well, if you’ve made it this far, you probably already know that Brett Goldstein is Marvel’s Hercules. About halfway through Love and Thunder‘s credits, the Ted Lasso star pops up as the Greek Prince of Power in a surprise reveal. The scene acts as a continuation of an earlier sequence in the movie where Chris Hemsworth‘s Thor confronts Russell Crowe‘s Zeus for refusing to act on the rise of Gorr the God Butcher, a conversation that would ultimately result in Zeus’ very public humiliation in Omnipotence City. After the chat between both Thunder Gods turns sour, a physical conflict begins, and Thor’s best buddy Korg is seemingly struck down by Zeus’ powerful lightning bolt. Korg turns out to be alive, but that doesn’t stop an enraged Thor from catching Zeus’ next bolt and chucking it right back to where it came from. The bolt goes through Zeus’ chest, and the renowned leader topples silently from his regal perch.

The mid-credits scene lets the audience know that Zeus is not dead, but is instead plotting his revenge on Thor while recovering from his wound. To do this, he enlists the aid of his son, Hercules. Following a dramatic monologue in which Zeus laments the lack of fear modern mortals have for gods, he asks Hercules to find Thor and prove that the gods are still a force to be reckoned with. The camera then cuts to Goldstein standing up in full comic book Hercules attire, complete with flowing chest hair and his fun little club weapon.

The character has long been rumored to be making his MCU debut in Phase Four, and Love and Thunder was such a perfect place for the entrance to happen it’s almost shocking it didn’t occur in the main story. In the comics, Hercules has encountered Thor many times, at first as an enemy but eventually as a longtime friend. When the two first meet, Thor is searching for Olympus alongside his brother Loki on a mission of peace, but Hercules’ natural desire to prove his strength leads to initial conflict. In fact, the concept of Herc and Thor duking it out to prove who is stronger would become a recurring thread in their relationship. Despite actually becoming quick pals, a friendly rivalry would remain for the rest of their days. As Herc himself would eventually say in Tony Isabella‘s Champions #1; “Whatever Thor canst do – Hercules can accomplish more mightily!

The MCU’s introduction of the character implies a potential Thor 5 plot might revolve around Hercules and the Greek gods clashing with Thor and his Asgardian comrades. However, as previously mentioned, these two entities are often more in line with each other than they are in opposition. Not long after Hercules meets Thor, the former is tricked by the Enchantress into visiting Earth and attacking the Avengers. He’s swiftly snapped out of it, but his actions anger Zeus and, like Thor before him, he’s banished from his home on Olympus and forced to live among the mortals. Hercules then becomes an on-and-off member of the Avengers, later co-founding his own team called the Champions, and creating a new life for himself on Earth and pulling away from the Hercules known in Greek mythology.

Perhaps the post-movie setup is actually for a future team-up where Hercules attacks Earth’s Mightiest Heroes before having a change of heart, ultimately being banished by Zeus for not fulfilling his mission and becoming a regular mainstay of the MCU Avengers. Or, maybe, his assault on Thor will only last briefly, before the two partner up to take on a bigger threat. The duo have confronted massive villains like the Chaos King Amatsu-Mikaboshi and Herc’s Uncle Pluto together in the past. There’s a good chance one of those baddies lines up against the “God Squad” of Herc and Thor in another solo adventure down the line.

    Valkyrie: Jane Foster

Once the credits have been completed, fans are treated to a short scene that could serve to either wrap up Dr. Jane Foster’s MCU story or open the door to an entirely new chapter. In Love and Thunder‘s final moments, Jane uses a crumbling Mjolnir to entrap the blade of Gorr’s God-slaying sword and destroy it for good. This effectively defeats the God Butcher and saves the lives of all gods, but it also robs Foster of the only thing keeping her alive. After her sacrifice, Jane dies contently in the arms of Thor, knowing the universe has been made a better place for everyone. The post-credits reveal that Jane, having died an Asgardian hero, has been granted access to an afterlife in Valhalla.

She’s welcomed to life-after-death by Idris Elba’s Heimdall, who previously perished in battle against Thanos and the Black Order. He’s happy to see Jane, who saved the life of his son after he was kidnapped by Gorr, and welcomes her to a post-mortem existence as both a warrior and a friend. The pair walk off together, gladly embracing whatever Valhalla may have in store for them. If Marvel so chooses, this could be the perfect ending to the tale of Jane Foster, especially if actress Natalie Portman decides she’s done with the superhero gig forever. However, it could also be teeing up an adaptation of a very recent comic run from legendary Thor scribe Jason Aaron.

Still ongoing at the time of this publication, Valkyrie: Jane Foster tells the story of Foster after she loses the power of The Mighty Thor. Forced to sacrifice a crumbling Mjolnir in a last-ditch effort to save the universe, Jane is blessed with the powers of a Valkyrie and becomes the first in a new generation of Asgard’s most elite group. She then accepts help from a recently deceased Heimdall, ultimately using her newfound abilities to aid a grieving Thor and take Heimdall’s spirit on one last adventure through the multiversal afterlife. Sound familiar? Love and Thunder establishes a close friendship, and possible romance, between Foster and Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie. It’s not far-fetched to think Val might find a way to bless Jane with Valkrior power in a future MCU project, and the post-credits scene perfectly sets up the new friendship between Foster and Heimdall. If Portman and Elba are both down for another outing, this story could be adapted as a sub-plot in Thor 5 or as a Valkyrie spin-off series on Disney+. After all, Kevin Feige and company really do love their series spin-offs these days.

  • Taika Waititi’s ‘Star Wars’ Film Reportedly Eyeing Early 2023 Production Start

Taika Waititi’s ‘Star Wars’ Film Reportedly Eyeing Early 2023 Production Start

There have been many theories on when we’d finally get a new Star Wars film. Lucasfilm has been solely focused on their Disney+ ventures with Andor on the horizon and the recent release of Obi-Wan Kenobi. Patty Jenkin‘s Rogue Squadron was originally going to start filming to release next year, but it looks like Taika Waititi‘s upcoming original film is the one that’ll start production sooner rather than later. In the latest Heat Vision entry for The Hollywood Reporter, they reveal that the film is eyeing a 2023 production start.

As the piece points out, Waititi has hinted that he’s not quite done with the story and that we may not see it anytime soon, but their sources are pointing out that they’re very likely to start next year. The only thing that could postpone it is Lucasfilm, which has become a bit infamous for how it tackles its film division and has become a reason for pushing out releases.

Waititi is jumping into his next project quite quickly, but there have been hints that he has another project on the horizon. So, he may once again be overscheduling himself, such as he revealed that he edited Thor: Love and Thunder while still wearing his costume from playing Blackbeard on Our Flag Means Death. So, we’ll see if there will be an official announcement in the near future.

  • BREAKING: ‘Captain America 4’ Finds Its Director in Julius Onah

BREAKING: ‘Captain America 4’ Finds Its Director in Julius Onah

The Hollywood Reporter has announced that Julius Onah will direct the film for Marvel Studios. Onah, a Nigerian-American filmmaker, is perhaps best known for his work on The Cloverfield Paradox, as well as the critically acclaimed Luce. Captain America 4 will serve as Onah’s biggest film project to date.

Captain America 4, which was announced shortly after The Falcon and the Winter Soldier ended, is being penned Malcolm Spellman, the head writer of The Falcon and the Winder Soldier, and Dalan Musson, a staff writer on the show. As of now, no start date has been announced for the upcoming film.

The film will see Anthony Mackie return as the shield-wielding hero after taking over the Captain America mantle in the Disney+ series. While previous reports suggested Chris Evans might be returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe for an undisclosed project, it remains to be seen whether or not the project is Captain America 4. In recent weeks, Evans has suggested a return as Steve Rogers is unlikely, as he is content with how his character’s story ended, so it seems unlikely he’ll return for Captain America 4 as of now.

A release date for Captain America 4, which still lacks an official title, has not yet been announced.
