Tom Holland Talks About How Emotional Making ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ Was With Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield

Spider-Man: No Way Home was met with praise from both critics and fans when it was finally released in theaters last month. The film has gone on to become a record-breaking box office success, but the movie will undoubtedly go down in cinematic history for its bold celebration of live-action Spider-Man movies as a whole. In particular, the returns of both Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker are unforgettable moments for the franchise. No Way Home lead Tom Holland opened up to MaguireGarfield, and Deadline about how emotional making the film was:

There definitely was a sense for me, as an actor, that this was the last time that I could potentially don the suit, so a lot of that emotion came from the act of saying goodbye, which is one of the biggest themes throughout this film. But this film also felt like a celebration of three generations of cinema. So, at times, we would be getting into these scenes that were incredibly emotional. They’re very taxing, and I was so happy to be there, that I had to go at it a different way and kind of go, ‘wow, look at my life. Look what’s happened to me. I’m working with Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield and we’re telling this story’”…And I would get emotional at kind of how proud I was of the situation that we were in and what we were doing and that I really believed in what we were doing. So, yeah, it was tough, but you know, anything hard is worthwhile. I was happy to kind of really push myself and to make this film more emotional than superhero films have been in the past.

Holland has previously praised working with Maguire and Garfield on No Way Home. Now that No Way Home is no longer a secret, we should start to learn more about the making of the movie considering Sony is eyeing an Academy Awards nomination for Best Picture for the film.

‘System Shock’ Finds Director in ‘Mortal Kombat’ Writer Greg Russo

Fresh off penning HBO Max’s most successful film, Mortal Kombat, Greg Russo will make the leap to directing. According to Deadline, the aforementioned Russo has been tapped to direct the Binge.com live-action series System Shock. The series will be based on the video game franchise of the same name, which first released in 1994, and has spawned sequels and spin-offs.

Said Russo: “I’m honored to have the opportunity to work alongside the fantastic team at Binge and Nightdive Studios to bring the iconic System Shock franchise to life. I’ve been waiting for the right opportunity to make my directorial debut, and I finally found it.”

This will be the 4th videogame adaptation for Russo, as he previously helped bring Mortal Kombat, Saints Row, and Space Invaders from the video game to the screen.

  • Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield Believe ‘No Way Home’ Would Have Been Great Without Them

Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield Believe ‘No Way Home’ Would Have Been Great Without Them

What used to feel like a never-ending rumor was finally confirmed when Spider-Man: No Way Home released in theaters last month: both Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield returned to reprise their roles as Peter Parker and Spider-Man in Tom Holland’s third Spider-Man outing.

While their inclusion in No Way Home is largely praised and already legendary, the two Spider-Man veterans told Deadline that they believe the film would have been successful even without their returns. Garfield stated:

I watched the movie with Tobey for the first time and I was in pieces. Like, this is a deep movie. This is a movie that is about a coming of age, an acceptance of loss, acceptance of death, taking responsibility for your gifts. I was torn open by the journey that Tom went on; it’s classic Peter Parker, but it felt totally fresh and totally reimagined. It is like, Tom’s origin story was happening in his third movie rather than his first. There’s something so profound. So the film, I feel, stands alone without me and Tobey showing up. I hope we enhance it, but I think [director] Jon Watts and Tom have made this something, actually, that is exceptionally moving, especially for young people, you know? I think it’s a beautiful film.

    Andrew Garfield

While Maguire noted how grateful he was to be a part of the experience. The actor called it “rich” and “emotional,” while agreeing with Garfield that the film still stands on its own without their inclusion. He explained:

I was just grateful every day. Really, it was such a rich experience and, as the guys have touched on, the kind of sharing of something and the brotherhood of it. It was just so rich, emotional. You know, day to day, it was just a beautiful kind of unfolding of this story and these relationships…And the way those films and characters evolved in those films are unique, and then to bring all of that together, including all of our supervillains and all of that, it was pretty wild to witness the immensity of all of this history coming together and being put into what Andrew was saying is this standalone, worthwhile story.

    Tobey Maguire

At this point, it is hard to imagine what No Way Home would have been without the boundary-breaking multiversal returns of Maguire’s and Garfield’s characters. We can expect to hear more about the movie and the actors’ roles in it considering Sony is eyeing an Academy Awards nomination for Best Picture for the film.

For now, fans can watch Spider-Man: No Way Home in theaters, where it continues to smash box office expectations on nearly a daily basis.

  • Tobey Maguire is Responsible for the Spider-Men Reunion in ‘No Way Home’

Tobey Maguire is Responsible for the Spider-Men Reunion in ‘No Way Home’

Long before Spider-Man: No Way Home hit theaters, there were plenty of rumors regarding those who would be involved in the project. One of those names tossed around was Spider-Man actor, Tobey Maguire. Rumors suggested the actor would be a cameo of sorts in the latest Spider-Man movie, but Maguire remained quiet, leaving many to believe the reports were inaccurate. Then rumors hit stating The Amazing Spider-Man actor Andrew Garfield would be returning, too, and unlike Maguire, the actor had no problem addressing the rumors.

While Garfield consistently lied to the press and fans about not appearing in No Way Home, the rumors were obviously proven to be true when No Way Home released in theaters. Now, Garfield is finally getting a chance to talk about it now that the secret is out. In a conversation with Deadline that included all three Spider-Men, Garfield revealed that Tobey Maguire was a major reason he signed on for the film:

Well, I was just waiting to see if Tobey was going to do it, and if Tobey was going to do it, then I was like, ‘Well, I have no choice,’ you know? I’d follow Tobey to the ends of the Earth. It was like, ‘Oh, the intention feels very pure here. It actually feels like a great creative idea and a great creative story.’ It wasn’t like they were just asking us to come and say hi and then leave again but actually have our presence being in service to Tom, being in service to Tom’s journey and where he is as Peter Parker. And I love the destiny feeling of the multiverse expanding in this film, and actually, without Tobey’s Peter and Andrew’s Peter being present for Tom’s Peter at this very moment, he may not become the Peter Parker that he’s supposed to become.

    Andrew Garfield

Now that No Way Home is no longer such a tightly-held secret by Sony and Marvel, it is likely we will get more of Maguire’s and Garfield’s thoughts on the movie in the near future. Press for the film will continue to be strong, as Sony is eyeing an Academy Awards nomination for Best Picture for No Way Home.

As it stands, Spider-Man: No Way Home is continuing to dominate the box office. Over the weekend, the superhero film hit $721 million at the domestic box office. That was enough to give it the honor of being the 4th place among the highest-grossing movies of all time. Internationally, the film is doing just as well bringing in an astounding $970.1 million overseas for a collective haul of $1.69 million as of Sunday.

  • Tom Holland Uncertain If He Will Return to Play Spider-Man

Tom Holland Uncertain If He Will Return to Play Spider-Man

After the record-breaking box-office and critical success of Spider-Man: No Way Home, lead Tom Holland has played coy on whether or not he will return as Peter Parker in a fourth installment of his Spider-Man franchise. While he has expressed his interest in continuing to play Spider-Man, the actor recently told Deadline that he simply does not know if he will return or not:

The truthful answer — and I’ve done a whole press tour where all I do is lie — the truth is, and you’re not going to like the truth, I don’t know the answer to that question. This film for me was as special as an experience could ever be. Sharing the screen with these guys. Playing Spider-Man could be quite an alienating experience because, you know, we’re the only three blokes who have done it. So to share that with [Andrew and Tobey], it’s been such a wonderful experience, of which I have such amazing memories. There’s part of me that feels like it’s the perfect time to jump off the building and swing off into the sunset and let the next lucky young kid come in to don the suit. Or I might, I don’t know, buy a new house and need a paycheck and I’ll be back.

    Tom Holland

While a fourth film is in development, as revealed by Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige in December, Holland insists he’s unsure of his future as the web-slinger. The Cherry actor goes on to say:

I don’t know. I don’t know. I know I love this character, and I know that I am not ready to say goodbye…But if it’s time for me to say goodbye, then I will do so proudly, knowing that I’ve achieved everything I wanted to with this character, and sharing it with these boys will be forever one of the most special experiences of my career. So, if it’s time, it’s time. If it’s not, it’s not. But at the moment, I don’t know.

    Tom Holland

Considering the enormous success of the movie, there is little reason to think that Sony wants to replace Holland in the follow-up to No Way Home. His return (or lack thereof) will likely be confirmed sooner rather than later, as Sony is ramping up press on the film in a campaign for an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture.

  • Karen Gillan on ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’: “It’s a Juggernaut Movie”

Karen Gillan on ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’: “It’s a Juggernaut Movie”

In 2014, James Gunn introduced the Guardians of the Galaxy to the MCU. In the years since, the ragtag bunch of losers who were, at the time, unknown to all but the most hardcore of comic book readers, have become household names and among the most beloved characters in the MCU. Gunn and the cast are now deep into production on the third volume of their story, one that Gunn has called the last go around for this version of the team, and the film is set to hit theaters in May of 2023.

Chief among the characters that Gunn brought into the public eye through the films is Nebula, played by Karen Gillan. Over the course of the two Guardians’ films and Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, the character has gradually grown into a bigger role as Gillan has grown into a bigger star. Gillan’s latest film, a sci-fi movie about clones titled Dual, premiered last week at Sundance. During a recent AMA with Dual co-star Aaron Paul, Gillan talked about what it’s like working with Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn.

It’s a juggernaut movie, right? Like all the Marvel films are but what James Gunn brings to it is this real indie spirit. Like it doesn’t necessarily feel like…like you’re not so aware that you’re making a giant movie. It’s like…it fells as loose and free and as flexible as an indie can feel sometimes. And he always directs with a microphone. And so you’re always just getting like this booming voice from God, essentially. He’s like, “Do it again. Do it like this.” And then he throws out lines that aren’t even in the script. And you know, “Call him this. Do this.” And then you literally hear him laughing over the microphone, which is also maybe the best feeling ever, too. Your like, “Yes, I made him laugh.”

There is no doubt that Gunn will look to tell a monster of a story in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 as not only is it the last go around for the characters that he’s spent the better part of a decade developing, but also potentially his last time in a director’s chair for Marvel Studios as he looks to work more closely with DC. Given the quality of Gunn’s two most recent superhero projects, The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker, MCU fans could be in for something very special.

  • Footage of the Cancelled Boba Fett Game Has Surfaced Online

Footage of the Cancelled Boba Fett Game Has Surfaced Online

Once upon a time, before the age of Disney, Lucasfilm was working on a game titled Star Wars: 1313. The game was centered on mythical bounty hunter Boba Fett as he made his way through the underbelly of a crime-ridden part of Coruscant referred to as Level 1313.

At the time, All eyes were on this game as it promised an immersive look into a world of Star Wars that we haven’t seen through the helmet of Boba Fett no less. Alas, the game wasn’t meant to be as it was canceled as soon as Disney acquired Lucasfilm in 2012. Star Wars: 1313 became known as one of those pre-Disney treasures that were lost in the ether forever, never to be seen again.

Today, some footage of the canceled game has made its way online, giving us a look at what could have been. Check it out below!

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XehW4OMiEr4

The game never quite made its way into a finished state hence the wildly underdeveloped systems and graphics. It isn’t quite groundbreaking by modern standards but it gives us a nice look at this Sleeping Dogs/GTA-esque game set in the underworld. Even from this brief clip, we get a version of Boba Fett that is already sorely lacking from this new era of Star Wars.

The leak almost feels serendipitous in the face of the criticism leveled at The Book of Boba Fett, a show that was supposed to give us the crime bounty hunter show we all wanted. Instead, the show ended up as a truncated, uneven story that saw Boba Fett getting punked weekly.

It’s unlikely we ever see this game get revived despite Lucasfilm’s recently announced plans to expand their AAA gaming line. We can only hope that we get something as ambitious as this buried project.

  • ‘Peacemaker’ Reigns as The Biggest Streaming Series Currently

‘Peacemaker’ Reigns as The Biggest Streaming Series Currently

Streaming is all the rage these days as more and more studios branch out into direct-to-consumer releases. It’s become a hot spot for shared universes like the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Star Wars, and now the DCEU. So it comes as no surprise that the HBO Max has struck gold with Peacemaker which now happens to be the biggest streaming show today.

As of January 22nd, the series has become the most in-demand streaming series in the world, reportedly 69.5 times more in demand than most series. The series has now surpassed both the second season and first season of The Witcher and Book of Boba Fett respectively.

It is being reported that in 2021, demand for original programming on HBO Max grew a whopping 39.2% compared to Netflix’s 10.3%. Max has also continued to exceed subscription expectations as it closed out the year 2021 with 73.8 million subscribers.

HBO Max has recently branded itself “The Streaming Home of DC” as they continue to develop original content based on DC comics. HBO Max is developing quite a few DC original projects based on IPs such as Black Canary, the Green Lantern, and Justice League Dark characters. In addition to those in development, the service is already home to Titans, Doom Patrol, Young Justice, and Harley Quinn.

  • ‘Peacemaker’ Episode 5 Primer

    ‘Peacemaker’ Episode 5 Primer

We’ve passed the halfway mark on the first, and hopefully not last, season of Peacemaker on HBO Max. Episode 5 is set to hit HBO Max tomorrow and fans are waiting to see what’s next following that jaw-dropping revelation at the end of last week’s episode. Episode 4 featured some emotional moments and revelations for the team, especially Peacemaker himself, who may finally be realizing his father was never trying to toughen him up, just abusing him and taking his anger on the world out on the only person he had left.

Following the mission in which the team exterminated Royland Goff and his family, who were indeed butterflies as Murn suspected, and with Judomaster in tow, the gang heads back to their rundown base of operations with one less toe than before and Vigilante claiming that he may never walk the same again.

Following a brief team meeting, Peacemaker and Vigilante return to Auggie Smith’s house where the nosey neighbor explains that Auggie has been arrested, but only after he gets into an argument with Peacemaker about Batman, similar to spats you see on Twitter daily.

This is where Peacemaker begins to realize who his father really is. It’s obvious that Auggie is a repugnant and awful man, but as his son, Smith only saw that through rose-colored glasses, believing it to be tough love. It took Auggie telling Chris that he wished he had killed him the second he was born, but Chris seems to have finally had a breakthrough.

After a bit of not-so-subtle manipulation by Adebayo, Vigilante gets the sudden idea to kill Auggie and rid Christopher of him once and for all. Vigilante was the stand-out this episode. While he may be a complete psychopath, he’s one with good intentions who cares about people and things, but just has a funny way of showing it. Getting himself arrested, he takes the Aryans head-on and proceeds to ridicule them for all their backward thoughts and actions, provoking them into attacking him first so that he can make his way to Auggie and take him out.

The episode ends with a montage between characters to “House of Pain” by The Pussycats. We see Peacemaker facing a lot of crucial events in his life: him being forced the kill a man by his father, presumably the first life he’d taken; a flashback to the events of The Suicide Squad, in which we see Peacemaker kill Rick Flag, someone he looked up to and believed to be an American hero, in which Flag calls him a joke; finally, we see the death of Christopher’s brother. Although we aren’t exactly sure how it happened, it’s a moment that deeply haunts him.

The most shocking revelation in this episode, however, takes place in the final scene in which we see Murn revealed as a butterfly as he releases his proboscis to consume the amber nectar. Just why is Murn trying to take down the butterflies if he is one?

Episode 5 of Peacemaker debuts tomorrow on HBO Max.

  • ‘Good Omens’ Season 2 Announces New Cast Members

‘Good Omens’ Season 2 Announces New Cast Members

Ahead of Season 2 of Good Omens, Neil Gaiman‘s fantasy series for Amazon Prime in conjunction with BBC studios, the studio has officially announced the cast list.

Michael Sheen and David Tennant will return to their roles as Aziraphale and Crowley respectively, and Derek Jacobi will also return as Metatron. The trio will be joined by newcomer Dame Siân Phillips.

Also returning this season are Mark Gattis, Steve Pemberton, Reece Shearsmith, and Niamh Walsh. They will be joined by a series of newcomers including Tim Downie (Outlander), Pete Firman (The Magicians), Andi Osho (I May Destroy You) and Alex Norton (Pirates of the Caribbean).

Other cast includes Jon Hamm, Miranda Richardson, Maggie Service, Nina Sosanya, Doon Mackichan, Gloria Obianyo, Liz Carr, Quelin Sepulveda, and Shelley Conn. Unfortunately, neither Benedict Cumberbatch, nor Francis McDormand will be returning for Season 2.

Season 2 of the show will no longer be following the novel of the same name. As the series continues, new plotlines will develop the relationship between the main characters as they are greeted with a brand new story full of potential.

The show is currently being developed in Scotland, and writer Neil Gaiman had this to say with the new casting announcement: “We are so thrilled that we were able to get so many fabulous actors to return to the Good Omens family. Some of them are reprising roles, some of them are playing completely new characters. And we are just as thrilled by the people coming to the Good Omens team for the first time. We have an ensemble cast of astonishing talent, and seeing what they’re giving us is a daily treat. I can’t wait until the rest of the world gets that treat, too.”

The show is certainly lining up an excellent cast, even if it is disappointing to lose Cumberbatch and McDormand as God and Satan, the rest of the cast list is looking jam packed. Although announced in June 2021, we still have no solid confirmation of a release date of the new season.
