    Andrew Garfield Finally Addresses His MCU Future

    Andrew Garfield‘s return as Peter Parker/The Amazing Spider-Man in 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home was one of the highlights of what is unarguably one of Marvel Studios’ best post-Infinity Saga projects. Garfield showed off his incredible growth as an actor since first taking up the role in 2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man by bringing a damaged and reflective Spidey to the screen.

    Possibly more enjoyable than his work in the film, however, was his work leading up to it. It was there that Garfield showed his true talents as an actor by denying he had any role in Spider-Man: No Way Home despite plenty of credible intel that he was. In doing so, Garfield joined a long and prestigious list of actors who vehemently denied their roles in Marvel Studios projects. Following the release of the film, Garfield explained that while “the company” made him keep up the lie, “it was kinda fun to do” although it “ruined his reputation” for telling the truth. Now, as rumors continue to swirl that the actor will make another MCU appearance in Spider-Man 4, Garfield is back at work and nobody knows how to take him.

    We all came with our own history and with our own relationship to the character in our own films. I think what really was wonderful, and how it unfolded very early on, was Tobey and I felt very aligned and very clear about what our intentions were for being there. Ultimately, it was to serve Tom as an actor and, as characters, serving Tom’s Peter Parker. I think from that place, everything flowed. It enabled Tobey and me to have a bit more fun maybe than we would’ve had if we were the ones fully carrying the story.

    During an interview with Indie Wire, Garfield was asked about his potential involvement with Spider-Man 4, which is still in development. “I mean, like the internet is a big place,” Garfield said. “I think there’s a lot of people who will just say anything to get clicks. So you might have been duped, I’m afraid.” Have fans been duped? Or is Garfield once again throwing out the company line?

    While the actor’s involvement in Spider-Man 4 is possible, especially given the reception to his return as Spidey in No Way Home, it does seem more likely that he’d return for one or both of the studio’s next two Avengers projects, 2026’s Doomsday and 2027’s Secret Wars. Of course, even set photos of Garfield didn’t convince fans of his role in No Way Home, so until whatever project he’s returning in hits theaters, the actor will be able to continue to have fun deceiving fans.

    Marvel Studios ‘Vision’ Series Casts Todd Stashwick as Mysterious Assassin

    Ahead of an expected January 2025 start of principal photography, Marvel Studios’ upcoming streaming series, currently referred to as Vision Quest, has begun building out its cast around star Paul Bettany. While there’s still next to nothing known about the project, it’s starting to seem as though the ghostly white rebuilt Vision will have his work cut out for him as he attempts to find his place in a change world.

    Just a couple of weeks after it was reported that James Spader had signed on to return to the role of Vision’s daddy robot, Ultron, THR has learned that the synthezoid will also have another villain on his tail in the streaming series. According to Borys Kit, TV vet Todd Stashwick has boarded the project as “an assassin who is on the trail of android and the technology he possesses.“

    Stashwick has worked with new Vision showrunner Terry Matalas on both Star Trek: Picard and the SyFy series 12 Monkeys which likely means Matalas wrote the part of the mysterious villain with the actor in mind. Stashwick’s resume as a TV actor extends into the previous century and includes work on series such as Heroes, Justified, FX’s The Riches and Fox’s Gotham, where he played Richard Sionis, aka The Mask.

    After being destroyed by Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War, Vision’s shell was confiscated by S.W.O.R.D.. Under the supervision of Marvel Studios’ worst villain ever, Tyler Hayward, Vision was reassembled and reactivated as part of Project Cataract in the streaming series WandaVision. After interacting with Wanda’s Hex version of Vision, the new White Vision left Westview and the next chapter of his story will be told when the Vision Quest series hits Disney Plus, presumably in 2026.

    Marvel TV Head Honcho Teases Future Plans for Kathryn Hahn’s Agatha

    Even before WandaVision debuted on Disney Plus in January 2021, MCU fans had already fallen in love with Kathryn Hahn‘s Agnes. Over the course of the 9-episode series, Agnes evolved from a nosy neighbor to a major nuisance and was eventually revealed to be Agatha Harkness, a power-hungry witch who had been alive for over 300 years. Hahn’s performance created a demand for more MCU-set Agatha adventures and the WandaVision finale left the door open for them. It didn’t take long for an Agatha-centric spinoff to go into development and after a half dozen or so name changes, the debut of Agatha All Along is right around the corner. And even before it debuts, fans have already begun clamoring for more of the wicked witch.

    Agatha All Along will see Hahn’s depowered witch break free from Wanda’s spell, collect a coven and head down the Witches’ Road to regain what she’s lost. And while there’s no guarantee Agatha or any of her crew will survive, Marvel TV’s head honcho, Brad Winderbaum, is already teasing her next MCU project.

    In Marvel Studios’ Agatha All Along, the infamous Agatha Harkness finds herself down and out of power after a suspicious goth Teen helps break her free from a distorted spell. Her interest is piqued when he begs her to take him on the legendary Witches’ Road, a magical gauntlet of trials that, if survived, rewards a witch with what they’re missing. Together, Agatha and this mysterious Teen pull together a desperate coven, and set off down, down, down The Road…

    In an interview with Screen Rant’s Joe Deckelmeir, Winderbaum revealed that Agatha will next be seen performing a “giant musical number” in the third season of Marvel Studio’s canonical animated series, What If…?.

    “When you have an icon like Kathryn Hahn [and what she] has brought to the screen with Agatha, you just want to see more of her,” said Winderbaum responding to a question about the future of Agatha. “So yes, there will be more Agatha in the future [of] the MCU, yes,” he added before revealing her appearance in the animated project’s third season. “She is in an episode of What If…? season 3 – I shouldn’t say more, but it’s one of my favorite episodes ever done, and and it may involve the giant musical number, and she’s just incredible, and we all want to see more of her.”

    A considerable amount of hype has already been built around Season 3 of What If…? and the inclusion of a musical number by Agatha will do nothing to calm it down. In fact, Hahn‘s participation in the series is rather likely to attract a number of fans who fell in love with the character during her time on WandaVision.

    While there’s no release date yet set aside for Season 3 of What If…?, Agatha All Along will debut with a two-episode premiere on September 18th on Disney Plus.

    ‘Creature Commandos’: James Gunn Reveals Animated Series Release Date, Teases Its Place in the DCU

    James Gunn and Peter Safran set themselves the titanic task of creating an all-new, all-different DCU from the rumble of the previous iteration. To do so, the DC Studios co-chairs had to ensure that their projects looked and felt as different as possible from their predecessor…and by launching the new shared universe with a canonical animated series, they’ve done just that.

    Written by Gunn, the seven-episode streaming series Creature Commandos will provide what he calls “a little nibble” of what to expect from the DCU, allowing fans to “see what it tastes like.” Now fans finally know when they can expect the hors d’oeuvres.

    Gunn took to social media to reveal that Creature Commandos will debut on Max on December 5th.

    In an interview with EW, Gunn explained that part of what drew him to Creature Commandos was how far removed it was from the “mainstream” DC Comics series that most folks know and love.

    The thing I’ve always loved about DC Comics was that you had your mainstream comics that always ran, but they also had these tonally different comics like Watchmen and The Dark Knight Returns and All-Star Superman. It was different from Marvel in that way. That’s something that I really want to retain within the studio, that every project is going to bring a different vision by the artists who are creating it.

    And for Gunn, dealing with “different” has proven to be his wheelhouse in superhero fare so far. While working with Marvel Studios, Gunn bravely launched a Guardians of the Galaxy franchise full of misfit comic book characters that general audiences had never heard of before and turned them into household names. While fans might see some similarities between the Guardians and the Commandos, Gunn cautions that this isn’t just an animated Guardians redux. “I’m used to dealing with oddballs and irregular types and weirdos,” said Gunn. “That’s what Guardians is, and Creature Commandos is kind of like Guardians without the sentimentality. The Guardians are all really good characters at their heart, and that just isn’t necessarily the case with the creatures.“

    While kicking off an all-new, all-different shared universe with an animated series filled with characters that only hardcore fans of DC Comics will know and that may not prove as loveable and Rocket and Groot might seem risky, Gunn is confident that Creature Commandos will effectively set the table for the DCU. “Superman is the true start of everything, it’s a humongous epic. This is a way for people to just take a little nibble and see what it tastes like,” Gunn says. “There are a ton of fun references to other DC stuff, a bunch of hints for things that are coming. So I think it’s just an extraordinarily fun way to start.“

    Marvel Studios Reportedly Considering Canceling Two Major Projects

    After a nearly decade-long run as the undisputed champion of pop culture, Marvel Studios has faced its fair share of adversity over the past several years. The return of Bob Iger following a string of films that weren’t quite up to the studio’s own lofty standards and a streaming project that could just have easily stayed in the idea stage led to some big changes behind the scenes. After taking some time to reflect on what went wrong, the studio adopted a new way of doing business behind the scenes and rolled out some flashy rebranding in public in hopes of recapturing the magic that made the brand.

    One change clearly stated by Iger was that the studio would no longer seek to push out 4 movies and 4 streaming projects each year. With so many projects already known to be in various stages of development at the time of Iger’s mandate, it seemed a certainty that some projects would be pushed well down the road while others might never made at all. According to a new report, two projects that have been in development for several years are on the chopping block.

    According to insider Daniel RPK, Marvel Studios is currently considering the fates of both Armor Wars and Blade with a decision on the future of both projects expected by the end of the year.

    Armor Wars

    Originally announced as a streaming series during Disney’s 2020 Investor Day presentation, Armor Wars became a theatrical project in 2022. Marvel Studios’ Parliament member Nate Moore explained that the decision to shift gears to a movie was due in part to “some great ideas that were coming out for that show but that, to be quite honest, felt too big for that show.” Big ideas mean a big budget and, as Moore explained, it became more realistic to develop Armor Wars as a feature film.

    Our Disney+ shows are awesome and we love them, but the budgets are not the same as the features, that’s not secret. And when you’re talking about a show that wants to be about seeing all the cool armors, and Don Cheadle interacting with all these armors, and the legacy of Tony Stark, that became cost-prohibitive to do as a show.

    At that time, the story of Armor Wars was also explained to be very connected both to what came before (which turned out to be Secret Invasion) and what was coming next.

    And we realized as a feature, not only can we get into some of the beautiful imagery that is from publishing and there’s certainly an Armor Wars run, but also there’s ways then to leverage the ideas of that movie that affect other movies down the line. So it becomes a multiplication really of, once you figure out what is cool about something…

    However, with Secret Invasion being an abysmal failure and the entire back half of the Multiverse Saga being rethought following the poor reception to the concept and the firing of Jonathan Majors, Armor Wars has gone from a necessary bridge to potential collateral damage.

    Blade

    Easily the biggest surprise of SDCC ’19, the studio’s Mahershala Ali-led Blade film has gone through well-documented turmoil and seems no closer to being made now than it was five years ago. Despite Disney still holding a November 7, 2025 date aside for the film, Blade is currently without a director and has already gone through at least six different writers.

    Director Yann Demange‘s decision to leave the project was the end result of a tumultuous six months full of upheval and uncertainty. As recently as January 2024, Demange expressed excitement over the project and explained why being given the green light to make an R-rated film was so crucial to the project.

We are going to have fun because Mahershala is such a deep actor.” “I’m excited to show a kind of ruthlessness, a roughness he has, that allows him to walk the earth in a particular way. I love him for that. He’s got a dignity and integrity, but there is a ferocity there that he usually keeps under the surface. I want to unleash that and put it on the screen.

    At this point, it seems more likely that Blade–whose voice was heard in a post-credit scene to Eternals–may appear in the rumored Midnight Sons film before a solo Blade project gets off the ground.

    DC Studios Reportedly Reuniting ‘Challengers’ and ‘Queer’ Creatives for Upcoming Period Piece

    When DC Studios’ co-chairs James Gunn and Peter Safran revealed the first 10 projects of the DCU’s first chapter in its all-new shared narrative, they made it clear that there were plenty of other projects in the creative pipeline yet to be announced. Since then, a Teen Titans film was reported to be in the works with Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow writer Ana Nogueira developing the script. Now, it seems as though another new project is in the works, the identity of which is pretty surprising.

    Following a report by Jeff “The In” Sneider that Challengers and Queer director Luca Guadagnino was “being courted” by DC Studios for an unnamed project, a second report is filling in the blanks.

    According to Nexus Point News, Guadagnino will reunite with scribe Justin Kuritzkes, with whom he worked on Challengers and Queers, to create a Sgt. Rock film for DCU Studios. Additionally, the site claims the film will be a period piece set during World War II.

    Given the attention Gunn and Safran seem to be devoting to DC Comics heavy hitters, a Sgt. Rock project was probably not on a lot of folks’ bingo cards. However, the character has nearly been brought to the big screen multiple times before with talent such as Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis attached to star and Guy Ritchie once attached to direct.

    Originally reported to be in development by the DCU Leaks Reddit page, this is the first bit of news about the Sgt. Rock project in over six months. At the time, it was reported that an “A-list” director was interested in helming the project.

    DC Studios Eyeing Primetime Emmy Award-Winning Director for ‘Lanterns’

    Co-chair James Gunn described DC Studios’ streaming series Lanterns as playing a “really big role leading us into the main story” of the DCU’s Chapter One: Gods and Monsters. And Gunn and Peter Safran have assembled an incredibly talented group of creators to put the project together. In May, Gunn announced the “crack team of writers” behind Lanterns: DC Comics writer Tom King, Ozark showrunner Chris Mundy and Lost and HBO’s Watchmen creator, Damon Lindelof. Having already put together a team of heavy hitters to create the show, the studio next set out to land some big talent to put in front of the camera, offering the role of Hal Jordan to Josh Brolin. Now, as they wait on Brolin’s decision and continue to prepare for production to kick off, they’ve also begun searching for directors for the series and, once again, have shot for the stars.

    This is a story of a couple of Green Lanterns John Stewart and Hal Jordan.
    We have a few other Lanterns peppered in there but this is really a terrestrial-based TV show which is almost like True Detective with a couple of Green Lanterns who are space cops watching over Precinct Earth in it they discover a terrifying mystery that ties into our largest story of the DCU.

    According to Jeff “The In” Sneider, DC Studios has contacted Prime Time Emmy Award-winning director Stephen Williams about directing the pilot episode of Lanterns.

    Williams checks all the boxes as an excellent choice for Lanterns having directed two episodes each of HBO’s Watchmen and Westworld as well as multiple episodes of Ray Donovan, The Walking Dead, and, of course, twenty-six episodes of Lost. A frequent collaborator with Lindelof, Williams would be working from what Gunn described as “a wonderful pilot script and bible” from the creative team. At this time, no other directors have been mentioned for Lanterns, which was ordered straight to series at HBO earlier this year.

    ‘Lanterns’: New Report Reveals More Stars on DC Studios’ Short List for Hal Jordan

    DC Studios’ Lanterns is shaping up as a major HBO prestige series. With a series “bible” created by a writers’ room loaded with talent, the studio is now targeting Prime Time Emmy Award-winning director Stephen Williams to helm the pilot and star Josh Brolin to fill the role of Hal Jordan, one of the series’ two leads. However, should he pass, it sounds as though DC Studios co-chairs James Gunn and Peter Safran have more big-time talent in mind to bring Jordan to the all-new, all-different DCU.

    Alright, Alright, Alright…

    According to Jeff “The In” Sneider, should Brolin turn down the role of Jordan, Matthew McConaughey is one of at least two big names DC Studios has interest in approaching. Though he has only recently dabbled in superhero fare as the voice of Cowboypool in Deadpool & Wolverine, McConaughey is no stranger to working with HBO on a prestige series. McConaughey’s role as Detective Rust Cohle in the first season of True Detective landed him ten award nominations, making him one of the series’ most recognized talents. McConaughey would be a bold choice for the role of Jordan and would certainly bring with him the requisite charisma and brashness of the former test pilot turned space cop.

    Hello There!

    If McConaughey‘s name appearing on a short list of actors for the role of Hal Jordan surprised you, Ewan McGregor would certainly do the same and then some. Alas, Sneider shared the news that Obi-Wan Kenobi is on DC Studios’ radar for the role of Jordan. McGregor most recently starred in the Hulu series A Gentleman in Moscow and also received rave reviews for his work on Fargo and won a Primetime Emmy for his role in the Netflix limited series Halston.

    While there’s been no official timeline provided by Gunn or Safran, with a casting search underway for the series’ leads, it would seem reasonable to assume that production on Lanterns could begin in early 2025.

    Marvel Studios TV Head Confirms Which Nova Will Lead Disney Plus Streaming Series

    It’s been over six years since Kevin Feige called Nova a character with “immediate potential” to make his way into the MCU and yet, somehow, the Human Rocket remains grounded. Hope that the character might finally be ready to take off briefly flickered in 2022 when Moon Knight writer Sabir Pirzada agreed to begin development on a Nova project; however, following Bob Iger‘s return to Disney–which came with a mandate to slow things down on the Marvel Studios production line–development on Nova was paused as Marvel’s TV division underwent some restructuring. And then, just as the project seemed destined for the scrap heap, news came that the studio was looking to begin production on it–as a Disney Plus streaming series–in 2025.

    Though there’s been no official word from Marvel Studios that they intend to begin work on the project, Marvel Television head man Brad Winderbaum has been willing to at least confirm that they are working on a Nova series. Now, in a new interview with Phase Zero, Winderbaum revealed which of the two characters who have gone by the name of Nova in the pages of Marvel Comics will lead the show.

    After once again confirming to Phase Zero’s Brandon Davis that Nova remains in development, Winderbaum went on to tease what fans can expect from the streaming series. While addressing how Marvel Television might go about bringing a character with such a large collection of Cosmic stories in his background to Disney Plus, Winderbaum revealed that Nova is being developed as “an amazing ensemble piece” before explaining that fans of the comics will know “how heated that Richard Rider kind of world can get.“

    And it doesn’t really get any clearer than that, folks…

    While the inclusion of Rider as the series’ presumed lead does not preclude the inclusion of Sam Alexander, it would be in the best interest of the studio’s pursuit of longform storytelling to be patient. The studio has previously shown no compunction in choosing to skip over OG comic book heroes in order to put legacy characters front and center in different projects. Winderbaum’s comments seem to indicate that in the case of Nova, the studio will put its greatest Cosmic hero in the spotlight first while likely still leaving room for an understudy to fill the helmet down the road.

    DC Studios’ ‘Lanterns’ Series Targeting a Major MCU Star for the Role of Hal Jordan

    After years of being remembered as one of the most maligned comic book movies of all time, DC’s Green Lantern IP is getting another shot at stardom…and so far it’s shaping up to be one hell of a comeback.

    First announced by DC Studios’ co-chairs James Gunn and Peter Safran in 2023, the HBO streaming series Lanterns will be the vehicle to bring the Green Lantern Corps to the DCU. Created by Ozark writer Chris Mundy, DC Comics ace Tom King and TV legend Damon Lindelof, Lanterns will focus on two of the corps‘ most well-known members, John Stewart and Hal Jordan. Having recently been ordered straight to series, Lanterns began casting for the two lead roles this summer and now a new report indicates that they have made an offer to a major Hollywood star to portray Jordan.

    According to Nexus Point News, DC Studios’ has extended an offer to Josh Brolin to fill the role of DC’s most well-known Lantern, Hal Jordan.

    Brolin, who was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in the 2009 film Milk, is one of Hollywood’s most recognizable stars and would bring even more credibility to Lanterns already impressive roster of talent. No stranger to superhero fare, having portrayed Thanos in the MCU and Cable in Deadpool 2, Brolin also has a successful streaming series under his belt in Prime’s Outer Range.

    John Stewart and Hal Jordan are two of DC’s most compelling characters, and Lanterns brings them to life in an original detective story that is a foundational part of the unified DCU we’re launching next summer with Superman.

    Previously described as a “terrestrial-based investigation story” that “plays a really big role leading us into the main story” in the DCU’s first chapter of stories, Lanterns will revolve around the central characters finding an “ancient horror on Earth.” Word is that Jordan will be a grizzled vet–which makes Brolin a great choice–and that Stewart will be a new member of the Corps working with him as “supercops on Precinct Earth.”
