The mutant renaissance shows no signs of slowing down. Following another critically acclaimed second season, Marvel Television head Brad Winderbaum and the creative team behind X-Men ’97 took the stage at San Diego Comic-Con to map out the long-term future of Disney+’s premier animated franchise.
Winderbaum officially confirmed that Season 3 animation is already fully completed and set to premiere on Disney+ in 2027, while Season 4 is already in active development and targeting a 2028 release.
Alongside the multi-year timeline confirmation, the panelists treated Hall H attendees to exclusive footage and episode breakdowns for the upcoming third chapter.
A Reliable Annual Pipeline
As executive producer Larry Houston recently promised, Marvel Animation’s hit series will–at least for the next two years–be released annually. The schedule keeps pace with Winderbaum’s mandate to create shows on a timeline that fans “can rely on.”
To me, it’s important to try to get to an annual cadence with these shows and to have something that people can rely on. This has been a challenge for streaming in general, but I really want to create television shows that feel like shows. So, part of that is creating a seasonal cadence that people can rely on.

Winderbaum emphasized that with animatics and voice recording already locked for Season 3—and writing teams actively penning Season 4 scripts—X-Men ’97 is now locked into a steady, annual release cadence through the late 2020s.
Season 3: Wolverine Focus & The Brotherhood Returns
Beyond the release schedule, the creative team unmasked two major creative beats for Season 3:
- The Wolverine Spotlight: Panelists teased a standalone, heavy-hitting Season 3 episode focused entirely on Wolverine. The team promised the storyline is engineered to leave die-hard Logan fans “extremely ecstatic” as it digs deep into unadapted comic book lore.
- The Brotherhood‘s New Crusade: An exclusive clip showcased the return of the Brotherhood of Mutants. The classic core roster—Blob, Avalanche, Pyro, and Toad—is joined by electricity-manipulating mutant newcomer Surge.
- The Patriotic Sentinel Ambush: In the preview clip, the Brotherhood takes to the streets to spray-paint “Mutant Freedom” across a skyscraper, with Surge supercharging the graffiti with electrical energy. Their protest is interrupted by an ambush from a fleet of new, red-white-and-blue “Patriotic” Sentinels. The Brotherhood joins forces to completely destroy the government-sponsored robots, teasing escalating geopolitical warfare between mutants and human authorities in Season 3.
X-Men ’97 wasn’t just a hit of 90s nostalgia; it proved that serial, adult-oriented animated storytelling is one of Marvel’s strongest storytelling vehicles.
