REPORT: Aubrey Plaza Joins the MCU in a Mystery Role for ‘Agatha’ Disney+ Series

Here’s a big surprise but shortly after the casting announcement has dropped that Joe Locke has joined the upcoming WandaVision spinoff Agatha: Coven of Chaos, it seems we may have news on another major addition. Illuminerdi has shared that Aubrey Plaza has seemingly joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe in a mystery role for the upcoming Disney+ series.

While no details are shared on what role she has, she is seemingly going to be part of “a group of supporting female characters,” which likely hints at her being part of the coven mentioned in the title. The Parks and Recreation star has been a long-time favorite to get cast in a role and it would be a shame if this is just a one-and-done for the actress.

Still, Agatha is slowly turning into a very interesting project. Ever since the “early days” of Marvel Studios’ Disney+ venture, we’ve been seeing them evolve and adapt with each new series. Most of the ones released so far, including Secret Invasion, were produced around similar times and future projects might look a bit different as they start learning from those experiences.

The fact that Agatha and a potential Vision Quest project are in developmental as spinoffs from WandaVision, opens up the question of what they might help build up towards. The Multiverse Saga is still going but there’s no direct bridge with the overarching narrative besides Wanda’s ability to warp reality at her will. Perhaps they are laying the groundwork for her return to the MCU.

  • RUMOR: ‘Agatha: House of Harkness’ Eyeing 2023 Production Start

RUMOR: ‘Agatha: House of Harkness’ Eyeing 2023 Production Start

We know that a new Disney+ Day is just around the corner alongside D23 and SDCC. So, it seems like we’ll get a look at some of the already announced projects and maybe even some new productions heading our way. Now, it seems we may have gotten a small update in regards to Agatha: House of Harkness. It seems that work on the project may start on it by 2023.

Insider Daniel Richtman has seemingly shared a grid that hints at production eyeing a start from January to May 2023. As such, we may see some casting announcements in the coming months as they prepare to kick off the new year with its production.

There’s also a hint at a new character known only as “Tyler.” They are casing someone between the ages of 17 and 20 years that is a “formidable and dark sense of humor, incredibly witty, astute, and of the moment.” He’s even highlighted as a “fan-boy at times.” While DisInsider believes this might be the character of Billy, there is also the possibility they introduce Agatha’s son Nicholas Scratch.

It’s an exciting prospect to see what they do with a series focused on Agatha Harkness, especially after Kathryn Hahn‘s amazing performance in WandaVision. While we can only speculate for now, here’s hoping we get more details on Agatha: House of Harkness in the near future to build up what exactly Marvel studios has planned for this character.

  • THEORY TIME: How ‘Doctor Strange 2’ Sets Up ‘WandaVision’s Agatha Spinoff

THEORY TIME: How ‘Doctor Strange 2’ Sets Up ‘WandaVision’s Agatha Spinoff

WandaVision introduced us to the iconic Kathryn Hahn’s witchy persona, Agatha Harkness. She was definitely a standout for the series, and it seems that Disney+, as well as Marvel Studios, saw the potential in further exploring her character. In a surprising move, they gave Agatha her own spinoff titled Agatha: House of Harkness. Given what happens to her at the end of WandaVision, it seemed like we might take a step into the past with her upcoming series, but the events of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness may indirectly set up the spinoff series.

After Wanda is taken over by the Darkhold and fully embraces the Scarlet Witch persona, she continues down the path that Agatha warned her about. Yet, after facing the monster that she became, she took down the shrine built in her honor that also led to the end of the Darkhold across the multiverse. While her fate is still left open after a small puff of chaos magic is unleashed before the shrine collapses, it does seem like she’ll be out of commission as a result of the entire structure collapsing on her head.

It would be interesting if they explore her storyline from the Young Avengers: The Children’s Crusade, where she ends up with amnesia and lives with Victor von Doom. We have no idea if that may be the future storyline they are heading towards but one thing is clear: her actions in the film may also end up loosening her grip on Agatha. She was hexed into living a normal suburban life as the nosy neighbor she played while infiltrating Wanda’s initial Westview takeover.

We will likely start the Agatha: House of Harkness series the moment that red puff of chaos magic is unleashed. The Scarlet Witch being hit by the falling debris ends up breaking the curse put upon the witch, who finds herself in Westview again. Now that she’s freed, she starts retracing her steps and we may finally find out what was up with her bunny. Perhaps we even see the return of Evan Peters as Ralph Bohner, who just accepted that Agatha now lives with him.

The big change will be in the fact that she is also no longer controlled by the Darkhold, which seemingly also corrupted her in some way. We may see a redemption story, as Agatha tries to reconnect with the family she left behind for her pursuits in witchcraft. We’ve gotten a glimpse into how that world of the MCU’s magic works, but the series would give us a chance to truly dive deep into the history of witchcraft we’ve only gotten a glimpse at, as Agatha tries to find her place in the world without the Darkhold’s control and faces the consequences of her actions in the past.

  • Elizabeth Olsen’s Wanda Won’t Appear in Agatha’s ‘WandaVision’ Spinoff

Elizabeth Olsen’s Wanda Won’t Appear in Agatha’s ‘WandaVision’ Spinoff

WandaVision may have set up Scarlet Witch’s storyline going into Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, but it also set up a new spinoff focused on Kathryn Hahn‘s Agatha Harkness. The fittingly titled Agatha: House of Harkness will continue the storyline of the now-trapped Agatha, who is still stuck living in Westview. It made us wonder if we might expect a return of Elizabeth Olsen to that series, but she swiftly debunked it in an interview with Good Morning America.

I mean, I would do anything with Hahn, yeah. No, I’m not appearing in it, not as far as I’m aware, but I love that woman so much. That entire show was just filled with lots of joy, it was great.

    Elizabeth Olsen

While it’s a shame they won’t build upon their relationship from the previous entry, given how Multiverse of Madness ends it does seem unlikely she might show up in that series. Of course, it’s also great to use this as a way to further explore Agatha as a character on her own terms rather than just continue their relationship as the basis of her entire character dynamic. Even the Echo spinoff is fully moving away from Hawkeye even if that’s the series she was introduced in. So, we’ll see just what the future has in store for Agatha moving forward.

  • Deep Thoughts: Hypothetical Marvel Studios 2024 Release Calendar, V1

Deep Thoughts: Hypothetical Marvel Studios 2024 Release Calendar, V1

With so much uncertainty remaining about exactly when which projects will stream in 2022, and only some known quantities for 2023, it would be crazy to start thinking about 2024. Without further delay, here’s a look at what Marvel Studios’ 2024 release slate COULD be.

Marvel Studios has not acknowledged the existence of this Hulk project; however, KC Walsh broke the news publicly in October of 2021, supporting information shared with Murphy’s Multiverse 3 months prior. While it seems like a safe bet to be the first 2024 film, given Walsh’s info that it will film in late-2022, all that can be done now is to make a wild prediction that it’ll land here.

As discussed at length here, Charlie Cox is going to be included in a lot of Marvel Studios projects over the next several years. It’s been great for Cox to take off the gloves lately and start discussing his future more and more and, as recent reports have indicated, a Daredevil solo project is among those. At the moment, it looks like that one could go into production as soon as late 2022 or early 2023, but with an already packed 2023, it’s reasonable to expect Daredevil hits Disney Plus in 2024.

The news that Shawn Levy had signed on to take the wheel for Deadpool 3 and the lack of news about other theatrical projects put this one firmly on the board for 2024. Fans are rightly curious about exactly what to expect from this film, but with the writers from the first two films getting a pass at the script, a steady flow of dick jokes is probably on the menu.

While the title of this series is up in the air, from a simple Okoye to a more indicative Midnight Angels, it’s expected that it will spin directly out of the events of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and possibly focus on not only Okoye but also a group of elite Dora Milaje warriors on a VERY special mission. Ryan Coogler has created expansive mythology connected to Wakanda and this series should explore more of that while setting up the future of the franchise.

At one point, this film was on the docket to film in 2021. Recently, Murphy’s Multiverse was informed that production was officially postponed until 2023, putting it among the top contenders for a 2024 release. Thematically, Cap 4 could tie into a number of Marvel Studios projects, including Armor Wars and the Okoye-centric series. Could this be the beginning of a New Avengers team in the MCU?

2024 is the 60th anniversary of Wanda’s first appearance, so what better time for her first solo project to debut? Recent rumors of a solo project The Scarlet Witch seem to be supported by multiple sources and word of a 2023 start of production has reached our ears. A Fall release would align the series with the Autumnal Equinox, one of several major celebrations for Wiccans. Let’s put it here for now.

A late-2023 start of production for this one falls in line with more than a decade’s worth of data that indicates Marvel Studios likes to give creatives a 2-year window from green light to film. Destin Daniel Cretton, who helmed Marvel Studios’ best origin story since Black Panther, is back for the sequel and should benefit from Simu Liu’s Shang-Chi dropping in here and there in between films.

Discussed a couple of times in the most recent 2023 hypothetical calendar, the ability for Marvel to synergistically link theatrical releases to streaming series is a powerful marketing tool. With that tool in the toolbox, a beautiful bridge could be built from Shang-Chi 2 to a Xialing-centric The Ten Rings series. Could the two projects blow open the door for some other hidden cities to enter the MCU?

Note: The latest version of our hypothetical 2023 calendar can be found right here.

  • Kathryn Hahn Offers Update on Her ‘WandaVision’ Spinoff ‘Agatha: House of Harkness’

Kathryn Hahn Offers Update on Her ‘WandaVision’ Spinoff ‘Agatha: House of Harkness’

WandaVision introduced the world to Kathryn Hahn‘s memorable performance as Agatha Harkness. “Agatha All Along” became one of the catchiest songs of the year, and it seems that Marvel Studios wasn’t ready to have such talent and not use her for years to come. During Disney+ Day, they finally confirmed that she’ll get her own spinoff titled Agatha: House of Harkness. We know very little about the project when it takes place in the ever-expanding MCU timeline, and if it might follow up the storylines set up in the finale of their first-ever Disney+ series. Luckily, it seems the actress behind the project may have already gotten some glimpses.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the actress discussed her current career and was asked about the upcoming Marvel Studios series. She didn’t reveal any details sadly, but did say that it is “exactly what I would have hoped and dreamt.” So, they might’ve already started work on the scripts and put together some visuals to showcase where the project is heading. Hopefully, we might find out sooner rather than later when we might expect it to find its way to the streamer.

It would seem like the story will explore her family history that was briefly touched upon in a flashback. Her unleashing the Scarlet Witch won’t make her popular with other witches but finally gets a chance to explore the magic history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe from the perspective of witch culture. Perhaps we get to visit Salem and could even see the return of Ralph Boner. There was also the demon rabbit that ended up getting scrapped from the finale. There are so many possibilities, it’s going to be interesting to see how this series innovates.
