Colton Haynes Reveals Why He Left ‘Arrow’ Ahead of Season 8

With the release of his new memoir, Colton Haynes is finally opening up as to what led him to exit Arrow ahead of Season 8.

His memoir, Miss Memory Lane, was released on May 31st. The 256-page book from Atria Books takes fans down memory lane as Haynes recalls his struggles with addiction, abuse, and his time on Teen Wolf and the CW’s Arrow. The actor, who is set to appear in the Paramount+ Teen Wolf revival movie, left MTV’s Teen Wolf series in 2012 after appearing for two seasons. The decision to leave was financially-based as the network refused to pay the actor what his fellow stars were being paid. Ironically enough, this is an issue Arden Cho experienced too when she received a lowball offer to return for the Paramount+ Teen Wolf movie.

Unfortunately, Haynes had an even more frustrating experience when he was a part of the cast of the CW’s Arrow. The actor starred in the series for seven seasons before transitioning to a recurring role ahead of Season 8. For Haynes, the decision to exit Arrow after Season 7 was due to personal reasons. He wasn’t in the best state mentally, nor did he have a great relationship with his co-stars, or at least one in particular.

In his memoir he writes, “I had walked away from my full-time job on Arrow at the beginning of the year, supposedly because my contract had ended, but it was really because I was too depressed and I couldn’t stand working with one of my cast mates.”

Arrow ended after Season 8 and since then, Haynes hasn’t really appeared in much outside of an episode of Hulu’s Dollface, as well as a music video for Lil Nas X. He can next be seen in Teen Wolf: The Movie, where he’ll reprise his role as Jackson Whittemore. Production recently wrapped and the movie is set to debut sometime this year.

  • REVIEW: ‘Green Arrow: Stranded’ is Everything ‘Arrow’ Wasn’t – And It’s Delightful

REVIEW: ‘Green Arrow: Stranded’ is Everything ‘Arrow’ Wasn’t – And It’s Delightful

These days, it seems like everybody loves a hero with a bow and arrow. Marvel is doubling up on Hawkeyes, Katniss Everdeen is still the gold standard for young adult readers, and Legolas will probably always be the coolest member of Tolkien‘s Fellowship. Yet, one could likely argue that none of these characters have managed to achieve ‘definitive archer’ status in the cultural hive mind. That honor, for at least the last decade, has seemingly belonged to Oliver Queen. While Marvel’s early Avengers films became the cause of an industry-changing uptick in comic book movies, it was DC’s costumed bowman who managed to prove television could pull from the same bag. The CW’s Arrow debuted in 2012, and with it came a new appreciation for the titular vigilante. Green Arrow somehow found himself the center of DC’s most successful live-action universe and a genuine nominee for “most popular superhero.” The only problem was that Arrow never really showed fans why Ollie was so special.

Stephen Amell‘s take on Oliver was dark, angsty, and violent. These attributes were explained away by the character’s time on a hellish island, with claims that nobody could go through that experience and not come out the other end bent on revenge. It’s fine when an adaptation takes creative liberties like this with its protagonist, but it can be frustrating when that altered version takes over as “the one people think about” going forward. The Oliver Queen found in DC’s comic books is a jovial romanticist, who overcame a dark past and appealed to his better nature. Arrow eventually leaned towards this concept but never committed. Luckily for all, actual comic books still undertake an existence on store shelves and online libraries. This means parents still have the opportunity to introduce children to their favorite heroes via the printed page, which facilitates a special kind of bonding you’d be hard-pressed to find anywhere else. Author Brendan Deneen seemingly agrees, as his latest retelling of the Emerald Archer’s origin, Green Arrow: Stranded, might be the perfect way to get kids into a hero whose most well-known series isn’t meant for them.

Stranded is likely the softest, fluffiest iteration of the rather tragic Green Arrow genesis we’ve seen yet. To be clear, this is because the comic was designed to be perused by beginner-level readers and not to scar the nation’s youth. However, the reframing of a once-depressing tale as an optimistic story for kids may have accidentally, or purposefully, brought out the best attributes of its title character. Drawn with beautiful simplicity by Bell Hosalla, the plot sees Oliver, at only 13 years of age, survive a terrible plane crash alongside his dad and a fellow father-son duo, the brutish business associate Sebastian and his angry offspring, Tyler. The adults are severely wounded, and Tyler is mostly inept, so Oliver must find a way to overcome his situation. In a traditional account, this is where things would go downhill for the family, with a dying Robert Queen leaving his son to survive alone on an island for years to come. Instead, Deneen puts a more positive spin on the narrative.

Not yet a superhero, but still wearing a green hoodie, Oliver maintains his faith and never gives up hope. The other characters in the story, especially Tyler, are shown to be less than kind to Oliver before the fateful wreck. He is made fun of for lacking guts and skill, demonstrated by his inability to take the life of an animal on what appears to be an important hunting trip. He desperately wants approval from his father, who refuses to give it to him out of some misguided belief that he’ll grow more without it. But even with all this against him, Oliver is not full of angst, or spite, or self-pity. He chooses instead to help those who wronged him, and does so without ever breaking his own youthful moral code. Ultimately, Ollie proves that his heart was simply bigger than his desire to meet the traditional standards of masculinity. For some, this notion may induce an exaggerated eye-roll, but it’s actually exactly the kind of comic book story young boys should be reading.

With StrandedDeneen displays a redefined type of hero. The type Green Arrow has always been. He makes an effort to prove that you can find ways out of even the most worrisome scenarios without succumbing to violence or anger. In the same spirit that made Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse so wonderful, the message of this book is that a real hero stays true to themselves and always gets back up. Though clearly not the intent, Stranded almost functions as the anti-Arrow. Obviously, it’s strange to compare a short-form comic to a long-form television series, but Stranded soars everywhere Arrow sank. The limited series is a perfect read for any kid looking to get into comics, and does its best to teach all the right lessons along the way.

  • ‘Batwoman’, ‘The Flash’, and Many Other CW Shows Get Early Renewal

‘Batwoman’, ‘The Flash’, and Many Other CW Shows Get Early Renewal

The pandemic has changed up the TV landscape with many shows seeing a postponed release. We are a far cry away from the original September release date. Still, some broadcasters put a lot of trust in their shows even before they even officially aired. Among them, The CW is quite famous for its trend of early renewals. Well, it looks like they have started 2021 with a bang by doing exactly that. Their renewal includes various veteran shows, such as The Flash, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, and Riverdale. Jared Padalecki‘s Walker was picked up for an early second season before it officially aired. Various shows were also renewed for their third or fourth season, such as Batwoman, In the Dark, Legacies, Nancy Drew, and Roswell, New Mexico. Superman & Lois is also getting an additional two episodes for its upcoming season.

CW’s CEO Mark Pedowitz gave the following statement on this early renewal strategy:

Though we’re just a few weeks into the new season, we wanted to get a strategic head start on next season with these early renewals, which allows our production teams to start laying out story arcs and hiring staff, and at the same time, continues to provide us with a strong, stable schedule to build on for next season.

It is hard to deny that the ongoing pandemic might still have a strong influence on this decision. Cinemas are still closed, so TV is the dominant offering for those seeking some escapism. It was the perfect season for streaming services to grow, but it also was an opportunity for channels to gain a wider audience. CW is aiming to expand with some spin-offs, such as one focused on Painkiller from the recently canceled Black Lightning showThere was still the surprising cancelation of Green Arrow and the Canaries, which was going to continue on the show that put the channel’s DC shows on the map. We’ll see what direction the CW heads with its 2021 series and what the future has in store for its DC line-up.

  • First ‘Superman and Lois’ Trailer Released

First ‘Superman and Lois’ Trailer Released

CW has been making some curious changes lately. The Arrowverse seemed to be facing a shift, as many long-term shows were getting canceled. They even decided not to move forward with the Arrow spin-off Green Arrow and the CanariesBlack Lightning and Supergirl are also on their way out, which may signal a new direction. DC has been focusing a lot on adding to HBO Max’s line-up, which may be a reason for this reshuffling. It isn’t the end of an era, as CW has a brand new DC show on the horizon. The CW has greenlit a brand new series titled Superman & Lois. It will focus on the Man of Steel trying to juggle his responsibilities as a hero and taking care of his children. After a long wait, we finally got a first look trailer at the upcoming series, which you can check out here:

The trailer looks very promising. Clark trying to balance his family and superhero life makes for a great premise. Tyler Hoechlin and Elizabeth Tulloch are perfect choices for the CW’s version of the iconic power couple. The series is set within the Arrowverse continuity, so we might see Supergirl or other heroes could make an appearance throughout the season. We already got the tease that David Ramsey’s John Diggle was going to return, and he also directed an episode for the show. The first trailer certainly teases a great new addition to the Arrowverse line-up. We will see how crazy things get as Clark tries to regain some kind of normalcy.

  • ‘Arrow’ Spin-Off ‘Green Arrow and The Canaries’ Cancelled

‘Arrow’ Spin-Off ‘Green Arrow and The Canaries’ Cancelled

One of the first DC superheroes to take the world by storm ended his eight-season with a backdoor pilot. It teased the franchise’s future, which would become the series Green Arrow and The Black Canaries. The show was going to feature the return of Mia Smoak as she takes up the mantle following her father’s death. Oliver Queen in the battle with the Anti-Monitor. She was joined by Laurel and Dinah, the titular Canaries. They would set out to honor the legacy of the original Team Arrow.

Sadly, it got revealed that the planned spin-off would not be moving forward at the CW. It’s been a year of silence on the series development. It’s unknown if it will get shopped to a different platform, such as HBO Max. At this point, however, it seems unlikely considering Marc Guggenheim‘s past comments on the possibility of continuing their story in the form of a comic.

The show was going to answer many unanswered questions from the original show, such as Dinah ending up in the future. There was also the question of who kidnapped Mia’s brother William at the end of the pilot. It looks like these answers will only be revisited in the form of a comic, if at all. It also joins the now canceled CW shows Supergirl and Black Lightning. These will end with their upcoming seasons. It doesn’t look too bright for the DC show’s future on the CW, but it may be a sign that they are more interested in producing HBO Max Originals. Comic characters aren’t easy to adapt, so a bigger budget certainly helps. It isn’t the end of the line for this franchise, but they might be trying to refocus as they move forward.

‘Fortnite’ Leaks Reveal Black Panther, Captain Marvel, Green Arrow & More

Looks like the current season is taking skins from all over the multiverse, as recent leaks for Fornite have revealed a variety of new skins joining this season. During the Game Awards, they revealed Halo‘s Master Chief and two characters from The Walking Dead were joining. Many wondered if we would also see more skins from Marvel after they took over the last season. That is not all, as we also got the reveal for a DC skin based on the popular CW show Arrow will be included in the game based on Stephen Amell‘s iconic rendition. We also get a good look at the entire set, which reveals the character’s iconic punching arrow and a quiver.

She would make complete sense within the wacky Battle Royale world, and it seems there are no limits on who they might include at this point. So, whoever had their fantasy of having Stephen Amell‘s Green Arrow take on Deadpool can do so now. Now that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate announced Sephiroth as their next DLC character, could we see Sora end up on Fornite?

  • David Ramsey Returns to CW’s Arrowverse as John Diggle and a Mystery Character

David Ramsey Returns to CW’s Arrowverse as John Diggle and a Mystery Character

Since the dawn of the Arrowverse, alongside Oliver Queen was his trusted confidant and partner in crime David Ramsey‘s John Diggle. Throughout the series, Diggle would come to take up the mantle of Spartan and became a permanent member of Team Arrow, as he joined Oliver in his crusade across Star City. Towards the end of the recent mega-crossover Crisis on Infinite Earths, we last saw Diggle packing up his things and moving to Metropolis. Shortly before he made his way to a new home, he came into contact with what looked to be Green Lantern Ring. For years it had become a running tease that Diggle would assume the role of a Green Lantern but never came to be but seems all the more likely now.

It looks like David Ramsey will be returning to the Arrowverse to direct and reprise his role as John Diggle in multiple episodes across the network lineup of DC-based series. He will return to direct episodes of The FlashSuperman and LoisSupergirlBatwoman, and even Legends of Tomorrow. Not just that, Ramsey will also be playing a mystery role in his episode on Legends of Tomorrow. Most fans could easily conclude that his role will be that of a Sector-2814 Green Lantern, especially after the tease his story ended on.

While we may not know until he officially returns on screen, it would be great to finally see Diggle assume the title once the Arrowverse makes its long-awaited return in 2021. The Arrowverse suffered some big hits this year. Every production got a delay, and then news broke that fan-favorite shows Supergirl and Black Lightning would come to an end. All this right after the show that started it all officially ended with its eight-season. Perhaps the return of Diggle might be a new beginning for the franchise in the new year.

  • EXCLUSIVE: ‘ARROW’ SEASON 7 TO FEATURE DC VILLAIN JAVELIN

EXCLUSIVE: ‘ARROW’ SEASON 7 TO FEATURE DC VILLAIN JAVELIN

Note: This article was originally published by Charles Murphy at That Hashtag Show on September 13, 2018

We know that the upcoming 7th season of Arrow, set to premiere this fall, will see Oliver Queen behind bars, leaving Team Arrow to pick up the pace. While Oliver is sure to have his hand full in prison with former enemies and some less than friendly guards, we now know the big bad that the rest of the team will be dealing with in addition to the Longbow Hunters. DC Comics villain Javelin is coming to town!

DC Comics have typically portrayed Javelin as a German Olympic athlete and a thorn in the side of Hal Jordan. He’s been given a bit of an update here, but interestingly enough his Olympic origins may still come into play as a link to Team Arrow member Curtis Holt.

Described as smart and ruthless, Leonard Gibbons, aka Javelin, is a French chemical weapons trader. In the midst of a huge ongoing deal, he does business with an undercover Curtis Holt/Mr. Terrific, bringing Team Arrow squarely into the mix. The studio is currently on the lookout for a French-speaking male in his 30s to take on what was described as a “large principle role.”

Certainly a character like Javelin, with his assortment of tricky spear-based weapons and high level of athletic skill fits in just fine in the Arrowverse. We know that Holt was himself an Olympic athlete, having won a bronze in the 2008 decathlon, so it’ll be interesting to see what shared history, if any, the two men have.

Season 7 of Arrow is set to hit the CW on October 15th!
