Some time ago, we learned that Blue Beetle will be heading to HBO Max, as we explore the story of an unlikely hero, Jaime Reyes. He’ll don the suit that has alien origins that will change his life in many new ways. The future Reyes’ Xolo Maridueña appeared alongside the film’s creative team to share a first look at the characters’ design and talks bout his comic past. While we didn’t get our first look at his live-action design, we did get some artwork. Now what stands out is that Kord Industries is quite prominent in the background, which teases the original Blue Beetle potentially having a role in the project.
Streaming services have begun a whole new playing field when it comes to expanding your cinematic universe. Marvel and DC are both capitalizing on the straight-to-consumer system to build these worlds. In the case of DC, HBO Max has become the streaming home for the DCEU with projects like Peacemaker, Batgirl, Static Shock, and Blue Beetlein the works. We recently got the news that actress Leslie Grace is set to star as Barbra Gordon in her own solo, and now it looks like we’ve got our Blue Beetle.
Star of Netflix’s Cobra Kai, Xolo Mariduena, is reportedly in talks to star Jaime Reyes, the third incarnation of the Blue Beetle and will lead his own solo film. The project is set to be directed by Angel Manuel Soto and was written by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer. The project is set to begin production early next year, with John Rickard serving as producer and Zev Foreman as executive producer.
For those unfamiliar with the character, Jaime Reyes follows in the footsteps of Ted Kord, who picked up the mantle of Blue Beetle from Dan Garret. Jaime is different from his predecessors in that the Scarab attached to his back, a piece of tech from an alien species known as the Teach. It allows Jaime to don a suit of armor, and become the Blue Beetle. The character is yet another one from Charlton comics, a group that DC and WB seem keen on adapting lately, with Peacemaker also coming to HBO Max. While it isn’t confirmed, we could see seeds planted and or maybe even Kord show up before Jaimes big debut.
Warner Brothers announced that it would be sending all of its major releases to HBO Max in 2021 back in December. They would also release in open theaters. This was immediately met with mixed emotions when many began to worry that this could hurt theaters even more than the pandemic already did. 2020 saw almost all of its releases delayed with some moving more than once due to the ongoing pandemic. Now Warner Brothers’ new model sees them focusing more on their streaming endeavor.
As the DC Universe begins to expand further and onward, HBO Max could be the universe’s biggest asset. In a recent article from the Los Angeles Times, Warner Bros. Chairman Toby Emmerich talked about their release strategy for 2021 and how they plan to release ten to twelve films in theaters and on HBO Max each. With the recent announcement of Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah as directors on the upcoming Batgirl film came the news that it would release exclusively on HBO Max. Now it seems the upcoming Blue Beetle film will be getting the same treatment and releasing exclusively on HBO Max,
Blue Beetle is set to be direct by Charm City Kings director Angel Manuel Soto and was written by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer. The film will focus on Jaime Reyes, the third person to don the mantle of Blue Beetle and the first to wear the scarab. No release date or casting has been announced for the project.
Charles and Charles talk the week’s biggest news including the Ta-Nehisi Coates-led Superman reboot, the title reveal for Spider-Man 3, our Black Adam scoop the new Loki release date, M.O.D.O.K. and more!
As they continue to develop their slate of DC films, Warner Bros. has signed up director Angel Manuel Soto to helm their upcoming adaptation of Blue Beetle. According to a trade report, Soto’s film will feature Jamie Reyes, making this Warner’s first Latino-led superhero film.
Blue Beetle was first introduced as a Fox Comics character by the name of Dan Garrett back in 1939. The character made his way to Charlton Comics and eventually to DC. Following Garrett, both Ted Kord and Jamie Reyes have filled the shoes of the character, but the film, written by Scarface remake writer Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer will follow Reyes, who assumed the mantle during the 2006 DC event Infinite Crisis. The film has been in development since late 2018 and is looking to begin production this fall.
Initially announced as a direct-to-consumer film for HBO Max, Blue Beetle will tell the story of Jaimie Reyes, played by Xolo Mariduena. Director Angel Manuel Soto will direct based on a script by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer.
When Jaime Reyes stumbles upon the Scarab, a piece of reach technology used to conquer worlds, it attaches itself to Jaime allowing him to don the blue beetle suit and pick up the mantle of the Blue Beetle.
March 2022 saw four new names added to the cast, with George Lopez, Adriana Barraza, Damián Alcázar, and Elpidia Carrillo, from Predator fame, joining the project. Later that same month Academy Award nominee Sharon Stone was said to have joined the project playing Victoria Kord before Academy Award winner Susan Sarandon was cast in the same role just a couple of weeks afterward.
