RUMOR: Jason Sudeikis to Play Ted Kord in ‘Blue Beetle’

While the future of the DC Extended Universe remains unclear, fans are eagerly awaiting the arrival of Jaime Reyes, aka Blue Beetle, on the big screen. In the comics, Jaime is the third to don the mantle of the Blue Beetle, following Ted Kord who obtained the title from Dan Garret, the original Blue Beetle. Since the movie was announced, fans have been curious as to whether or not Ted Kord will be making an appearance in the film. Thanks to a new report, we might finally have an answer.

Listings from a casting agency indicated that the movie, which is currently in production, is looking for a couple of body doubles for June 1st. Of the two images posted by the Bill Marinella Casting company, one is a blurred/edited photo of Jason Sudeikis. In the image, which you can see below, the casting call is for someone who matches the complexion of Sudeikis. Those applying must be between the ages of 20-55, and be between the height of 6′ and 6’1. The casting call is looking to fill the role for June 1st in Atlanta, GA.

Going off the above casting call, it would suggest the comedian is playing none other than Ted Kord. As it stands, though, there is no confirmation of this. It is, of course, worth noting that Susan Sarandon has been cast as Victoria Kord, who is meant to be the antagonist of the film. The character is said to be an original character developed for the film, but her inclusion would suggest an appearance by Ted is likely.

Blue Beetle is set to hit theaters on Aug. 18th, 2023 and will be directed by Angel Manuel Soto. The film stars Xolo Maridueña in the titular role alongside Susan Sarandon, Harvey Guillén, Raoul Max Trujillo, George Lopez, Elpidia Carrillo, Belissa Escobedo, Adriana Barraza, and Damián Alcázar.

Susan Sarandon Joins ‘Blue Beetle’ As Main Villain

One of the most exciting upcoming film’s set within the DC Extended Universe is Blue Beetle. The film will see the debut of Xolo Mariduena as Jaime Reyes in Blue Beetle. The film will follow Mariduena as a teen superhero who comes into possession of a alien scarab that attaches itself to his back and enables him the abhility to summon an exoskeleton suit and array of weapons. Plot details on the film are scarce, but it seems the project has found a new face for its foe.

A new report from The Wrap states that Susan Sarandon is set to join the cast of Blue Beetle in the role of Victoria Kord, an original character created for the film. She will be the main antagonist alongside Raoul Max Trujillo who is set to play the villain Carapax The Indestructible Man.

Just a few weeks back it was announced that Sharon Stone had joined the film in the very same role Sarandon now has. Stone was initially in talks for the role, but it seems things did not work out.

The film will be directed by Angel Manuel Soto with a script from Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer. Mariduena will star alongside George Lopez, Harvey Guillén, Bruna Marquezine, Elpidia Carillo, Adrianna Barraza and Damián Alcázar.

Production on Blue Beetle is set to kick-off sometime this month with a release date currently set for Aug. 18th, 2023.

  • Sharon Stone Joins ’Blue Beetle’ in Villainous Role

Sharon Stone Joins ’Blue Beetle’ in Villainous Role

Sharon Stone is joining the cast of DC’s Blue Beetle.

The news comes courtesy of The Wrap, with the outlet revealing Stone will play the villainous role of Victoria Kord. Per The Wrap, Victoria Kord is a character that has been created for the film. While the character may be an original, the surname of Kord should ring a bell to fans of DC Comics as Ted Kord, a genius billionaire, was the second character to take the name Blue Beetle. The film, which is due in theaters August 18, 2023, will follow Jaimie Reyes, the third Blue Beetle, played by Xolo Mariduena.

Also joining the cast is Raoul Max Trujillo (Mayan M.C.), who plays Carapax the Indestructible Man. Carapax is an archeologist who has ties to Daniel Garrett, the first Blue Beetle, which means we have now mentioned all three Blue Beetles in this article.

Originally intended to debut on HBO Max, Blue Beetle, directed by Angel Miguel Soto, was surprisingly pulled from the service in favor of a theatrical debut.

  • RUMOR: ‘Blue Beetle’ Will Feature Carapax and an Original Foe

RUMOR: ‘Blue Beetle’ Will Feature Carapax and an Original Foe

The DC Extended Universe is about to get a little bit bigger with the arrival of Jaime Reyes, aka the Blue Beetle. Fans are eager to see the third and most popular iteration of the character make his big-screen debut next year. Sadly, we still don’t know a ton regarding the plot of the project. Details on just who Jaime will face in the film are still scarce, but a new rumor may hint at a rather unknown foe.

The Cosmic Circus is reporting that the DC villain Carapax will be making his live-action debut in the film alongside what seems to be an original character named Victoria Kord. Of course, that name would seem familiar as that is the last name of Ted Kord, mentor to Jaime Reyes, and the second person to don the mantle of Blue Beetle. Victora Kord reportedly also has connections to Bruna Marquezine’s character, who is only known as Jenny.

Conrad Carapax was an archeologist and rival of Daniel Garret, the first Blue Beetle. He traveled to Pago Island where he found the remains of a lab that once belonged to Jarvis Kord, the uncle of Ted Kord. He was killed when trying to activate a robot but ended up fusing his mind with it. Victoria could possibly have some sort of link to Jarvis, or maybe be a gender-bent version of the character. Jarvis spent his time on the island-building robot he intended to use to take over the world. Victoria being in an antagonist role alongside Carapax could hint at this change.

  • George Lopez, Adriana Barraza And More Join ‘Blue Beetle’

George Lopez, Adriana Barraza And More Join ‘Blue Beetle’

It looks like the cast for Blue Beetle continues to grow with the DC film adding some big names to its cast. The film is eyeing an August 2023 release and has now added George Lopez, Adriana Barraza, Elpidia Carrilo, and Damián Alcázar to its cast. They join Xolo Maridueña who will take on the leading role of Jaime Reyes, who will end up turning into the interstellar hero Blue Beetle through the help of a strange device attached to his back.

The cast round out the Reyes family with Lopez as Uncle Rudy, Alcázar taking on the role of Alberto, Barraza‘s Nana, and Carrillo as Rocio. The only other member cast so far was Bellisa Escobedo as Milagro. Director Angel Manuel Soto offered some insight into his approach to ensuring that the Reyes family consisted of Mexican and Mexican-American talent:

Initially, my goal with finding the family was to be able to have an authentic group of people, not just as authentic on the Latino side, but authentic on the accents and authentic on the experience overall, it was very important for me to have the elders in the family to be from Mexico. And more than just being from Mexico is honoring those amazing beloved actors from Mexico that have paved the way not just in Latin American cinema, but also crossing over to the Anglo Saxon community and Latin American community in the United States

    Angel Manuel Soto

It’s a great approach to not only keep the family dynamic authentic but also to highlight the characters’ roots. Comic Book films have been becoming the center of more representation in cinema, and it’s great to see the talent reflect that. Bruna Marquezine and Harvey Guillén, who recently also joined another DC series, Harley Quinn, as Nightwing, also round out the cast.

  • ‘Blue Beetle’ Adds Bruna Marquezine and Belissa Escobedo

‘Blue Beetle’ Adds Bruna Marquezine and Belissa Escobedo

Things seem to be ramping up behind the scenes on Blue Beetle, as the film continues to add more names to its cast. It was just announced that What We Do In The Shadows star Harvey Guillén has joined the Xolo Mariduena-led project in a key role. Yet, they aren’t stopping there, as a few more names have just been announced. The Wrap is reporting that Bruna Marquezine and Belissa Escobedo have joined Blue Beetle. Marquezine is reportedly playing the female lead and love interest to Mariduena‘s Jaime. Her character will be named Penny. Escobedo is set to play Milagros Reyes, Jaimes’ younger sister.

Belissa Escobedo is best known for her role in American Horror Stories and has just finished filming on the sequel for Hocus Pocus 2. Bruna Marquezine has worked on a variety of projects, which include God Save the King and Conquest. Angel Manuel Soto will direct the film with a script from Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer who previously wrote Universal’s Scarface reboot. The film is set to release on August 18th, 2023. Initially, it was a streaming exclusive for HBO Max but was changed to theatrical to the delight of many.

Blue Beetle will follow the third incarnation of the character, Jaime Reyes. The character made his first debut back in 2006 during the Infinite Crisis event before going on to get his own solo title. We know very little about how the upcoming film will adapt the character’s origins, or even if they might mix it up with hints at him getting a mentor in the form of a former Blue Beetle.

  • ‘What We Do in The Shadows’ Star Harvey Guillén in talks to Join ‘Blue Beetle’

‘What We Do in The Shadows’ Star Harvey Guillén in talks to Join ‘Blue Beetle’

Not too long ago, we reported that Blue Beetle is set to begin production soon, as it seemingly was eyeing to potentially kick-off early 2022. We have not heard much on the rest of the casting outside of its titular star Xolo Mariduena. Luckily, the wait has come to an end, as Deadline is now reporting that What We Do In The Shadows star Harvey Guillén is currently in talks to join the upcoming DCEU film in a key role. Sadly, they won’t give away who he is playing as the story remains under wraps.

Jaime Reyes is the third and most popular character to take on the mantle of the Blue Beetle. This iteration started fighting crime after a Blue Scarab of alien origin attached itself to his back. It allows him to manifest exoskeleton armor and multiple types of weapons, which includes sonic emitters and energy cannons. It remains unknown if the mentor and previous Blue Beetle, Ted Kord will make an appearance in the film, but DC Fandome concept art may have hinted at his involvement.

The film was previously set to be one of the first exclusive DC films for HBO Max but a while back had its release strategy switched up. The studio instead decided the film would better fit a theatrical release instead of direct to streaming. Blue Beetle is set to be directed by Angel Manuel Soto, best known for his work on the HBO film Charm City Kings with a script from Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer. The film is currently set to hit theaters on August 18th, 2023.

  • Xolo Maridueña Already Tried on the Blue Beetle Suit

Xolo Maridueña Already Tried on the Blue Beetle Suit

Warner Bros. has been busy preparing for their next line of DC films. While The Batman is their next major release, they’ve been busy preparing their other projects, such as the once HBO Max exclusive, Blue Beetle. Actor Xolo Maridueña will take on the title role in the Angel Manuel Soto-directed film, which is now heading for a theatrical release. Little is known about the project, but in a recent interview on the latest season of Cobra Kai, the actor confirmed that they’ve already tested out the suit in an interview with USA Today.

We’ve done two suit fittings. They’re hoping that I get more buff by the time we actually start filming. But I’ve seen the suit, and it looks awesome.

    Xolo Maridueña

He’s certainly excited about the role and it’s great to hear that the suit will have practical elements. It won’t be an easy design to adapt even if the concept art shared during DC FanDome is quite promising. We can’t wait to see how they bring the organic living suit to life and if they’ll even play around with the fact that Jaime Reyes’ design originally doesn’t include a nose when he’s in his suit. It’ll be interesting to see how they bring that element to life.

  • ‘Blue Beetle’ Moves From an HBO Max Release to a Theatrical Release

‘Blue Beetle’ Moves From an HBO Max Release to a Theatrical Release

In a surprising move, Warner Bros. and DC have switched the release for the forthcoming Blue Beetle film. Originally announced as an HBO Max exclusive, joining the likes of Black Canary and Batgirl, Blue Beetle is now heading to the big screen.

Late Thursday evening, the studio revealed Blue Beetle will hit theaters on Aug. 18, 2023. Blue Beetle was first developed as an original film for HBO Max alongside Batgirl, which is currently in production for the streaming service. It’s unclear as what caused the studio to switch its release strategy, however, Blue Beetle will mark a huge milestone for the DC Extended Universe as it’ll mark the first Latino-led DC hero film.

Angel Manuel Soto is directing Blue Beetle from Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer’s screenplay. Cobra Kai breakout Xolo Maridueña plays Jaime Reyes, who gains superpowers when he encounters alien armor.

As it stands, the other previously announced HBO Max films – Batgirl, Black Canary and Static Shock – look to remain HBO Max exclusive titles for the time being. Also in the works on HBO Max are series such as PeacemakerConstantine, Justice League DarkZatanna, The Batman Spinoffs (Penguin and GCPD) and Madame X.

  • REPORT: ‘Blue Beetle’ Eyeing Early 2022 Production Start

REPORT: ‘Blue Beetle’ Eyeing Early 2022 Production Start

The DC Expanded Universe continues to expand as it plots more and more films like Batgirl, Zatanna, and even Blue Beetle. The latter will follow Jaime Reyes, the third, most recent, and most popular character to wield the mantle of Blue Beetle. Jaime is set to be played by the Cobra Kai‘s Xolo Maridueña, perfect casting for what’s surely shaping up to be many peoples most anticipated comic book films.

Not much is known about the project, as it’s yet to add any other talent to its cast. It seems like that could be changing very soon as it seems production on the film could begin in the first quarter of 2022. A new Production Weekly listing has the film set to begin filming in Georgia sometime early next year. Usually these types of dates from production weekly are taken with a grain of salt, but director Angel Manuel Soto has added some fuel to the fire by retweeting the news on his Twitter account.

There’s always a chance this production start date may change, but it seems Soto is anticipating an early 2022 start date if he also openly retweets it. The film will release as an HBO Max Original film but currently has no release date. The film is one of many upcoming DCEU films set to debut on the streaming platform in an interesting move to expand its shared DC universe from WB.

Jaime Reyes is the first Blue Beetle to actually don the scarab and wears the exoskeleton armor created by the Reach. It’ll be interesting to see how the film honors the past Beetles as it seems Ted Kord is poised to play a larger role in the film based on the concept art we saw at DC Fandome.
