  • ‘Black Adam’ Opens to $67 Million Domestically

‘Black Adam’ Opens to $67 Million Domestically

As expected, Black Adam took the top spot at the box office this weekend. The DC flick earned $67 million at the domestic box office. That’s enough for Black Adam to mark the biggest opening of leading man Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson‘s career – a title previously held by the Fast & Furious spinoff, Hobbs and Shaw at $60 million.

Overseas, the movie seems to have done slightly better. Black Adam is said to have earned $73 million from 77 international markets. That would be the film’s opening haul for the weekend to $140 million. This number includes $6.1 million from the United Kingdom, $5.3 million from Mexico and $4.9 million from Brazil. The film’s worldwide opening is a bit higher than initial estimates which had it eyeing a $135 million worldwide.

Unfortunately, though, Black Adam still has a hill to climb. With a production budget rumored to be between $195 million to $200 million, Black Adam will need legs in the coming weeks. The film currently has a rotten rating of 40% on Rotten Tomatoes and reactions from fans have been incredibly mixed. Next weekend will see the release of the horror film, Prey for the Devil, which could easily bite into Black Adam‘s box office haul.

  • Thursday Previews Box Office for ‘Black Adam’ Hint at a Disappointing Opening Weekend

Thursday Previews Box Office for ‘Black Adam’ Hint at a Disappointing Opening Weekend

Black Adam’s projected opening weekend domestic box office numbers continue along a disappointing downward trend. Dwayne Johnson’s anti-hero film, which has been in development for 15 years, was originally predicted to pull in $65M+ with some estimates as high as $75-80M. Now, after the numbers from the Thursday previews have arrived, it looks like it would take a pretty serious course correction to get to $60M.

Gitesh Pandya of Box Office Guru shared the official box office take from Thursday’s showings which came in just under $8M.

As Pandya points out, the Tom Hardy-led Venom films took in $10M and $11.6M, respectively, ahead of $80M and $90M opening weekends. DC’s last theatrical release, The Batman, opened to $134M when it opened in March of 2022.

As of now, it looks like Black Adam’s box office has fallen victim to mixed reviews from the initial wave or critics who screened the film ahead of its wide release. Given Johnson’s star power and the less-than-secret return of Henry Cavill as Superman in a post-credit scene, it’s likely that DC Films was hoping the film would open between $80-100M. With Black Panther: Wakanda Forever set to follow Black Adam into theaters in just three weeks, it’s unlikely the latter will have legs making the first two weekends more significant than normal.

  • ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ Tracking for $175 Million Domestic Opening

‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ Tracking for $175 Million Domestic Opening

With less than a month until Black Panther: Wakanda Forever hits theaters, the Marvel Studios sequel is hitting tracking in a big way. The Hollywood Reporter has revealed the sequel to 2018’s Black Panther is on track for a $175 million opening stateside. That number is pretty in line with the projection provided by Box Office Pro earlier in the month – $180 million to $200 million.

That number is slightly lower than Black Panther‘s $202 million domestic debut in 2018. However, that was pre-pandemic, and the box office has struggled to regain that traction since. Thankfully, superhero films – and a few other blockbusters – have been least impacted by COVID-19, with films like The Batman and Spider-Man: No Way Home still managing to perform well at the box office. As the release of Wakanda Forever nears, it’s entirely possible estimates for the movie will continue to grow.

The first movie starred the excellent Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa and quickly went on to become a cultural phenomenon after being the first Marvel Studios film to feature a predominantly Black cast. The journey to Wakanda Forever has been a difficult one following the unexpected death of Boseman. Director Ryan Coogler, who co-wrote the sequel with Joe Robert Cole, managed to craft a sequel that both honors Boseman’s legacy as T’Challa, while also pushing the franchise forward.

Wakanda Forever is set to hit theaters on Nov. 11th. Tickets are on sale now.

  • ‘Black Adam’ Now Eyeing $60 Million Opening

‘Black Adam’ Now Eyeing $60 Million Opening

Earlier in the month, tracking for Black Adam had the Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson-led flick looking at a $70 million opening, with the potential to go even higher. Now, following less-than-stellar reviews, it looks like those estimates have dwindled a bit. Box office experts currently have Black Adam on track for a $60 million domestic opening.

In the Pandemic-era, that’s not necessarily a bad number. However, Black Adam is said to have cost $195 million to produce. With such a hefty price tag, Black Adam will need to legs at the box office and hope that word of mouth among audiences is better. While that is still higher than 2021’s The Suicide Squad, which opened to $26 million while simultaneously debuting on HBO Max, it’s far behind The Batman‘s $134 million opening. That film, of course, featured one of DC’s most famous characters, the Caped Crusader. Black Adam does not have that same advantage, though.

Black Adam will easily defeat Universal’s Ticket to Paradise starring Julia Roberts and George Clooney, which is expected to open with $15 million from 3,500 cinemas. It should also easily overtake the poorly reviewed Halloween Ends, which opened with $41 million last weekend. As is often the case with estimates, though, it’s entirely possible Black Adam could open lower than expected. Worldwide, the movie is only expected to clear $135 million worldwide. With a 55% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, it’s possible word of mouth hurts the film, but it’s also a superhero film, so that should help push it forward some.

  • ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ Tracking for Massive Debut

‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ Tracking for Massive Debut

With less than a month until release, Marvel Studios’ Black Panther sequel, Wakanda Forever, is tracking for a massive debut. Box Office Pro has unveiled the latest tracking for the film, and as it stands, Wakanda Forever could potentially set a new November record.

Box Office Pro believes Wakanda Forever could open between $180 million and $225 million. Working in the film’s favor, of course, is that Black Panther was a phenomenon and demolished records with its $202 million domestic debut. The character later went on to become a big part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, appearing in both Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, and later in an episode of What If…? on Disney+. With a huge gap between films, fans have been eagerly awaiting Wakanda Forever‘s release, helping to push the film’s trailer views past those of its predecessor.

Of course, given that we are still very much in a pandemic, it’s possible the film could open lower than expected. The box office has struggled since COVID first hit in 2019, and it’s still struggling to return to normal. Moviegoers don’t seem as ready to head to theaters like they once did. It doesn’t help either that Thor: Love and Thunder had such a mixed reception, or that many feel as though there’s too much content hailing from Marvel Studios thanks to Disney+.

  • ‘Halloween Ends’ is Targeting a $50 Million-Plus Opening

‘Halloween Ends’ is Targeting a $50 Million-Plus Opening

Halloween Ends might be releasing simultaneously in theaters and on Peacock, but that doesn’t look to be hurting its box office potential. Current estimates have Halloween Ends looking at a healthy $50 million to $55 million opening weekend. Should those numbers hold, Halloween Ends will be the first movie to earn over $50 million in its opening weekend since July’s Thor: Love and Thunder.

The film’s predecessor, Halloween Kills, also released simultaneously in theaters and on Peacock, and that film managed to secure a $49 million opening last October. That was an impressive feat on its own in the midst of a Pandemic. Ends, however, looks ready to benefit from monopolizing the Imax and other premium large formats. While Halloween Ends looks to overtake Kills, it’s doubtful it’ll surpass 2018’s Halloween which pulled in $77 during its opening weekend. Working in that film’s favor was the fact that it was released exclusively in theaters during a COVID-free time.

Halloween Ends is directed by David Gordon Green and stars Jamie Lee Curtis, Andi Matichak, Kyle Richards, and Rohan Campbell. The movie hits theaters on Friday, October 14th.

  • ‘Smile’ Surpasses $100 Million at Worldwide Box Office

‘Smile’ Surpasses $100 Million at Worldwide Box Office

Paramount has plenty to Smile about these days. Its latest horror release, Smile, has officially passed the $100 million mark at the box office. In two weeks of release, the film has managed to earn $102.3 million worldwide; that’s with $55.5 million at the domestic box office and $46.8 million from the international box office.

While most films often suffer a sophomore slump, Smile has continued to have an impressive hold at the box office. In its second weekend, the film retained the top spot with $13 million. That was enough to earn the movie the second-best hold ever for an R-rated horror movie in its second weekend, with a drop of just -22%.

Noting the film’s accomplishments at the box office, Brian Robbins, the CEO and President of Paramount Pictures, noted the studio always believed the movie had cinematic potential. “The moment we saw this film we knew it had immense cinematic potential, and we’re beyond thrilled and proud to see that audiences around the world agree wholeheartedly and are turning out in record numbers,” he said. “Thank you to our director, Parker Finn, our creative partners and our production team for delivering a fantastically terrifying movie; and thank you to our global marketing and distributions teams for hitting it out of the park once again.”

Directed by newcomer Parker FinnSmile stars Sosie Bacon and focuses on a therapist who meets a graduate student that has recently witnessed a gruesome suicide. Soon after, she begins experiencing frightening experiences she can’t explain. In order to survive, she’ll need to confront her past in order to escape her horrifying new reality. The film also stars Caitlin StaseyKyle GallnerRobin Weigert and Kal Penn.

  • ‘Avatar’ Re-Release Earns Over $70M at Global Box Office

‘Avatar’ Re-Release Earns Over $70M at Global Box Office

The re-release of Avatar in the buildup to the highly anticipated James Cameron-directed sequel has been a large financial success for Disney and 20th Century Studios. The past weekend alone has brought in nearly $4 million from 51 different international markets. This moves the total earned to $23.3 million across North America and $71.9 million globally. Overall, this should be a promising sign that Avatar: The Way of Water can become another major needle-mover at the box office. It also has the best chance to beat out the current 2022 earnings record-holder in Top Gun: Maverick.

The success of the Avatar is good news for Disney in relation to the unmitigated flop that has been David O. Russell’s Amsterdam. Despite the star-studded cast led by Christian Bale, Margot Robbie, and John David Washington, the film has bombed internationally only earning $3.5 million in 30 international markets. And the domestic release has barely been any better in raking in only $6.5 million in North America’s opening weekend.

The biggest winners at the box office currently have been in the romantic comedy and horror genres. Ticket to Paradise, starring George Clooney and Julia Roberts, has met a respectable $60 million in international box office earnings. The movie continues the trend of romantic comedies mildly returning to prominence at theaters (i.e. The Lost City and Marry Me), though that is in relation to how much the genre has recently been in dire straits theatrically and is assumedly more boosted from the massive A-list talent starring in them.

Meanwhile, Paramount Pictures’ Smile has been the largest winner at the box office having earned $17.5 million globally, which is up 19% from its premiere. This totals the global earnings to approximately $90 million, which is a massive boon with the $17 million budget. Overall, it’s continued the trend of Paramount being far and away the biggest winner in the theatrical film industry in 2022.

  • ‘Smile’ Aiming for $13+ Million Second Weekend

‘Smile’ Aiming for $13+ Million Second Weekend

Paramount’s Smile looks set to take the top spot at the box office for its second weekend. The horror flick is currently on track for at least $13 million in its second weekend following $3.85 million in sales on Friday.

Directed by newcomer Parker Finn, Smile pulled in an impressive $22 million in its opening weekend. A feat made all the more impressive considering the film had a modest budget of $17 million. Smile stars Sosie Bacon and focuses on a therapist who meets a graduate student that has recently witnessed a gruesome suicide. Soon after, she begins experiencing frightening experiences she can’t explain. In order to survive, she’ll need to confront her past in order to escape her horrifying new reality. The film also stars Caitlin StaseyKyle GallnerRobin Weigert and Kal Penn.

Should estimates hold, Smile’s $13 million second weekend will be enough to hold off newcomer, Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile, from Sony. That film is currently on track for an $11 million opening across 4,350 theaters. It’s an adaptation of the 1965 Bernard Waber book that tells the story of a Crocodile named Lyle that happily lives with the Primm family in New York City, until a neighbor tries to send him to a zoo. The film stars Javier Bardem and singer Shawn Mendes.

  • ‘Black Adam’ Currently Tracking for $70M-$75M Opening

‘Black Adam’ Currently Tracking for $70M-$75M Opening

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson‘s Black Adam is flying high in current projections. The New Line and Warner Bros. Discovery film is currently eyeing an opening between $70 million and $75 million. Should those numbers hold, Johnson will easily score his biggest opening as a leading man – not including the Fast & Furious films, of course.

Black Adam is set to debut on October 21st and is reportedly on track with Sony’s Venom flick, which went on to earn $80 million in October 2018. As is always the case, projections are not concrete and countless things could alter a film’s box office release including word of mouth. With the pandemic still ongoing and theaters struggling to recover, Black Adam‘s estimates are thought to be on the lower end but an $80 million opening isn’t entirely out of question.

The road to get to this point was a rather long and bumpy one for the actor. Johnson was initially cast as Black Adam in November 2007 and finally got to suit up as the character when Black Adam entered production last year. Now, with Warner Bros. Discovery looking to revamp its DC output and Black Adam being one of only two films released by the studio in the fourth quarter, Johnson’s Black Adam has a chance to chance to help build the DC Universe going forward. The actor has been heavily promoting the film, having made an appearance at San Diego Comic-Con in July, where Discovery treated fans to a sneak peek at the film. He also introduced a new trailer for Black Adam at the Los Angeles Rams-Buffalo Bills game which helped to kick off the 2022 NFL regular season.

Starring alongside Johnson in Black Adam are Aldis Hodge as Hawkman, Quintessa Swindell as Cyclone, Noah Centineo as Atom Smasher and Pierce Brosnan as Doctor Fate. Black Adam is directed by Jaume Collet-Serra from a script by Adam Sztykiel, Rory Haines and Sohrab Noshirvani.
