  • ‘Avatar: The Way Of Water’ Eyeing $150M-$175M+ Opening

‘Avatar: The Way Of Water’ Eyeing $150M-$175M+ Opening

Avatar: The Way of Water, the long-awaited sequel to 2009’s Avatar, has entered box office tracking. The film is currently projected to open at $150 million domestically, however, tracking has the movie eyeing an opening closer to $175 million. As if that wasn’t a big enough opening, some rivals believe the movie will open to $200 million.

While those numbers are about on par with the likes of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, that’s well ahead of the original film’s $77 million opening. It remains to be seen whether or not, like Avatar, The Way of Water has legs. The original film wasn’t frontloaded like most blockbuster films – namely superhero films – and had impressive legs at the box office. To date, Avatar has $2.7 billion at the worldwide box office.

Working in The Way of Water‘s favor, too, is that it has managed to secure a China release. As of late, most blockbusters have forgone a release in China, having failed to secure approval for release. The Way of Water will release day and date in China with domestic. The first film earned an impressive $260 million at the China box office back in 2009, thanks in part to both IMAX and 3D.

Tickets for The Way of Water are on sale now. It hits theaters on December 16th.

  • ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ Crosses $300 Million Domestically

‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ Crosses $300 Million Domestically

As Black Panther: Wakanda Forever prepares to enter its third weekend, the superhero flick has managed to achieve another big box office milestone. After earning $9.5 million at the box office on Tuesday, the movie has officially surpassed the $300 million mark stateside. The film’s domestic haul is currently sitting at $303.7 million. It has now become the seventh film to surpass $300 million domestically this year, joining the likes of Top Gun: Maverick, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Jurassic World: Dominion, Minions: The Rise of Gru, The Batman and Thor: Love and Thunder.

Heading into the weekend, Wakanda Forever is currently projected to pull in another $40 million, which should keep it atop the box office. The only real competition the film faces is from another Disney title, Strange World, which is expected to pull in around $30 million in its opening weekend. That’s on the lower side for Strange World, as Disney’s Encanto did $40.5 million at the same time last year.

  • ‘Wakanda Forever’ Faces Harsh Friday Drop, But Still Set to Dominate the Weekend

‘Wakanda Forever’ Faces Harsh Friday Drop, But Still Set to Dominate the Weekend

It definitely looks like Marvel Studios’ projects are quite frontloaded in their release, as even Black Panther Wakanda Forever with an A CinemaScore faced a harsh Friday-to-Friday drop. It pulled in between $17.9M and stands at a chance of making up to $70M. It’s definitely a harsh 79% drop but not the worst that Marvel Studios has seen this year, as Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness dropped by 81% on its second Friday. It’s even lower than Thor: Love and Thunder‘s 80% and not too far from Black Adam’s 72%. Perhaps it’s a general genre trend in a market with less to offer.

As Deadline points out, there’s a chance it’ll make up to $70M and could stand at a 65% drop for its second weekend total. At that rate, it’s only around 3% lagging behind Multiverse of Madness, which is massive considering it was a prime summer release in May. Plus, Thanksgiving and Black Friday are around the corner which could give it a massive boost with very little competition. So, it does seem safe to assume it’ll hold the top spot going into its third weekend.

The Black Panther sequel already passed $400M worldwide and could be moving similarly to the previous entry. For those wondering if it’ll pass the billion-dollar mark: it doesn’t seem like a sure thing but if it holds after this weekend there’s still a chance it could outdo the Doctor Strange sequel. Even if some want to call this “the end of Marvel” once again, the films are still financially doing better than most and after much-calling fatigue since even after Avengers: Endgame‘s release. It’s the kind of fatigue many others would dream about.

  • ‘Wakanda Forever’ Eyeing Strong $72M+ Second Weekend

‘Wakanda Forever’ Eyeing Strong $72M+ Second Weekend

There’s been a lot of debate on the success of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever at the box office, mostly due to it ending up lower than Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Many believed this might be the sign that Marvel won’t have a billion hit this year, but the box office is quite fiscal and there are many more elements at play. All eyes are currently on its second weekend to see how the film holds with a $181M opening weekend, especially after the previous two Marvel Studios releases have hit some sharp drops.

As of now, it seems that predictions have the film opening to $72M with upwards of $80M also a possibility. Any drop between 55% to 60% would be seen as a major win and a great showcase of that A CinemaScore the film scored in comparison to other Marvel titles of the year. The pandemic hasn’t been kind to most releases and with only a few exceptions really catapulting beyond expectations, mostly Top Gun: Maverick, Marvel has been the most dominant sure-fire opening scorer at the box office.

The film did end up going lower on Monday than even Thor: Love and Thunder as it pulled in $11M but did tick up to $12.6M on Tuesday. Yet, the film also isn’t a summer release like the previous two Marvel films which makes a world of difference when it comes to its performance during the week. Plus, it’s a much longer film than previous entries which also means fewer available screenings per day playing a key factor in its performance. So, it’s still hard to say how the weekend goes but predictions have been difficult even s the pandemic slowed down, as we’re seeing more variation in how films perform. Even with that, it’s likely to reach $400M worldwide in no time.

The original Black Panther had a very impressive 44.7% decline and it’s unclear to say this film could do the same. It doesn’t have the coveted A+ CinemaScore its previous iteration had and it also had a smaller opening, not too surprising given the challenges this film had to face and the new release slot. It’s only the seventh film to pass $200M domestically and that is definitely a good sign for Marvel Studios, as it pushed Disney passed $3B total gross for the year, beating last year. With little competition until Avatar: The Way of Water in mid-December, the film could have a chance at proving its legs to at least close in on a billion. If predictions are right, it has a decent chance but anything can change once the weekend rolls around.

  • ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ Kicks Off Overseas with $10M+ on First Day

‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ Kicks Off Overseas with $10M+ on First Day

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is here to save the box office.

The long-awaited sequel to 2018’s Black Panther began hitting theaters today, and current estimates have the film opening to $10 million overseas. For those curious about where that places the sequel regarding other superhero flicks, that’s well ahead of Black Adam (225%) and The Batman (45%). It is, however, lower than the original Black Panther by 27% and Thor: Love and Thunder by 31%. The original Black Panther, of course, was pre-pandemic and Love and Thunder had the summer box office working in its favor.

The movie opened in France, Germany, Italy and Korea – among other markets – on Wednesday and opened in the top spot in all markets. France led the way with $2.2 million, which makes for the 3rd highest opening day of 2022, while it opened to $1.4 million in Korea. Indonesia and Germany both saw the film pull in $900k, while Thailand took in $800k.

The film hits Latin America markets today, and so far, it’s doing good business with $4 million — which is not included in the $10 million total above. The film, still in previews, is currently No. 1 across the region, including both Brazil and Mexico.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever kicks off its run stateside tonight via previews, with a wider release set for Friday. The latest estimates have the film looking at a $365 million opening at the worldwide box office, although that could always change.

  • ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ Eyeing Massive $365M Opening

‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ Eyeing Massive $365M Opening

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is set to open huge at the box office this weekend. The sequel to 2018’s massively successful Black Panther is eyeing a $365 million worldwide opening. That includes a projected domestic between $175M-$185M and $180 million internationally. Those numbers would put Wakanda Forever on track for an opening between $355M to $365M.

Should those numbers hold, that’ll give Wakanda Forever the third highest debut of the pandemic following fellow Marvel movies, Spider-Man: No Way Home ($568M) and Doctor Strange In the Multiverse of Madness ($429M). Unsurprisingly, box office experts expect Wakanda Forever to dominate the box office for some time. With little to no competition, Wakanda Forever could realistically dominate until Avatar: The Way of Water releases on Dec. 16.

Since estimates came online, Wakanda Forever has been consistently tracking for an opening North of $175 million. With positive word of mouth, it’s entirely possible Wakanda Forever‘s box office haul will only continue to climb.

  • ‘One Piece Film Red’ More Than Triples ‘Stampede’s Entire Domestic Box Office on Opening Day

‘One Piece Film Red’ More Than Triples ‘Stampede’s Entire Domestic Box Office on Opening Day

It’s looking good for Black Adam to top the box office once again. The film is showing a bit more of its Dwayne Johnson-like hold after seeing some bigger drops throughout the week. As it stands, the film is likely to end its second weekend with $17M. The biggest advantage of this DC film lies in the fact that there’s no real competition so far and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is surely going to change that once it releases next weekend with an already impressive $175M+ opening weekend prediction.

Hot on its heels is One Piece Film Red, which has finally been released stateside. It’s currently pulling in $10M+ from 2,410 locations. It’s pretty much performing as expected by Crunchyroll, its distributor but sadly it’s not going to pass Demon Slayer: Mugen Train‘s record which pulled in $21M domestically. Still, the film pulled in an A CinemaScore and had a 75% viewership between the ages of 18 to 34, which highlights an interesting trend.

One should consider that this film is a spinoff storyline based around the latest events of a 1,000+ chapter manga series. As many believed only long-time readers would be drawn into the latest entry, One Piece might be drawing in a new generation of readers already. It should also be highlighted that Red pulled in 4.8M on Friday, which is more than three times what Stamped pulled in 2019. Not just it’s domestic opening but its entire run which was around 1.3M at the time. So, this is quite the win for a franchise that started in 1997.

  • ‘Black Adam’ Passes $250M Worldwide

    ‘Black Adam’ Passes $250M Worldwide

It looks like Black Adam broke the frontloading curse internationally that has seemingly haunted most projects in the superhero genre. Yet, it did face a steeper drop domestically, especially when compared to Dwayne Johnson‘s usual marketability. The film isn’t breaking any records or shifting the hierarchy of power at the box office, but it’s still doing well.

Now, the film has added $39M internationally, which marks a 45% drop and now puts it at $139M. Halloween hasn’t always been a big pull as Black Adam domestically drops by 59% in its second weekend with $27.7M. Now, it’s certainly not as high as the big opening Marvel movies of this year but when compared to Johnson’s projects like Rampage with 44% and San Andreas with 53%, it does make a difference.

Still, the film has now passed $250M which is no small feat and the 10-day gross is ahead of his biggest release with Hobbs and Shaw, which banked off of the success of the Fast and Furious franchise. So, while the drop was bigger than his usual fare, it still is performing well. For now, the film seems to leg out and could end with around $165M domestically once it ends its run in theaters, though its going beyond $400M worldwide may depend on a China release.

  • ‘Black Adam’ to Top Box Office for Second Weekend

‘Black Adam’ to Top Box Office for Second Weekend

With a quiet Halloween weekend ahead, Black Adam looks set to top the box office for a second weekend. Only one other film will be released wide this weekend as Lionsgate is set to release Prey for the Devil, giving the Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson film room to dominate at the box office.

The movie opened to an okay $67 million last weekend. In its second weekend, the film is expected to earn another $28 million to $31 million, which will help it to surpass $100 million at the domestic box office. Should those numbers hold, that would put its decline in line with Shazam!‘s. While Prey for the Devil is projected to debut to $7 million or $8 million. The movie is set to play in 2,900 North American locations over the weekend. With the exception of Halloween Ends, horror films have been overperforming at the box office. Depending on word of mouth, it is possible Prey for the Devil overperforms – much like Barbarian and Smile.

Of course, Prey for the Devil will also need to beat out the Julia Roberts and George Clooney-led Ticket for Paradise. As of now, that movie is projected to take in another $8 million to $9 million over the weekend.

  • ‘Black Adam’ Pulls in Fall’s Strongest Weekday at the Domestic Box Office

‘Black Adam’ Pulls in Fall’s Strongest Weekday at the Domestic Box Office

The fall has not been kind to the box office, as there have been barely any releases to keep cinemas afloat. Yet, there’s a lot of hope that Black Adam has a chance to do exactly that and it does seem like the latest DC flick is doing numbers for Dwayne Johnson‘s usual fare. While the weekend went beyond the initial expectations with a B+ CinemaScore, it still had a strong Monday showing.

Pulling in $67M over the weekend, the film has the best weekday release for this fall season with $4.5M, which is ahead of Smile‘s $2.98M on a Tuesday. As of now, the film stands at $71.5M total in four days. The release also beat last year’s Halloween Kills‘ $2.7M and Dune‘s $1.75M, which was released on Peacock and HBO Max alongside its theatrical release.

The film also manages to pass other Dwayne Johnson-led projects like Central Intelligence with $4M, Jumanji: Next Level‘s $3.58M, Jungle Cruise‘s $3.7M, and others. It only hasn’t beaten out Hobbs and Shaw, which leads his weekday numbers with $5.87M and San Andreas‘ $4.8M. Yet, the film is already ahead of the Fast and Furious spinoff and will be the ultimate test of just how much staying power his film has with Black Panther: Wakanda Forever on the horizon ready to take a big bite out of its omentum.
