Following the ending of the Skywalker Saga on the big screen and The Mandalorian‘s tremendous success on Disney+, Lucasfilm is getting ready for one of its biggest years yet. Boba Fett’s return in The Book of Boba Fett will premier later this year and it will go well into 2022. As for Din Djarin, he will also be back in season 3 of The Mandalorian. But it seems to be the return of fan-favorite characters Obi-Wan Kenobi and Cassian Andor, last seen on the big screen, that keeps getting the biggest amount of attention.
Both characters will lead their own Disney+ show, with Andor, a 12-episode series, set to debut earlier in the year. Lead actor Diego Luna, making his return to the Star Wars universe following 2016’s Rogue One, when addressing the show doesn’t shy away from just how excited he is to bring the character back, and the possibilities that might come with it. The interconnectivity we often witness in Star Wars, as previsouly reported, will most likely allow for several familiar faces to show up either in brief cameos or slighty bigger roles. Luna, while speaking to Deadline, seems to confirm just that saying, “you’ll definitely see familiar faces.”
Andor doesn’t yet have an official realease date for its Disney+ premiere, but with filming done we should expect it to debut in the first half of 2022, after The Book of Boba Fett airs.
Production has wrapped on the Disney+ Star Wars series, Andor.
The news was confirmed by actor Diego Luna in a recent interview with Deadline. “I had the chance to work with a team that I couldn’t be more proud of and admire more,” Luna said. “It’s a hard-core moment to be out there shooting, and we were really lucky. We’re done with the shooting now and getting it ready for audiences to see it.”
Like many Hollywood productions, the coronavirus impacted production on the Star Wars series. Andorwas initially set to kick off filming in 2019, then it was delayed to June 2020, right in the midst of the pandemic. Filming finally kicked off in November 2020 and wrapped in August 2021.
“I can tell you about this project like no other because I can’t spoil the ending if you’ve seen Stars Wars: Rogue One already”, he teased. “No matter what I say, I can’t ruin the ending.”
The 12-episode series, which Luna also executive produced, is expected to hit Disney+ in 2022.
No reason to panic this isn’t a major shift for the Rogue One spin-off focusing on Cassian Andor. Yes, Toby Haynes will replace Tony Gilroy as director of the series. This doesn’t mean he won’t continue his work as a showrunner. The reason for this is related to the pandemic, as Gilroy won’t be able to travel to the filming location in the U.K. It seems that the Black Mirror director was already on a list to potentially direct some episodes. It is unsure if any other COVID-related influences may reshape the Disney+ series’ production. We do not know if they will adjust the production to accommodate the actors as well. The pandemic has made some of the productions a bit more
Haynes has quite the filmography. He was behind the iconic U.S.S. Callister episode of Black Mirror. So, he has some experience filming a space-centric storyline. We still don’t know much about this show, so who knows how much space travel we can expect. We also do not know how many episodes he will direct. The Mandalorian has built up a core cast of directors that each lent their unique style to the series. There is also the chance he might take over directing duties for the entire show but we have no confirmation on that. Cassian Andor still has no official title but it could offer a unique perspective in the galaxy far far away.
Disney+’s The Mandalorian was a great start to highlight what is possible with this new streaming service. It especially opened up so much potential for exploring the different parts of a galaxy far, far away. While news on the Kenobi show has been rather sparse, Deadline just got its hands on some interesting casting news. It seems that Adria Arjona, who recently appeared in 6 Underground, will join series star Diego Luna in the upcoming Rogue One spin-off. She rounds out the cast alongside Denise Gough, Genevieve O’Reilly, Alan Tudyk, Stellan Skarsgard, and Kyle Soller.
No details are given by Deadline but she will have a lead role in the series which will follow Cassian Andor’s early days as a Rebel agent. So far, the only returning cast members of Rogue One are Diego Luna as the titular character and Alan Tudyk as K-2SO. While the announcement caught many off-guard at the time, it offers a unique perspective into this galaxy. As a spy, he can pretty much end up in many different scenarios. This could give us a closer look at how the Empire operated during this time. Maybe also introduce other factions besides the Rebels that were fighting for their freedom. We only got glimpses so far, so this show may offer a closer look at the daily life under the Empire’s thumb.
Disney is hosting a launch event in London on March 5th where it is expected to update its series slates for Marvel Studios, Star Wars and the rest of it properties and reveal exclusive information. This lines up with the information I shared with you yesterday but is more exciting as it also includes Star Wars and more.
Executives from several branches of Disney are expected to be in attendance to update us on their properties and, potentially, reveal new offerings. It is expected that we might hear updates on Star Wars properties such as The Mandalorian Season 2, Obi-Wan and Cassian Andor; additionally, Marvel Studios will likely update its 2021 release schedule which should include new release dates for Loki, What If…? and Hawkeye and, potentially, dates for Ms. Marvel, She-Hulk and Moon Knight.
