  • Producer Dany Garcia on the Long Journey to ‘Black Adam’

Producer Dany Garcia on the Long Journey to ‘Black Adam’

In 2007, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson was announced as Black Adam for Warner Bros. and DC Comics. At the time, it was expected that he would first pop up in Shazam! but the plan eventually changed with Johnson and his team opting instead to give the anti-hero a solo film first. Now, after what feels like forever, Black Adam is finally set to hit the big screen later this month.

While at the film’s premiere, producer Dany Garcia briefly talked about the film’s long journey to the big screen and Johnson’s commitment to the character. “A decade and a half ago, we knew that character was a character that Dwayne should play… it’s been pushing a boulder every day forward, but believing in the vision.”

Starring alongside Johnson in Black Adam are Aldis Hodge as Hawkman, Quintessa Swindell as Cyclone, Noah Centineo as Atom Smasher and Pierce Brosnan as Doctor Fate. Black Adam is directed by Jaume Collet-Serra from a script by Adam SztykielRory Haines and Sohrab Noshirvani.

Black Adam is set to hit theaters on Oct. 21st. It is currently on track to earn between $70 million and $75 million.

  • Netflix Eyeing Scrapped ‘Batman: Caped Crusader’ Animated Series

Netflix Eyeing Scrapped ‘Batman: Caped Crusader’ Animated Series

Some good DC news after a slew of bad ones all month; there is hope for the scrapped Bruce Timm/Matt Reeves animated Batman series, Batman: Caped Crusader, as multiple streaming services are looking to acquiring the show. Netflix, Hulu, and Apple+ are among the few streamers interested.

This report comes after the massive culling over at WB/Discovery as CEO David Zaslav scrapped, outright canceled, and delayed multiple projects on deck. Batman: Caped Crusader was one of the upcoming projects removed from HBOMax with the hopes of being shopped elsewhere. The studio believes that a buyout of such a project will net them more profits than if they aired it themselves.

  • REPORT: Another Name Surfaces as a Candidate for DC Films’ Kevin Feige

REPORT: Another Name Surfaces as a Candidate for DC Films’ Kevin Feige

The uncertainty and unease surrounding the future of Warner Bros. Discovery’s DC Universe seem to be growing by the day. As has been widely reported over the last week, new WBD CEO David Zaslav has been busy making a series of drastic alterations to the company’s film slate. Batgirl, along with several other potential projects, received an unexpected axing, and most things in development are potentially on the chopping block.

Before the current upheaval, David Zaslav announced that DC is one of their highest priorities. On top of the announcement that DC would be becoming its own studio within the company, Zaslav has confirmed that they’ve put a team together to run said studio and have put together a ten-year plan, mentioning outright it is similar to what Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios have built over at Disney. No word has been made on what exactly this “10-year-plan” entails and it’s unknown if WBD will announce a slate anytime soon.

Still, plenty of discussion has erupted about who could possibly be the “Kevin Feige of DC”. According to a report from Variety, one name being considered is TV producer Greg Berlanti, who “has been loudly whispered as a possibility for the role.” Berlanti is known for his work as one of the key architects of the CW’s DC Arrowverse, which included ncluded shows Arrow, The Flash, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Supergirl, and Superman & Lois. The Arrowverse featured many classic DC heroes and held several crossover events over the years, so Berlanti’s experience seems on par with what DC Films needs.

However, the report noted that no official discussions between WBD and Berlanti’s team have occurred, and apparently trade reporting insiders think he would not be interested in the role. Another potential candidate mentioned by Variety’s report is producer Dan Lin, whose credits include IT, The LEGO Batman Movie, Godzilla vs. Kong, and the failed Justice League movie that George Miller was preparing in 2009. But Lin is reportedly not interested in the role either.

Whoever ends up as the Feige of DC will be faced with high expectations set by Feige himself at Marvel Studios. It will be interesting to learn who WBD eventually selects for the role, though with all the seeming turmoil in the DC TV and Films, it is unclear when this person or 10-year plan will actuall come to fruition.

  • Development Has Been Halted on ‘Static Shock’ and ‘Supergirl’

Development Has Been Halted on ‘Static Shock’ and ‘Supergirl’

Warner Bros. Discovery might be moving full-steam ahead with The Flash, however, a new report from The Hollywood Reporter suggests plenty of other DC projects have been shelved – at least temporarily.

In a new piece breaking down the status of projects in varying stages of development at Warner Bros. Discovery and DC, THR has suggested a slew of projects haven’t necessarily been canceled, but development has slowed. Per the outlet, Supergirl, Green Lantern Corps, Static Shock and a Superman film from writer Ta-Nehisi Coates have all seen their development come to a halt with no directors attached to any of the projects.

Reports that Supergirl hit a speed bump first surfaced last week, with Rolling Stone stating the Flash spinoff was no longer moving forward. This report from THR suggests the project isn’t necessarily canceled, but rather, not a priority at the moment. That could potentially change depending on how The Flash is received upon release next year. As for Static Shock and Coates’ Superman, this marks the first news regarding the projects since they were initially announced, so it’s not entirely surprising that development has stalled on both.

A Static Shock movie was first teased in August 2020 as part of DC’s FanDome event, with news coming a few months later that Michael B. Jordan would produce the project for Warner Bros. along with Reginald Hudlin on the film. The project looked to be gaining steam after hiring Randy McKinnon in March 2021 to pen the script. Unfortunately, that was the last bit of movement on the project since its initial announcement – the same goes for Coates’ Superman film with producer J.J. Abrams.

With Warner Bros. Discovery viewing Superman as a viable franchise for its DC brand, it remains to be seen whether or not the studio opts to bring back Henry Cavill or opt to introduce a brand-new Man of Steel. Either way, it seems likely Superman will fly again, it just remains to be seen which Superman it’ll be.

  • RUMOR: Jason Sudeikis to Play Ted Kord in ‘Blue Beetle’

RUMOR: Jason Sudeikis to Play Ted Kord in ‘Blue Beetle’

While the future of the DC Extended Universe remains unclear, fans are eagerly awaiting the arrival of Jaime Reyes, aka Blue Beetle, on the big screen. In the comics, Jaime is the third to don the mantle of the Blue Beetle, following Ted Kord who obtained the title from Dan Garret, the original Blue Beetle. Since the movie was announced, fans have been curious as to whether or not Ted Kord will be making an appearance in the film. Thanks to a new report, we might finally have an answer.

Listings from a casting agency indicated that the movie, which is currently in production, is looking for a couple of body doubles for June 1st. Of the two images posted by the Bill Marinella Casting company, one is a blurred/edited photo of Jason Sudeikis. In the image, which you can see below, the casting call is for someone who matches the complexion of Sudeikis. Those applying must be between the ages of 20-55, and be between the height of 6′ and 6’1. The casting call is looking to fill the role for June 1st in Atlanta, GA.

Going off the above casting call, it would suggest the comedian is playing none other than Ted Kord. As it stands, though, there is no confirmation of this. It is, of course, worth noting that Susan Sarandon has been cast as Victoria Kord, who is meant to be the antagonist of the film. The character is said to be an original character developed for the film, but her inclusion would suggest an appearance by Ted is likely.

Blue Beetle is set to hit theaters on Aug. 18th, 2023 and will be directed by Angel Manuel Soto. The film stars Xolo Maridueña in the titular role alongside Susan Sarandon, Harvey Guillén, Raoul Max Trujillo, George Lopez, Elpidia Carrillo, Belissa Escobedo, Adriana Barraza, and Damián Alcázar.

  • Warner Bros Discovery Reveals Why ‘The Wonder Twins’ Was Canceled

Warner Bros Discovery Reveals Why ‘The Wonder Twins’ Was Canceled

Just a few weeks ago, word began to spread via The Hashtag News that the Wonder Twins film had been scrapped just before it was set to begin filming. The project was quickly put together with Black Adam writer Adam Sztykiel set to direct the film with KJ Apa and Isabel May set to star as the titular twins, Zan and Jayna. While the cancelation was never officially confirmed, Warner Bros Discovery has officially announced by the studio, the project was confirmed as dead following the studio’s Upfront panel today.

It has been confirmed that David Zaslav and the new leadership at Warner Bros. Discovery have already begun undoing some of the previous executive’s strategies, like their goal to produce multiple films a year solely for release on HBO Max. The previous plan was for a few of those films to be DC projects to continue to grow their brand and expand the DC Extended Universe.

The company confirmed that The Wonder Twins met an early demise after David Zaslav deemed the $75 million-plus budget way too high for a film that would make a very limited return and just too high of a budget for a streaming film. Zaslav is instead interested in increasing the number of films that studio releases theatrically, reportedly aiming to release 20-25 movies a year, with the theatrical movies actually performing better on HBO Max following a theatrical run.

Sadly, fans are gonna have to wait to see The Wonder Twins make their big-screen debut for now as they don’t seem to fit in the new leadership’s plans for the DCEU.

  • ‘Stargirl’ Season 3 Adds Tim Gabriel as Obsidian

‘Stargirl’ Season 3 Adds Tim Gabriel as Obsidian

Stargirl is a show all about legacy, with the next generation of heroes following the defeat of the original Justice Society of America. Last season Stargirl saw the introduction of Ysa Penarejo as Jennie-Lynn Hayden, better known as Jade and the daughter of Alan Scott. We didn’t get a ton of Jennie, as she struggled to control her abilities and split the town in the pursuit of finding her long-lost twin brother Todd.

Jennie is getting closer to uncovering the truth as Entertainment Weekly is reporting that actor Tim Gabriel has been cast as Todd Rice, Jennie’s brother, and the hero Obsidian. Todd is a member of the LGBTQ+ community and has the ability to manipulate shadows that he’s yet to be able to control. Todd found his way to mysterious folks at the Helix Institute after living on the streets.

At the very end of Stargirl Season 2, we were introduced to Mr. Bones, the man behind the shadows at the Helix Institute, voiced by none other than Keith David, he seemed quite determined to give Blue Valley a visit. We previously theorized that Stargirl season 3 could introduce the supervillain team Helix, led by Mr. Bones.

Gabriel is known for his work in S.W.A.T. and Why Women Kill, as well as the upcoming horror film The Death That Awaits. The upcoming third season of Stargirl has yet to set a return date but Entertainment Weekly states that we can expect the series to return sometime this Summer.

  • Haley Lu Richardson on Losing Out on ‘Batgirl’

Haley Lu Richardson on Losing Out on ‘Batgirl’

Prior to Leslie Grace securing the role as Barbara Gordon, aka Batgirl, multiple young actresses were up for the role. One of them was Haley Lu Richardson, who has starred in titles such as Five Feet Apart and Split. Per The Hollywood Reporter, the young actress was the runner-up behind Grace for the role of Batgirl, but Richardson seems content with how things ultimately went down.

While promoting her latest film, After Yang, Richardson revealed that she received a note from J.K. Simmons after it was revealed she hadn’t gotten the role – something she feels made the whole thing worth it.

“It was exciting regardless, and I did get a nice little personal email from J.K. Simmons out of it, which was really nice. Getting the role would’ve been pretty cool, but I told myself that his email meant more to me than getting the role. So I tried, but I’m not Batgirl at the end of the day. I’m trying to think of what freaking superhero I can play now because aren’t they all done already? My dance skills, my flexibility and my athleticism need to be utilized.”

Although she didn’t get the role of Batgirl, Richardson is more than ready for Hollywood to cast her as a superhero. As she explains, she has dance skills, is flexible and is athletic. With her being a final contender, it seems likely she’ll eventually land her superhero role. After all, as we’ve seen in the past, Hollywood tends to revisit talent when it comes to casting new roles.

Batgirl, starring Leslie Grace, is now in production and is set to be an HBO Max exclusive film. No release date has been announced.
