REVIEW: ‘TITANS’ Season 3 Finally Feels Like a Titans Show

The third season of the now-HBO Max original Titans promises to be the best season yet, easily leaving the first two in the rearview mirror. It does not fail to recognize what it did well in previous seasons and not only amplifies it but uses it more purposefully. The result is a much more cohesive and engaging plotline that evenhandedly threads itself out across the season. This approach is in stark contrast to the patchwork of character introductions and scattered stories that weighed down the previous seasons. Sadly, it still suffers slow and even tedious points, but ultimately is a vast improvement on the series’ ability to tell a story.

Titans Season 3: What You Need To Remember Before Watching

The series is noticeably lighter in tone this time around. Titans has by no means become “light”, but much of the overly dark visuals and broody, dejected tone have been pulled back some. With that, the severity of violence, the amount of blood and gore the series puts forth is significantly lower. While there may be some loss in terms of how gritty the HBO Max series could be, it also feels like there is more space now for the show to deliver a story and explore its characters.

One of the biggest strengths of the season is highlighted in the very first scenes of the first episode. Titans, for the first time, has really established that the Titans are, in fact, a team. While they took time to call themselves a team and a family in the last season, it never felt particularly believable until now. The series is starting to truly take advantage of the groundwork it laid for itself. While the series still does what DC often does well by opening the series up to a wide and versatile survey of DC characters and storylines, this season feels like it is building upwards for the first time rather than outwards.

Titans Season 3 Will Release In August On HBO Max - Geeky Craze

Instead of endlessly adding new elements into the show just to leave others to wilt, Titans finally takes existing elements and uses them to their higher potential while more subtly and tactfully adding in new pieces. There are certain themes and characters that were simply dull in the past but are redesigned into powerful and emotional moments in Season 3 that make the show great at times.

Where Titans truly shined in the past is its portrayal of its leading character, Dick Grayson. Brenton Thwaites’ Grayson, newly minted as Nightwing, continues to steal the spotlight. The series doubles down on the character to the point that the show could, at times, arguably be titled Nightwing without being misleading. This direction can come at the obvious expense of other characters’ development, but it also genuinely aids the organization, consistency, and quality of the season. Where some characters are afforded more limited attention, it is often deliberate and of higher quality than in previous seasons.

Titans Recap & Spoilers: Season 3, Episode 2, "Red Hood" - The News Motion

Rather than portraying itself as a typical superhero action show, the latest season often operates under the guise of a detective thriller. This does, unfortunately, lead to a deficiency of action, particularly of those characters whose powers are dependent on visual effects. To be fair, where the action is highlighted – particularly hand-to-hand combat – it is well executed and enjoyable to watch. There’s just not enough of it.

At the end of the day, Titans retains plenty of its flaws going into its sophomore season. Still, it does stand out, though, by being noticeably and significantly better. It seems like the creators meaningfully took stock in what the series was doing well and what it was not, and tailored this season specifically to address that. Because of that, it can feel like a different show than what it has been, but the result is a much more compelling and enjoyable Titans

  • REPORT: ‘The Batman’ HBO Max Spin-Off’s New Working Title Hints at Arkham Asylum Storyline

REPORT: ‘The Batman’ HBO Max Spin-Off’s New Working Title Hints at Arkham Asylum Storyline

The Batman hasn’t even hit theaters yet, and it’s already expanding with a spin-off series in the works. The series is set to air exclusively on HBO Max and follow the Gotham City police department during the Caped Crusaders’ first year on the job. Little is known about the project, as it’s still looking to cast its leads to explore the corruption within Gotham City and its supposed protectors, the GCPD. Yet, it seems it may take a unique direction going by its new working title.

The Illuminerdi is reporting that the series has the working title “Arkham.” The famous Asylum from DC is sure to get many fan’s attention, and could hint at a large chunk of the story taking place within the walls of the hospital. It seems entirely possible that the series could take place from the perspective of an officer stationed within the Asylum, turning a blind eye to what is really going on. Arkham is notorious for its corruption and houses the absolute worst of the worst that Gotham City can offer.

The series was previously working under “Gotham Central,” which is a nod to the popular comic by Greg Rucka, but this change could indicate the series will go down a different path. The upcoming spin-off has yet to be officially titled and hasn’t made any movement on casting just yet. Following Terrence Winter’s exit, Joe Barton stepped in to fill the shoes with Showrunner on the series, with Matt Reeves and Dylan Clark serving as producers on the project.

  • First ‘Doom Patrol’ Season 3 Trailer Confirms Live-Action Debut of Monsieur Mallah and The Brain

First ‘Doom Patrol’ Season 3 Trailer Confirms Live-Action Debut of Monsieur Mallah and The Brain

The Doom Patrol will be back once again, this time streaming exclusively on HBO Max following DC Universe’s shift into a solely digital library of comics. The series has never been one to shy away from the weird and wild nature of the comics. It embraces absurd characters and concepts. What other show is going to give you a Kaiju fight between a Rat and a cockroach?

A new trailer for the upcoming season has confirmed that Monsieur Mallah and The Brain will indeed be making their live-action debut. The Brain’s containment vehicle was previously seen in season 1 during the episode “Doom Patrol Patrol.” It was plainly visible in Mento’s trophy room. However, the villain was not present during that sequence. The two are a classic duo in the comics. It was, once again, Niles Caulder that turned the Brain into what he is today. Here’s the trailer with the first look at the season and the iconic villains:

Doom Patrol season 3 is set to debut on September 23rd only on HBO Max and will feature the return of Brendan Fraser, April Bowlby, Diane Guerrero, Jovian Wade, Matt Bomer who will see themselves up against the Brotherhood of Dada for what will surely be yet another wild season.

  • J.K. Simmons Eyeing Return As Commissioner Gordon In HBO Max’s “BATGIRL”

In the immortal words of the Daily Bugle, he’s back! The Hollywood Reporter has exclusively revealed that J.K. Simmons is in negotiations to reprise his role as Commissioner James Gordon in HBO Max’s Batgirl film. The tremendously popular actor first appeared in the role for 2017’s Justice League, with more of his scenes being revealed in this year’s Zack Snyder’s Justice League expansion. It had previously been a topic of debate as to whether or not Simmons would ever play Gordon again, with Warner Bros seemingly moving away from the cinematic universe established by Zack Snyder. For example, actor Jeffrey Wright is set to take over the role in Matt ReevesThe Batman. Simmons has mentioned before that he had a desire to return to the role, and already had a contract for more movies, so it’s good to see those promises may actually be fulfilled.

Batgirl will be helmed by directing partners Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, who are best known for reviving the Bad Boys franchise with Bad Boys For Life. The script was written by breakout Christina Hodson, who previously wrote the screenplays for Birds of Prey and the upcoming The Flash project. It was confirmed just days ago that up-and-coming actress Leslie Grace will don the cape and cowl for the film, becoming the first Batgirl on film since Alicia Silverstone held the role in 1997’s Batman & Robin. It’s unknown what the plot of the film will entail, but the consistent flow of casting updates is good news for those of us who can’t wait for new information much longer.

  • What I Heard This Week: HBO Max’s ‘GREEN LANTERN’

What I Heard This Week: HBO Max’s ‘GREEN LANTERN’

Once again wading into unfamiliar territory and territory in which I was burned not too long ago when I shared the rumor that James Gunn was in the earliest stages of developing a Krypto project for Warner Bros…but I’m nothing if not dense, so here’s another hot DC rumor: the Manhunters are set to go up against the Green Lantern Corp in the HBO Max Green Lantern streaming series!

Manhunters | DC Animated Universe | Fandom

Though the streaming series hasn’t settled on a start of production much less a release date, tidbits of info have leaked out over time. We know the series is set to span decades and galaxies and feature several members of the GLC including Alan Scott, Guy Gardner, Jessica Cruz, Simon Baz and newcomer Bree Jarta as well as fan favorites such as Killowag and Sinestro. Scott’s story will take place in the 1940s, Gardner’s in the 1980s and Cruz’s in the early 2000s but the story will obviously need some connective tissue and that might just be where this RUMOR comes into play.

First brought into canon in 1975 by the legendary Jack Kirby, the Manhunters are the first attempt by the Guardians of Oa at a universal peace-keeping corps. Over time their programming led to them believing that the extinction of organic beings was the only true path to peace in the universe and led to the creation of the rage-fueled Red Lantern Corps.

Review: Red Lanterns Vol. 1- Blood and Rage - ComicBookWire

While we cannot confirm the Manhunters as part of the series, their shared history with the Guardians of the Universe, audience familiarity from their role in Green Lantern: The Animated Series and the relative ease of creating them via VFX makes this rumor an easy one to buy into.

    DC MULTIVERSE PROJECTS IN DEVELOPMENT

DC has an incredible number of projects at various stages of development. Some of these are destined for HBO Max and others for theaters. Here’s what we know…

    ZATANNA

Zatanna Zatara follows in the footsteps of her father, the all-powerful magician Giovanni Zatara. Zatanna has learned from the best and is able to cast any spell by simply speaking backward.

    STATIC SHOCK

The film will follow young metahuman Virgil Hawkins who is capable of electromagnetic
    control and generation.

    HOURMAN

The original Hourman, Rex Tyler, was a veteran member of the Justice Society of America and creator of the Miraclo synthesis, a substance that would give Tyler super strength and endurance for one a day. Tyler’s son, Rick, would go on to pick up the mantle of his father and use miraclo to fight alongside the JSA.

    PLASTIC WOMAN

The Film will follow a gender-bent version of the popular comic book character known as Plastic Man.

    BLACKHAWK

During WW2, The Blackhawks were a group of ace pilots lead by a man only known as
Blackhawk, operating out of Blackhawk Island, facing off against the Axis powers during the war while aiding the allies.

    STRANGE ADVENTURES

Announced in late October of 2019 as a series being developed for HBO Max, Greg Berlanti’s Strange Adventures is shaping up as a Twilight Zone-esque anthology that serves as “cautionary tales set in a world where superpowers exist.” These “morality tales” will involve characters from all over the DC Universe, though it’s probably not coincidental that Eisner Award-winning writer Tom King is rolling out a 12-issue Adam Strange comic beginning in the Spring of 2020, bringing the once popular and pulpy character back into the spotlight.

    AMAZONS OF THEMYSCIRA

Announced in December of 2019, the spin-off is being developed by Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins.

    GREEN LANTERN CORPS

Geoff Johns was expected to deliver a script for the film sometime before the end of 2019.

    GREEN LANTERN

Touted as DC’s biggest television series ever made, the Greg Berlanti Green Lantern series will debut on HBO Max at a yet to be determined time.

    SUPERMAN

There is no script or director currently attached to any Man of Steel-related projects making it unlikely we’ll see the Big Blue Boy Scout in a solo film any time soon. However, it was revealed in June of 2020 that the studio had approached Henry Cavill about reprising the role in other DC films.

    JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK

Different from the long gestating film project, this project is being developed for HBO Max by JJ Abrams as part of his deal with WarnerMedia. At this point, it sounds like we may also see Zatana and Constantine projects rolled out as foundations to this project!

    AQUAMAN: KING OF ATLANTIS

An animated series by James Wan, this HBO Max show will take a look at the early years of Arthur as he tries to prove himself to his people.

    DC SUPERHERO HIGH

Elizabeth Banks is developing this half-hour comedy series for HBO Max that promises to follow a group of gifted students who aren’t aware of the destinies that await them.
