REVIEW: ‘Doom Patrol’ Episode 3 — “Nostalgia Patrol”

The third episode of Doom Patrol feels like a fairly self-contained, one-off outing on its surface throughout most of the episode. By the end of “Nostalgia Patrol”, though, it is clear that the episode is an integral part of the season’s moving plot. After the first two episodes’ focus on the 2042 apocalypse and the team trying to grab its footing immediately after the decision to be the Doom Patrol, the restart of the crew’s daily lives almost feels disconnected. The stuck-in-a-movie plot came across like a stand-alone bit in classic Doom Patrol side adventure charm, but it ultimately serves as a clear launching pad for a parallel overarching storyline for the season—Immortus will rise.

Doom Patrol is not known for answering open questions swiftly or without ambiguity. But even when the show goes to off-the-wall territory, it often stays strangely connected, and Season 4 may be no different. The concept of immortality has long tied many characters and elements together, some not as obvious as others. Immortus rising, then, is likely to bring back familiar faces and concepts from past seasons. And with a strong possibility (given the non-stop shakeups and breakups of HBO Max and the DCEU) of Season 4 being the show’s final season, bringing everything together in the end makes the most sense.

The group’s first interaction with the adversary is passive, psychological, emotional, and successful. General Immortus promises to be a force this season that goes to the heart of the Doom Patrol, exploring the shady Immortus Initiative and Niles Caulder’s mildly disturbing actions that led to him collecting and experimenting on our main characters from the beginning. Notably, it seems likely that the fact that the main characters do not appear to age will be addressed, potentially giving viewers more opportunity to explore the cohesive force that bound such a misfit team in the first place.

The core plot of this episode—Rita and others being caught in her old movies—allowed it to be characteristically wacky while also giving it new color and texture that helps the series maintain its “comicbook-y” feel. But among the brevity of the concept was Doom Patrol’s defining emotional distress. Of course, Rita’s profession of love for her family despite her feeling fully rejected was the highlight, but Vic’s bittersweet and uncomfortable reunion with his old friends struck a competing, darker chord. Madam Rouge’s drunken monologue-montage of self-loathing, guilt, and desperation yet again shows this unlikely team member’s merit as a new character to get invested in.

At the end of the day, Doom Patrol has barely explored an actual, traditional superhero team because everything is personal in this series. The characters’ personal lives are constantly in the direct line of fire. Not many comic book or action properties take this kind of route. Instead, they opt for big world-saving heroics and ignore the detailed mechanics of the “humans” in the middle of the story. Doom Patrol, for that reason, is somehow one of the most realistic comic book shows at the same time it is easily “too weird” for many crowds.

  • David Zaslav Pauses Netflix Dealings Over ‘The Sandman’ Season 2 Renewal

David Zaslav Pauses Netflix Dealings Over ‘The Sandman’ Season 2 Renewal

At this point, it seems like a safer question to wonder who Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav hasn’t pissed off in the industry. Not only did he just save money on taxes by scrapping finished films like Batgirl and a Scoob! Holiday Special, but now he seems to have been quite vocal about his displeasure with other streaming deals. Ironic given that he seemingly is moving away from HBO Max to focus on outsourcing what they have to offer.

The reaction seems to come from the contract as part of Netflix’s renewal of The Sandman for a second season. Zaslav is seemingly unhappy with how the deal is structured in how producers are paid across multiple months. They have quite a few projects with Netflix like Sweet Tooth, Manifest, You, and more. Instead of re-evaluating the contracts for future projects, he just outright has paused for any further deals to be made for finished shows moving forward.

It’s strange, as it’s not only a business practice at this point but just didn’t agree with the terms already agreed upon. Zaslav is very hands on in the deal-making, for better and for worse going by recent experiences. Warner Bros. is also no stranger to strange payment models, and it does raise the question why this wasn’t reviewed before moving away from its own streaming service to outsourcing their projects moving forward. Here’shoping this doesn’t end up leading to consequences on any of their co-produced projects.

  • DC Studios’ James Gunn Semi-Confirms Recent Reports on ‘Black Adam’, Henry Cavill, and More

DC Studios’ James Gunn Semi-Confirms Recent Reports on ‘Black Adam’, Henry Cavill, and More

James Gunn and Peter Safran took over as the new heads of a newly formed DC Studios. The question remained on what it might mean for the future of the franchise and generally for those projects that are still currently in some form of development. A recent report by The Hollywood Reporter has openly discussed that perhaps some things aren’t moving forward as first expected.

Report indicated that not only did they pass on Patty Jenkins‘ third Wonder Woman film, but also won’t move forward with a Black Adam sequel; even as Dwayne Johnson desperately crunches the numbers to prove its a success. The biggest shock was also the fact that Henry Cavill may have returned briefly as Superman but is unlikely to do so once again. As Gunn is no stranger to openly discussing rumors and reports, he has taken to his Twitter to semi-confirm some aspects and debunk others.

He also goes on to highlight that they are aware not everyone will be happy with their decisions, but that the transitional period is quite a rough one for any creative taking over an existing slate while mapping out its next ten years.

DC is no stranger to some rather passionate fans about very specific franchise entries, and it likely won’t be an easy transition internally as well as externally. The big qeustion is that this move also puts a dark shadow over the upcoming projects and may add to the fact that The Flash may end up becoming a hard reset for the franchise after all.

  • WB/DC Eyeing Animation Deal With Amazon

WB/DC Eyeing Animation Deal With Amazon

Under the ruthless eye of David Zaslav, Warner Bros. recently went through a massive change internally. Projects were canceled without hesitation, departments were dismantled, and the future seemed bleak for the legacy company. One of the departments that got the shaft was animation. DC, in particular, saw the axing of the Bruce Timm-led animated series Batman: Caped Crusader in the HBO Max slate.

Succeeding reports pointed to Warner Bros. being open to selling the animated series to other services but until now, there hasn’t been any clear plan as to what the show’s fate was. CEO of the TV division at Warner Bros., Channing Dungey, revealed that the company is close to striking a deal with Amazon for all future animated DC content.

Unless this deal magically goes awry in the next few weeks, it seems evident that the home for all animated DC properties moving forward will be on Amazon Prime. Fans are intensely anticipating the new Batman show not only for Timm and Matt Reeves‘ vision but also for what might be the final performance of the legendary Kevin Conroy. Amazon Prime being the new home for DC cartoons is a hopeful sign of what’s to come.

  • DC Studios May Unveil Future Plans in a Few Months

DC Studios May Unveil Future Plans in a Few Months

Peter Safran and James Gunn have only recently taken on the role of DC Studios’ co-CEOs. Warner Bros. Discovery gave them the daunting task of creating a future timeline for how they envision a united DC Comics-based cinematic universe. CEO David Zaslav wants his Marvel Cinematic Universe and he found the perfect guys for the job. Yet, they only joined three weeks ago and it seemed like we’ll have to wait a while before we get any news.

A new post by The Wrap’s Umberto Gonzalez on Twitter has seemingly hinted that we could find out about their plans sooner rather than later. He not only teased that a Superman revival starring Henry Cavill is potentially on ice until this long-term plan is finalized but also they may unveil it in the coming months. It’s unclear though if he is referencing a presentation within Warner Bros. or even plans to share it publicly.

While Marvel Studios knows how to get a crowd riled up with their San Diego Comic-Con showcase, it would be a first for them to fully showcase a roadmap like this. It could be a way to stand out even from the monster that is Marvel Studios, but it would seem unwise to show all your cards if they will have to change either way. Of course, there is a possibility that they simply tease projects that are set to arrive as of 2025 to set the groundwork for what exactly they are planning. For now, we’ll have to wait and see.

  • ‘Gotham’ Knights Adds Lauren Stamile and Damon Dayoub in Recurring Roles

‘Gotham’ Knights Adds Lauren Stamile and Damon Dayoub in Recurring Roles

There was a time when people thought the CW wasn’t moving forward with Gotham Knights, the story of Bruce Wayne’s adoptive son uniting with the children of Gotham’s iconic villains to take on a new threat after the death of his father. The series is seemingly staying far away from most comic influences and paving its own adaptation but will still include elements from the original.

While most CW series are getting axed currently, it does seem like they are quite busy working on the series by Batwoman trio Natalie Abrams, Chad Fiveash, and James Stoteraux. The series has now added two recurring roles with Lauren Stamile and Damon Dayoub joining the DC project. They will play the parents of Brody March, Lincoln, and Rebecca March. The series showrunners had the following to say about the casting:

We are absolutely thrilled to add Lauren and Damon to our already stellar cast. It’s very fitting for their characters in particular to join our world of Gotham. And while fans of the comics may recognize Lincoln’s name, they should expect some twists in the stories to come.

Lincoln is teased as a “self-made industrialist with designs on becoming Gotham’s next mayor” who has a bit of an obsession with gaining more power. Stamile will be taking on the role of a wife that is trapped in an unhappy marriage but tries to keep up the facade. No further details are given on what to expect from their characters and generally where the series’ overarching narrative might be heading but it’s currently set for a midseason release.

  • James Gunn Reacts to Ayer Cut Trending, Teases DC Studios’ Future Approach

James Gunn Reacts to Ayer Cut Trending, Teases DC Studios’ Future Approach

If there ever is one thing that stands out on Twitter (ignoring current events), it was the fact that the director and now co-CEO of the newly formed DC Studios, James Gunn, has always been quite vocal about stories that would end up trending online. He’d often shoot down rumors before they would start getting too much traction.

In his new position, he can no longer be as vocal as possible with every little project he’s involved with, but with a sudden influx of #SaveLegendsofTomorrow and #ReleaseTheAyerCut hashtags on Twitter, he took to his personal account to share some insights into what fans may expect from the franchise.

He goes on to highlight that their core focus remains on exploring the future storylines for the franchise and not just retelling stories that already existed. He highlights “telling the biggest story ever told across multiple films, television shows & animated projects,” which hints at the new DC Universe won’t just rely on live-action adaptations, as even Marvel moved away a bit from having direct influences from their new animated series.

It’s definitely great to see James Gunn react to what is being discussed online, especially with the way the Ayer Cut discussions have spun out of the long-battled Snyder Cut. We likely will have to wait at least until next year or even 2024 to get a clear vision of what the future looks like for DC Studios’ line-up, especially with Gunn‘s work on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 going on until the films May release. So, we’ll have to be patient.

  • Warner Bros. Discovery Head Teases DC Studios’ New co-CEOs “United Creative Approach”

Warner Bros. Discovery Head Teases DC Studios’ New co-CEOs “United Creative Approach”

Warner Bros. Discovery has been quite the powder keg in the industry. Its new CEO David Zaslav has not left a good impression with the axing of Batgirl and pulling various projects from HBO Max for no apparent reason besides saving on taxes. Yet, there’s also some excitement with the newly founded DC Studios that’ll be spearheaded by co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran.

During Warner Bros. Discovery’s earnings call, Zaslav gave a few insights into recent developments. While he did give a shoutout to some productions in the near future for DC, he also highlighted his excitement for the work that Gunn and Safran are going to accomplish and promises a “more unified creative approach” to the DC Cinematic Universe.

I’ve spent a lot of time over the past few months with James and Peter. They have a powerful vision and blueprint that will drive a more unified creative approach that will enable us to realize the full value of one of the world’s most iconic franchises.

    David Zaslav

There still is some uncertainty about whatever Zaslav is trying to accomplish with WBD; many signs hint at them mostly preparing for a resell to another company later down the line. Still, there’s a lot of potentials that with the producer and director spearheading the new division we might still see some tighter world-building in the DC moving forward. For now, we can only hope and we probably won’t see the first results for their ventures by 2025.

  • ‘The Sandman’ Officially Renewed for a Second Season

‘The Sandman’ Officially Renewed for a Second Season

After accidentally leaking in a tweet by DC Comics earlier today, the official announcement has finally dropped that Neil Gaiman‘s adaptation of The Sandman is indeed returning for a second season. The wait has been a long one, as there was some uncertainty due to how exactly Netflix determines what show returns and what doesn’t. The series has pulled in an impressive 69.5M hours viewed in its first week and even went on to double it in its second. With those numbers and the series even getting a surprise episode, it did seem strange that Netflix wasn’t moving forward already with an announcement.

Funny thing is, DC Comics still hasn’t tweeted out the official announcement that leaked earlier. So, we might have to wait for whatever visual was prepared for the original announcement. Netflix hasn’t shared an official tweet either, which is curious given that normally they time these official announcements. Either way, it’s great to see that our time with Morpheus will continue and who knows if we might get another bonus episode the second time around.

Netflix did only recently start sharing information on how these projects perform, but sadly it doesn’t truly give us an idea of what is and isn’t worth a renewal. With their hope to push subscriber growth alongside ensuring their retention, the balance has become tough with many shows getting lost in the amount they release on a weekly basis. Whatever may lead to them renewing projects, here’s hoping it keeps The Sandman going for quite a few years moving forward.

  • Now-Deleted Tweet May Have Confirmed ‘The Sandman’ Season 2 Renewal

Now-Deleted Tweet May Have Confirmed ‘The Sandman’ Season 2 Renewal

Netflix isn’t the safest streaming service nowadays, as we’ve long waited for any news on the renewal of The Sandman. The series saw one of the biggest growths from its initial viewing over time, and it made many wonders how it hasn’t been given a second season yet. As it turns out, a now-deleted tweet by DC Comics revealed that Netflix’s adaptation of The Sandman was renewed for more episodes.

While DC has taken the tweet down, @OneTakeNews luckily has managed to save it and shared it on Twitter. As of now, it’s unclear why it was deleted, but there’s a chance that perhaps it went online too early as tweets are commonly scheduled in advance. Of course, there’s also the chance it was prepared just in case of a renewal and wasn’t meant to go online.

Whatever may be the reason, it definitely feels right that there’s a second season of this Netflix series. The visual may have also been used to hint at the renewal but we’re going to have to anxiously wait a bit longer until the official announcement drops. So, here’s hoping it just leaked a little early and we can expect an announcement in the near future.
