    Tracking DC’s Ever-changing Slate

Due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, there is hardly any business that hasn’t needed ongoing adjustments throughout 2020. Movie studios have been struggling ever since movie theaters had to be shut down, leaving them without the expected money influx, and even with some theaters reopening it has been tough to get audiences to return.

Warner Bros. isn’t unaffected by it all and has, until now, resorted to postponing DCEU release dates, from The Batman to The Flash and Shazam! Fury of The Gods, hoping for a brighter future down the road.

Yesterday came the news that, after several delays, Wonder Woman 1984 is now scheduled to be released both in theaters and through HBO Max on December 25. It was originally announced for release on December 13, 2019, but after an initial (non-coronavirus-related) delay, it was only on March 24 that the rollercoaster really began.

Check out the moves Warner Bros. made in 2020 concerning the DCEU’s release schedule below. The only thing we know for sure is that going into 2021, there are probably still some changes ahead.

  • Sylvester Stallone Joins James Gunn’s ‘The Suicide Squad’

Sylvester Stallone Joins James Gunn’s ‘The Suicide Squad’

2020 has been rather barebones when it came to pop culture content. This year we saw a lot of things get postponed, so there were some uncertainties about what we can expect for the future. Luckily, DC organized its first major online event titled DCFanDome. It offered some first looks at Wonder WomanThe BatmanBlack Adam, and most notably James Gunn‘s The Suicide Squad. We got introduced to the entire cast during the show’s panel. It already was quite an extensive cast, but it looks like one more has joined the fray. Earlier today, the iconic actor behind classics such as Rocky, Rambo, and The Expendables (among countless others) has announced he filmed something for the film. Sylvester Stallone took to Instagram to make a short video and essentially confirm that he will be playing an undisclosed role in the upcoming DC film.

The Suicide Squad has an extensive cast list, which includes Margot RobbieIdris ElbaJohn CenaJoel KinnamanPeter CapaldiViola Davis, and many more. It is currently set to premiere in August 2021. Stallone does not give away who he may end up playing. We know that he will not be an active part of the team, so he could be playing a general that works for Davis‘ Amanda Waller. We do not know how the team comes together, so we might see them face other iconic DC characters. In the original Suicide Squad, we had a short sequence of Will Smith‘s Deadshot being confronted by Batman. So, he could end up playing a hero or vigilante that takes down one of the members. It’ll be interesting to see where and when he appears in the film. Also, this marks the second time he takes on a role in one of James Gunn‘s superhero films. He also appeared as Starhawk in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, who was one of the founding members of the Ravagers. Hopefully, their continued work means he may also appear in the third installment.

  • Joe Manganiello to Reprise Role as Deathstroke in ‘Zack Snyder’s Justice League’

Joe Manganiello to Reprise Role as Deathstroke in ‘Zack Snyder’s Justice League’

Reshoots for Zack Snyder’s Justice League started to take place earlier this week, as reported by THR. So far, the cast members that were included in these reshoots were reportedly Ben Affleck, Ray Fisher, Jared Leto, and Amber Heard as Batman, Cyborg, Joker, and Mera respectively. Now, we have learned that Joe Manganiello is set to reprise his role as Deathstroke for the upcoming DC production, as reported by Collider & their sources state that Manganiello will be returning to the set for additional shooting.

It is important to note that Joe Manganiello was seen last night during a League of Legends event live on Twitch sporting a look similar to that of his Deathstroke appearance in the Justice League (2017) post-credit scene, as seen in the image above. When the project was officially announced back in May, Manganiello had actually gone on Instagram to state that the Synder Cut would include “the original post-credit scene”. What that original post-credit scene was, only time will tell.

Zack Snyder’s Justice League is set to premiere exlucisvely on HBO Max in 2021.

  • ‘SHAZAM 2’ Eyeing Spring 2021 Production Start

‘SHAZAM 2’ Eyeing Spring 2021 Production Start

Last year’s Shazam offered the world a great coming-of-age story. Young Billy Batson had to come to terms with his past and the fact that he can transform into Zachery Levi. Director David F. Sandberg managed to five us a fun-loving tale of a kid turning into a superhero. He somehow also managed to sneak in some gruesome moments with Dr. Sivana and the Seven Deadly Sins. It was certainly a great addition to the DC line-up but this was only the beginning of his story. It was announced that Dwayne Johnson would play his arch-nemesis Black Adam in his own spin-off film. Now, we are anticipating the build-up to the moment these two titans finally clash.

Last year, we got the official release date for the sequel on November 4th, 2022. In an interview with Sandberg back in April, he did state that initially the plans were to start production sometime this year. As everything is currently delayed, it was uncertain when they could start production again. Luckily, Illuminerdi found out that they are currently eyeing Spring 2021 to start production. This still could change depending on how the current situation develops.

Unlike most films, Shazam has only a limited amount of time to film its sequels. The film’s young cast could end up outgrowing their roles if they take too much time, so the delays could have impacted this forcing them to write a time skip between films. WE don’t know much about the sequel and there is no confirmation if Black Adam will appear in the sequel, or if they will build it up until the third. It will be interesting to see how this develops. Perhaps we get an update on the sequel in the upcoming DC FanDome event on August 22nd.

  • ‘DOOM PATROL’ Review: Episode 2.05, “Finger Patrol”

‘DOOM PATROL’ Review: Episode 2.05, “Finger Patrol”

A quaint return to Doom Manor is brought to us in ‘Finger Patrol’ after last weeks provocative festivities, but not before we see many of the main characters split up into multiple diverging story lines that offer more of a build up for what is to come later on in the season. While at first glance there doesn’t seem to be much going on, we’re treated to a some delightful character bonding and development that was well needed, but its not until the episode reaches it end that we’re thrown a curve ball that could quite possibly change the dynamic of the team and even the show in episodes to come.

Doom Patrol: Finger Patrol Promo Gives Cyborg a New Look | CBR

The dynamic robotic duo takes quite the spotlight this episode, with Cliff dubbing them “Steele & Stone.” After being given hope by The Chief that Cliff may one day be able to feel again, Cliff believes he could speed the process up with help from Silas Stone. This leads Cliff to drag Cyborg back to Detroit where Cliff is only met with disappointment. One thing that stuck out here and one of the first plot holes that I’ve noticed, Silas recollects that he denied helping Niles with the development of Cliff’s metal prison as it would make him an accessory to Niles’ crime. Yet in season one Silas says that if Niles would’ve taken his notes, that Cliff could’ve been so much more, which makes one wonder which story is true. Following this, we’re given some great development and bonding between Cliff and Victor, and for once Cliff offers some helpful advice to Vic about his current love endeavor with Roni Evers.

On the other side of things, that is about as delightful as it gets for this episode, for a second it feels as if Larry is going to be able to confront the guilt and regret he feels towards abandoning his family and never being honest to them about who he really is. He decides enough is enough and he and Rita venture out to help Larry’s family empty out his late son’s old home. All seems well and it felt almost cathartic to see the sulking seep out from beneath Larry’s bandages and see him happy for once. That is until his son, Paul, reveals that when he said he “followed in his fathers footsteps” he really followed his footsteps and joined the Bureau of Normalcy, and spouts years of pent up rage, anger, and blame towards his father, blaming him for his family’s troubles.

Finally we’re given a rather interesting side plot focused on Jane’s alter ego, Baby Doll, and Dorothy. Chief believes that the two would be the best of friends and for bit they are. since the season started there has been an interesting dynamic going on within Jane, a power struggle between her and those who reside within her head. she’d been dealing with the stress of being the main personality while the others demanded more time above ground. This delivers a more irritable and more sensitive Jane that has become much more of a hot head this season. Finally when we reach the boiler room were shown a distressing chain of events that leads to one of Jane’s personalities killing Dorothy’s best friend, Manny the Wendigo. As an act of childish rage Dorothy makes the decision to make a wish, the full might of Candlemaker is put on display, being stuck as voice within Dorothy’s head for a better part of the season it was unclear what exactly his abilities were, but once he infiltrates the underground and slaughters those who get into his way were setup for an interesting end to the season.

It is wild to think that we’re already halfway through the season, and with only four episodes left in season 2 and so much set up for the future just in this episode it’ll be interesting to see how they wrap things up in the end. Doom Patrol has become such outside of the box, breaking down limitations, type of comic book show. It doesn’t follow any sort of formula and just focuses on the characters and lets them push the story forward, and with this episode even though its basically one big recipe for the main course that is the rest of the season, it continues to deliver on every aspect.

  • ‘STARGIRL’ Renewed, Moved to CW for Season 2

‘STARGIRL’ Renewed, Moved to CW for Season 2

Before it has even finished its first full season run, Stargirl has received a season 2 renewal and will be moving exclusively to The CW for its sophomore season. For the past eight episodes, the show has premiered a day early on the DC Universe streaming service and debuted on the CW the next. The solid and steady ratings the show has amassed was likely a leading factor in it being moved to The CW. Season one of Stargirl will reportedly make its way to HBO Max once this season finishes its current run.

This news leads to a couple of concerns: will it suffer the CW curse and what’s happening over at DC Universe?

Most CW shows receive 20+ episode seasons, leading to story-lines being dragged out and to filler episodes that don’t benefit the dynamic of the story in any way, shape, or form. The best-case scenario to avoid a situation like this would be to give the show at a mid-season premiere and offer an episode count similar to its first season. This would make it easier for the show to keep its budget compared to what it was when it was originally produced for DC Universe: quality over quantity.

Since the announcement that Doom Patrol season 2 would run on both HBO Max and DC universe, many have wondered what fate the  DC Universe service would suffer. Since then, an exodus of its original content has become a monthly occurrence. Along with Doom Patrol, it seems as if Harley Quinn’s first two seasons will make their way to HBO Max as well. Where does this put Titans and Young Justice? The best course of action would be to leave DC Universe as a virtual comic library and move these shows to HBO Max, giving their DC library a much bigger boost and more original content for the service to offer while also giving these shows a much larger audience to appeal too.
