Scarcity and Surprise — Ryan Reynolds Isn’t Rushing for ‘Deadpool 4’

After the $1.3 billion carnage of Deadpool & Wolverine, fans have been checking their watches for a sequel announcement. But according to Ryan Reynolds, Wade Wilson is going into a bit of a self-imposed hibernation. In a new interview with Collider today, the actor revealed that while he is constantly writing, he is in “no huge rush” to center a movie around himself again.

Reynolds confirmed a major shift in how the Merc with a Mouth will function in the MCU moving forward and cast doubt on a recent insider report that indicated another Deadpool film was set to kick off Phase 7.

    Scarcity is Key

Deadpool works best on both scarcity and surprise,” Reynolds told Collider. “Jumping right back into it full-on right now is probably something I’m not going to do.”

This follows his comments earlier this month on Sunday Today, where he stated, “I don’t think I am ever going to center him again. He is a supporting character. He is a guy who is great in a group.”

Despite the lack of a release date, Reynolds admitted he has “a few things written that I love.” These are rumored to be team-up scripts that position Deadpool as a chaotic foil to other major MCU players rather than the solo lead.

I’ve talked to Marvel off and on, always. We have a really great relationship, you know? It’s always a conversation. I’m always just looking to be additive and help on anything, even if it’s not a movie I’m in. And I’m always writing. I mean, it’s how I kind of get it out of my system. I love writing. That character and that world is one in which anything is possible, and that in and of itself allows for so much freedom and storytelling.

    -Ryan Reynolds

With Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars on the horizon, the working theory is that Deadpool will be the legacy anchor who bridges the gap between the Fox universe and the new MCU X-Men roster…but there’s no doubt Marvel will have Deadpool back on the big screen before long.

Trade Reports Dispute Deadpool’s ‘Doomsday’ Appearance

Ryan Reynolds‘ Wade Wilson is known for stirring the pot…and now he’s started a rumble amongst the Hollywood trades. Following a social media post shared by Ryan Reynolds sparked speculation that Deadpool was set to make an appearance in Avengers: Doomsday, THR’s Borys Kit and Aaron Couch seemingly confirmed the role in THR’s Heat Vision newsletter…and then the fun began.

Shortly after Heat Vision was published, Deadline’s Anthony D’Allesandro’s sources disputed THR’s claim, telling the reporter that nobody had “seen Reynolds on set in London, and he isn’t set to appear in the next two Avengers movies.”

Later, The Wrap’s Umberto Gonzalez supported Kit and Crouch’s original report, adding that his sources shared that “we haven’t seen that last of Deadpool, and will see him next in Avengers: Doomsday. But no one is going on the record about it — yet.”

A pair of prominent social media scoopers threw some additional fuel on the fire. My Time To Shine Hello seemed to confirm Reynolds appearance while Cryptic HD Quality indicated that the Merc with a Mouth would lead his own team in Doomsday, perhaps referring to some of The Void’s Resistance fighters from Deadpool & Wolverine.

To nobody’s surprise, Marvel is sitting out the trade war, choosing not to comment and likely waiting to make it official…or not… whenever they roll out the rest of the cast of the film.

  • Ryan Reynolds Ignites ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Speculation with New Instagram Post

Ryan Reynolds Ignites ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Speculation with New Instagram Post

It has been about two and a half months since Marvel Studios used empty chairs to capture the entire world’s attention for roughly five hours while revealing part of the cast of Avengers: Doomsday. While rumors have circulated that 33 more stars will eventually be announced as part of the cast, bringing the count to 60, so far, Marvel Studios has remained quiet on that front. However, one MCU star just ignited speculation that further casting reveals may be imminent.

Deadpool & Wolverine star Ryan Reynolds shared an image of an Avengers “A” overlayed with an anarchy symbol–seen in Cassandra Nova’s lair in the 2024 film–causing fans to believe an announcement that Reynolds has joined Avengers: Doomsday is pending.

While Reynolds has stated in the past that he doesn’t want his character to join the Avengers and X-Men, he does see a path forward for Deadpool in big team-up films. “The character trait I love most about Deadpool is that he’s a fanboy. His enthusiasm and longing to be part of a team is really endearing to me. It’s his overarching wish-fulfillment story. But I don’t think he should ever be an Avenger or an X-Man,” Reynolds explained. “If he becomes either, we’re at the end.

I think Deadpool works so well appearing with the X-Men and Avengers, but he always needs to stay an outsider. His ultimate dream is to be accepted and appreciated. But he can’t be accepted,” said Reynolds. With a clear vision for the character from Reynolds and with MCU boss Kevin Feige “wondering where we can fit [Deadpool and Wolverine] in, and how quickly,” it would be shocking not to see Wade Wilson and Logan make an appearance in Avengers: Doomsday and/or Avengers: Secret Wars.

  • Ryan Reynolds’ New X-Team Reportedly Revealed…and It Includes the MCU’s Rumored Wolverine

Ryan Reynolds’ New X-Team Reportedly Revealed…and It Includes the MCU’s Rumored Wolverine

Earlier this month, THR broke the news that Ryan Reynolds was “quietly plotting his return” as Deadpool. While the star has made it clear that he believes another solo Deadpool film would be superfluous, it turns out he’s been working toward a script for an MCU-based ensemble film that would include “three or four X-Men characters.” Now, a new rumor from one of social media’s busiest news might have revealed exactly what Reynolds has in mind.

According to My Time To Shine Hello, Reynolds has been writing a script for a potential MCU-set X-Force film that would feature his Deadpool teaming up with Josh Brolin‘s Cable, Hugh Jackman‘s Wolverine and an all-new actor as Storm.

If the new information is accurate, it meshes with a late-2024 report from Marvel Studios insider Daniel Richtman, who claimed that Jackman was set to carry on as the MCU’s Wolverine in the studio’s upcoming Avengers films and beyond.

Like nearly every team in the pages of Marvel Comics, the roster of X-Force has been a revolving door since the team first appeared in 1991. Founded by Cable, X-Force often takes a more proactive, militaristic, and covert approach to dealing with threats to mutantkind, often involving missions that the mainstream X-Men would deem too morally ambiguous or violent. While the X-Men typically strive to protect and integrate mutants peacefully, X-Force is essentially the “black ops” arm of the mutant world.

Introducing multiple X-teams is a must for Marvel Studios as it launches Kevin Feige‘s reported 10-year plan for the massive roster of characters obtained when Disney purchased 21st Century Fox in 2019. By reuniting Reynolds and Jackman, who drove Deadpool & Wolverine to become the highest-grossing R-rated film of all-time, and bringing back Brolin, who certainly made a compelling case to continue on as the Askani’son, whole also introducing a new actress as Storm, the studio would certainly be putting its best foot forward its efforts to provide the new Saga with a strong foundation.

  • ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ Claws Up Biggest R-Rated Opening Weekend Ever

‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ Claws Up Biggest R-Rated Opening Weekend Ever

Marvel once again fatigues its way to some record-breaking numbers, but this time in a category many thought they’d never read the names “Marvel Studios” and “Disney.” With the release of Deadpool & Wolverine, they have now managed to win the biggest R-rated opening box office weekend ever with a whopping $205M. That makes it the eighth-highest opening ahead of Black Panther and trailing slightly behind The Avengers. It’s crazy to think that in all this time only nine films ever passed that $200M mark and this is the first time an R-Rated film managed such a feat.

It has also skipped over Deadpool and Deadpool 2′s opening weekends, which each made respective $132M and $125M which were massive for the time for R-rated before Joker went on to make a good streak. It also marks the biggest opening of the year overtaking Inside Out 2, which had a debut of $155M and now is the highest-earning animated film ever. It’s a good sign after many films seemingly struggled last and this year, but may be a bigger sign that July is the new May for the summer box office.

Internationally, the film made $438M so it’s definitely going to be a smash at the box office and help make up some of the issues that plagued the studio last year with The Marvels and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. Though ignoring online discourse, it was a rough year overall for major releases and the strikes just hit the box office harder than one would expect. It does open the question if this is a similar surprise hit with Spider-Man: No Way Home given the leads and audiences simply care more for nostalgia than original continuations.

Deadpool & Wolverine had initial expectations at $160M so that jump is quite massive after it made $96M on its opening day alone. What is also going to boost its numbers is the impressive A CinemaScore ranking which is quite unusual given how general audiences tend to react towards R-rated films. So, the Deadpool film being a crowd-pleaser with its humor goes against many online reactions stating people will be mixed on it. So, we’re continuing to see a stronger dissonance between X and TikTok reactions against the global reactions. The big question is: how far can it go and is a billion on its radar moving into its second weekend?

  • ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ Becomes Most Watched Trailer of All Time within 24 Hours

‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ Becomes Most Watched Trailer of All Time within 24 Hours

That did the trick. Deadpool & Wolverine has managed to break a major record this weekend. The first trailer for Ryan Reynolds‘ grand return to the franchise has been met with a warm welcome after its Super Bowl release. Within 24 hours, the trailer has become the most-watched trailer with 365M views. That is even higher than Sony and Marvel Studios’ major release during the pandemic in the form of Spider-Man: No Way Home (355M).

The film is directed by Shawn Levy, who worked on various projects with Reynolds in the past. This film also marks the major return of Hugh Jackman in the iconic role of Wolverine. In a way, the trilogy has been building up to an eventual meeting and the set-up of the TVA arriving makes sense given the way he played around with time travel being a major part of the second entry.

These views also further highlight the complicated discourse of “superhero fatigue” that has been making the rounds. We might be going through the same experience that we had with Phase 2 where the topic had gained traction before a return in the third phase. It’ll be interesting to see what this might mean for the box office and if this is a sign that it’ll manage similar numbers to what No Way Home managed.

  • Brad Pitt Nearly Started as Cable in ‘Deadpool 2’

Brad Pitt Nearly Started as Cable in ‘Deadpool 2’

Josh Brolin played a mean Cable in 2018’s Deadpool 2. The veteran actor brought the right amount of snarl and grit to the old time traveler but before Brolin landed the role, rumors suggested Brad Pitt was destined to portray the Askani’son. According to comic book creator Rob Liefeld, those rumors weren’t just the usual Internet fodder.

“I know for 100% fact that was true,” Liefeld said of the Pitt rumors in an interview with Comic Book. “They did previews, and David Leitch had a very special relationship doing stunt work with [Pitt]. What people don’t know is that was very early early on. So when they knew they weren’t going in that direction, they went down several others.”

As Liefeld indicated, Leitch worked as Pitt’s stunt double on five projects including Fight Club, Troy and Mr. and Mrs. Smith. In 2014, Leitch broke into the big leagues as a director when he co-directed John Wick with Chad Stahelski. When Deadpool director Tim Miller departed Deadpool 2 amidst creative differences, Fox quickly pivoted to Leitch to he the sequel.

Aside from Pitt, Kyle Chandler was also associated with the role. However, as Liefeld told Comic Book, the role quickly went to Brolin…once his wife convinced him to read for the role. Rumors have Cable’s time traveling device playing a major role in Deadpool 3 so it wouldn’t be shocking to see Brolin return as the Son of Tomorrow, especially given the number of actors set to cameo in their prior Fox roles.

Marvel Studios Untitled Deadpool and Wolverine film is set to hit theaters on July 26th, 2024.

  • Emma Corrin Confirms Villainous Role in ‘Deadpool 3’

Emma Corrin Confirms Villainous Role in ‘Deadpool 3’

In February, the internet learned that Deadpool 3 has added The Crown actress Emma Corrin in an unknown role. There were quite a few rumors making the rounds on who exactly she might be playing with some ranging from quite abstract comic characters to various Marvel Cinematic Universe connections one can imagine.

In an interview with Variety, Corrin doesn’t reveal who they are playing but confirms that it will be a villainous role. Though, they highlight that when they met with director Shawn Levy, famous for his work on Stranger Things, they had zero idea what the role was because Marvel was keeping quite a tight grip on actual details, as per usual.

I feel really excited to play a villain. I haven’t done that, and it’s an itch I want to scratch. I’d heard about the project but, classic Marvel, they couldn’t tell me anything about it. Absolutely nothing. Zilch. So I met [Shawn] being like, ‘I don’t know what this is about.’

    Emma Corrin

They go on to highlight that they’re not much of “a Marvel person” but has had some history with Spider-Man and Black Panther. Though, they do go on that she believes “it’s amazing” and seemed to love the self-awareness of Deadpool.

Hands up, I’m not a Marvel person. I’ve watched ‘Spider-Man’ and ‘Black Panther.’ I was like, ‘Look, you’re gonna have to debrief me into this.’ It’s such an intricate world. There’s so much to it, it’s an absolute mindfuck. All the language and the Easter eggs, and this person is related to that person who did this, and this person came back and this person’s dead… it’s amazing. I really understand why it means as much as it does to so many people. It’s a phenomenon, and I feel really lucky to be part of it. Especially ‘Deadpool,’ because I love the fact that it’s self-aware, and critical of its own inner-workings.

    Emma Corrin

We’ll have to wait quite a bit longer until we find out who they are playing, especially with the SAG and WGA strikes going on due to studios not paying their talent the money they deserve for the work they invest. It’s unclear when or how much they finished from production. As the director’s guild isn’t striking, Levy might be currently busy working on post-production and waiting to finish filming they didn’t get around to.

  • New ‘Deadpool 3’ Set Photo Offers First Look at Hugh Jackman in Comic-Accurate Wolverine Suit

New ‘Deadpool 3’ Set Photo Offers First Look at Hugh Jackman in Comic-Accurate Wolverine Suit

Just recently, we had a first look at Ryan Reynolds‘ new Deadpool costume in the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe threequel. As the entry was moving away from 20th Century Fox, many were hoping this meant we’d also get Hugh Jackman‘s Wolverine to finally wear a comic-accurate costume of his own. His return gave many the hope that we’ll finally give the actor the chance to have one last go after Logan to be a bit closer to the comics.

Luckily, the latest set photos from the production have finally confirmed that he will, in fact, wear the iconic yellow outfit from the comics. It seems strongly inspired by the Astonishing X-Men run and it’s crazy to see the actor actually wear a costume that isn’t just black leather or a brown jacket. Even X-Men: Days of Future Past only gave him some yellow highlights and remained true to the 2000s X-Men franchise.

    https://twitter.com/GeekVibesNation/status/1678400255652507651

It is bonkers to think that he’s been playing the character for over 20 years and never had the chance to actually don the iconic suit. Deadpool 3 is the perfect time for his character to return and get that iconic look, as it blends the two worlds together in a potential multiversal storyline. Plus, it would’ve been a shame for these two giants not to meet with the entire Deadpool franchise building up to their eventual meeting.
