  • MORTAL KOMBAT 11: First Look at Rambo Gameplay

MORTAL KOMBAT 11: First Look at Rambo Gameplay

October has been real kind to us Mortal Kombat fans. First, we get the Kombat Pack 2 announcement confirming three new characters, and last night, we got a good look at Rain’s gameplay in the Kombat Kast stream. Today, Netherrealm Studios is blessing us with the first look at John Rambo’s gameplay to coincide with the 38th anniversary of the first Rambo film. Check out the footage below!

So the devs weren’t lying when they said that the character wasn’t going to be a straight-up zoning character. Right from the get-go, we see that Rambo’s main weapon of choice is his knife. With all his traps, he’s got an array of set-ups which I think will convince skeptics to give him a chance. He does seem a little bit on the slow side akin to the Terminator but I’m sure his frame data will say otherwise. As someone who plays Nightwolf, I’m seeing a lot of the character in Rambo, with the bow, knife, and the crouching roll he does.  His prone position crawl looks insane and I wonder how it’ll fare in an actual game. Overall, I think NRS did a fantastic job making the character’s moveset super fun.

  • MORTAL KOMBAT 11: First Look at Rain Gameplay

MORTAL KOMBAT 11: First Look at Rain Gameplay

Last week, Netherrealm Studios gave Mortal Kombat 11 fans a taste of what’s to come in the anticipated Kombat Pack 2. Fans were treated to the return of fan favorites Rain and Mileena and newcomer Rambo. Today, the studio has released the first gameplay footage centered on the Edenian prince, Rain.

Right from the get-go, we see just how revamped the character is since he was last playable in Mortal Kombat 9. His classic moves like Super Sick and Weatherball look super modernized which I love. One move that is particularly surprising is his liquid phasing form, which I hope has an amount of risk to execute because I can already see those people spamming the hell out if it just to get out of an attack. Those skins showcased in the trailer look absolutely sick and I’m particularly fond of the horned royal garb he has fighting Sindel. There are tiny details in his moveset that really enrich the character such as the raindrops and thunder during his Fatal Blow. Overall, a fantastic modernized take on a classic character.

New ‘MORTAL KOMBAT’ Trailer for Kombat Pack Reveals Rain, Mileena, and Rambo

    Finally!

After months of waiting to hear or see what’s next for Mortal Kombat 11, a game I’ve been playing every day this year, Netherrealm Studios has released the trailer for their upcoming Kombat Pack. The trailer confirms the datamine leak from last week with revealed the inclusion of characters like Rain, Mileena and John Rambo. Titled Mortal Kombat 11: Ultimate just like the old days, the DLC comes in a little over a month Take a look at the trailer below!

I’m sort of whelmed at the whole thing. While the announcement looks sick, I’m sure if NRS released this before someone was able to datamine the information last week, my reaction would be way different. NRS has been really bad at giving us information regarding the future of this game while the rest of the fighting game community has been constantly inundated with information on games like Tekken and Street Fighter. I’m really curious how Rambo’s moves will look like. A lot of fans seem to be up in arms with another gun-toting character so I’m hoping they do something really interesting with it.

New Datamine Leak Confirms Rain, Mileena, and John Rambo in Upcoming ‘MORTAL KOMBAT 11’ DLC

It’s been a while now since Mortal Kombat 11’s smash-hit DLC Aftermath came out. Since then, fans have been heavily anticipating any new information on the game’s next kharacter offerings. Game director Ed Boon gave us hints all through the past week which fans lost their minds over trying to figure out what Boon’s cryptic teases were. Well, thanks to the MK community’s resident dataminer, thethiny, we now know that not only are fan-favorites Rain and Mileena returning but the next DLC is also set to feature the debut of John Rambo.

As one of those MK fans biting at the chomp for any news on what’s next for this game, holy shit. Rain was last playable in the game’s reboot Mortal Kombat 9 but made an appearance in the subsequent Mortal Kombat X’s story mode. Until now, Rain’s presence in MK11 was limited to some easter egg, skins, and one of Shang Tsung’s special moves. Mileena is arguably the most requested kharacter in this game, with her stans flooding the mentions of any person remotely connected to Netherrealm Studios asking for her return. Those fans will undoubtedly be very happy. John Rambo is by far the biggest surprise here. Everyone’s predictions for the guest kharacters were generally limited to horror icons like Ash from Evil Dead. But with 80s action icons Terminator and Robocop already in the roster, it makes a ton of sense to add Rambo into the mix.

Now if only Netherrealm would give us some actual news on this!

  • ‘Five Nights At Freddy’s: Security Breach’ Revealed as PlayStation Exclusive

‘Five Nights At Freddy’s: Security Breach’ Revealed as PlayStation Exclusive

I only played the initial Five Nights at Freddy’s game but the lore had kept my interest in the franchise. Something about the way this game told its story and hid a lot of easter eggs throughout the franchise was intriguing. A strange part of me wants to try out the virtual-reality game Five Nights at Freddy’s VR: Help Wanted. Sadly, I just do not own a VR headset for the console. I was always curious about returning to the franchise and it looks like I might get that chance. The next entry in the franchise Five Nights at Freddy’s: Security Breach has been revealed as a PlayStation exclusive.

Not going to lie, that trailer is perfectly creepy. It seems we’ll play a kid named Gregory that managed to enter this location after closing hours. The voice-over seems to want to keep you safe but fans of the franchise will know that isn’t the case. Suddenly, a male voice takes over warning you before a classic FNAF jumpscare gets you. Interestingly enough, if you look closely during the kitchen sequence, you can see a strange doll with glowing red eyes staring at you.

I am curious though if these open environments might confirm this being a first-person game. Instead of being confined to a small room, you actually have to find your way out of this place as animatronics try to kill you. I will keep an eye out for future trailers but if they do go this route, this might be a must-buy for me. Also, curious about how many secrets are scattered throughout the game. Really curious about what series creator Scott Cawthon has planned with this game.

  • HORIZON: FORBBIDEN WEST is the Sequel We Cannot Wait For

HORIZON: FORBBIDEN WEST is the Sequel We Cannot Wait For

I came late to the next-gen wave of video games. The last console I owned was a Playstation 2 and it wasn’t until late last year that a buddy of mine lent his Playstation 4 to me. The first game I played right out of the gate was Final Fantasy 15. As a lifelong Final Fantasy fan, the game was mostly ok for me. Didn’t really hit the right spots for me unlike some of its superior predecessors like Final Fantasy 9. I thought to myself if this was next-gen gaming, I guess I’m not missing out that much.

That was until I played Horizon Zero Dawn. Boy, what an experience. Never has a video game mesmerized me since maybe, Chrono Cross on the PS1. From start to finish, I was immersed in this intriguing and beautiful world inhabited by cults, tribes, and cybernetic beasts. The lengths one would go through to single-handedly take down a Behemoth or a Frostclaw was nothing short of breathtaking. The story, for all its sci-fi clunkiness, manages to find its heart with Aloy, an outcast warrior seeking a place to belong to and her quest to find the answers behind this crazy post-apocalyptic, primitive, hi-tech world she lives in.

DLC included, I clocked in about 90+ hours by the time I finished the game and I’m ready to clock in more than that seeing this brand new reveal for the game’s sequel, HORIZON: FORBIDDEN WEST.

Good Lord does this look fantastic. As if the first game wasn’t mesmerizing enough to look at, they went ahead ad made it look crazier. There’s so much to pick up here as a fan. The swimming mechanic which I thought was oddly missing from the first game is finally being introduced here. The cyborg crocs or Snapmaw’s as they call them in the game, are back. Lance Reddick as the mysterious Sylens is back and he’s leading a tribe seemingly hellbent on overriding these beasts with some unseen tech.

But by far the biggest talking points here are the new creatures. The giant-ass tortoise, the pterodactlys, and those fucking mammoths at the very end. I’ve always imagined Aloy as Legolas every time I tried taking down a Thunderjaw in the first game and it looks like this sequel will finally make that fantasy come true as you take down these monstrosities.

The idea of venturing further out into this world is super exciting. One of my favorite aspects of the first game was figuring out just where exactly this whole story was set. I was more than surprised to find out via an in-game collectible that the story takes place around Colorado. So to move further west means to head to California, which I’m sure will be very interesting. Some people have figured out that the Chinese references are in San Francisco’s Chinatown and that the sand dunes are what remains of Nevada.

I never buy any product at launch but man is this game tempting me to get a PS5 as soon as it’s out.

  • ‘SPIDER-MAN: MILES MORALES’ Looks Wild

    ‘SPIDER-MAN: MILES MORALES’ Looks Wild

For as far as I can remember, I’ve always enjoyed Spider-Man games, even the ones from the terrible web-swinging mechanic era. I distinctly recall 10-year old me typing ‘EEL NATS’ in the cheat section to unlock all those costumes in PS1’s Spider-Man 2: Enter Electro. Seeing obscure costumes like Ricochet and Amazing Bag Man for the first time was one of my first educational deep-dives in learning all about Spider-Man. The first movie tie-in Spidey game was fun for me simply because of the movie it was based on and that game was terrible.

So it comes as no surprise that once the web-swinging issue was solved and the sandbox open-world notion was introduced with Spider-Man 2, these Spidey games started hitting differently. The freedom to swing all over Manhattan, explore the sights, and fight crime along the way, was era-defining for a superhero fan in me. The cel-shaded Ultimate Spider-Man adaptation was my jam and those challenges where you had to race against Johnny Storm blew my mind. Even the lesser-known Spidey games like Shattered Dimensions and Web of Shadows, I had a blast playing just for the world-building.

This latest Spider-Man game on the PS4 is something I just played fairly recently. Experiencing the web-swinging mechanic I fell in love with in 2004, now dolled up with modern technical ambition was an absolute blast. But what really got me was the attention to world-building. How the characters weave in and out through the story and how their are contemporized for this new generation of Spidey fans (I would often message Charles during my playthrough on how the films could take some cues from this game). Their handling of Miles Morales’ origin, in particular, was pretty amazing.

Today, it was revealed that the next installment in this series would revolve around Miles. Sony unveiled stunning footage where we get to see Miles in action, showcasing some of the abilities he has. Peter Parker’s suit in the first game had pretty much Iron Man-levels of technological advances which gave him access to all kinds of abilities beyond his physical powers. Here, the trailer showcases Miles’ ability to stun enemies and to cloak himself, powers ripped straight from the comics.

It’s unclear who Miles is facing off against in this trailer but true to its predecessor’s form, they look like the same tech-enhanced grunts you endlessly fought in the first game. Like with any good Miles Morales origin story, it’d be amazing to see their take on his uncle, Aaron Davis, also known in the comics as the villainous Prowler. We got a pretty great take on the character in Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse and I’m hoping they do the same here. Seeing a bit of that purple-scheme on the grunts makes me think he’ll be at least involved in this.

There was initially a lot of talk about whether this is a full-on game or just a standalone expansion in the vein of Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, given how the first game came out 2 years ago and how it takes way longer than that to produce a complete game. Since this trailer, Sony has spoken out and confirmed the latter, stating the game will be both an “expansion and enhancement to the original.” The representative also went on to tease some of the big enhancements they game will undergo with the new PS5 engine.

Narratively, it makes sense for this game to be the connecting tissue to the official Spider-Man sequel as Peter Parker does have a personal crazy story ahead of him with Harry and the symbiote. But at the end of the day, it’s hard to complain about this not being a full game because the fact that we get to play a fully realized Miles makes this more than worthwhile. Even if it’s a game half as long as the first one, as long as you’re playing Miles, it’s all good.

  • What I Heard This Week: The ‘UNCHARTED’ Domino Effect

What I Heard This Week: The ‘UNCHARTED’ Domino Effect

Every now and then I come across some information the veracity of which can be confirmed by a second source. What happens FAR more often is that I come across some information that while believable and from trustworthy sources, cannot be confirmed by other sources for various reasons. For instance, on February 19th, I wrote this piece relaying some rumors I’d heard about Marvel Studios updating its Disney Plus slate; the next day, the news broke that a special Disney Plus event would be held in London on March 5th where it is expected that Marvel Studios and Star Wars slates will be updated. I also shared information about Peyton Reed directing episodes of season 2 of The Mandalorian months before he made it official.
This little nugget was one I found to be very interesting on a lot of levels despite it not being directly related to any of the properties I find interesting.
Sony Sets Uncharted Movie Release Date Along With Other Films – /Film
It has been passed on to me that Sony is currently planning to begin filming on their upcoming video game adaptation, Uncharted, in mid-to-late July. The film was just about to kick off production in Germany when the COVID-19 pandemic shut it down but the studio believes that the current community health situation in Germany provides a safe environment.
This is of interest to me for a few reasons. In late April, during one of the mass shufflings of movie release dates we have seen in response to the pandemic, Sony moved Uncharted from an October 8th, 2021 release date to July 16th, 2021. MCU fans might remember that this was the original date for Sony and Marvel Studios third Spider-Man collaboration, a film that was moved to November 5, 2021, a date originally held for Doctor Strange: In the Multiverse of Madness.
The common denominator here is, of course, Tom Holland. Holland is the lead of both Uncharted and Spider-Man and Sony’s move, in conjunction with Marvel Studios willingness to move the Strange sequel, meant that Holland was always going to film Uncharted before kicking off Spider-Man. However, what is truly interesting to me is that I have also recently heard rumblings about the production of Spider-Man 3 aiming for a late-September.early-October start date. During any other time and taken on their own, these dates would make perfect sense. It’s very common for Marvel Studios to roll cameras on a film 10-14 months before it hits studios, but you can probably see how these two start dates don’t make much sense when taken together.
Thankfully, I heard just a little more on the subject in regards to Sony’s plans. We all know that, for the foreseeable future, movie sets are going to be very different than what they have been in the past. Fewer people, fewer large scale sets and shorter working days. In practice, that would seem like it would mean shoots would take more time, not less, making it all but impossible for Holland to finish Uncharted in time to get to work on Spider-Man 3; however, it seems that Sony is really keen on getting as many productions done as they can while the water is warm, so to speak (most industry folks are expecting more shut downs in the Fall once flu season begins and the second wave of COVID-19 is expected to hit). To that end, the studio is working towards some unconventional means to get Holland’s work on Uncharted done and dusted in time for him to be back stateside to do Spidey. That might mean shooting out of order to complete Holland’s scenes and it might mean starting work on Spidey without the lead on set, but from what I’m hearing, studios are stepping WAY outside of their comfort zones to get things done during these crazy days.
If you follow me on Twitter, you know I’ve been banging the “don’t worry about start dates” drum for a while because right now there’s just no way to be sure when things will start, pause, restart and finish; however, in this instance there were so many connected pieces along with the planning around unconventional work by the studios that I thought it was worth the chance to put it out there knowing a COVID spike could happen in 3 weeks putting everything on hold again and making me look dumber than normal. The best we can do now is wait and see, but it’s good to see studios addressing these issues and trying to make hay while the sun is shining.
