Ever since director Dean Fleischer Camp joined the production of a live-action Lilo & Stitch film, it seems like production has kickstarted into overdrive. Not too long after the first castings came out, production already started and now we seemingly have our first set video find its way online. While we don’t get a look at the cast, there’s one familiar face involved.
In the video shared by @reelnewshawaii, they are seemingly filming a beach sequence. A group is driving out with a camera, but what stands out is what one of them has in their hand. If you look closely, it seems like they are working with the stand-in for Stitch going by the body shape and ears.
While we don’t get a close-up shot of the stand-in, it does seem pretty close to what we got from the character in the original animated feature. So, it seems like they will be sticking to that original design quite closely rather than making any major changes to what he looked like.
Of course, the stand-in doesn’t necessitate that they’ll truly stick to the design, but they might go down the route of Pinocchio, which had the exact same design but mostly adapted his design from the original animated film but with more added texture. Either way, it’ll be interesting to see what he’ll look like once they start promoting the film.
It looks like some changes have happened behind the scenes. In a new casting announcement that the live-action Lilo and Stitch film is seeing to bring back Chris Sanders as the voice of Stitch. Just recently, we learned that Kahiau Machado has been cast in the role of David Kawena but it seems that they decided to recast the character moving forward.
In a new piece by The Hollywood Reporter, they reveal that Kaipot Dudoit has taken over the role of David due to Disney’s vetting process uncovering some racial slurs shared by Machado on his Social Media. There has not been an official statement by Disney on the matter so far.
It’s definitely been one of their fastest recasts given that the announcement of Machado joining the production was just last week. So, Kaipot may have been among one of the top choices, to begin with, and they may have reacted quite fast to get them on board as filming was slowly getting started in Hawaii.
It’s been quite a rough time for Disney, especially with the recent allegations surrounding Jonathan Majors. While David is a supporting role, he’s still the main love interest for a major character and they may be trying to be as safe as possible; even if it’s unclear what exactly they have planned with Kang the Conqueror.
It seems that while the upcoming live-action remake of Lilo and Stitch will see the return of a voice actor from the original animated film. In a new report by a Hollywood reporter, it seems Chris Sanders is in final talks to return as the voice of the loveable alien Stitch, who ends up crashlanding on Hawaii under the care of young Lilo.
It also seems like the voice actress Tia Carrere, who played Nani in the animated film, will also return to play the character of Mrs. Kekoa. There’s also the reveal of Amy Hill taking on a role of an original character Tūtū, but details are still scarce as of now on how these new characters play into this new adaptation. They are joining Dean Fleischer-Camp’s film which already has cast Sydney Elizabeth Agudong, Maia Kealoha, Zach Galifianakis, Billy Magnussen, and Kahiau Machado.
Interestingly enough, these new characters were something we shared back in November of 2022. The detail, however, we did get wrong was the exclusion of Cobra Bubbles in the film as his original role was seemingly given to these newly created characters. Courtney B. Vance has recently been cast as Cobra Bubbles in the live-action adaptation, and they may simply have focused on his role as an agent to avoid just repeating the same material from the original.
With production for the live-action of Lilo and Stitch set to start just around the corner, we are slowly getting more and more casting news for the production. The latest addition is another newcomer in Kahiau Machado as Nani’s love interest from the original animated film, David Kawena.
The casting follows shortly after Sydney Elizabeth Agudong was confirmed to take on the role of Lilo’s sister, who will be played by fellow newcomer Maia Kealoha. They have also cast some familiar faces from the industry with Zach Galifianakis and Billy Magnussen taking on some uncertain roles, but are both expected to play aliens in the film.
With The Little Mermaid on the horizon, there’s also the question of how they’ll adapt the character’s design. They could stick to the original’s work or try to make him a bit more alien and realistic but that doesn’t seem fitting. The latest release includes mermaids but forces its fish and crab characters to have more realistic looks. So, it’s hard to say for now what direction they might take.
Aloha Billy Magnussen! It seems that the cast of the upcoming live-action Lilo & Stitch film is still growing ahead of its production. Magnussen joins Zach Galifianakis and future Lilo, Maia Kealoha in an undisclosed role. Some believe that the actor may be playing one of the aliens with Galifianakis theorized to take on the role of Pleakly. It doesn’t seem like he might be taking on the other iconic role of Jumpa Jookiba or Gantu, but they may also change some of the characters from the original.
We already had hints that perhaps Bubbles won’t be returning and might get replaced with a different character. So, nothing is truly set in stone at this point on how they adapt Lilo & Stitch. It would be fun if they added some Easter eggs from the TV series like Jacques von Hämsterviel or some of Stitch’s numbered siblings. They have more options to play around in expanding the film in creative ways.
Dean Fleischer Camp is set to direct the film and it’ll be interesting to see how they try to bring the loveable yet dangerous Stitch to live-action. They’ll likely not stray too far from his design in the original animated film but just with added textures. Given that he’s an alien, they aren’t restricted to having to make him as realistic as possible. we’ll still have to wait a while until we find out but here’s hoping they can capture that Ohana spirit of the original.
So far, we only knew that Zach Galifianakis has joined the upcoming live-action adaptation of Lilo & Stitch, but it seems they have finally found one of their leads. Newcomer Maia Kealoha has been cast in the role that’ll bring the 2002 version to a new generation with director Dean Fleischer Camp of Marcel the Shell With Shoes On fame. The script is based on work by Chris Kekaniokalani Bright.
The news was first reported by Knight Edge Media and is now confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter. The story seemingly is set to stay quite true to the original adaptation, which saw the story of an alien experiment make his way to Earth and ending up as the adoptive dog of a local Hawaiian girl named Lilo. Their bond is what defines the heart of the story in addition to the beauty of Hawaii adding that additional charm.
It’ll be interesting to see who might give Stitch his iconic voice. Chris Sanders played the character in the original film and given he’ll very likely be a fully CG character, he could potentially return to the role. Though, they might also find an A-list celebrity to bring the character to life. Perhaps Chris Pratt wants to nab one more voice-acting gig after The Super Mario Bros. Movie and the upcoming Garfield movie.
Disney has been quite busy with its live-action adaptations and already has quite a few in some form of development to further capitalize on their nostalgia franchises. Dean Fleischer Camp is busy working on bringing Lilo and Stitch to life once again for Disney+, and it seems he may have already found one of its stars. It seems that Hangover star Zach Galifianakis will be joining the production by the director of Marcel the Shell With Shoes On.
As you might guess, his role is still a mystery and it’s unclear who he might be playing. There’s a good chance he could be playing someone completely original though he would make for a good choice to play Pleakley, the loveable assistant that ends up stuck with Jumba Jookiba, who also has yet to be cast. DisInsider has pointed out that their sources heard he’s playing the character of Pleakley.
Of course, we don’t know how close they are sticking to the original, as we’ve already heard rumblings that some aspects will get changed. It comes with the territory when you’re adapting something as iconic as a Disney animated film and want to give viewers a reason to see the new version of it. Still, we’ll have to wait a bit longer to find out who Galifianakis might end up playing, and the big question: who will be Lilo?
Fans of Black Panther and its sequel should be happy to hear that Marvel Studios has confirmed that there are multiple Disney+ projects in the works based on Wakanda. According to Marvel Studios EP Nate Moore, some of the series in mind would involve existing characters, such as the Okoye-centric project that’s been in development for some time, while others would focus on characters “that would be completely new.”
Daredevil: Born Again is one of three Disney Plus streaming series set to film in the first half of 2023, joining Agatha: Coven of Chaos and Wonder Man. Early word had the Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio-led Daredevil series headed to New York City for production, returning to the familiar locations fans grew accustomed to over 3 seasons of the Netflix series. Production is expected to last nearly all of 2023, beginning in February and wrapping in December.
Indiana Jones is set to make a big comeback with the upcoming fifth film starring Harrison Ford in the iconic role once again. Yet, it seems that Disney is not interested in leaving it with just that single project. According to a new report by Variety, it seems they are also hoping to develop a Disney+ series based on the iconic archaeologist’s globe-trotting adventures. They don’t have a writer or showrunner in place. So, it’s not a definite project at the moment but definitely something they are looking into.
Lastly, a very heartbreaking exclusive about the upcoming live-action Lilo & Stitch movie revealed that the iconic character Cobra Bubbles will be replaced. Of course, news that one of the greatest Disney animated films of all time would be receiving the latest live-action treatment was distressing enough. Still, the fact that Agent Bubbles was not deemed worthy of making the cut is absolutely absurd and a crushing blow to any reasonable-minded person. Perhaps the only post-1990s 2D Disney animated films to actually become a classic, Lilo & Stitch is a journey that spans space, friendship, and family. The film boasts an amazing soundtrack as well, and it is unclear how a live-action film could ever do it justice. Bubbles was a pillar of the original film, serving as the social worker constantly threatening to separate Lilo and her sister, Nani, as Nani does her best as a teenage older sister and pseudo-single-parent after the two’s parents die tragically as per Disney tradition. It is near impossible to see how a remake that forsakes Bubbles could be the Hawaiian Rollercoaster Ride that the beloved Lilo & Stitch embodies. Disney apparently forgot the film’s most famous quote: “Ohana means family. Family means nobody gets left behind or forgotten.”
Disney is all about live-action remakes these days and they’ve eyed pretty much any of their iconic animated films to get the treatment. Among them is the iconic Lilo and Stitch, which is set to be directed by Dean Fleischer-Camp based on a script from Chris Kekianiokalani Bright, which once again explores the story of a young girl named Lilo who ends up with a rather different kind of pet who she names Stitch. While the film will follow the story of the original, we can exclusively share a few details of two original characters being added to the story.
The film is currently busy casting for the roles of Lilo, Nani, and David Kawena from the original animated film. There’s no word if they are actively looking for a voice actor for Stitch, or perhaps they might even see Chris Sanders return to the role. Yet, they are also actively casting two new roles for the film which are a character known as Tutu and Mrs. Kekoa. The former is described as someone who speaks with a local Pidgin accent and is the neighbor of the Pelekai sisters, Lilo and Nani.
The surprising new addition is Mrs. Kekoa, as she seemingly will take on the role of Cobra Bubbles. It’s unclear if that character will still be featured in the film, but it seems that this new character is being cast as the social worker, who pays Nani a few visits to see if their living conditions are right for her to continue looking after Lilo. The addition of an alien pretending to be a dog won’t help matters much. Her inclusion does raise the question if Bubbles will be featured in the film at all, but it is possible they may be taking a different route.
Now, this is quite the surprising reveal but it seems that Dean Fleischer-Camp already has set his next major project after the critical darling that is Marcel The Shell With Shoes On. Deadline has revealed that he’s attached to direct the live-action adaption of the popular animated film Lilo & Stitch. Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich are producing the project with Ryan Halprin set to executive produce. There is no word if the film is currently going to be a theatrical one or even land on Disney+.
Chris Kekianiokalani Bright is currently in negotiations to write the film’s script that retell the story of the human girl Lilo who finds herself an adorable pet, who she names Stitch. The fact that he’s actually a creature that was engineered to destroy everything in its path and is also a fugitive from the space’s equivalent of the police. This will be the first live-action film for Fleischer-Camp who has hit it big with his work on the A24 film.
It’s definitely going to be interesting to see how they tackle this project and his background in animation is likely going to help with bringing Stitch to life. This film marks the latest addition to the family of live-action reboots for Disney classics, which have been quite successful for the studio. As deals are finalizing, we may get some casting announcements sooner than later.
