Oscar Isaac on the Challenges of ‘Moon Knight’

Marvel Studios Moon Knight has captured the attention and imagination of fans, many of whom aren’t entirely familiar with the character’s struggles with dissociative identity disorder. The character, first introduced in 1975, has evolved over the years into one or Marvel Comics most complex heroes and, according to star Oscar Isaac, who will bring the character to life in the upcoming streaming series, it was that taking on the challenge of that complexity that attracted him to the role.

What I love most about this thing is that it’s an exploration of a mind that doesn’t know itself. A human being that doesn’t know his own brain. I found that really moving: what the mind is capable of as far as survival. But the workload was massive: the technical challenge of embodying these different characters, physically, the way I manifest my body… It required a lot of energy.

So far, through a trailer and the Super Bowl TV spot, we’ve seen Isacc inhabit the role of Steven Grant most of the time, with only a quick mention of the character’s original identity, Marc Spector. The series, however, promises to see “Grant” unravel the mystery of his true identity in what Isaac called “the first legitimate Marvel character-study since Iron Man“, and the many twists and turns that it’ll take along the way are sure to keep fans engaged from week to week. While the character has existed for more than 40 years in the comics, it seems as though Marvel Studios has created a rather original take on the character, meaning that even long-time comic readers may find themselves guessing, which seems to be exactly what Isaac hoped for because, as he said himself, he saw it as a chance to do “something really fucking nutty on a major stage” and there is no stage more major than the MCU at the moment.

  • Kevin Feige Promises ‘Moon Knight’ Will Be a “Tonal Shift” for the MCU

Kevin Feige Promises ‘Moon Knight’ Will Be a “Tonal Shift” for the MCU

There have been many questions on what we can expect from the next live-action Marvel show starring Moon Knight. The franchise is seemingly exploring new corners of its universe, but it seemed unclear if the family-friendly content so far might truly reach the likes that Daredevil or Jessica Jones offered. Well, it seems that March upcoming release of Moon Knight may accomplish exactly that, as, alongside the reveal of an amazing looking Mr. Knight, Marvel Studios CEO Kevin Feige promises that the upcoming Disney+ series

It’s been fun to work with Disney+ and see the boundaries shifting on what we’re able to do. There are moments [in the series] when Moon Knight is wailing on another character, and it is loud and brutal, and the knee-jerk reaction is, ‘We’re gonna pull back on this, right?’ No. We’re not pulling back. There’s a tonal shift. This is a different thing. This is Moon Knight

    Kevin Feige

Most of the promotion has teased that Oscar Isaac’s take on the comic character won’t shy away from getting his fits bloody, especially as you can clearly see it on his “moonarangs” and fists. Feige even highlights that “he’s brutal” and we can expect a lot from the project.

Even in the comics, he was more on the darker side of the franchise. So, we might see a completely unhinged Fist of Khonshu which also promises that future entries in the franchise may not shy away from darker storylines and offer visceral action, even if they are on a more family-oriented streaming service like Disney+.

  • Murphy’s Team-Up Volume 16: MCU Team-Ups

    Murphy’s Team-Up Volume 16: MCU Team-Ups

    Nathan Miller

It’s really hard to choose the MCU team-up I’d most like in Phase 4. Normally, I’m most interested in 2nd or 3rd order interactions. The kind of question that usually gets me going is something like, ‘who will be teaming up with each other in 3 years time?’ but right now the source of my thoughts seems to come from projects we saw in 2021. The feeling that seems to follow around potential selections, is excitement for seeing familiar characters reactions to newness in other characters. As one of my favourite characters, I’m supportive of whatever Wanda does in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and am enthused to see reactions to her development as The Scarlet Witch. I’m also ready to see familiar Avengers characters react to Sam Wilson as Captain America, and I’m ready to see Sam lead a team of Avengers. Finally, I’m intrigued to see where Yelena Belova pops up next, so, no matter who she connects with I’ll be absorbed by her interactions with the rest of the MCU. Out of those three, I’m definitely most excited to see what Wanda gets up to, and what the reactions to it are!

Sam Rockwell as Justin Hammer in Iron Man 2... : Through The Roof 'n' Underground

Sam Rockwell’s Justin Hammer with just about anyone. I don’t have any deeper thoughts about it. Put him with Doctor Strange. Spider-Man. Sersi. Abomination. Korg. Miek. Jack Duquesne. Party Thor. Zombie Iron Man. Guy who filmed Shang-Chi on the bus. I don’t care.

    Charles Murphy

Despite being surrounded by gods and monsters, there’s no more down-to-earth hero in the MCU than Sam Wilson. The Falcon and The Winter Soldier allowed us to get a better handle on who Sam is and, simply put, he’s a no-nonsense guy with a straightforward approach to solving problems. He speaks from his heart. He wears his emotions on his sleeve. He knows EXACTLY who he is.

By the time we see Sam in the MCU again, a character who has absolutely no idea who is will have joined the fray. Given who Sam is, teaming him up with Moon Knight might provide some killer character interactions. Sam’s training as a counselor might make him feel as though he can connect with the Fist of Khonshu, but he’s not ready for Moon Knight’s particular set of issues. The Lunar Legionnaire could be an absolutely fascinating fly in Sam’s ointment in Cap 4.

    Dalbin Osorio

For me, I’m really anxious to see a team up between the new Captain America and the new Black Panther. There’s a scene in the comics where Sam Wilson asks that his suit be made by the Wakandans, and he goes on to explain the importance of the African nation and how he should be connected to them in some way. In the MCU, we’ve now seen the beginning of that play out with Sam getting his new costume from the Wakandans. Seeing the new Black Panther’s reaction, and subsequent dialogue, to the new Cap being Black would be a a bad ass moment.

The Friendship of Spider-Man and Human Torch | Marvel

This isn’t exactly a unique choice, but there probably isn’t a live-action Marvel pairing I’ve fantasized about more than Spider-Man and the Human Torch. Anyone who’s read the original run of ‘Marvel Team-Up’ knows this is the foremost duo, with meetings both humorous and touching coming in their respective solo titles as well. Peter and Johnny have an interesting chemistry, as young heroes with something to prove operating on opposite ends of the personality spectrum. Sure, the MCU may not have even cast it’s Torch yet, but this is a team-up that’s finally (finally!) possible for the first time on the big screen and I have a sneaking suspicion it will happen sooner than later.

    Anthony Canton III

Considering the way Spider-Man: No Way Home ended, there’s one team up I feel would give Peter Parker not only the family vibe but a little bit of fun. What if Peter, in trying to stop a criminal, runs into Scott Lang? They never interacted in Captain America: Civil War, so it would be a fresh pairing, and while Scott doesn’t know who Peter is it could be used for some fun dialogue. Spidey and Luis could trade some stories and Ant-Man could help Spider-Man deal with whatever problem he has in the interim. Imagine a story where there’s an arms dealer (Justin Hammer perhaps?) and Spidey needs a little help against some formidable robots. Scott being a family man could give Peter some advice on whatever he’s currently dealing with. You get Scott, Hope, Cassie, and the rest of the crew and you have a fantastic team up movie.

  • Ethan Hawke’s ‘Moon Knight’ Character Revealed

Ethan Hawke’s ‘Moon Knight’ Character Revealed

The first trailer for Marvel Studios’ Moon Knight is here and has finally solved the mystery of just who Ethan Hawke is playing in the streaming series.

    https://twitter.com/MarvelStudios/status/1483272963419824130?t=9wCYDGJpa7vDEKCMKB9MuA&s=19

Closed captioning on the trailer reveals that Hawke is playing scientist Arthur Harrow. Harrow was first introduced in Moon Knight Vol. 2 #2. Harrow does some nasty Nazi-esque experiments on people and creates essentially zombie soldiers. This is a shockingly minor character for Hawke to play, but it will give him free reign to recreate the character however he best serves the story.

Moon Knight debuts on Disney Plus March 30th.

  • ‘Moon Knight’ Confirmed For March 30th Premiere

‘Moon Knight’ Confirmed For March 30th Premiere

Ahead of tonight’s trailer, Marvel Studios has finally confirmed the premiere date of Moon Knight. Mark your calendars on March 30th as that’s when the Fist of Konshu debuts in the MCU.

This confirmation comes days after the folks at That Hashtag Show reported the March 30th date. A March 30th premiere date would align Moon Knight’s finale with the premiere of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness come May. All in all, very exciting news for everyone dying to see this show.

  • Vincent D’Onofrio Describes “The Game” Behind Marvel Studios’ Secrets

Vincent D’Onofrio Describes “The Game” Behind Marvel Studios’ Secrets

Marvel Studios loves their secrets. Whether it’s casting reveals, plot details, or even the episode count of a streaming series, the studio works hard to keep things undercover. For Hawkeye, that meant trying to keep the return of Vincent D’Onofrio as Kingpin a secret, something that was no small task.

In a recent interview with Marvel News Desk, D’Onofrio was asked about working with the famously secretive studio:

In the end I find it hard to believe that, the fans that I come across are intelligent people and I find it hard to believe that they don’t know its a game. And that the game evokes excitement and sometimes provokes excitement, and so I think it’s a fun game to play. And yes, sometimes its weird because in the moment, it gets bizarre, but you know the best thing about that situation from the actor’s point of view, I’ll say, is that I really don’t know anything. I literally don’t, you know, and at this point I would rather not, because its an uncomfortable position to be in.

    Vincent D’Onofrio

D’Onofrio quickly clarified that while it is bizarre and uncomfortable for the actor to have to keep so many secrets while fans wildly speculate, it is still enjoyable:

You know even when I said its an uncomfortable position to be in, just as I said that, the first thing comes to my mind is: “but it’s kind of fun. The game is kind of fun”

    Vincent D’Onofrio

Keeping a return such as Wilson Fisk quiet definitely couldn’t have been easy, especially for D’Onofrio who loves the character so much, but it was sure worth the wait. Now let the games begin again people wonder just where Kingpin will show up next.

  • Vincent D’Onofrio Admits Uncertainty Over Netflix Canon

Vincent D’Onofrio Admits Uncertainty Over Netflix Canon

Back in 2018, we witnessed half of the Marvel Cinematic Universe blipped out of existence. Even today we’re still learning just who survived and who got dusted. Recently in Hawkeye, we learned that Yelena Belova, sister of Natasha Romanoff, was a victim of the blip. One character from that show whose fate during the blip remains a mystery is Wilson Fisk.

Vincent D’Onofrio recently sat down with the folks over at Marvel News Desk, who asked the actor if he’d played this version of Kingpin as if he blipped or hadn’t.

Well, I don’t think I can talk about it because I don’t really know. I can only go by what I think and how I played it but I don’t want to put it out there because then it will become canon. I never had that discussion with anybody so just because of what I had to do in the story, I had to think about it a certain way for me to be able to understand my sort of history up until that point. Hopefully I’ll get another stab at Fisk and it’ll come out another way.

Contrary to what people initially thought, it now seems that D’Onofrio was never really given any information on the canonicity of Fisk’s previous appearance in the Netflix shows. The man certainly reserves the right to portray the character such – with canonicity in mind – but until the story explicitly states it, the debate continues to be in flux. The Fisk we met in Hawkeye was a bit different than the one we were quite used to on Daredevil, so whether it’s a post-blip Fisk or even a soft rebooted one remains to be seen.

  • Vincent D’Onofrio On Bringing His Approach to Kingpin into ‘Hawkeye’

Vincent D’Onofrio On Bringing His Approach to Kingpin into ‘Hawkeye’

In the opening moment of Episode 6 of Hawkeye, it was a bit obvious that Vincent D’Onofrio’s Kingpin wasn’t the same one fans had gotten to know over 3 seasons of Netflix’s Daredevil. Over the course of the episode, the different wardrobe and near superhuman resistance to damage continued to lead fans to believe this wasn’t the same old Wilson Fisk. While it still remains to be seen just how this Fisk fits into the Marvel Cinematic Universe following the events of Hawkeye, it’s likely we’ll see him again, giving D’Onofrio more room to grow in the role.

Recently the folks over at Marvel News Desk had the chance to sit down with the Kingpin himself and took the time to ask just how D’Onofrio went about bringing Fisk into the MCU, after all that time in a very different world at Netflix.

I have to say, that from the get-go with my involvement with Marvel, from Jeph Loeb to where we were at Hawkeye, that I’ve had complete freedom the whole time. I’m not sure why I have? I know that my initial coming into Netflix was contingent on whether I thought it was an interesting part for me, because I knew who Kingpin was.

    Vincent D’Onofrio

D’Onofrio went on to describe how he was able to work closely with Marvel Studios’ Trinh Tran and the writers of Hawkeye to transition the character into the MCU:

You know with Hawkeye it was the same thing. I was immediately, you know Trinh had me on the phone immediately, and I was talking to writers and the producers and we were having-every couple of weeks-we were having discussions about script and about changes and about ideas in the way my approach was. And they were happy enough to pass that on to the directors and how I work, and my approach and how I felt about it, and Kevin was very clear that I was going to be able to bring my stuff into the part.

    Vincent D’Onofrio

D’Onofrio has gone on record several times saying that he’s playing Fisk as if he were the same character as the one from the Netflix series. It’s clear from this interview that he truly cares for the character and any future appearances of Kingpin will benefit from his involvement in determining where he goes next.

  • Marvel Studios Officially Reveals Where ‘Eternals’ Fits on the Sacred Timeline

Marvel Studios Officially Reveals Where ‘Eternals’ Fits on the Sacred Timeline

Marvel Studios Eternals made its streaming debut today on Disney Plus and with the release came an update to the MCU’s chronological viewing order. While the film made it clear that the events set in the “present day” timeline took place after the events of Avengers: Endgame, the update to the app has now placed it more precisely.

It’s now clear that Eternals lands between the events of Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings and the Christmas-centric Hawkeye. Given that the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home were shown to take place just before and during Hawkeye, it’s probably safe to assume that Eternals also took place before the big events of No Way Home as well. Moving forward, it’ll be interesting to see how long it takes before references to Eternals make their way into Phase 4 and 5 projects; given that a Celestial was frozen as he broke free from the Earth’s core and another appeared in the sky, it’s only a matter of time before we start hearing about those events in other projects.

Eternals is now streaming on Disney Plus in both widescreen and IMAX enhanced formats.

  • Spider-Man: No Way Home’ Concept Art Reveals Deleted America Chavez Scene

Spider-Man: No Way Home’ Concept Art Reveals Deleted America Chavez Scene

The Spider-Man: No Way Home runtime was already filled to the brim with cool characters and surprise appearances, but it looks like the movie originally had one more trick up its sleeve. A batch of brand new concept art for the wildly successful Spider-Man film has found its way online, and it reveals that Xochitl Gomez’ America Chavez was initially supposed to make a big appearance. The art, from artist Maciej Kuciara, features Chavez surrounded by Tom Holland’s Peter Parker and his friends, in what looks like a potentially pivotal moment in the story.

When Marvel Studios first announced its Phase 4 schedule, No Way Home was set to release after Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. A series of delays changed things up and it’s then likely that Chavez was removed from the spider-flick in order to make her debut in the upcoming Doctor Strange sequel. It’s unknown what role she was to play in Spider-Man’s story, but America’s ability to travel between dimensions might have been a good reason to get her involved.

Writers Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers recently dropped the news that a different character was originally intended to introduce Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield to the MCU. Perhaps America was supposed to appear and help Peter get the other Spider-Men to help him, instead of Ned gaining magical abilities. Also of note, it appears Flash Thompson and Betty Brant were at one point more involved with the action of the story, as they are featured prominently with the other protagonists in the image.
