  • Frank Grillo Doubts a Crossbones Return to the MCU, Hints at DCU Future

Frank Grillo Doubts a Crossbones Return to the MCU, Hints at DCU Future

There’s always a discussion surrounding how villains are treated in any comic book cinematic franchise. Most commonly, they survive for mostly one film and those that make it out alive aren’t around for too long. So, while the heroes continue to get some development, outside of Loki, most villains end up one-dimensional due to the lack of screen time.

As it turns out, Crossbones actor Frank Grillo feels the same. His character was seemingly set up for a long future with the Marvel Cinematic Universe but faced an untimely end during Captain America: Civil War. One might argue that without his character, the events of that entire film wouldn’t have taken place but it seems Grillo wasn’t a fan of how his character was treated, and seemingly confirms he’ll appear in an upcoming DC project.

They never told a story [about Crossbones]. The mythology of the MCU and just what Marvel has in its pool of characters, it’s so deep. Crossbones was there for a minute, but he was supposed to be there longer, then they went the direction they did. I think Crossbones serves a purpose, but I think the interesting thing is that if you see how many people around the world have responded to Crossbones, and again, he’s on the screen for a very f–king short amount of time, I think there’s more there. I think there was more meat on the bone. I was disappointed, which is why I went over to DC.

    Frank Grillo

It’s certainly a bit strange as he probably had more screen time than any villain in the MCU. Plus, he also returned for two projects even after his character died, as he returned in Avengers: Endgame and even voiced Crossbones again in What If…?. So, he wasn’t a character that was completely sidelined and it would’ve been great to see him return especially with future multiversal storylines. But going by his comments, that ship has sailed.

  • New Rumor Puts a Number on Marvel Studios’ Future Yearly Output

New Rumor Puts a Number on Marvel Studios’ Future Yearly Output

Quality over quantity has been the long-echoed outcry on the internet surrounding Marvel Studios’ direction during the pandemic. With up to four shows on top of three films, it seemed like they were hoping too put out as much as they could. There were hints that Bob Chapek‘s era has forced them to also enforce more Disney+ releases to promote the streaming service while also trying to adjust to something no one ever expected to delay their releases for two years.

Marvel Studios was playing catch-up but there was enough drama to overshadow the troubles most production companies are facing in the current timeline. CG over specific shots in a 2+ hour project were the signs of this development, and many discussions have surfaced online. Ironically, most of this discourse only really arrived during 2022 and has been hyper-fixated on in the current mythos.

That was until Bob Iger once again took over as Disney CEO and many new rumors have surfaced hinting at a new yet old direction. Ironically, the number of rumors of potential projects was one of the causes for concern, these new rumors are potentially doing the same thing. On The Hot Mic, Jeff Sneider has added more fuel to the fire of a more regulated output in the form of an exact project count moving forward.

Marvel’s target output has been reduced. I don’t know if this has been reported, or if this was a line in the trades, or whatever, but I’m told that the target output has been reduced from four shows and four movies a year to two shows and three movies a year. And of course that’s malleable. You could get one on either side of that, or whatever.

    Jeff Sneider

Two series and three films a year seem to be the current direction for 2023. We just recently saw Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania release with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and The Marvels on the horizon. We also had the longest pause between series releases with Secret Invasion finally getting its June release and likely only the second season of Loki on the horizon. While some future schedules might hint at a different schedule, they have reshuffled their schedules quite a bit as of late.

It is kind of funny to think that this schedule matches what we had with the Netflix series and the Marvel movies, as we had two series and three films every year. Yet, we also had additional Marvel series like The Runaways, Agents of SHIELD, as well as Cloak and Dagger. 2018 to 2019 technically had more projects airing with a higher number of episodes compared to the “stuffed” 2022 but perhaps the Marvel studios branding is creating the illusion of such. Either way, the current rumor mill will likely have many happy to see the studio dial it down.

  • ‘Thunderbolt’s Steven Yeun Opens Up on Joining the MCU

‘Thunderbolt’s Steven Yeun Opens Up on Joining the MCU

Steven Yeun is quite busy promoting his upcoming Netflix series, Beef. Starring opposite Ali Wong, the film explores a feud between two strangers that continues to escalate. Yet, that isn’t all the former The Walking Dead actor has on the horizon, as he’s also taking the leap to become part of the superhero genre once again.

After lending his voice to Invincible, the actor has seemingly decided to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He’ll be part of the Thunderbolts but his exact role remains a mystery. There are rumors pointing to him potentially playing the MCU’s Sentry but nothing official has been confirmed.

In an interview with Total Film, the actor got a chance to share what it’s like joining a franchise like the MCU.

I feel good. I feel excited. I feel like a new challenge. I feel blessed to be able to play in a place that reaches so many people. I got to touch that on Walking Dead. It feels exciting to get another chance to connect with people in another way.

    Steven Yeun

It’s great to see his enthusiasm for the project and definitely highlights how he can reach an audience similar to his time on The Walking Dead. In a way, it’s a great showcase of what an actor can do when given the chance to star in something that is more mainstream while still working on smaller projects like the upcoming Beef.

  • James Gunn Addresses ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ Runtime Rumors

James Gunn Addresses ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ Runtime Rumors

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will hit theaters in just under six weeks and is expected to pack an emotional punch as it will serve as a farewell to this particular group of Guardians. The threequel has a lot to accomplish including making good on Vol. 2′s Adam Warlock tease, introducing a new villain in Chukwudi Iwuji’s High Evolutionary, killing off a Guardian or so and fitting whatever surprises Gunn has in store into its runtime. Whether it runs for 1 hour and 56 minutes or 3 hours and 2 minutes, we know that somewhere on social media, it’ll be criticized for being too short. But how long will the film be?

According to Atom Tickets, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is set to be the longest film of the trilogy–and the longest of Gunn’s directorial career–clocking in at 2 hours and 29 minutes. Once that news got out in the wild, it was only a matter of time before Gunn, who continues to be incredibly active on social media even as he continues on in his new role as co-chair of DC Studios, addressed it. And, as it turns out, that runtime is in the ballpark.

It’s around that long, although that’s not yet exact,” said Gunn when asked if the reported runtime was accurate before adding, “and I promise not a second is wasted.” “There’s no fat,” Gunn said of Vol. 3’s plot explaining that “It was necessary to experience the full arc for every major Guardians character, not only for this film, but for the trilogy (or, I should say, trilogy plus).

Gunn went on to explain that “It’s just the length of end credits that are being estimated in this running time.” The end credits of Marvel Studios’ films, of course, famously feature mid and post-credit scenes and depending on how many there are, the length of those credits will vary. While one or two is the norm, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 had five stingers spread out throughout and after the credits rolled. Whatever the case, Gunn’s made it clear that the film will clock in around two and a half hours long making it one of the five longest MCU films and significantly longer than the average MCU film, which clocks in at 2 hours and 12 minutes.

  • Steven Yeun on What Drew Him to His Mysterious ‘Thunderbolts’ Role

Steven Yeun on What Drew Him to His Mysterious ‘Thunderbolts’ Role

Marvel Studios Thunderbolts is set to serve as a sequel of sorts to 2021’s Black Widow while also introducing one of Marvel Comics most powerful characters: Sentry. Though the details of the plot remain a tightly kept secret, director Jake Schreier‘s film will see Julia Louis-Dreyfus‘ Valentina Allegra de Fontaine’s team of kinda-sorta heroes, led by Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova and, maybe, Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes, take on some dangerous mission for the CIA director. Many fans believe that mission will involve having to take on Sentry and many fans believe Sentry will be played by Steven Yeun, who recently joined the project.

While Yeun wasn’t giving any hints on who he would be playing in the Phase 5 film, he did have quite a bit to say about why he was joining the project. While an MCU role is “the dream” for many actors in the business, for Yeun, it was to reunite with his pal Schreier, with whom he worked on the upcoming Netflix series, Beef, that drew him to Thunderbolts.

I don’t know if it was explicitly on my bucket list. It was more the story, getting to work with Jake Schreier again, who directed Beef, and what his intentions were. The intentions of the particular character that they wanted me to play were very clear, and that’s what drew me to the film.

    Steven Yeun

It sounds as though Schreier may have been the one to pitch Yeun’s involvement in Thunderbolts and if he is indeed playing Sentry, that Schreier believes the actor was the right guy for what the MCU’s version of the character will be.

  • Marvel Studios Cracking Down on ‘Ant-Man 3’ Script Leaker

Marvel Studios Cracking Down on ‘Ant-Man 3’ Script Leaker

It’s not been easy for a studio like Marvel Studios which has been well-known for keeping secrets as of late. Almost every other day, it seems like some new leaker finds his way online with information on projects that haven’t even been announced yet or castings that should not see the light of day until the actual release. Yet, there have been some even bigger actions such as the recent leak of the entire Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania script before the film even hit theaters.

It seems Marvel Studios is also no longer sitting idly by, as there have been rumblings of several actions to avoid the number of leaks collected throughout the pandemic. The longer it took for productions to hit theaters, the wilder the theories and rumors got creating a perfect storm dragging down some of the projects due to high expectations and a two-year vacancy. Now, it seems Marvel Studios has enacted a DMCA takedown notice on Reddit.

As the script ended up getting shared in January, it landed on Google which led to a copyright infringement move by Marvel Studios to get it off the internet as fast as possible. Google did remove the content but their next target was Reddit. The post got taken down before even Reddit could react, but they are still actively looking to identify the culprit.

The only issue is that it was enacted through the /u/MSSMods account, which was a shared moderator account for Marvel Studios Spoilers; a quite famous hot spot for the latest leaks and news. They are still actively looking for whoever and it seems that r/MarvelStudiosSpoilers has been shut down due to legal actions. It’s unclear what the future might have in store but one thing is for sure: Marvel Studios is not going to just let anyone get away with it moving forward.

  • Marvel Studios Eyeing Sam Raimi to Return for ‘Doctor Strange 3’

Marvel Studios Eyeing Sam Raimi to Return for ‘Doctor Strange 3’

Following Scott Derrickson‘s departure from Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Sam Raimi stepped in to take the reigns and put together one of Marvel Studios’ best Phase 4 films. Raimi infused the film with his signature style, providing audiences with a giant walking eyeball, a zombie Doctor Strange and a reminder that Marvel Studios films can be both “comic booky” and fun. Rumors have begun to swirl that Stephen Strange has a major role to play in the Multiverse Saga and that the studio is keen on pushing out another Doctor Strange solo film sooner rather than later and now that they might just have Raimi in their sights to helm it.

During a segment of the Hot Mic Podcast, co-host Jeff Sneider indicated that it’s his belief that Raimi will return to direct the third installment in the Doctor Strange franchise. Though Sneider was clear that he was not confirming Raimi’s return, he hinted that it was pretty clear that was the direction things were headed.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness grossed just short of $1B at the box office ($955.8M), making it the fourth highest-grossing film of 2022. The film’s post-credit scene, which introduced Charlize Theron as Clea, hinted at Strange playing a major role in the larger narrative of the Multiverse Saga and recent rumors have suggested that the character will essentially fill the shoes Tony Stark wore towards the end of the Infinity Saga.

Despite the rumors, Marvel Studios has not officially announced the Doctor Strange threequel; in fact, Disney Chairman Bob Iger recently indicated that the studio may be less inclined to revisit characters for a “third and a fourth” film in the future in favor of bringing new characters to the screen. Additionally, news of a slow down and increased measures of quality control within Marvel Studios don’t seem to match up with the rumored “fast-tracking” of Doctor Strange 3. Disney will be in attendance at April’s CinemaCon, providing them with an opportunity to publicly address any additions, subtractions or delays to Marvel Studios’ slate, should they chose to do so. Otherwise, fans may have to wait until SDCC ’23, or later, to see what Iger’s return to the company means for Marvel Studios theatrical plan.

  • New Details Emerge on ‘What If…?’ Season 2’s New MCU Character

New Details Emerge on ‘What If…?’ Season 2’s New MCU Character

The first season of Marvel Studios animated series What If…? was a hit with critics and audiences. A second season was already in the works by the time the first episodes hit Disney Plus, but nearly a year and a half later, no word on its release has been revealed. There have been some tidbits about what to expect, however, including the fairly major news that a brand new character will be introduced to the MCU in Season 2.

The news, via Boardwalk Times, confirms the identity of the new character as Kahhori, who was recently leaked via a Funko product. According to the Twitter account, Kahhori, a young Mohawk woman, will be the star of an episode that explores the impact of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy coming into possession of the Tesseract in pre-Colonial America.

Additional details from Marvel.com describe the episode as a look what happens when “The Tesseract takes on a new life and a new mythology, transforming a lake into a gateway to the stars and leading Kahhori, a young Mohawk woman, on a quest to discover her power.” Writer Ryan Little scripted the episode in collaboration with members of the Mohawk nation and the episode will “take place in the Mohawk language” and from the perspective of the Mohawk people. The episode will see Kahhori have to “live up to her name (which means she stirs the forest in Mohawk) to recruit powerful allies into the fight to save her people and change the course of history forever.

Though no official word has come from Marvel Studios at this time, insider KC Walsh recently shared a potential timeline for the release of the second season of What If…?. According to his sources, the show is tentatively set to debut in early 2024. As Marvel Studios looks to find a better pace with their streaming releases, no time frame (even those originally shared by Marvel) should be considered etched in stone at this time.

  • RUMOR: James Spader Set to Return to the MCU as Ultron

RUMOR: James Spader Set to Return to the MCU as Ultron

Over decades of Marvel Comics, Ultron has never stopped finding a way to return as a thorn in the side of the Avengers. It appears his cinematic counterpart is going to take up that habit as well. A new rumor shared by the mods at Reddit points to the return of the rogue A.I. in an upcoming Marvel Studios property.

According to the rumor shared in Tales from the Mod Queue, James Spader will return as the voice of Ultron for Armor Wars. Originally announced as a streaming series, Armor Wars is now getting the big-screen treatment and giving James Rhodes his time to take center stage. Though it’s currently not on the slate, rumors have suggested that the film could go into production as early as late 2023.

Fans have hoped for the return of Spader, whose Ultron is one of the MCU’s best and most memorable villains, for some time. While the plot of Armor Wars is unknown, it is said to spin out of Rhodes’ arc in Secret Invasion. In the comics, Armor Wars centered around the technology of Tony Stark falling into the hands of criminals who used it to enhance their own suits. Given that Stark created Ultron in the MCU, it would be terrifying to think that he kept some sort of backup that could allow for the reemergence of the AI should it fall into the wrong hands.

Yassir Lester has been tasked with scripting Armor Wars for Marvel Studios which producer Nate Moore said was being developed as a film to allow for some of Lester’s big ideas to be realized under a big budget.
