  • REPORT: ‘Blue Beetle’ Eyeing Early 2022 Production Start

REPORT: ‘Blue Beetle’ Eyeing Early 2022 Production Start

The DC Expanded Universe continues to expand as it plots more and more films like Batgirl, Zatanna, and even Blue Beetle. The latter will follow Jaime Reyes, the third, most recent, and most popular character to wield the mantle of Blue Beetle. Jaime is set to be played by the Cobra Kai‘s Xolo Maridueña, perfect casting for what’s surely shaping up to be many peoples most anticipated comic book films.

Not much is known about the project, as it’s yet to add any other talent to its cast. It seems like that could be changing very soon as it seems production on the film could begin in the first quarter of 2022. A new Production Weekly listing has the film set to begin filming in Georgia sometime early next year. Usually these types of dates from production weekly are taken with a grain of salt, but director Angel Manuel Soto has added some fuel to the fire by retweeting the news on his Twitter account.

There’s always a chance this production start date may change, but it seems Soto is anticipating an early 2022 start date if he also openly retweets it. The film will release as an HBO Max Original film but currently has no release date. The film is one of many upcoming DCEU films set to debut on the streaming platform in an interesting move to expand its shared DC universe from WB.

Jaime Reyes is the first Blue Beetle to actually don the scarab and wears the exoskeleton armor created by the Reach. It’ll be interesting to see how the film honors the past Beetles as it seems Ted Kord is poised to play a larger role in the film based on the concept art we saw at DC Fandome.

  • Tom Holland Uncertain About His MCU Future After ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’

Tom Holland Uncertain About His MCU Future After ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’

All eyes are on Spider-Man: No Way Home. The film will not only be the third entry in the MCU adaptation of the popular character but may also become a melting pot for all the Spider-Man franchises that came before. Alfred Molina’s Doc Ock has been the main focus for most of Sony’s promotion, and we even got a tease of Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin. Of course, this multiversal story opens up the question of what the future has in store for our webhead but not even Tom Holland is sure about that. In an interview with Total Film, he was asked what comes after the release of No Way Home, but he is just as uncertain as we are.

I don’t know. I don’t know. I genuinely don’t know. It’s something I’m thinking about a lot, and it’s something that’s on my mind all the time. But I genuinely don’t have an answer for you.

    Tom Holland

There are quite a few theories about what the future might have in store for Holland‘s version of the character. Venom: Let There Be Carnage seemed to set up an eventual confrontation, while it’s uncertain if he’ll even remain as part of the MCU moving forward. Sony seems hellbent on continuing the franchise. So, it seems unlikely they’d recast the character, especially if they want to continue banking on the MCU connection as well. Here’s hoping that we get a clearer picture once the film releases in December.

  • Jon M. Chu to Direct ‘Oh The Places You’ll Go!’ For Warner Bros. Animation

Jon M. Chu to Direct ‘Oh The Places You’ll Go!’ For Warner Bros. Animation

Crazy Rich Asians director Jon M. Chu will direct an adaption of the Dr. Seuss classic, Oh The Places You’ll Go! The news comes courtesy of Deadline, who reports the project is for Warner Bros. Animation. Unfortunately, those eager to see the animated flick will have to wait quite a few years. As it stands, Chu’s Oh The Places You’ll Go! will not hit theaters until 2027.

The project has been in development since 2018 when Warner Bros. started working with the Dr. Seuss Estate. J.J. Abrams‘ Bad Robot Productions joins the animated project with Abrams serving as an executive producer along with Hannah Minghella, Bad Robot’s Head of Motion Pictures. While Chu got the job, he was not necessarily the easiest choice for Bad Robot and Warner Bros. as he’s never directed an animated feature.

However, it’s said that Chu has expressed his interest in tackling an animated film to Warner Bros. previously. The director was part of creative pods the studio created for branded material like Dr. Seuss and Hanna Barbara in the past. The studio ultimately decided to circle back to Chu because of his ability to direct with heart and humanity.

Oh, The Places You’ll Go! debuts in 2027.

FKA twigs and Central Cee Collaborate on Single for ‘The King’s Man’

It’s been a long wait since The King’s Man was initially announced. The pandemic didn’t help and pushed the 20th Century film back by quite a bit. Luckily, we’re nearing its release ahead of Christmas on December 22nd. To build-up to its release, Disney has announced that U.K. artists FKA twigs and Central Cee have collaborated on a new single titled “Measure of a Man.” It’ll premiere on Clara Amfo’s Hottest Record on Radio 1 at 6 p.m. GMT on November 18th. So, we don’t have to wait too long, the artists have shared our first listen to the track on TikTok.

You can listen to the first snippet on TikTok by clicking here. They’ve also shared their excitement about the collab on Twitter.

The King’s Man explores the origins of the fictional spy agency, which is about to stop a collection of tyrants and masterminds to ensure millions are killed. Matthew Vaughn directed the film with an all-star staff consisting of Ralph Fiennes, Gemma Arterton, Rhys Ifans, Matthew Goode, Tom Hollander, Harris Dickinson, Daniel Brühl, Djimon Hounsou, and Charles Dance. • Mahershala Ali Talks Voicing Blade in ‘Eternals’ and His MCU Future

Mahershala Ali Talks Voicing Blade in ‘Eternals’ and His MCU Future

Mahershala Ali‘s Blade made his debut much earlier than we initially expected. At the tail end of the Eternals, a voice can be heard talking to Dane Whitman as he tried to touch the Ebony Blade. Director Chloé Zhao confirmed that it was actually the Vampire Hunter actor, who provided the voice-over. After a bit of silence, Ali has opened up on tackling the role for the first time without being physically present.

It was scary. Because, you know, you’re talking before you’re filming it. I’m pretty particular about my choices, like most actors, and so having to make some choices – even with a line, vocally – this early on, it brought up some very real anxieties. And it made the job real. It’s like, ‘Okay, this is happening now’, you know, and that’s exciting.

    Mahershala Ali

He was also asked about what it felt like to finally bring the character to life after the announcement all the way back in 2019’s San Diego Comic-Com. Even better, Ali teases that they might finally start work on the project very soon.

That Marvel world is obviously the biggest in film, and just to get my little introduction to that – starting with the Comic Con a couple years ago, and now the very early stages of stepping into the shoes of that character – it felt special and really cool. I’m excited to get going and do more. We’re getting there. We’re getting close.

    Mahershala Ali

The last update we got on the project was when they added Mogul Mowgli‘s Bassam Tariq as the film’s director, but there’s been little on the project since. Still, his appearance in Eternals might offer a hint on where this take on the character is heading, especially with the film’s writers teasing a curious connection between vampires and the Ebony Blade. So, we might see him again ahead of his solo film outing.

  • Zoya Akhtar Will Direct ‘The Archies’ Indian Adaption for Netflix

Zoya Akhtar Will Direct ‘The Archies’ Indian Adaption for Netflix

The Archies are coming to life thanks to director Zoya Akhtar.

Per Variety, Akhtar will direct a live-action musical take on The Archies that takes place in 1960s India. The project will be produced by Akhtar and Reema Kagti for Tiger Baby and Sharad Devarajan for Graphic India. Plans for ‘Archie in Bollywood’ adaptions were first announced in 2018. This will mark the first of those projects to come to fruition.

For Akhtar, the chance to adapt The Archies is exciting. “I am super excited to have the chance to bring ‘The Archies’ to life. It was a large part of my childhood and teenage years,” she explained. “The characters are iconic and globally loved, which is also why I am a little nervous. I have to make sure the film stokes the nostalgia of a generation that grew up on the comic and yet resonates with the young adults today.”

The Archies will mark the first international comic to be translated for Indian screens. As it stands, the project is still in the early stages and a release date has not yet been unveiled. The live-action film will reimagine classic characters like Archie, Betty, Veronica, Reggie, Moose and Jughead with an Indian cast, while still featuring elements of the comics.

“We are supremely excited to partner with the great team at Graphic India to bring Archie and his friends to Bollywood,” Jon Goldwater, Archie Comics CEO, said in a statement to Variety. “Archie’s lasting and growing presence in India made this move the logical next step as our stellar library of characters continues to expand into other media. It’s a major moment for Archie and its fans around the world.”

  • Sam Wilson Will be Outmatched in ‘Captain America 4’

Sam Wilson Will be Outmatched in ‘Captain America 4’

Ever since Falcon and the Winter Soldier was released on Disney+, Sam Wilson has become the new Captain America of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Anthony Mackie brought new energy to the role and will embody a very different kind of symbol. He’s not a super-soldier like Steve Rogers and given what we’ve explored in the Disney+ series, he’ll face quite the uphill battle before he can truly embrace the new symbol. Marvel Studios’ Nate Moore highlighted that very fact in an interview with Phase Zero.

I think is fascinating because he’s a, he’s a guy, he’s the guy with wings and a shield, but he is a guy. So we’re going to put him through the wringer and make them earn it and see what happens when he is outweighed, outclassed out, you know, out everything. What makes somebody Captain America? Cause I’m going to argue with not being a super-soldier. And I think we’re going to prove that with Mackie and Sam Wilson.

    Nate Moore

We already got to explore Wilson learning to accept the vibranium shield and mantle. Yet, there are a lot more challenges heading his way as he enters the big stage. Of course, it’s uncertain who exactly he’s going to face and how it may tie into his overarching story moving forward. There are many potential angles, such as the exploring the Serpent Society that was jokingly revealed before it got replaced by Civil War. For now, it’s great we got a little tease for what’s to come, and here’s hoping Disney+ Day offers a bit more insight into what we can suspect from future Marvel projects.

  • ‘Eternals’ Producer Hints at Blade and Ebony Blade Connection

‘Eternals’ Producer Hints at Blade and Ebony Blade Connection

Eternals writers Kaz and Ryan Firbo recently hinted that the post-credit sequence was going to be quite different at one point with Anthony Mackie potentially making an appearance. Yet, there’s still the question of why exactly Maharshala Ali‘s Blade appeared in front of Kit Harington‘s Dane Whitman. His brief voice cameo implied that he is aware of what the Ebony Blade, which Dane was about to touch, had in store for the future wielder. Well, it looks like they might have a connection. In an interview with Phase Zero, Eternals and Marvel Studios producer Nate Moore hinted at why he ended up nabbing the cameo in the post-credit sequence, and it makes quite a bit of sense.

Cause the Ebony Blade, the characteristics of the Ebony Blade are not dissimilar to some degree to vampirism and we think that’s an interesting kind of thing to play with. So we kind of knew that was on the table

So, in a way, it would imply that the Ebony Blade might have a deep-rooted connection to how the vampires came into existence within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In a way, the origin of the blood-sucking creatures might get tied to the long history of Dane Whitman’s family lineage, as well as the Middle Ages. Perhaps, his role as the Black Knight is further explored within the more mystical side of this universe, as we unravel how they connect. It’s an exciting prospect. Moore has teased “he was for reasons hopefully that would become apparent as you see more things,” which hopefully get unraveled sooner rather than later.

  • ‘Eternals’ Producer Talks Marvel Studios Approach to a Future ‘X-Men’ Film

‘Eternals’ Producer Talks Marvel Studios Approach to a Future ‘X-Men’ Film

Eternals and Marvel Studios producer Nate Moore joined the Phase Zero podcast during a live stream to discuss the recently released film and MCU’s future. In it, he was asked quite a few questions about the future of Marvel Studios, especially with the properties like X-Men or Fantastic Four. especially the former was brought up due to Eternals diverse cast and if there were any thematic connections between these two properties. Moore had a rather interesting answer to the question and highlighted how the Eternals differ.

To me, our goal with the film wasn’t to make it a film about diversity in a way that I think X-Men has to be. X-Men is a super direct allegory in which these people are, are ostracized and, and persecuted for who they are. And that’s very much the story of X-Men that’s that’s in the DNA. What I find interesting about Eternals is the movie has zero commentary about that. The characters don’t talk about it.

    Nate Moore

It’s an interesting discussion about the X-Men’s place in storytelling. Moore goes on to highlight that Eternals is “about faith and purpose” rather than its diversity. Yet, he also goes on to highlight that once they approach an adaptation of X-Men, they’ll have to discuss the topic regarding diversity.

This film is very much a conversation I would argue about faith and purpose and the value of humanity, but not in the context necessarily of the diversity conversation that we’re having in our everyday lives. I think if, and when we get to an X-Men movie, we’re going to have to have that conversation because that’s very much in the DNA of, of that thematically.

    Nate Moore

So far, we still have no announcement of when we can expect the X-Men or any adaptation of these characters. the last time we heard anything about a potential reboot was back in March when Illuminerdi shared that they are slowly starting work on a project titled The Mutants rather than the iconic name we’ve come to love. Still, it may be a project name that pays tribute to what Stan Lee originally wanted to call the initial comics.
