    Marvel Studios Has Reportedly Settled on The Roster for Its ‘X-Men’ Reboot

    Before Marvel Studios’ live-action X-Men reboot hits the screen, the uncanny team of mutant heroes will already have some significant positive momentum. After Fox’s two-decade run of films went out with a whimper, X-Men ’97 led off the all-new, all-different Disney era with a bang, reminding audiences just how exceptional the characters can be with solid storytelling as the foundation. The successful streaming series was shortly followed up by Deadpool & Wolverine which not only brought the two leads into the Marvel Studios Multiverse but also resuscitated interest in seeing Channing Tatum as Gambit after the character’s solo film fell victim to the Disney-Fox merger.

    While those projects stood in the spotlight, Marvel Studios continued work on the X-Men project first teased by Kevin Feige at SDCC ’19. With writer Michael Lesslie putting together a script, the studio is closer than ever to putting their own Children of the Atom on screen. Now, a new rumor sheds some light on who will and won’t be on that team.

    According to trusted insider Daniel RPK, the first iteration of the MCU’s X-Men will closely resemble the team seen in X-Men ’97…with one notable exception.

    While the report doesn’t expand upon which characters from the animated series fans can expect, it seems likely that the following characters would be all but sure bets, should the plan come to fruition.

    The POVs

    Just over a month ago, RPK shared the news that the MCU X-Men reboot would have two characters who have often been reported to be among Feige’s favorites leading the way. A month later, there’s no reason to believe that anything has changed which means Kitty Pryde and Jubilee should be front and center whenever the film hits the big screen.

    Original X-Men

    When the X-Men first appeared in the pages of Marvel Comics in 1963, Charles Xavier’s team consisted of Scott Sommers, Jean Grey, Hank McCoy, Bobby Drake and Warren Worthington III. Obviously, three of those heroes (Scott, Jean and Hank) were featured in X-Men ’97 and should be expected to lead the MCU’s team of mutant heroes.

    The Cameo Machine

    Kevin Sydney, aka Changeling, aka Morph, doesn’t have the illustrious comic book history that the other X-Men here have; however, as portrayed in X-Men ’97 he offers something no other character can: the potential for limitless cameos which equals the potential for limitless merchandise!

    The Giant-Size Additions

    In 1975, Len Wein and Dave Cockrum gave the X-Men new life with an all-new, all-different crew that featured Storm, Nightcrawler and Wolverine among others. While Storm and Wolverine are X-Men animated series mainstays, RPK’s report indicates that Wolverine isn’t expected to be part of the new team. That leaves Storm and Nightcrawler to do the heavy lifting which both characters are more than capable of doing.

    Dat 90’s Couple, Sugah!

    For old-school X-fans, Scott and Jean are the power couple; however, X-Men: The Animated Series offered up a new possibility that has dominated the pages of the comics ever since. Given Channing Tatum‘s performance in Deadpool & Wolverine, it’s almost impossible to imagine that he won’t be back as Gambit. And while fans could debate all day about which character was done dirtiest in Fox’s X-Men movies, if Rogue isn’t near the top of that list, nobody’s listening anyway. These two deserve their time to shine in live-action and Feige may well give it to them.

    It’s not a surprise that Giancarlo Esposito became one of the “top actors” that fans want to see joining the big Marvel family because of his excellent performance in shows such as Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, and The Mandalorian, to the point that the actor himself it’s interested in receiving that Disney money but not in the way that MCU fans think. 

    Even though everyone is on board to see Esposito on the big screen as Dr. Doom, he recently expressed interest in taking on a very different role; the 64-year-old actor is keen on playing Charles Xavier, leader of the X Men.

    “I love what Marvel does. I love that the fans can see me in this universe and are proposing not only one character, possibly Magneto, possibly [DC’s Dr.] Freeze. And the biggest ask is Charles Xavier”

    Some people may find this statement confusing since we recently saw Charles interpreted by Patrick Stewart in the latest installment of the Doctor Strange franchise, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. And yes, that’s a valid point. Still, we must remember that we saw him coming back as the Professor because Feige wanted to give the fans what they had been praying to see for years; this doesn’t mean that he might be Professor X from the MCU universe. He might be a variant. Hence, the door for someone different to play this character is still wide open (as we know).

    Kevin Feige Teases More Mutants in the MCU’s Near Future

    The Mutants are coming to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While some theories expected a longer wait with the iconic Marvel characters to appear after the Multiverse Saga has come to an end, but Marvel Studios is going at it one step at a time. We first met a familiar face in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness with the 90s theme, which was later used to recontextualize a reveal in Ms. Marvel.

    Now, we have the word once again spoken by Namor in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever; the first to be well-aware of his mutant status in the MCU given how different he is from his own people of Talocan. During the Q&A after the CCXP event showcasing Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige was asked on if we can expect more mutants in the near future and he definitely seemed optimistic

    No, look, we’ve already met a few. There’s a new Mutant named Namor that you might’ve met recently. So, more to come.

    Of course, the head of the production company is not going to give away what we can expect. We do know that Deadpool 3 will give Hugh Jackman one more chance to play Wolverine; hopefully finally wearing his iconic outfit. And, there are many opportunities to slowly introduce various versions of these characters throughout upcoming projects. Now, we just have to wait and see if the X-Men will get their time int he spotlight or if they even existed throughout MCU’s history to begin with.

    For starters, this was the biggest surprise to have happened in the Disney+ era of Marvel Studios. Both in terms of what this means for the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and in the viewing experience. Kamala Khan being revealed as the audience’s first mutant in the MCU opens the door for endless possibilities of speculation and theorizing on how some of the most-anticipated characters will enter future projects. For the character herself, Kamala Khan makes all the sense in the world to be a mutant (as she very likely would’ve been in the comics if the X-Men film rights weren’t elsewhere in 2013). And having the first mutant story be distinctly about a government that fears and discriminates against super-powered individuals highlights that Kevin Feige and co. are good hands to shepherd the X-Men back to the big screen. With both Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and now Ms. Marvel this year giving early glimpses into the concept of mutants (and with X-Men ‘97 slated for 2023), the radar for Marvel Studios potentially announcing a mutant-related project at San Diego Comic Con or D23 has certainly increased.

    Ms. Marvel’s finale followed through on its series mission by giving us Kamala Khan and her world. That world was on display as good as any Disney+ series has had to this point. With that being said, the reveal of Kamala being a mutant laced with the X-Men: The Animated Series theme was an all time moment for the new MCU.

    This reveal is symbolism that Iman Vellani is a major player and rightfully so. Kamala has the keys to the MCU and you can slot her anywhere and she has an impact. In terms of representation in actuality and in this universe these are the new stories that the fandom claims to want. Now we have them and more. While we have more questions to answer with Carol Danvers, this was Ms. Marvel’s moment. Standing ovation.

    Ms. Marvel is no worse than the third best Disney+ show. It would take a lot to supplant the WandaVision/Loki duplex, and Ms. Marvel came close, but an underwhelming villain choice stops it from that top tier. HOWEVER… this isn’t about the show as it is about the fact that, baby, there be mutants in the MCU! That’s right: Ms. Marvel is the MCU’s first mutant (that we know of, but more on that in a sec), and what a glorious reveal it was. You have to hand it to Kevin Feige: he said that everything will be revealed and Marvel didn’t really deviate from the Phase 4 plan even when people criticized it for its “aimless” trajectory. I think this change really grounds her firmly in the MCU’s history (hello Eternals and X-Men ’97 theme music), present (this post-Endgame world that’s rapidly becoming populated by enhanced individuals), and future (Kang is coming). Making her a mutant also makes her powers easy to explain because a mutation is much easier to explain than a Terrigen Bomb going off somewhere on Earth-616 and us never hearing about it. It, also, sets the stage for there being other mutants out there who are populating the world now, and clearly Damage Control won’t be the only ones after them. All in all, a great choice.

    Did not see coming that Ms. Marvel would end up being the one to set up the mutants in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Marvel Studios perfectly baited us with WandaVision and a cameo in Multiverse of Madness to make many think we’d not get any hints until after Fantastic Four. Yet, here they are using a familiar theme to slowly build up their arrival and also use it as a way to connect Kamala Khan to a bigger universe; without the sacrifice of her personal journey. Can’t wait to see where it goes.

    Someone had to be the first mutant and I couldn’t be happier that it is Kamala. As Torbjorn pointed out, it’s incredibly likely that had Marvel already owned the live-action rights to the X-Men, she’d have been one in the comics. Kamala fits what Stan Lee and Jack Kirby imagined the original mutants to be when they developed them in the early 1960s as a metaphor for the hate and social injustice America was facing at the time. I’ve said for years that Kamala Khan is one of the most important characters Marvel Comics has ever created and now, as the MCU’s first mutant, she’s one of the most important characters in the future of the franchise.

    The final episode of Ms. Marvel has dropped and it’s time to talk about it. If you, however, want to remain unspoiled then only continue at your own risk.

    Marvel Studios has finally made a move in regards to the slow introduction of the mutants into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Ms. Marvel has been revealed to be the MCU’s first mutant with a nice nod and the iconic 90s theme from the animated series. As it turns out, however, this wasn’t always the plan from the get-go as head writer Bisha K. Ali revealed that it was something that was definitely a moving piece as they put the series together.

    It wasn’t from the beginning [of the show]. With Marvel, something’s always a moving piece, and we’re trying to solve this question of, ‘If any of [Kamala’s family] put the bangle on, would they have powers?’ The answer was always no, from a character perspective, no.

    It’s interesting as the way it was hinted at was that they had this in the back of their minds while writing the project. They hinted that their plans were always to change their approach to the character to fit Kamala Khan in the bigger mythos being built around the MCU. We all just assumed that they may be actually setting something up in regards to her future appearance in The Marvels, but it definitely was a surprise that they went that direction. Some still believe that this is an erasure of the Inhumans, but with the recent appearance of Black Bolt, there are many opportunities to still tie her with the Royal Family in interesting ways.

    Iman Vellani Shares Her Excitement About THAT ‘Ms. Marvel’ Scene

    Spoiler ahead if you haven’t seen the final episode of Ms. Marvel yet. So, if you want to remain spoiler free, only continue at your own risk.

    The ending of Ms. Marvel did a lot. It felt like the perfect double-whammy as not only did we get the return of Brie Larson to the Marvel Cinematic Universe since her cameo in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, but also the reveal of the first mutant in the MCU. Now, it wasn’t explicitly stated that she is a mutant but anyone that loves the X-Men: The Animated Series‘ theme would instantly make the combination with the word “Mutation.” In a way, it’s our first official acknowledgment of the team in the mainline MCU, and Iman Vellani shares how she freaked out when she found out.

    They sent me, and only me, the draft [of the final episode], and I immediately freaked out. I emailed Kevin Feige in all caps. I was like, are you doing this like for real? Are you sure? I’m so honored! I was like yelling at him through an email. I was freaking out. This is the biggest deal in the world, and the fact that it’s happening in our show is crazy. People are going to lose their minds. They’re going to lose everything. I did. It’s truly a really big deal.

    We’re naturally left with more questions than answers. The X-Men‘s only confirmed future appearance is through the animated sequel series to the iconic 90s animated series. With the iconic theme song making a repeated return, perhaps they are part of this franchise after all and we’ll meet a very different team that’s always been there. Of course, we also saw that version of Professor X in Multiverse of Madness is part of another dimension. So, they kind of paid tribute to it while also keeping the door open. Perhaps SDCC has some answers for us soon.

    ‘Ms. Marvel’: Major Finale Reveal Explained

    Before audiences saw an episode of Marvel Studios’ Disney Plus streaming series Ms. Marvel, much had been made of the changes to the character from the comics that inspired the show. Sana Amanat, who co-created the character in the comics, moved to a position at Marvel Studios in order to shepherd Kalama Khan into the MCU. Amanat was among a group of creatives who worked to change Kamala’s powers, and indicated that the changes were made to allow them to link “to larger stories in the Marvel universe.” However, it’s safe to say that nearly nobody expected that link to be that Kamala Khan was a mutant.

    In an instant, Kamala Khan’s origin story went from a heartwarming story about family to a groundbreaking moment in the MCU. Kamala Khan is now the first mutant to appear on the MCU’s Earth-616 and she found out about it along with the audience. After Kamala’s brother learned that she was the superhero formerly known as Night Light, Amir requested that Bruno do some tests on him to see if he might have a trick or two up his sleeve. Following those tests, Bruno reconsiders his original hypothesis about why Kamala can use the bangle and when he takes a closer look, what he finds changes everything for Kamala and the MCU.

    As Bruno explains to Kamala, “there’s something different” in Kamala’s genes compared to the rest of the Khan family, “like a mutation.” With those words (and with the unmistakable theme from X-Men: The Animated Series chiming in their aftermath), everything changes for Kamala and for the MCU. And while fans may attempt to debate what the lines and the jingle may or may not mean, Marvel.com made it very clear: Kamala Khan is a mutant.

    Making Kamala a mutant rather than an Inhuman goes beyond any changes fans could have predicted for the character, but it also raises quite a few questions. For the moment, it seems that a lot of those questions won’t get answers for a while, but one thing made clear by Marvel is that her mutant genetics (and not being native to this dimension) were what allowed her to harness the power of the bangle when nobody else could.

    For now, Kamala stands as the lone known mutant on Earth, but that could (and will) change pretty fast. And while she’s the first to be revealed, she probably isn’t the first to exist. With a bomb like this being dropped in the finale, it’s safe to say fans can expect other mutants to emerge from the depths of the Marvel Cinematic Universe over the next year or two. The mutant-era of the MCU has begun and it has been ushered in by Kamala Khan.

    Over the past week, Marvel has released their monthly solicitations for their August 2022 comics. Here’s a brief look at what books have me most excited and are sure to end up on my pull list, if they’re not already there:

    A.X.E.: DEATH TO THE MUTANTS #2 (OF 3) KIERON GILLEN (W) • GUIU VILANOVA (A) • Cover by Esad Ribić

    Kieron Gillen has been absolutely knocking it out of the park at Marvel, with his runs on Uncanny X-Men, Young Avengers, and more recently, Eternals. I’m a bit late to the Kieron Gillen hype-train, but ever since reading his inventive run on the Eternals, Gillen has become a favorite. If Gillen writes it, it’s a must read. Aside from Gillen’s involvement, and Guiu Vilanova’s stunning artwork, what intrigues me the most about A.X.E.: Death to the Mutants #2 is the pairing up of Cyclops and Kro: a team-up you never knew you needed until now.

    I couldn’t choose just one Gillen written solicit, now could I! Beginning back in March, Gillen’s Immortal X-Men run has since become my favorite mutant-related book currently running, and my main source of hype for Marvel’s upcoming “Judgement Day” event. Gillen has crafted a plethora of characters that are both complicated AND relatable; what more could you want from a mutant series! Marvel, here’s a little word of advice: just give Kieron control over everything pertaining to mutants.

    A group of individuals that have to deal with the aftermath of superhero-related disasters will always be an idea with unlimited potential in the Marvel Universe. This new Damage Control series seems like an interesting way to explore dynamics between different characters that wouldn’t necessarily interact under normal circumstances. The possibilities are endless. Knowing that Marvel loves its corporate synergy, and with the return of Damage Control in the MCU with Spider-Man: No Way Home, and seemingly Ms. Marvel, could a Damage Control show á la “The Office” possibly be in our future? Well, with an obvious choice like Adam F. Goldberg to helm the project, it seems like a no-brainer – but only time will tell.

    Dan Slott’s greatest contribution to Marvel Comics is the Spider-Verse, of which Spider-Gwen was the breakout character. Spider-Verse and Dan Slott fans everywhere can now rejoice, because Slott is returning to the Spider-Verse with a new Edge Of The Spider-Verse series (which is where Gwen Stacy original appeared as Spider-Woman). Edge of the Spider-Verse #1 or #2 – which tease the return of Spider-Gwen, Peni Parker, Araña, and Spider-Man Noir, as well as a new female Spider-Man UK (Spider-Woman UK, if you will) – could easily be on this list in place of Edge of the Spider-Verse #3. However, #3 stands out as it teases a potential breakout star: Night Spider, a.k.a. Felicia freakin’ Hardy.

    REPORT: Marvel Studios’ ‘X-Men’ Reboot in Early Development

    Ever since Disney purchased 20th Century Fox, we’ve been waiting for the X-Men to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe. During Disney’s Investors Day, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige revealed that they are adapting Fantastic Four, but the mutants will have to wait a bit. There have been theories that they could appear in WandaVision, as Wanda Maximoff has close ties with Magneto. It seemed unlikely to happen with each passing episode, but it looks like Marvel Studios is finally moving forward with their adaptation of the iconic mutant family.

    Illuminerdi has just shared that the X-Men film reboot has entered the early stage of development. As of right now, there is no talent of any kind attached to the project. It’ll enter development under the working title “The Mutants,” which is beautifully straight-forward. We have no details of how they will approach the project, but it would indicate that we could maybe get some news by the end of the year.

     

     

    It will be interesting to see which direction they go. 20th Century Fox introduced the first film in the franchise back in 2000. So, the franchise has been going for around 20 years. Last year’s The New Mutants marked the end of an era. The original franchise focused a lot on Wolverine. It made sense as he is one of the group’s most popular characters. They might take a different route and focus on the school, as they could take the same path as the Harry Potter franchise did by focusing on the students. No matter what direction they take, we can’t wait to see it unfold on the silver screen.
